General Gaming / Is PS3 Sony's worst game console ever?
« on: February 04, 2016, 11:38:00 PM »
In the interest of being fair I figured I would start a similar discussion as Wii U (since I place it in PS3 generation NOT current) I would ask about the consoles that most closely resembles the Wii U in many ways.

I can honestly say that the PS3 is my least favorite of the Playstation consoles but I do find myself enjoying it more and more. One thing that I was turned off by originally, and for a very, very, very long time was how insanely over priced it was for how long it was insanely over priced. In a way it reminds me of the still criminally over priced Wii U.

I also noticed that the software library wasn't doing it for me for the longest time. I did find myself coming around partially with some of the HD remasters and HD collections but it also took Super Street Fighter IV to really push me into wanting one.

I also see some parallels with Wii U in that Sony bundled and forced an unnecessary feature onto the world that drove the cost up and did very little to actually improve gameplay for a very long time, that is Blu Ray drive. Realizing this, and how long the previous generation lasted makes me wonder if there is some logic to the Nintendo strategy of doubling down on Wii U now and trying to give it a second life by really proving the Game Pad concept and perhaps NX really is just, and only just, a handheld and the Wii U successor won't show up until two more years?

Staying on topic of PS3, I didn't find myself buying one until mere months before the PS4 launched and honestly while it has given me plenty of entertainment, I get the feeling that much of that is a mix of it being the anti-Wii and also really focusing on retro, something else the Wii U does rely heavily on. I think that is why I fell in love with PS4 early one, I just got the impression that with everyone falling in line it was going to be easier to find all the games I wanted. So far it has been pretty good to me. But I am starting to really go back and try to rediscover more PS3 games. I just wish they had done better at keeping the backwards compatibility and found other ways to cut costs in the early days.

General Gaming / Re: What's YOUR favorite game?

My favorite game has been Super Mario World for quite some time. Before that it was Pac-man (or specifically Ms. Pac-Man) but today it is a tie between Ms. Pac-Man and Super Mario World.

It is a little late but I was super excited to be a part of a political forum for my newspaper. We sponsored and moderated the local county candidates and I was co-moderator and official time keeper. I also got to meet several of the candidates and give out a few of my business cards. One candidate said all the right things, he was running for DA, but when I met him in person he was a complete asshole and now I am torn, vote based on principals or personality.

Anyways as a newspaper writer I can't really share my opinions publicly anyways, not meaning here as its a rules thing anyways, but I want to tell people the guy was a complete asshole. The other candidates at least acted like I matter, you know being press and all that. But I guess DA is one office that probably doesn't care much for the press anyways. Not like the ones running for Sheriff they know they are going to have to deal with us so kissing our ass is just a way of life for them.

But all things considered it was a lot of fun, and the TV crew was there so I was briefly on local television plus the "other" newspaper was there and we got to rub it in we got to control the ordeal they were just there to cover our press event.

The one I am furthest along in is a crime thriller told in flash backs and flash forwards. I don't want to say much about it without giving too much away. It deals with a man who goes crazy and turns into a serial killer. It is more the journey how he got there than the actual crimes though.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Is Wii U Nintendo's worst home console ever?
« on: February 04, 2016, 11:07:45 PM »
Then your thread title should have aligned more with TOPHATANT's spinoff, rather than having a negative connotation. But, I digress.

Graphics =/= Level of texture resolution or HD visuals. Fast Racing NEO has 4K resolution textures, and it looks detailed. But it certainly doesn't have much going for it in terms of aesthetics. Aesthetic is possibly the most important lesson Nintendo learned from some of their greatest successes like DKC and Wind Waker- pre-rendered graphics are an artistic choice, not a technical one. So the graphics aspect of the Wii is utter nonsense, in my opinion, unless you hopped on the HD train early and want some post-purchase rationalization. Likewise, the graphical difference between Wii U and other systems is nowhere near the difference between SNS-N64 or N64-GCN. Power, however, and performance- those are things that matter. They will always matter. So when Bayonetta 2 runs like butter and Xenoblade Chronicles X does open-world almost seamlessly, that's an example of a developer getting the most out of the system. However, on the flipside, the ****-show that was the Wii U User Interface in its early days was absolutely unacceptable, and Nintendo better realize that. Growing pains of the HD-transition or no, they need to come out of the gate with some better loading times, a better integrated system between applications, and a little more polish.

Because I was curious if others felt it was their worst, I was never going to consider it as the best that is ridiculous. to me.

At the time it had been over a decade since a proper 2D Mario game had been released for the home  console, so when Super Paper Mario was announced, to me at least, it felt closer to a true Mario game than Sunshine, or Galaxies did so I enjoyed it as a close enough. Then New Super Mario Bros. took off and I liked it very much.

