Hey i hope I don't get killed for this but IGN does this thing on scoop that's pretty entertaining. 20 questions.

I wouldn't mind seeing the RFN crew rip that off and take suggestions from listeners.

Bit of both I guess. Like most of the "New to Season 5" stuff its still in flux. Greg literally threw it out during recording and we went with it. I'd guess we'll settle it among ourselves, so I'll be taking input from listeners. You can post it here or email it in. Music suggestions with good questions get bonus consideration...just saying.

In the final
Mario and luigi bowsers inside story

YouTube that song and behold! Such a great song I didn't want to even beat the final boss so I could keep lisening to it.

I'm glad you guys continued the podcast. It was great and a pleasure. Great job hosting.

Playing Double Dash now doesn’t compare with playing it when it came out.

Now it may seem barebones compared to recent games in the series but back then it was the 3rd title in the series and 2nd in 3D and with the added co op this game kept me and my friends playing for hours upon hours. Probably well over 100 hours for sure.

Then if you did Lan you could have 4 racers and 4 co op partners and man oh man tears from laughter followed.

When this game came out we were all mostly in our high teens to early 20’s either in high school or college so alone with Melee, M. Party and others these games were the stable of many multiplayers sessions.

Now most of us are older, full time jobs, kids, married, etc and playing the game just doesn’t have the same effect.

PS. IGN can shove their 7.9 right up the exhaust pipe.

I will say - James as new host is what really intrigues me.  James has played the role recently of topic derailer & coming up with oddity games to talk about, but he's certainly more than capable of being a point of knowledge on business, & I find him to be the biggest authority on that for the podcast.

Thanks to Greg too for being willing to enter the fray, it definitely softens the blow a little to know that he's saddling-up again, and I know it was a big commitment for him when he decided to leave.

Since i'm a new listener I missed the Greg years but when I went back to listen to all the old shows i became a HUGE fan of his work.

I can listen to the man talk Nintendo all day and I can't wait to hear what he has to say every week. This is no knock on Johnny and in a perfect world I would have him on the show as well but Greg coming back is what helps this transition big time.

I'm a big fan of Gui as well but he is more like a really good color commentator in a sports broadcast than the play by play man.

Greg is freaking Chick Hearns man.

I discovered this post cast about 2 years ago and only recently after going back and listening to almost all of the podcast have I started posting here. I’m incredibly sad to see Johnny leave and even though I didn’t agree with him a lot of times I always respected his opinion and his smooth way of hosting.

I could almost see this coming though. It felt very similar to how Matt from IGN started to lose his passion and interest for Nintendo and you couldn’t hear the excitement anymore.

Is like a veteran player losing interest in a bad season in the NBA. I wish you luck Johnny from a relatively new listener.

With that said having Greg back is incredible! I haven’t had many chances to listen to him except going back to all the old episodes but those were out of context because of them being outdated.

James while my ears ring from shouts every once in a while I respect your passion and commitment and I know you’ll do an amazing job. I’ll be interesting to see how someone to tries to derail the train at times now try to keep it in its tracks as host. Lol.

Been a listener for almost two years now, just listened to this episode this morning.
Thought I would just pop in and say I love the podcast and look forward to it every week. Good job on another great episode.

Stick with Hyrule Warriors though! It gets pretty addictive after you've sunk some time into it. The DLC is amazing too, I'd argue Young Link is the most fun character in the game, it changes your entire mindset as you're pretty much never going to want to use your super move and instead convert your gauge into magic to turn into Fierce Diety. I'm also wondering if you have invested any time leveling up your characters through the item "crafting," it makes the game infinitely more enjoyable once you've put the time into unlocking all the combos for your character.

I completely agree with you. Though it does bother me that they talk about this game in a demeaning way just because it isn't a regular Zelda game.

Even James who likes it can't say he likes it without giving the disclaimer about how stupid it is and how it's just pure stupidity. Man if you like the game don't apologize for it.

It's a great fun game and severely underrated IMO. I loved the hell out of it and all the extra content has given the game tons of legs.

Going back to get high scores and collect the spiders is also a lot of fun. I hope we get another game in the series.

