For those who have the Wii U version, how does it compare to the PS4 version? Can you create worlds as large as PS4 or is it closer to PS3 in scale? I already have it on PS4 and I have Minecraft Story Mode on PS3 but I would be tempted to get the Wii U one just for the Mario stuff if it's not too gimped of a port.

I'm no pro (not really even a casual) Minecraft player, but based on what I've read the Wii U version is much closer to what was released on PS3.  It does not have the expanded world sizes from more powerful platforms.

I guess it isn't a very big deal, a Super Mario themed level doesn't need to be super massive anyways. I was just curious. Dang it I was hoping to buy a new laptop soon but it looks like I might be putting more money into Nintendo's bank account once again.

Gamestop is a retailer, to them another Wii is more exciting than another Game Cube or Wii U. I am not sure if I would get my hopes up too high just yet.

I don't know why people get hung up on what developer is doing what game because they are just names of teams people come and go. t|The "team" that made Metroid Prime might not be the same people working at Retro on the new game, it could be people left over from the team that worked on Wii Music or Nintendoland for all we know. A company like Nintendo surely doesn't force people to stay locked in one department for the duration of their career.

EAD, Rare, Retro, Intelligent Systems, Namco, Bandai, Sega, etc, they are all just names the people come and go.

I want to be hopeful NX will be awesome and so far I am leaning more towards optimistic than I was before. Optimistic can turn south real quick with Nintendo it usually only takes one slip up to throw a monkey wrench into the whole shebang.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Splatoon!! WELCOME - TO DYE!
« on: May 02, 2016, 11:07:55 AM »
I am facing a conundrum. The local used game shop is offering me $26 in trade credit for my copy of Splatoon. He knows I have the game because I told him what games I had for Wii U and he keeps asking if I want to bring it in every time I go. I know the game is selling well for Wii U right now so I doubt it will be much of a "collectors item" in the future. The thing is the game is not my cup of tea I tried it a couple of times I like the characters, the world and the presentation but can't get into the game play at all. But I am wondering if I would regret trading it in now for a measly $26 bucks or if I should hold onto it for the potential increase when Wii U is a collectors item.

I finally did trade in Nintendoland for a whopping $2 in store credit, but I never even attempted to play that game. I have no regrets there since it came with the machine.

Man I hope so, this game is the game that has me finally getting a 3DS for certain this year.

I think this is good news. If I am reading it right it means NOA will have more say in overall company strategies and that is nothing but good news considering how out of touch Japan is with American culture. I wouldn't be too worried about RPG's, if NX has a shared library and gets stronger output it will have, at the very least, the 3DS level of RPG's I would suspect and that should be more than good enough on top of VC and FF7 remake.

307
it was a JOKE!

I was making fun of the people who wouldn't buy Wii u because of the name. Lighten up.

308
So realistically we should just be expecting Wii U 2.0 but not calling it Wii U. Oh god what if they call it Wii NeXt. I will boycott the thing it if has Wii in the name at all I don't care if it's PS5 level specs and has every damn game I want.

Could you do us a favor and start your Nintendo boycott like, now, and forswear any media or forums that have anything to do with Nintendo products?

That's a little harsh, why so hostile?

Okay, let's try this again. Nintendo 64 sold how many? It might have appealed to the loyalists, but what Nintendo console hasn't appealed to them? If you think Playstation wasn't fueled by teenagers then you were living on a deserted island in the 90's. Nintendo has never been strong with teenagers. Just because some people who grew up with DK and Smash appealed to those people who just happened to be teenagers at the time doesn't prove it appealed to the broader category as a whole. And like it or not Nintendo does appeal to kids, just because some grown ups, myself included, also get into their games doesn't mean they don't try to make games that have broader appeal but you gotta admit it's always been a token effort at best.

