This game is just too much fun. My only fear is that we will all be spoiled and any future sand-box open-world games we play will never live up to the quality we experience here.

That's something I hadn't considered... Planning to pick up & start Zelda very soon, but it might make my backlogged openworld games (Batman Arkham City and Assassin's Creed 4) seem less impressive from the sound of it.

Oh well, just a risk I'm gonna have to take! Sorry Batman!

So the back of the Wii U box for this game lists the Wiimote + Nunchuk as a control option... I have been unsuccessful in figuring out how to use that.  Is that just a "typo"?

Yeah I think that might be an error? Fairly certain it only supports Gamepad and the Wii U Pro Controller!

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Official Sales Thread

Hey Enner am I reading these right, did Japan sell through +300k Switches with 'only' just over half of those customers also getting Zelda? Or are these sales to retailers?

I guess some people got theirs with 1-2 Switch, Dragon Quest Heroes, Bomberman or even Puyo Puyo Tetris instead? Would expect many people to get several games though, so did some just get Switches without games on them? Seems odd to me.

Wonder how these sales look in the West too, I've been seeing commercials for that Horizon Zero Dawn game e v e r y w h e r e so if they're this close in Japan, could that game top Zelda in its first week?

Gulp, well going for the most generic one seems to have worked indeed... So I'm going with Nintendo's safest bet of them all - Mario Kart 8!

So, there's three modes: one board game (as mentioned), a randomizer (just plays a game a random), and then you can just pick one.

Thanks for writing your impressions. I think I might pick this up on the cheap somewhere down the line once I get a Switch. Bomberman R would be a priority first, but after that I think I'd try to pick up 1-2 Switch. Kind of a shame it wasn't a pack-in; Nintendo Land discs went for dirt cheap pretty soon after those consoles' releases.

Question: does the board game mode look/play something like Mario Party/Wii Party U? Or maybe more along the lines of Smash Board in the latest Smash Bros game? I like the idea of having the outcome of several minigames add up into the broader encompassing boardgame.

Still bummed that my candidate of choice, the Shrieking White-Hot Sphere of Pure Rage never made it out of the primaries.  :(

Makes a lot of sense to me that the Orange called y'all a pervert for looking behind the shower curtain. That's not playful beckoning, it's a perfectly valid insult to throw at a Peeping Tom(ato).

Been playing some older games lately and having a blast.

Dreamcast:

Power Stone - still great and a real shame we haven't seen more of this series

Great game yeah! Did you ever get a chance to try the sequel? I never did but it supposedly supports 4-player too.

Ghost Blade HD looks pretty sick! Apparantly it's a remake of a 2015 Dreamcast shmup. Dreamcast audience is crazy dedicated to keeping it alive haha, wouldn't be surprised if it still got dev support after Wii U ends.

What better game to test my beginner's luck than something easy-to-approach and casual? For years I've been saying Nintendo games have become too difficult. Luckily Monolith knows how to handle concise tutorials and entirely avoid confusing players with lengthy manuals - Xenoblade Chronicles X it'll be!

Reader Reviews / Re: Runbow: Deluxe Edition (Wii U)

Cool that they included a download code for the music, didn't know that. Runbow is one of the few highly praised Wii U indie titles I've yet to try. Don't get the chance often for multiplayer unfortunately.

Any idea if they're gonna port this to Switch? It'd be great since you already have 2 controllers right there.

I've pre ordered a Switch, Zelda, and a Pro Controller. I'll pick up Fast RMX on the eShop (unless its getting a physical version? I don't think so) and we'll see if anything else tickles my fancy.

No physical version announced as of right now, think it's the same with Shovel Knight too? It's worth noting that Fast Racing Neo (plus the DLC) got a physical release in Australia and Europe, just like the SteamWorld Collection did, but I've not heard of plans to do those eShop Selects discs in North America... So based on historic precedent I would say it's probably not happening, unless Switch blows the doors off in the launch period and they're scrambling to fill shelves.

Spy Chameleon: just noted this went on sale this week and remembered I played it sometime last year I think.

So in Spy Chameleon you play as a chameleon who, crucially, is somehow not a spy. I'd say he's more of a skilled burglar to be honest. Seen from a top-down view you run and sneak around short levels, avoiding guards, sentries, cameras and other methods of detection. Ultimate goal is to reach the end of each chapter, where Spy Chameleon will steal an object of particular value - such as an important painting, or the secret recipe to a conspicuously branded soda beverage.

Being a chameleon our lil' burglar dude can change his skintone (this alternate future is truly post-racial) at the touch of a button, to blend in with whatever he's standing on. Standing on red carpet? Undetectable! Blue neon pads? Invisible! Etc.
It's really quite a clever mechanic, and since the controls are ace (holla at yo Pro Controlla) the whole game is pretty much a joy to play. Longer levels often have checkpoints and reloads when you got caught are near instantenous too.

Complaints: the leaderboards are useless if you don't have any friends who play this. What do I care about seeing the top 5 worldwide for every level (usually the same few people vying for the top spot too), just tell where I am on the list!
Would also have liked a smidge more effort being put into the story. Maybe a 5-second cutscene showing who orders Spy Chameleon to steal these riches or something. Or a picture at the end with him sipping not-coca-cola in front of the chaMona Lisa, just something to provide context or motivation.

