I also see your point with the game not being finished argument but that’s not Nintendo’s style at all. In fact their whole mantra has always been release a finish game.
Mario Kart 7 says hi. Missing tons of basic modes and they had to patch a fix in for at least 4 different gamebreaking bugs.

Also, Wind Waker, where they introduced a triforce hunt to cover up 2 cut dungeons.

Mario Sunshine using coin missíons to cover up missing worlds.

Smash 4 on Wii U STILL not having a tournament mode.

Hell the Wii U at launch. Everything gets a 40 second loading screen, have fun.

Ok first of all you can go to any game and nip pick over what wasn’t included. Eventually you have to stop working on a game.

I think you’re reaching a little there. This isn’t Skyrim like where the game was basically unplayable at launch for PS3. Oh and how about GTA and how the online was broken oh and shall we talk about Master Chief collection? How about other companies that release unfinished games with a day 1 patch or hold content for DLC

Smash 4 has enough content to last you decades and you are complaining about it missing one mode that will eventually be included later? Actually correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t all that content going to be added in a FREE update later?

Though Wii U I agree completely but mmm well it’s not a game so yeah that’s my defense on that one. Lol.

Naw, Naw, what splatoon really needs is support for the NES Zapper :smug:

Come on guys. The Power Glove is where is at. But really I’m disappointed in the crew. They fought for Pro support but clearly didn’t fight for the Wii Balance board. Tis tis.

If I wanted a weekly argument with Gui, I know how to get it. I will point out that I asked listeners to go back to my E3 impressions - which were very high. The game still mechanically plays well.

I think the "control choice is a developer decision" is a fine point, but the devs opened the door by saying it will support offline multiplayer. Explicitly stated, the game already already DOES have Pro support in some contexts. I can see why people want to play with the Pro Controller if they know the game has already solved the problem.

The concern I state is that the game gets its value from online. I don't know that the community will be active.

Additionally, I'm not happy about the running trend of releasing games in near-or in some cases-semi completed state. A lot of stuff is missing from Splatoon's launch that seems largely inexcusable.
The concern about the game having an online community months after the game is a valid one but I think Nintendo fans are a hardcore bunch that will keep that game alive for a long time. It might not be a huge CoD community but I’ll be a fine one. I can still hope on Black Ops 2 on Wii you and play normal Death match just fine. Maybe not some of the other modes but that game has about 100000 modes. Splatoon will be more focus I honestly believe that you won’t’ have trouble with the community with this game. I really really do.

I also see your point with the game not being finished argument but that’s not Nintendo’s style at all. In fact their whole mantra has always been release a finish game.

I think they are holding back that content as a carrot to keep players coming back to the online and making sure that your concern about the community going away doesn’t happen. By releasing this content sprinkled throughout the months is a way to go back to the game similar to Mario Kart 8 but in a smaller scale.

Plus is free James. I mean it’s hard to argue with that you know.

As for the Pro controller the guy with the pro will be at a disadvantage? No map and no motion and I know some of you guys hated the motion but if you take the time to learn the new style of playing it’s actually very accurate and gives you an advantage.

People hated the motion driving in Mario Kart Wii and some of the best players in that game used the wheel.

Well no not really. Is just the Wii U is in a unique position where it supports multiple control options but nothing says the people should decide anything. The developers decide what control method they want to support.

Mario Galaxy didn’t support the classic or Pro. Tons of games haven’t supported other control options and I think it’s silly for people to complain about games not having unique wii u features then complain when pro support isn’t there. MMmm ok.

Zombi U didn’t support the Pro either for single player. I understand Splatoon doesn’t incorporate the pad as much as Zombi U but it still pretty important to look at the map on screen and to teleport. Now could you have a map on screen? Of course you can but the devs wanted you to take that risk reward of looking down on the pad but also being vulnerable like in zombie you when you manage inventory.

I find it hilarious that long timers here are getting defensive about me giving my opinion on their opinions. Lol.

I felt the conversation was a bit negative on a game we still don’t know much about. I would bet the house the game isn’t as feature loaded as other shooters just how Pikmin was a lighter take on its respective field.

I go back to my previous comment about Iphone vs Androids. Splatoon will be a very polished, simpler and more approachable take on an established area.

Plus compare pikmin 1 with 3. Night and day except Splatoon has the ability to get patched and updated to flesh it out with time. Free updates too.

That’s my 2 cents.

