I'm more worried about Nintendo's weird attachment to filler content. My hope is that Nintendo doesn't pad the world with things just to have something there. If the game is only 20 hours long, make it the best 20 hours it can be. An open world is wasted if it's empty, but being full of chores is just as bad. "Collect 77 of these things." Is that fun; or is it just there?

I would prefer for the side quests in this Zelda to be more along the lines of Majora's Mask...less about collecting a bunch of things and more about completing tasks for people in the world that add to their story and character development.  That's one way Nintendo could make this "open world" game feel more alive to me.  Also, collecting tons of items has the potential to be really abused in a huge overworld.

I'm finally getting around to playing Link's Awakening DX for the first time (one of the few Zelda games I haven't played).  I'm only at the golden leaf quest (before the third dungeon), but have pretty much enjoyed every aspect of the game so far.  I love the item that allows Link to jump, the bizarre 2D platforming sections, and even the part where Link carries the chain chomp around.  As other people have said, the game is challenging, but doesn't seem unfair so far.  My only big complaint is that you only have two buttons to map to items.  Obviously, this is a Gameboy limitation, but it is pretty tedious to have to constantly remap items.

I had no issues with hard locks in Teslagrad... until the final boss. I knew his patterns and was ready to finish the game, but twice the game hard locked just before I could get the final hit.  Kind of sums up the overall feelings I have about the game - it's so close to being good, but can't quite cross the finish line.

I had this exact same experience.  The other problem for me was the controls. Teleportation had to be really precise...especially on that final boss.  It took me forever just to get close to beating him.

Fighting the camera aside, do the rest of the mechanics feel good?

... but I played all as a teenager at a time in my life where I had the ability to get truly immersed into these stories.

I think a lot of my fond memories of video games, books, and movies from childhood are less about the content itself and more about the time I spent immersing myself in the universe, lore, fan fiction, etc.  I do sort of miss being able to do that  :-\ .

I'll probably have to go with Majora's Mask. It's certainly the game that I've spent the most time thinking about...something about the world design really drew me in.

The game was just infinitely easier to play after getting it. Had Nintendo gone the extra mile and created a new dungeon or two from scratch just for the port, Wind Waker HD would have been perfect.

I agree.  I just wished they hadn't hidden the swift sail behind that auction mini-game. It should have been a more obvious upgrade. By the time I bought the game, I actually forgot how to get it and had to look it up online.

But you don't ever have to change direction when sailing. Hell, you have 90 degrees of maneuverability no matter what direction you choose to change the wind.

True, but Swift Sail was great for Tri-Force shards and finding all the fish to fill in the map.  I actually quite enjoyed these segments this time around...just freely circling the islands looking for the fish, treasure, etc.

I would actually be OK "The Nintendo", or some variation of their name, with some really cool Kanji in the logo.

The intro was overlong, yes, but the true annoyance for me were those kids (Malo and gang).  They were constantly talking and swooning and getting captured.  I really hated that Ilia (or whatever her name was) was such an integral part of the story.  I just couldn't get into it.

Overall, I loved Twilight Princess, especially the last half of the game with all the cool dungeons. I agree with most here, though, that there doesn't seem to be anything enticing that the HD remake adds for $60.

FreezeMe looks like a surprisingly competent SM64 knockoff, albeit a little generic.  Does anyone know anything about this game?  I can't seem to find many reviews except on Steam.

I haven't played a Paper Mario game since it came out on the N64.  I would gladly welcome a new on the Wii U.  It was such a memorable title for me.

The dungeon sounds a lot like a repeat of the Cave of Ordeals...which is probably all I should have expected.

The Giant's Wallet's sole purpose was to afford to Magic Armor and give it ammo (If I remember correctly haven't played in forever).
Give it ammo....yes, but the Magic Armor is only like 598 rupees once you fund Malo Mart's move to Castle Town.

I kind of want to see a fundamental change to the Magic Armor--like it only consumes rupees if you are hit instead of automatically. Is there an amiibo for that?

Didn't Star Wars come out first?

It did not. Star Trek came out in the 60's.  Star Wars came out in the late 70's.

89
Saw it with my wife.  She was a huge Star Wars fan growing up and I was more of a Trekkie. Both of us came away with the same sentiment--"good, not great".  Plot holes abound, and, despite good character concepts, the movie moved too quickly to fully develop them.

As a Star Trek fan, I am also a little pissed that the Jedi mind trick thing turned into the Vulcan mind meld.  I get the sense that Abrams was like "hey, remember that cool mind meld we did in Star Trek? Well,....I bet Jedi could totally do that too!"  But, whatever.

My favorite part of the movie, by far, was BB-8.  Awesome design.

As much as I love Splatoon (and am still playing it), I'm growing tired of all the updates now.  They were brilliant for a while, but the excitement has definitely worn off.  They mostly remind me of how I just want Nintendo to be working on a second iteration of the game.

Ok...never mind my previous post. I should have googled before posting. Apparently, modern day haikus are not necessarily constrained to the 5-7-5 form.  I feel dumb now.

Not to be too picky, but the last line of #18 has six syllables ("Ma-gi-cal sound show-er")!  Great idea for a GOTY list, though.  Some days, I wish all game reviews were in haiku form.

Got my Wii U in the mail (early in the morning too). It was the Smash Splat bundle. Been updating it all morning (slow internet hurts a lot). Got Wind Waker HD and Xenoblade Chronicles X coming soon. Twilight Princess pre-ordered. Got to find a Gamecube adaptor soon. Console itself is very nice though. I'm excited.

You should be! You have enough content there to keep you occupied through all of next year.

I think my biggest gripe with the game so far is how you can do well in every race but make ONE mistake, and that costs you the whole cup. Since you don't lose a life when you crash, you can easily do well in the first three races, crash near the end, get ninth place, and end up losing the cup. It's annoying, but not something that has ruined the experience for me.

Sounds about like Mario Kart when you are going for three stars.

ONLY TEN MORE DAYS UNTIL STAR WARS!!!!

My hype for this peaked a while ago.  Disney has marketed it to death...

I really can't decide whether to get this one or not.  I quit Dream Team after 28 hours (I know, probably only a dozen hours from the end of the game) because I was still getting tutorials at that point and the mechanics were getting stale for me.  This seems to have improved on some of those issues, but it still seems like it's too long.

Box Boy (3DS):

I was also looking forward to this, but at about halfway through I'm finding it pretty boring. It's hard to even call it a puzzle game at this point given how easy it is, even including collecting the crowns. It looks good and has a catchy soundtrack, but my progress has thus far been perfunctory. Not a huge disappointment, though, given that it was cheap in the first place and discounted for the Black Friday period.

For me, the first six or seven worlds were really easy, but the difficulty started to ramp up (especially getting  the crowns) around world 8 or 9.  I mean, it was no Toki Tori, but I found it challenging enough at that point to be enjoyable.  I think there are 20 worlds total.  I just played it for a couple of hours on plane for the holiday. It's perfect kind of game for that setting.

Was Ooccoo really all that necessary? I mean, I don't think I picked her up in every dungeon but I never used her that much either. She was just an amusing thing to discover in each one.

She was necessary if you wanted to quit the game in the middle of a dungeon and not have traverse the whole thing just to get back to the room you were in.  I didn't use her the first time I played through the game because I mostly finished the dungeons in one sitting.  It should really be a standard feature of the Zelda series, though--if you save your game it should return precisely where you left off...not at the beginning of an area or dungeon every time.