So I just listened to this episode and what the hell!!! New Super Mario Wii hard!!???

I guess gaming is a diminishing skill since first he had trouble with Mario 3 and then New Mario Wii. Gesh.

This old episode had me rolling. Im having fun going back and listening to the old ones. Though sad that when I post is years later after it happened.

I think the bosses are easily the worst part of Hyrule Warriors, they take FOREVER to kill and usually involve just holding the block button until they show their weak points, then rinse and repeat 4 times over. The rest of the game though is great.

I had trouble with them at the start because the game was very confusing and I didn't know what to do and you aren't leveled up so it took forever to beat them but at the same time all your bases are falling.

That's why it was hard. Once you level up and understand how to use strategy and how to attack a map and what to do the bosses become a lot easier and very fun.

I'm glad you finally tried Hyrule Warriors john and this may sound weird but you should keep playing the game and it will just click with you.

I played the game for about 6-7 hours and it was ok but I wasn't having a lot of fun with it. The combat seemed shallow, the game repetitive and confusing and i was getting my tail kicked by some bosses and overwhelmed with stopping them and the constant treat of my base being attacked.

Then it all came together! I started to know what the game was asking of me and what I had to do to be successful. My characters started to level up and unlock more abilities and become stronger. I started to mess with the weapon fusion system and I was getting better rankings in previous maps.

I started to get into the story and the characters and well the game just clicked. It turned out to be one of my favorite games that year.

Almost like getting an CD and you listen to it a few times and don't think much of it then you listen more to it and it all of a sudden becomes one of your favorite CD's.

So i would say keep playing and invest some decent time in it and inside lies a very well made and worthy game.

Remember glass half full guys!!!

I would like to commend James on an amazing job with the pod cast he did. They were by far the most enjoyable parts of E3. When I saw the Nintendo direct I thought man James is going to scream and tear this apart but he was actually really fair, critical but also positive and just a great all around host. I tip my hat to you sir and appreciate the time and effort. I enjoyed the hell out of these.

Looking back at the direct (ive seen it 3 times now) I don’t feel it was awful. Yes it could have used a big game in there and the presentation was off but the actual puppets was super charming and had me smiling every time and the games themselves I want and I’m glad are 2015.

When you think about it rather have these games in 2015 than them dropping bombs after bombs and winning E3 but all the games be 2016-2017 games ala Sony.

So basically my friend (huge sony fan) game me crap for sony winning E3 and Nintendo’s sucking but guess whos going to be playing games this year and who isn’t?

That’s the way I see it.

Music is amazing.

I finally used the +heart on the last boss - he is a real bastard.

Yeah it took me about 10 tried to beat him but it was double frustrating because I had my wife sitting behind me waiting for the TV. Then I had my two kids (1 and 3 year old) climing on top of me and say daddy daddy daddy daddy daddy daddy daddy daddy.

Ugh.

But with all said the boss I think it’s fair because with every try I got better and learned the pattern more and more until I put it all together in one shot and beat the damn bastard.

Yeah power ups are essential but not necessary if you have the patience to learn the patterns perfectly.

I’ve only listened to the start and again another highly enjoyable podcast.

I was surprised that James liked DK for some reason it seems like a game he would not like.

I think I agree with Johnny that you should use your coins and not really feel bad about it.

I bought a crap load of lives and used the extra harts and invincibility potions on bosses.

I think the game is balanced where if someone wants an ultra-challenge they can skip the items but using them I feel is totally fine.

I also thought the bosses were freaking great!!! I mean yeah I died like 15 times in the last boss and it was double frustrating cause I had my two kids jumping on me and any mistake or break in concentration meant I died but I never thought it was unfair.

I always knew that I could do better and I had to keep trying. I can respect that even while getting my ass kicked.

Oh and James I’m surprised you didn’t mention the music which is brilliant.

I predict Hyrule Warriors will be ported to the 3DS!!!

Kidding aside Nintendo predictions are so hard because they do stuff like that! Who could have predicted that?

I predict New Smash DLC in the way of characters
I predict a new Mario game more in the vein of 64/sunshine/galaxy.
I predict Metroid. Johnny this looks like the year.