BTW, Perm you just proved my point, NONE of the games you mentioned were made by Nintendo, bravo buddy thanks for playing. Nintendo has never made games that appeal to teenagers, and as a whole their consoles have never appealed to teenagers. They appeal to kids, and adults that grew up with them, and a few who stick with them even through the awkward teen years. Perm, go back in time and I promise you had more friends that were into Playstation, even people in your HS that weren't your friend, that were into Sega and Playstation, than N64.

Nobody was talking about Handhelds, the rules that apply to them have never applied to consoles it's an entirely different market, no different everything.

So a ten year old Game Cube game was in the top ten. Either it was a very slow month overall, or Nintendo gamers continue to be insanely loyal. I put my money on number 2, being one of those insane Nintendo loyalists and all.

312
That is a good question. I am probably going to be getting a PS VR this winter, unless NX has a launch title I can't live without, or itself is VR, I won't have the extra money for anything else. My plan for NX, even if it has a compelling launch title, is to wait until the following year when it has had time to grow. I got PS4 one year after it came out and it was alright, but I waited two whole years before I got a Wii U. Normally I wait a year to a year and a half. VR I am buying early because I have been dying to play VR since I was a kid and this time it looks like it will finally be worth it, even if just for a handful of games.

Also on the Wii U being a collectors item, that is another incentive to get some of the rare games now, which is the only reason I even bought Wonderful 101. For a while I was rooting for Wii U to Sega Saturn flop just so the after market prices would make me some money down the road. But then the games turned out to be pretty good so now I am happy it rose to the level it did.

313
Nintendo has never been good at getting teenagers though. When we were kids, we all played Nintendo, but as teenagers most of us migrated to either Sega or Sony, SNES did alright comparatively but it struggled the first couple of years, and didn't really take off until around the time the entire industry was on the verge of collapse especially Sega, who did collapse just a few years latter.

Nintendo basically starts over every generation with the kids and desperately tries to hold onto, or win back, the gamers that moved on. They will do just fine targeting the 30+ crowd, which is the age group that spends the most money on games, who cares which groups sends the most time on games that's not relevant at all. Teenagers fuel the Xbox and Playstation but even Playstation is beginning to reap the benefits of nostalgia which I think, 20th anniversary of PS1 and all that, probably helped build the hype for PS4 as much as anything else.

Nintendo so Ian says Nintendo needs to make an open world game because that is what Sony and MS has, except Sony doesn't make open world games, Sony makes racing games, fighting games, and a few Nintendo knock offs, with some narrative stuff sprinkled in. They also don't make that many FPS games either, neither does Microsoft for that matter, those are all 3rd party games, presumably if Nintendo can attract the right audience, and a large enough segment of it, they can get those games to come back, Game Cube had open world games, it had FPS games, even Wii had a few, there is no reason NX can't also. Nintendo can't worry about 3rd parties entirely, they need to make the machine accessible, make the best games they can, price it right, target their core audience while making it accessible to as many people as possible and actually market the hell out of it. They do that by having more variety, which I outlined a path to that but someone else mocked me for it because maybe they just want Nintendo to make one game a year forever.

314
This whole back and forth about which game to make is the very problem with Nintendo. It shouldn't be do they make a Metroid or do they make a DKC, there needs to be both. They obviously can't have the same studio doing both so they need to divide their resources better. Having just a new Metroid, a new Mario, and the Wii U up-Ports or just having a new DK, a new Mario, and the Wii U up-ports are both going to have the same impact on sales and excitement for NX, in that people will shrug them off as whatever.

They obviously can't have all the big franchises out at once, nobody in their right mind should expect that, but they damn sure need to have everything on NX they can get. This bullshit of juggling the franchises around every generation is what pisses gamers off an alienates them the most. Wii might have been **** as a console in terms of horespower and the waggle hurt it more than helped it, but it had a damn solid line up of games, but only if you like retro gaming. Nintendo can't bank entirely on retro gaming anymore they desperately need to be relevant again.

What they need is to rush, yes rush, the quick and dirty up-ports as fast as they can while giving the major studios a new Mario, a new Metroid, and a new DKC, but then they need to shift to the stuff gamers have baan asking for, a new RPG that isn't paper Mario and then do a Paper Mario latter when the sales are there, a new more ambitous F-Zero that excites that crowd, but let that come after a new Mario Kart which will help bring in the rest of the racing crowd.