184
I didn't like Thousand Year door, the first was playable but not memorable. I loved Super Paper Mario but felt it needed less talking and more platforming. I think that RPG's have been largely absent as a main console genre from Nintendo consoles for so long maybe they, Nintendo, just don't think they should waste time catering to an audience that has left them for Sony.

General Gaming / Re: The Sixth Generation General
« on: February 04, 2016, 12:26:23 PM »
The early days of any generation are like that, normally, but these last two it's been less obvious up front. There are Turbo Graphix and Genesis games you could almost swear belong on the NES, and there are early Playstation, Saturn, and even Jaguar games, that look like they belong on SNES or Sega CD.

I finally got my internet at the house so I was able to start downloading some of the games I got for Christmas. I started with Mortal Kombat X. I have to say I like it, it's Mortal Kombat, but as been the case for a while, I am having more fun unlocking crap and exploring the krypt than I am actually playing the proper fighting game.

I was playing Mortal Kombat X last night and my first impression was, this is the PS4 versions right I didn't accidentally get it on PS3 did? I was not blown away by the graphics at all like I was Deadly Alliance on GameCube. I remember the first time I saw Sonic Adventure in action I knew my PS1 and N64 days were numbered. I ended up getting a Game Cube once Sega made their announcement but if they had kept going I would have gotten a Dreamcast.

They might be able to keep the Cross in the name in Japan but I could see some group claiming it was religious propaganda in the west.

I like the idea of making the game cases red. But I want the console to be slick and black like everything else. The only color I would be okay with other than black is maybe silver or a shiny gray.

Well I feel bad, I started this thread hoping to have people come to defend the Wii U which is why I listed it's positives first, but I guess I should have known better.

I like the idea of more HD remakes and remasters but only to get those old games badly needed facelifts, not at all as padding for a thin line up or an excuse to cover up droughts.

I totally agree it was the golden age of gaming. Not in the traditional or literal sense like some say the arcade days of the 80's were but a true golden age when gaming was real, raw, and completely unrestricted. I think that the Dreamcast kicked things off nicely. I think the main reason why I lost interest in gaming is because the last gen was mostly Wii crap, too much retro they over did it in some cases, and a whole bunch of "epic" adventure games that were just choose your own adventure movies that had very little gameplay.

See, I loved that the GBA had all those ports, it was like a portable SNES but with more power. It didn't have much in the way of original games, but it did have some of the best entries in certain franchises like the Sonic Advance games were all pretty cool, there was a unique Mortal Kombat to the system and some great Dragon Ball Z and Mega Man games, and that Mario Kart and Metroid were both fantastic games too.

3D platformers, wayside, I guess you don't own a Wii U as that is just about all it has for games. ;)

If we are talking about Dreamcast to Xbox era I would say there is just too much to talk about, that "generation" and the SNES to PS1 era were the two most interesting, and most talked about, periods in gaming as far as I am aware. Game Cube is one of my all time favorite gaming consoles and I still keep my Slim PS2 close by so I think for me that period was one of the better periods in gaming.

General Gaming / Re: What is the most obscure, retro console you own?
« on: February 02, 2016, 08:52:36 AM »
I guess by Mop It Ups post in the other thread, we could all say Wii U is retro, and it is pretty obscure for all intents and purposes.

195
They could use Microsoft logic and called it the Nintendo 8, or Nintendo Entertainment System 2 or Nintendo Entertainment System 8 and they beat PS4 and Xbox One in the name by numbers category. They really do need to let people know that they are still making consoles, when I tell people I own a Wii U they ask me what is it, so I stopped explaining it and instead of saying I own a Wii U I just say the new Nintendo system and they say, oh cool I didn't know they had a new one and then I can talk about it.

The fact they are the ONLY gaming company left from the early days still going is something they need to flaunt, they don't just have nostalgia on their side, if they play it right they have longevity on their side and they could use that in their marketing, not some silly "Mario grew up with you too" mushy crap but more like the Play it Loud, Now You Are Playing with Super Power, thing, something like, Hey Remember Atari, Sega, Coleco, Amiga, no well that's because you were too busy playing Nintendo and guess what we are still here, alive and kicking. It doesn't need those words but that message, they survived the the crash, they survived the 90's barrage of endless gaming devices, they survived the ipads and the androids, and they put Microsoft in their place. Nintendo needs to capitalize on that and get their damn balls back. This always apologizing hurts their image, if they really believe in the Wii U fucking have the back bone to show it, if they do NOT believe in the NX to have the balls to come out and say hey don't get a stupid out dated nothing PS4 that only plays the same tired **** your getting bored of by now, but a fucking NX that has all this new exciting plus really cool retro schick stuff you forgot how much you loved, and play off that, whatever the new feature is FUCKING OWN IT. They need their damn balls they need confidence that is all everything they do will be better if they act like they believe in it and stop apologizing for their **** ups.