My point wasn't that Nintendo should let people decide what controllers they support in their games. My point was that people should be able to decide for themselves what the best way to play the game is. That's why "the Gamepad is the better way to play" isn't a valid justification for a lack of Pro Controller support in online multiplayer, at least to me. The only reason the Pro Controller shouldn't be supported in online multiplayer is if Gamepad is so integral to the game that it'd be effectively impossible to play without it, or if they came up against some other hurdle related to working in Pro Controller support. We obviously know the latter can't be the reason since we know it's going to be in local multiplayer. And while I agree that this is one of the better ways they've used the Gamepad, it's not so integral that there is no way you could play without it. And you don't even necessarily have to play without it; like Jonny said, there's no reason you can't have the Gamepad next to you while you're playing with the Pro Controller.

I don't think anyone is being particularly negative. People are just asking (legitimate) questions. You can be excited about a game and still have questions or doubts. I agree with what you said in your other post; people need to temper their expectations. I think you do that by thinking critically about the game after the excitement of playing the stress test has worn off (especially for those of us who were playing the game for the first time). If it's all excitement, all the time, that's how you end up being disappointed and possibly disliking a good game simply because it couldn't live up to your lofty expectations. If you go into it with your eyes wide open, at least you already know where the potential shortcomings might be and can devote more time to appreciating the parts of the game that are actually good.

No you know you make good points and I think you can see it both ways you know.

I just I hear the gang talking about call of duty and other shooters and I’m like come on guys!!! I love the show man I really really do but the crew makes me pull my hair at times. I mean ive been a Nintendo fan since the NES in 86 and by now we should know what to expect.

I understand the guys want the features already standard in other shooters but this is Nintendo. They do things their way and it’s been like this since forever.

Personally I ok with the simplistic approach since I’m not big on shooters. I also understand the other side of it but I wish looking at things from a glass half full perspective would creep up more in the show instead of weekly Gui vs RFN.

They are starting to turn into the grumpy old Nintendo get of my lawn guys. Lol. No no better yet the old guys from the Muppets that criticize everything lol.

I know some people prefer pro controllers but in this game with the map being soooo important and the instant jump to positions why oh why would you choose the pro over the pad?

People complain that Nintendo should include the pad more often and then they do basically is like no pro support no deal. Aye.

I think being Nintendo fans you should temper expectations. I think it's clear by now that splatoon won't be like call of duty or other shooters in online options features and support. Mario kart and smash kept it simple as well. It's the Nintendo way and to compare splatoon to other shooters is silly.

I mean call of duty is the android of shooters and splatoon is the iPhone. People who have iPhones Accept simplicity but highly optimized experience. You want androids go get an android but don't have one and wish it was like the other.

to be fair I wasn't sold on the game until the direct and demo. Those two combined really sold me on the game. I'm not a big online shooter guy (except halo 2 back in the day) but this game was tons of fun without some jack ass calling me every four letter word in the book.

People should be able to decide for themselves how they like to play the game, rather than having a single decision forced on them, and that's the issue. If a Pro Controller and an on-screen map don't make for as good an experience as playing with the Gamepad, people will go back to playing with the Gamepad. Personally, after playing the game, I think I'd prefer an on-screen map (even if it wasn't as good). I'd definitely prefer the feel of the Pro Controller for a game like this. At the very least, I'd like to have the option to try it.

If they don't support the Pro Controller online, it's not a huge deal for me. But I said the same thing about no voice chat. And friend matching not coming until August. And no loadout changes during matches. Individually these aren't huge issues, but collectively they're a little troubling. It doesn't leave a lot of room for other shortcomings in the game, a lot of which the guys brought up on the show. You're right; Splatoon is a different enough concept that it shouldn't be directly compared to most other shooters. That doesn't mean you should lower the bar for features that are pretty basic and have been for many, many years though. It's not an issue of the game not having tons of features like the newest iteration of CoD, it's about the game seemingly missing standard features. I'm sure the core gameplay is going to be fun as hell, but I still wish Nintendo would stop giving people reasons not to get this game. They should be going out of their way to eliminate as many obstacles as possible since how good this game ultimately ends up being depends on how large and invested the community is going to be.

I sincerely wanted to watch the Direct Before that show but didn't have a good chance to do so. I've been extremely busy for the last few weeks and just now got to see the Direct. No major surprises for me -- the campaign is more distinct than I realized, with a lot of special assets and good usage of the platforming mechanics. I'm still curious to hear about how the game strings together those levels and missions. As I knew would be the case, my other questions about the online infrastructure, Pro controller support, and meta-game were not answered by the Direct. It'll just be a matter of time. I have no interest in feeding Nintendo's pre-order/launch buzz machine. It's not so reliable for a game like this.