There is another problem with NX though, it can have a Game Pad or touch screen no problem but it had better not have motion controls period unless VR is a part of it at some point. If there isn't going to be any VR then move beyond motion controls and get back to the damn basics.

Nintendo also can't bank everything on just a few key titles, the whole point of consolidating is to increase output which means we should be getting as wide a variety as possible each year. If Mario launches with the system Metroid needs to be there save DKC for next year. Work towards a massive dungeon crawler type game in the style of Kingdom Hearts with Nintendo characters that makes good use of the Amiibo craze and get that out within year two. if they can up-port Smash and just focus on DLC characters, make a MAJOR deal out of launching Ice Climbers that will generate some buzz. They also need to set aside a team that does nothing but ports VC games so they can get 10 or more games out a week, preferably more.

The VC team and up-porting teams could work together to get some HD remasters going. If Nintendo could do one major franchise game a quarter like they are know for, but also step up VC and remasters, say do one every three months or so they could really increase interest in the machine. Focus on doing N64 and Game Cube HD-Remasters but don't do them like Wind Waker HD where they bank on it being a major release title, do it as an and one type deal, here is a new Pikmin game and a Super Mario 64 HD remaster 4 player, here is the new NX Mario Party and Star Fox Adventures HD remaster with alternate ending and streamlined game play. Here is the new Animal Crossing and Ocarina of time HD Remaster with whatever new content they can dream up, have a new Hd remaster to coincide with the every major title and ten new VC console games a week the hard core and casual Nintendo gamers come back and that gives 3rd parties incentive to return too.

I meant, PS4 is 2 years and 4 months old right now, or somewhere close to that, where was Wii U when it was 2 years and 4 months old, or whatever but it's okay I think I got the gist of it, PS4 is doing better than Wii U was so I think that tells me what I was wanting to know, thanks Louieturkey.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Any Chance the NX will support 4K?
« on: April 11, 2016, 10:55:15 AM »
PS4 will be three years old when it releases. **** it. I am not arguing with you god damn there is FORTY YEARS of video game history to PROVE that when a new console releases people leave behind last gen, it's been that way since 1975-ish. PS4 will be 3 years old, when NX launches. Not everyone has friends list, and by your logic nobody should even OWN a PS4 considering all those DLC, friends, etc you worry so much about WERE ALL ON 360, nobody had  a problem abandoning them to go to Ps4. People move forward, the world moves forward time doesn't stop because Sony releases a console, Sony is already preparing VR and PS4K, both of those are  more than enough proof, on top of the FORTY YEARS of history, if you are do god damn blind you can ignore forty years then by all means go ahead. Or you could look at the patterns and see that people are going to flock to the new machine if it has what they want, it has ALWAYS been that way since the beginning of time. The 5 year console cycle is a thing of the past, deal with it., not to mention the 85+ million gamers who haven't bought into this gen yet. I am not saying everyone is going to get NX in the first year, DUH! but there is not reason to believe, as of right now, that it even has to get all it's sales in year one. By the time it comes down in price, PS4 will be 4 years old, and showing its age. People will start to notice the performance upgrades of playing the same games on NX over PS4 and the benefit of having their cake and frosting or however the stupid saying goes, because they will have the PS4 3rtd party games people love and the Nintendo games people crave.

Evidence, look anywhere on the internet when Nintendo is doing poorly, everyone is clamoring for them to go 3rd party because they do want their games.

317
Yeah, I doubt there will be hardware backward compatibility, but Nintendo will undoubtedly resell those Wii U games one day beyond the enhanced ports of select games it will also undoubtedly release around launch.

