TalkBack / Re: Star Fox Zero Delayed to 2016
« on: September 18, 2015, 05:46:03 PM »
I'm actually more excited about Star Fox now that it's been delayed.  The game looked pretty bare at E3...both graphically and content-wise.  Mario Maker, Fatal Frame, and Xenoblade will occupy me the rest of the year.  And, I agree with those above that they should use the opportunity to really push Xenoblade.

A humorous course:

Wiggler Torture: 4701-0000-0040-2935

I hope this idea hasn't been done yet.

I initially assumed the level creation parts would only work as single player experiences.  However, we've already had quite a few entertaining family moments with everyone watching the TV and working together to build a level.

The Found Levels 1-2: B92E-0000-0014-A559
This one's a bit of a maze, but not too long or too difficult.

Very short level, but requires a couple of precision moves.

TalkBack / Re: Pokemon Go Mobile Augmented Reality Game in Development
« on: September 10, 2015, 08:22:58 PM »
So how long until a misguided mobile effort moves the bulk of the Pokémon fanbase off of Nintendo devices onto phones?  When a kid asks for a Nintendo handheld Nintendo should never be giving the parent the excuse to say "Pokémon is on our phone, just play it there".

It's a good point, but I don't think keeping Pokémon on Nintendo hardware would have been sustainable forever.  Eventually, some new IP will capture the hearts of the next generation of kids and it will most likely been on mobile (Angry Birds came close, but didn't quite have the legs).  This seems like the best move to keep Pokémon alive as long as possible and still make money off it.  Besides, it may force Nintendo to go for something new...and I'm totally OK with that.

Also, parents will always say to their kids, "you have games on your phone, just play those" regardless of the situation.

TalkBack / Re: Pikmin 4 In Development, Mario Galaxy Looking At New Hardware
« on: September 07, 2015, 01:02:43 PM »
This is great to hear.  Pikmin 3 made me fall in love with the franchise in a way that 1 and 2 did not.  Simply using the same assets with a new story would be enough for me to buy it, but I can also see a couple of obvious avenues for improvement.  Foremost, the story mode should have a two-player co-op this time.  I suppose there could also be some clever online integration.

Did anyone here call Nintendo to receive the complimentary Mario Maker book with the digital purchase?  If so, have you received it yet?  I remember Jonny mentioning on RFN that the Nintendo support person said they were trying to mail them out early (before the game releases).

No more paying for iOS games ever.

I made this decision three years ago and haven't regretted it.

I wonder if you can use Amazon reward points with these.  That would certainly be an advantage.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: When do you decide to upgrade?
« on: August 31, 2015, 09:35:09 PM »
I upgraded mostly for the super stable 3D and think it was totally worth it.  At the time, I also wasn't keen on the XL, but have grown to really like it.  Being "worth it" is, of course, entirely subjective.  Some think buying a new smartphone every year or two is "worth it"...others do not.  I don't spend money often (I don't even buy many games), so I have no problem buying new hardware when it comes out.  I was going to sell the old 3DS to make up some of the cost, but decided to keep it so my wife and I can play local multiplayer.  It also might be nice to have an extra for my kid when he gets a little older.

I kept the demo on my Wii U and fired it up again after reading this review.  I think the lag (significant to me) in single player mode is the only thing holding me back.  I need 2D platformers to be lag-free.
Are the "hitches" mentioned in this article less frequent than in the demo, or about the same?

I think they're over for this calendar year.  Nintendo needs to focus on restructuring their leadership.  There is already a well-publicized roadmap of games coming out and any additional details they want to release could happen through traditional press releases.

As for next year, part of me wants to see the directs again since I genuinely looked forward to them.  But, I also see this as an opportunity for Nintendo to rebuild its relationship with the press and try something different.  To answer your question, it is still too soon to tell.

I also don't mind the daily unlock scheme.  It will keep the level editor simple at first and give me an opportunity to really play with each of the items.

(Also, as a Marshmallow I'd say 40-45% of my matches were civil wars.)

I'd say I played other Marhmallow teams 75-80% of the time.  Hopefully, next splatfest they choose something a little more even in popularity.  Actually, I wonder if they could pull off a three team choice splatfest.  That could make things interesting.

I played about an hour of the update last night.  Overall, I'm super impressed. I love the two new weapon types --they seem to add more strategy for everyone and feel good to use.  The Urchin Underpass redesign is significantly more open feeling (a good thing).  I also appreciate the little touches, like new music during the stage battles.

And **** Battletoads on the NES. Seriously, I've never seen a game so gleefully eager to instant kill you in my entire life. I don't think it's actually possible to beat that game, even with Rare Replay's pre-N64 game Rewind feature (which lets you always rewind about 30 seconds of gameplay in the past).

At the Classic Games Fest in Austin a couple of weeks ago they had a station to challenge people just to beat the speeder bike level.  I never saw a single person do it.

Ok, I finally got past the third boss...thanks for the tips.  The way I dealt with the backtracking portion after that was to completely die in each area.  Continuing after you die sends you to the beginning of your current area.  So I quickly got back to area 1 and found hover capsules to continue from there.

I'm even excited about some of the smaller changes...like more music coming to the stages.  I'm kind of tired of hearing the same death metal during kelp dome.