I know some people prefer pro controllers but in this game with the map being soooo important and the instant jump to positions why oh why would you choose the pro over the pad?

Good show.

The Splatoon segment was a healthy dose of needed skepticism and questioning that is far too absent in the talk of video games. Not a surprise that some drive-by tweeters or second-hand forumers have taken that pill poorly. Some of the questions and concerns are addressed in the pre-release coverage of Splatoon, but many are things that no one will have answers to until a few months after release. I find gleeful, somewhat morbid excitement in the unknowns of Splatoon as some dark part of me is anticipating how Nintendo will screw it up. Hearing the Splatoon segment provided some much needed contrast that my attitude with Nintendo's first foray in to well-trodden territory is different.

I should note that I'm eagerly waiting to buy my copy of Splatoon at launch as I'm loving a lot of what I see in preview coverage and not seeing much to dissuade me.

Second hand? Lol. Wow.

I think the crew was pretty negative at times. Yes the game has a lot of unanswered questions but like gui said they didn't even watch the direct. Basically uninformed opinions. Still considering the game isn't even out yet and early previews of the final game suggest it has a much better single player than Titan fall.

Hey guys good show. Thanks for going over my back log email in detail.

I’m chipping away slowly at it while not impulse buying nearly as much as I used too.

It helps too that a lot of games last gen ranged in the 8-12 hour mark. I recently passed Bioshock 2, Transformers war for cybertron and Bioshock Infinity. All 10 hour games pretty much unless you really really take your time.

I’m trying to avoid rpg’s and huge meaty games like Grand Thef Auto until I’ve knocked off a good amount of these short but great games.

That’s my strategy at the moment.

PS. Trying to play my 360 backlog made it EVEN more clear how that system was pretty much 99% shooters!!!!!

Yeah that was weird. He’s been in a mood the last few podcast or something.
...

Or he just has different opinions and doesn't mind voicing them. (Crazy concept, right?)

I feel GoldenEye (Wii) is a mediocre game, and that Kirby's Adventure (NES) gets more love than it really deserves. Neither game is bad, but neither changed my world or were something I couldn't have lived without.

Gui has slightly different taste in games. Sometimes I agree with his views, sometimes not.  But it's always funny to see people get all up in arms when he doesn't enjoy the same games they do.

Lol calm down lol.

I was just messing about the mood what do I care.

It was a fun poke at him shitting on games lately. Plus is his own self doing since he's playing games he's admitted to not even liking like first person shooters and old school platformers.

I like gui a lot he's my favorite out of the 4 so you don't have to get all defensive.

Goldeneye Wii imo is far from mediocre. You might not like it but it's not a bad game at all. Kirby for the nes always drops my jaw at how damn impressive it looks. This game blew me away graphics wise back on the day. For a nes game.

I'm in Giillaume's camp for FPSes. I bought 007 for Wii on others' recommendations to see if I could enjoy a "good" FPS, too. I concluded I was terrible at it and also bored by the third mission.

Kirby's Adventure and Kirby 64 are good games, though.
While I disagree about Goldeneye I completely agree about Kirby 64. That was such a great game. Still is actually as I recently passed it again on the VC.

Listening to Guillaume's harsh take and bad experience with Goldeneye 007 Wii's story mode was hard to take. Perhaps this speaks badly of the first-person shooter genre since 2007 (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's year of release), but Goldeneye 007's light stealth elements and relatively low body count is an interesting, novel, and fun experience. This is coming from a person who has played many first-person shooter campaigns as well as playing a no kills and no alerts run of Metal Gear Solid 4 on Liquid Easy (sorry!).

Oh wait, this is coming from the person who ranks Kirby's Adventure so low in the series' pantheon? The game that is on my short-list for quick response to the question, "What's your favorite game of all time?"

Well, that's just bad taste in video games then. :p

-----

Really enjoyed the eulogy for Konami's console game development. I hope these mini-feature discussions on the underpinnings and machinations of the video games industry become a somewhat regular thing, especially during the lean times of new releases. Though, I don't want Radio Free Nintendo to be a video game news show. Your peers are covering that.

Aww, no love for the otaku stuff? Senran Kagura 2 might be a great, voluminous game! Kidding aside, it is very sad to see the shift of Japanese game development in to mobile games. The whimsy, not serious, and sometimes special brand of stupidity of Japanese console video games is most of what video games are to at the moment. With any luck, Japanese independent video game developers and hobbyist software circles will break out of the doujinshi/comiket shell and have their games available around the world on all platforms. That should help things, if only for a little bit.

Yeah that was weird. He’s been in a mood the last few podcast or something.