Are you really so sure though? I mean we all love to think the Game Cube had some pretty amazing games but Nintendo has not done a very good job porting those over. GC-Wii, Wii to Wii U is the only time in Nintendo history b/c has even been a thing on the console side of things. If they truly are distancing themselves from Wii U, which they should by all means sweep it under the rug, then we shouldn't expect them to ever port Wii U games to NX. I would expect them to make brand new games for NX and make brand new sequels for games that deserve it. Nintendo wouldn't want you to play Mario Kart 8 Wii U on NX they want you to buy Mario Kart X.

Going from GC-Wii they kind of had to do b/c to sell that Zelda game.

Right now if Zelda U is going to be on NX we can expect it to be like GC to Wii in that the Wii U port will use and rely on the Game Pad but the NX will probably just go with traditional controls, a reversal. Or they will just not bother with releasing it on Wii U at all and just move it to NX. Wii U does not have the install base Game Cube had to worry about "abandoning" they are already abandoning it, they pretty much left it for dead since Splatoon released anyways.

318
They have released sub-100 handhelds in the past. With the way tech has been adapting lately there is a real belief they could manage that especially if the two are interconnected someway. Here is an idea, what if NX is just Wii U hardware with PS4-esque chipset but all the extra horespower comes from cloud computing? That might even be what Sony is planning with PS4K.

319
I was watching some Youtube video on a 3D NES Zelda tribute, I would prefer that to Wii U Zelda at this time. I am starting to lose all hope in this game.

I'm not forgetting those people. Like I said, I think the reason most of them are waiting is because they don't want to spend $400 (or $350, which isn't going to be a huge difference to most people who think $400 is too much) on a console and they're waiting until current gen consoles become more affordable. I doubt most people outside of ardent Nintendo fans even know that the NX is a thing that will be talked about this year (thanks in large part to Nintendo's complete reluctance to talk about it themselves), so I don't think there are millions of people holding off on an upgrade to see what it is, especially since Nintendo hasn't even officially announced that it will be a home console. No one knew about it before the beginning of 2015, so it certainly wasn't the thing stopping people from upgrading in 2013 and 2014. Like I said, for most people it was price, and putting another $350 or $400 console on the market isn't going to solve that problem for them.

I do think that's the market that Nintendo should target, but I guess where we disagree is how they should go about doing it. I think they need to make the best console possible that they feel comfortable selling at $250 if they want to attract a lot of those people, regardless of how it stacks it up to the PS4, and you're also much more likely to attract people who already have a PS4 or XB1 that way.

Again, I just think you are understimating the true size of the Nintendo fanbase. There have always been millions more Nintendo fans who would have bought the machine if it was on par with their expectations. SNES was the true successor to the NES but Playstation was the true successor for SNES for the vast majority of gamers. Many of them would glady return to Nintendo if they didn't have to scoff at the machines Nintendo keeps making.

On a dedicated Nintendo site they are the minority because we are all mostly die hard fans but on any non-Nintendo site or fanbase there is still a large outcry for Nintendo to return to glory. People who want a good machine from Nintendo are not fanboys rooting for sales like the Wii loyalists were, they are rooting for a Gamecube that doesn't cut corners. The ONE area most people would cut Nintendo slack these days unlike then is DVD, partly because unlike then everyone has dozens of multimedia devices in their homes now so expecting the Nintendo machine to also do those things is no longer mandatory, but on the gaming side people have been putting up with Nintendo BS for two DECADES. I don't know how old you are but it seems like you just don't remember the glory days of Nintendo or maybe it's been so long you have forgotten. Wii re-energized the core fanbase but that wasn't enough. Nintendo will NOT survive on them anyways, damn dude Wii U proved that. If NX ONLY sells to the die hard Nintendo fans its as good as done right now.

And I said it doesn't have to be $400 you are the one who keeps saying it does and I think you are dead wrong. They have sold machines at a reasonable loss in the past, we are not talking devestating losses, NX has been in development for two years and PS4 tech is already 2+ years old, the market moves faster now than it ever has, AMD has been innovating in recent years, Nintendo could cut costs where nobody would notice and get away with it, they have the cash reserves to take a small loss on the hardware and make up for it with the attach rate their consoles are famous for, they are UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP, they are facing a desperate time in their history that could make them go the way of Sega/Atari or they could rise up and get rid of Xbox. Also you seem to forget there are a lot of people NOT buying the Xbox One right now, those are also potential sales and the people not buying the Wii U, nobody, not you, or me, knows how many of them would buy and NX.