Cool, I was worried it would flop and then all those Nintendo themes would get canceled because the main reason I would get it, aside from the offtv play, is for the Nintendo stuff. I wonder if it supports Amiibo and if they will start making Minecraft Amiibo soon.

198
I think Luigi Dude missed the point, waggle vs. traditional controls had nothing to do with those companies that went out of business, that was all the coming of the iPad that erased the casual market from the console space and all those smaller companies that only made casual games or licensed garbage were the ones to go under.
I guess if you don't like Metal Gear, Castlevania, Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Assassin's Creed, Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Mortal Kombat, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Dexter, Sonic, Ninja Gaiden, Tomb Raider, Dragon Age, Diablo, Zone of  Enders, Tekken, God of War, Prince of Persia, Batman, Bayonetta*, Gran Turismo, Fable, and The Last of Us and would rather play Nicktoons, Disney Princess, bad movie based knock off, 1000th Tetris clone, mini game collection, and the only casual game worth mentioning, Bomberman, than yes last generation was terrible for traditional gaming.

Wii was a damn fluke anyone that still thinks it was going to save the industry, by the way most of the companies that did go under made **** cash grabs for the Wii too, well I guess you are as delusional as the boys at Nintendo. Unless you are just one of them undercover which makes no sense so I retract that theory.

What hurt most of those publishers was NOT the shift to HD and the rising cost of production, the smart ones are thriving on the digital channels like XBLA, PSN, Steam, and eShop. The ones that failed were the same shitty companies that kept making the same shitty cash in's every generation with one or two token games here and there to appease fans of some long forgotten genre/franchise while the companies that knew not to jump into the iPad/Android/Wii marketplace survived because they know, as does Hollywood, that big budgets can bring in big profits. Just ask Disney who spent four billion dollars on a movie that is smashing box office records left and right how if you invest the right money the audience will come back. Or ask Sony who is investing their entire fortune on PS4 and it is handily paying off. Yeah I guess Sony should be worried that their console is clearing out the garbage developers and only leaving behind the top quality companies who have the money to make the games the market is asking for, because if the market wasn't asking for those types of games then they would reject them you know that right? It is simple economics if people were tired of Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, and Madden then they would just stop buying them. oh right those games aren't made for a Nintendo console so they are ****, like Bayonetta was **** until it showed up on Wii U then the Nintendo faithful showed up to sings it's praises as the "hard core" game gamers needed to "bring hard core gamers back to Wii U" as if one game was going to erase all the negative press of the countless games NOT on the console.

Okay sure, those games all SUCK until they are released on a Nintendo console then they are touted as "proof" Nintendo matters. No, waggle was a double edged sword, it brought in the casuals, the grandmas , the budget conscious family with kids, and the die hard Nintendo faithful. The casuals, budget family with kids, and the grandmas all got ipads and forgot what Nintendo was, the die hard Nintendo faithful are too small a group to matter anymore, are shrinking each generation, and are more sharply divide on everything than American politicians are.

It sounds interesting perm, I am in the process of trying to finish my novel so I might come back and ask you some questions on the self publishing thing if I decide to go that route. I work in the media business so I have publisher friends I will show it to first but I am open to all possibilities, and I also enjoy creative freedom doing something yourself affords.

but Mop It Up if these people are new to Nintendo how interested are they going to be in decades old games that rely heavily on nostalgia to appeal to US, the core crowd? I have nephews that love Nintendo but they won't go further back than SNES for 2D and Wii for 3D, they won't even touch a Game Cube it's ugly to them (the graphics mostly) how many young kids know what an NES is? If they have a family member in the house to expose them to those games they already likely have done just that. My sister owned a Wii, loved it to death, and she still bought an SNES to show her kids the, in her words "right way to play" those games. We have that but a parent who grew up on Sony that gets their kid the Nintendo because it is cheap, plays all the kid friendly games and they don't want an expensive player in the house, they aren't going to show their kids the kind of care for these old games we do, a kid in the eshop just looking for a game to download is not likely to pick Wrecking Crew, Duck Hunt, hell any of the old NES games, unless they tried NES Remix first and then they might as well stick to the remix versions.

I love the Virtual Console but it is terribly flawed, yes in many ways it is better than PSN and Steam but in many ways it's not.