I enjoyed Goldeneye on the Wii a lot and thought the pointer controls were highly customizable and worked just fine IMO.

Hearing him bash that game, and DK64 has been brutal for me. I’m playing DK64 right now and while obviously flawed it’s still a good game IMO. Goldeneye I thought was a very good game that successfully mashed old and new bond into something unique. The multiplayer was tons of fun too.

Even though Konami hasn’t done much in the past 10 years or so they were a huge part of my childhood.

Ninja Turtles
Contra
Castlevania

Just to name a few.

I miss that white screen with the logo. Is sad to see what is happening to the Japanese game market and developers and I grew up with their games and tend to favor their style over the US gritty realism.

Don’t get me wrong I like Batman and Gears as much as the next guy but in-between I want me some quirky Japanese games to mix it up and have a nice balance.

214
The aiming with WiiMote was the only thing I thought was better about Twilight Princess on Wii vs GameCube. It felt pretty solid and far more accurate than using the stick to aim in Wind Waker (what I was coming from) and being able to aim while moving was really useful. But to me, better camera control, true multiple item equip at once, and not having to deal with "shake, shake, shake" sword combat makes the GCN version feel better in the end. I understand the motion controls for the sword in Skyward (even if I prefer it was standard controls), but in Twilight it is just shaking the controller causes what is equivalent to a single button input, and doesn't offer any benefit besides making my wrist really hurt after a while (though all wii games do this to me).

If the GameCube game had supports widescreen I would have gotten that one. But as it is widescreen is too important to me.

215
say what you will about the motion controls the aiming is actually better then Skyward Sword /fact

That's true. I think the reason being is that Princess uses the pointer and Skyward uses motion plus for pointer.

That's why you always have to keep pressing down on the d pad.

216
This game is going to get crapped on by the guys but besides the slow opening and the rupee messages I'm enjoying the game. The waggle controls don't bother me at all and the pointer for arrows and hookshot works great.

This game feel somewhere along the lines of Nintendo trying to satisfy OoT fans and their own creative needs and they got stuff in the middle probably not appeasing neither.

Haha yup I did. I wouldn't put up with it in a modern game but with dk I give it slack because it's a product of its time.

But it does help tremendously. Now the camera in jet force Gemini is far worse imo. I loved that game back then too! Lol.

Gui is a man-God with the patience of a saint. He could assert his opinion more forcefully sometimes but I appreciate his restraint too.
James can be tiresome. Not always. Take the note, James. More often, he's good.
Lindy's rogueish, devil-may-care laziness adds a bit of fun and balance. He's best when he's fully engaged and has something of substance to talk about which isn't as often as I would like, but we all got lives and jobs, so whatever.
Jonny is the glue, the captain, the venerable and sage host. Humble, intelligent, innate, irreplaceable. If he can be faulted, it is for not reigning in James during his "low" moments.

Snark for the sake of it is so old and boring. It's not why I listen. Jokes are funny, snark is pointless. And it's cheap, too easy. I expect better and cleverer material, if you're doing material at all. If not, just chat. We like that.
We're all guilty of snark. I get it. It's fun. It takes effort to not just be glib and stupid and trash stuff. Fight it! It's hard but worth it.

I think Lindy is perfect since the mic might be too crowded if he was always talking as well. Kind of like how a color commentator chims in here and there during sports games.

Jones just needs to dial it back a bit. If I hear the word “garbage” one more time I’ll smash my phone, on a table, covered with pillows.

Giu I think is a great and while I agree with Johnny about 30% of the time it doesn’t matter because the guy is clearly the glue and the wheel that keeps car running and in place.

Guillaume have you tried holding R all the time basically to keep the camera behind you? I know you can swing the camera both right and left but that is not very good. Try to just keep it behind you with R so you’re basically running while holding down the button.

Then just center the camera to where you are looking at for quick camera turns.

Don’t try to fight the games outdated camera and controls. Instead just say ok so these are the limitations and this is what the game WANTS me to do so let me do it instead of fighting the camera and the controls.

If you take that approach then you’ll find the game much more enjoyable.

It’s a product of it’s time for sure and as such you have to treat it like it.

I personally welcome all feedback, positive or negative. We put RFN out there for public consumption so naturally people are going to have opinions good and bad, and have topics/features/hosts/guests they like and don't like.  Even non-constructive trolling usually has a grain of truth to it.
Right. Although I wonder how much of the distaste some of the people here are expressing rather rudely at some of us individually is just confirmation bias. One of us says one thing one person doesn't like and all of a sudden, that person is an asshole forever. Maybe try to be more impartial as a listener?