All I am saying is just for once I want Nintendo to bite the god damn bullet and just make the machine the entire fucking world has been asking them to since the damn N64 and IF it still fails fine we know for a fact the Nintendo brand is damaged beyond repair, if it succeed, and I believe it will, we are back to a Nintendo that can make aggressive moves going forward and hopefully remove the Xbox parasite from the world.

Even if they don't topple Xbox which is a pipe dream, let's be honest, they could return to their former glory, hell even N64 sales would have been damn good for most people. Right now they are struggling to get Game Cube sales and that is pretty bad all things considered.

But you also forget Nintendo has a cash stream on the side they can rely on to take some of the hit off NX, Amiibo, that doesn't look to be subsiding anytime soon and if they incorporate it into NX just right it could only improve their fortunes. They don't have to hit the $250 sweet spot, although honeslty I would LOVE IT if they did, but I think $300 is the best price the market can expect and at that price mass market penetration is possible, PS1 launched at that price and did phenomenally well.

Also again, you are underestimating the large number of PS4 owners who would trade in a PS4 for an NX IF Nintendo could make it worth their while and I believe there is a way to do it if they make the right console, and if all the rumors are to be believed then there is ample evidence that is something we can expect. At least something closer to what we want than Wii U was.

PS4 had a rough time in Japan at the beginning, but now it is building momentum that has it tracking above sales of the Wii U.

I know that, I was just wondering if at this same point in it's life if Wii U was doing better or worse than PS4 is doing right now, in Japan at least. But this thread goes on for miles so I didn't know where to start.

322
Adrock makes some good points except they didn't do ALL they could, they could have opened the flood gates on the Virtual Console, they could have made some quick and dirty ports of Game Cube and Wii games, more than they what five that they did? They could have spent less time/money/resources on DLC for the handful of games they do have and threw all of that at even just one more small time franchise to get something else out there. They threw Wii U under the bus because they were side tracked with the money making machine called Amiibo and then forgot that NX was even out there.

You are forgetting the millions of people who haven't upgraded yet, there is still room to bring them in.
A machine that tops PS4 wouldn't be that expensive, Nintendo has a lot more money, patents, and good will with their tech partners than I think you give them credit for. Also they wouldn't have to suffer massive losses, Wii U was sold at a loss but it turned profitable with the first game sold, they could afford to sell it at just enough loss to make it profitable at 2 games sold and considering that Nintendo has a high attach rate there is a chance they could do it. Also they have sole consoles for a loss before they do it all the time it isn't a new business model.
They could make a machine that is competitive and sell it for a reasonable $350 and people will buy it over the other two for many reasons. One the people who HAVE upgraded don't represent the entire gaming population, 2, there is a large number of them who are waiting to see what NX is and are holding off for that very reason, 3, people switch mid-generation ALL THE TIME, 4, Nintendo is not as fragile as you think they are they can afford a couple of years of heavy losses if it turns them profitable in the long term which would make more sense than going bancrupt pinching pennies. BTW, Nintendo is not as "conservative" as people claim they in fact are the biggest risk takers in the damn industry, they just don't always pay off.

Asking them to make the machine the entire gaming community is begging for would NOT be bad business sense it would sell like hotcakes just on the EFFORT and excitement alone it would garner.

324
So news has gotten so slow the world of Nintendo has resorted to discussing the logo. I am wondering how much longer people can maintain any sort of anticipation for this thing if they don't give us something to talk about soon.

I am curious how PS4 is doing compared to Wii U. Does anyone know where Wii U was in Japan at this same point in it's life? I kind of get the impression PS4 is doing better world wide but I keep hearing it's doing lousy in Japan even compared to Wii U, is that true?