Overall though this is a fun, vibrant lil' stealth/puzzle game you can run through in two sittings. At 5 bucks or less I'd say it's worth a shot! Rating 7/10

Gutsy choice. Except for the fact that Smash Bros. is really popular. Steefosauris is a Safe-o-saurus. Wow. My wit is off the chartz this game.

Hahahaha perfect ;D

Gonna tempt fate here and try to be safe with the option that includes a target blast mode, Super Smash Bros. For Wii U!

Just to be clear I still haven't finished the third Ace Attorney game nor have I started Apollo Justice which is the fourth mainline game in the series.

Lol, out of curiosity what series do you have the most unplayed entries of? I think for me it might be Donkey Kong: got the Wii game, DK Jungle Beat, and Tropical Freeze - all of which I've tried just once and finished only a few levels of so far. Well and the Civ bundle I got yesterday, that's also 3 games with a bunch of expansions.

Oh and I've got several Platinum Games titles in the backlog, but I guess those aren't really a series (Madworld, Viewtiful Joe 2, Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101). Consumerism is so ridiculous haha.

1243
Back in round one my guess was Star Fox Zero. Someone must have thought I'd choose it again!

Makes sense to me, everyone knows the decision making of humans always reliably mimics autocorrelation and never fluctuates.

As mentioned earlier, with no VC Day 1 on 3DS and Wii U, this now seems to be Nintendo's modus operandi. My only theory as to why this is the case is that Nintendo wants to have fewer things to look after at launch. With a lot of people suddenly buying a system at one time and booting up on their network, there could be glitches or bugs with the interface that need to be patched along with issues with all the games being released at the same time. So, keeping the VC off the console for a little while is one less potential problem to cause any issues or headaches.

Could be yeah, but maybe it's just a "lucky side-effect" of not having the full system done like they wanted to entirely? Assuming the average console cycle lasts 5~ years for Nintendo, they're only right on the cusp here. Wii U's poor performance probably had them rush development in some ways.

To be honest I'm not sure how big of a deal this is; the day-1 crowd will likely mostly be Nintendo converts who are buying their new Zelda machine. And the eShop will be up and running right? But yeah you'd expect VC at launch nowadays, and it's not really the kind of thing you can announce at E3 without receiving scorn.

General Gaming / Re: Which Civ game is the best entrypoint?
« on: February 23, 2017, 12:28:39 PM »
Oh wow I hadn't even seen that bundle, they have a similar thing on steam with like a thousand DLC packs and whatnot on offer right now which is what I was eyeing. Thanks for the link!!!

Think I'll just go for the bundle for all three yeah, if Civ5 doesn't run on my PC it's not such a loss at these prices lol. Is Civ5 the one you guys use for multiplayer?

(Unrelated thought but Christ how do game developers even make money nowadays, feels like digital distribution is a real race-to-the-bottom. Not just on steam and these bundles, but I've gotten so many cheap download titles on Wii U as well.)

EDIT: kicked a few extra bucks to charity & the developer to stave off guilt.

General Gaming / Which Civ game is the best entrypoint?
« on: February 23, 2017, 08:30:38 AM »
So since there's no giant open air world games coming out soon at all whatsoever, I've decided there's no worse better possible time to get into a giant strategy game than now.

I quite enjoyed Tropico 4, and the first Age of Empires back in the day. Soooo when I saw that Civilization has a couple of entries on sale right now, I figured yeah why not?

However I'd like to ask if anyone here has any experience with Civ4 and/or Civ5? I like the hex grid better from a visual standpoint, but have also read people think Civ4 is the highlight of the series (and it's cheaper).

Thoughts on which of the two would be the best for a newbie to the series? I'm leaning towards 4 currently since there's a complete version and it's less likely to throttle my pc lol.

I doubt Skyrim would change much with a remaster anyhow. I was watching a seminar on modular games and the way the build levels..... is pretty cookie cutter.

Out of curiosity, what is cookie cutter about them? I've only played Morrowind years ago of the series and mostly just ran around trying stupid cheat combinations (at one point I could jump over entire towns). So I've got no real conception of the level design in Elder Scrolls games, so just wondering what makes them kinda average?

Skyrim was praised a lot right, I might give it a shot on Switch eventually.

Hearing James read out those Kutar titles made them seem like accidental beat poetry.

Kutar my mother in an insane asylum!
Kutar the groaning saxophone!
Kutar the solitudes of skyscrapers and pavements!
Kutar the lone juggernaut!
Kutar the vast lamb of the middle class!
Kutar the crazy shepherds of rebellion!

Kutar the supernatural extra brilliant intelligent kindness of the soul.

It's not as frustrating as it seems. The game is pretty liberal when it comes to health and there is usually a decent amount laying around on flowers or grass. You can also kill a few enemies to get back up pretty easily.

Hmm okay that's reassuring. Still kinda sounds like some needless busiwork if you ask me, but not nearly as annoying I guess. Being crap at games has made me really appreciate Rayman Legends for example where you respawn almost instantly with very little setback. Kinda wish more games would head in that direction, but then again I'm not a designer so what do I know lol.

Interesting that the game is almost out after such a long time. I remember downloading the Nindies@Home demo.
I played another demo for it at PAX Aus last year, it seemed pretty good. I will probably buy it.

It says on the eShop you get a small discount (like 2 bucks) if you download it the first month with that Nindies @ Home thing on your account. Might be of interest to you.