I record the podcast, I edit it, and I listen to it afterwards. James has a fairly different personnality from mine, and yet I honestly don't understand how he could get under your skins like that. Yes, bring up Ubisoft, Sega, Sonic or Metroid and you might hear from him, but it's usually one line in a two hour podcast. And in a lot of cases, like when we're discussing "Metroidvania" games during New Business, he's not saying anything at all. So I dunno. Sure, we can all try to not rely on the same jokes over and over again, in order to be a more entertaining, better podcast. But sometimes running jokes work, too, as long as they don't take over the show. I think we're doing fine.

Taking the opportunity to defend myself: in the last 20 episodes, I spoke about 7 2D platformers. Cloudberry Kingdom, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Wario Land 3, Chariot, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse, Xeodrifter, DK King of Swing. Of those, I'm not sure which ones I'd consider "generic", as they all have something unique going on. And while I know we all like to joke that I love platformers unconditionally, I also know that I was critical of all of these.

That's seven games since November. If that's too much for you: tough. This is a Nintendo podcast. You're gonna have to hear about some 2D platformers.

We record weekly, so there is some pressure to have something new to discuss every week. 2D platformers are usually short, easy to get into, plentiful on the eShop, often have couch co-op, and I like playing them so yeah, I'm gonna talk about them critically. I record this show for myself, and for people who actually like Nintendo games, after all. If others don't care for it, then I'm probably doing something right.

I personally love the podcast or else I wouldn’t be here and I like all of you as a group and I think you all have great chemistry. But when some try break free a bit from that group chemistry is when imo it becomes worse.

I could care less about james hating sonic or Metroid or this or that but his rude dismissive and loud personally can just be very off putting. I’m not the only one that feels this way either.

I’m listening to episode 103/104 right now and where is that dude!!! He was funny and great to listen to in that episode. Sure he was snarky before but now he’s extreme.

He’s like the Simpsons. He’s become an extreme parody of himself at this point.

Oh and I actually like the platformers talk. Besides the DK64 game I generally agree with your point of views and taste

I'm going to be honest. I've listened to RFN for probably 5  years and it was my favorite podcast during most of that run. But I have not listened to the last two episodes and don't plan to listen to any more. James Jones is the reason. I even sent the crew an email a couple months back letting them know I felt James was becoming a problem. Johnny responded and I appreciated that. They even made a quick reference at the beginning of the next show about not yelling at each other which I know was a result of my email.

When Greg left the show, the balance was thrown off because James assumed a more prominent role. If people enjoy listening to him make snarky comments throughout the show, or yelling at others as they try to explain something, then great. I don't. I think it comes off rude and makes it painful to the listener. I hate it because Johnny is probably my favorite Nintendo podcaster out there and I like that Gui is always trying new games, almost always Nintendo related. But James just kills it for me and makes me not want to listen. There are plenty of Nintendo podcasts out there that keep it positive (without the Nintendo worship) that I enjoy much more.

One more thing. I've listened to RFN shows in which James is fine to listen to. You listen to any show in which there is a guest host of someone not from NWR, but the gaming industry, and James is a different person, much more respectful. However it seems on most shows he's intent on playing the role of a troll. The rest of the crew is apparently fine with him being that way because it continues. It's their show so that's cool. It's not for me anymore.

Man you nailed it on the head. James jones is nails on a chalk board to me!!!! I've gone back and listen  to a lot of old episodes and he was fine before. Controlled and insightful. Greg really kept him in check. Now he's loud, rude, disrespectful and by far not funny. I mean he's funny 1 out of 20 times probably.

For instance on the last podcast I was so siked that my favorite podcast was reading my email for the first time. Then this bafoon kept interrupting the email. I mean I'm a new listener that's a huge fan and for me getting my emailed read is a big deal. So this idiot should realize that before being a jerk and interrupting and basically saying ok done moving on.

I get he's young and for his age he's played a lot of stuff and he's insightful but he acts like only things he likes are good and everything else is "garbage".

I don't know I'm honestly enjoying all the old episodes far far more. Two reasons. Greg and less jones.

this thread kinda warms my heart and it's not even because of the podcast attached to it. <3

I would like to take this time to say that there are plenty of games that I palyed vanilla back in the day that I would play emulated on any day of the week because I like the crispness higher resolution brings to the pixels, or because I like the rginomics of more modern controllers or such.

Seriously though, Kobe. You -HAVE- to go and listen to episode 106 and then 107 and tell us what you think. those are the finest moments of this podcast.

Ok I downloaded them. I'll listen to them on Monday at work. :  )