Here is my left field prediction. Kobe Bryant NBA Courtside 3! Retired Edition

Eh he who got that?

No seriously my big swing for the fences prediction is Platinum is making Starfox Wii U.

It will run at 60 frames, make no sense at all story wise and be freaking crazy action wise and they will make it their own ala Sega with F Zero.

I think the pointer messing up in sunlight left a bad taste and the opening a chest and up able to skip mini cutscene.

The game was great and I loved so much about it and I didn't mind the slow start or the waggle or even the length and I think the graphics are still gorgeous taken as a whole but man the pointer would just screw you.

In Skyward the pointer was even worse because it was motion based. Why can other games get pointer perfect and not Nintendo. lol. That Zelda team needed classes on pointer controls.

I again have to defend Splatoon a little here.

A lot of reviews have focused on the lack of content but I would argue that the content is in line with other games and more and more content will get added starting today I believe.
If you buy this game and don’t plan to play the online then I could see the argument being made for sure

The game launched with five maps and literally one game mode. We're at six and two now. There are a fair number of weapons, but even in that sense they artificially inflate the number by having duplicate primary weapons with different skins and subs/specials (which they couldn't get away with if the game had custom loadouts). Any way you slice it, that's a lack of content and most definitely not in line with other games (at least not good ones).

And I wouldn't say a lot of reviews have focused on the lack of content. The majority of reviews have focused on how fun the game is, which is why it's generally getting 8/10s. They point out the lack of content, which is entirely fair, but ultimately conclude that the game is really good and really fun in spite of this (which I agree with). I've already put ~15 hours into the online multiplayer myself, so it's not as I'm not having a lot of fun, but that doesn't change the facts. These flaws don't hold the game back from being good, but that doesn't mean they're not there.

You make fair points and yes there is no denying that compared to other shooters it does lack content but then at the same time you dumped 15 hours in the game already. That’s more than most modern games.

I guess the lack of content in a sense doesn’t bother me because I’ve already poured in more time in the game than most other games.

Agreed. It doesn't bother me either and I wouldn't be surprised if I'm approaching 100+ hours in the online multiplayer by the time summer is over. I just think that if someone wants to bring that up as a criticism, it's a fair point. I wouldn't agree with them if they said it was a bad game solely because of that, but at the same time I can see it being an issue for someone who likes but doesn't love the core gameplay. You really have to buy into the game to get past the issue and luckily it seems like most people have.

Yeah and you know what I agree with you.

I think at times I get defensive because other companies cram as much as possible into some games and half of that works or isn’t even very good.

Assassins creed can last you 100 hours but the games have bugs, half-baked ideas and unpolished gameplay in some areas.

Nintendo’s way is more like hey you know what we are going to polish the hell out of the gameplay and focus on that and then add content to it. If we don’t have enough time to add tons of content well that’s ok because the core gameplay and game is polished to a shine.

None of that Halo or GTA where the games didn’t even work online for all their content it was a moot point. I hear Halo STILL doesn’t work right after 100000000 patches. How about Skyrim? A game that many would argue didn’t even run in a playable form  on the PS3.

So I actually applaud Nintendo for doing what’s right should get applauded.

PS. Anyone want to add me in splatoon. Kobeskillz

Also lets be fair here most shooters have 15+ levels and a crap load of weapons. The same 4 levels keep rotating and everyone pretty much uses the same weapons.

So I like Nintendo’s approach somewhat because you learn and play every level then they drop more levels. Yes it’s a bit hand holding but it also makes you learn the levels and try out all the guns.

Let’s not forget that it’s a new franchise as well and the focus was on gameplay vs content which is absolutely the correct way to go. The sequels will surely include much more content and features. Think of Pikmin 1 compared to the others.

Its a bit like audio "black face" don't you think? Its just bad taste and really dumb. Maybe its funny if your 12 years old. Don't most of these guys on the podcast have college degrees? Could have fooled me.

I think that’s a bit much. I think it would be a fun segment and there is nothing racist about it.

I’m not sure what college degrees have anything to do with it as well. I mean you’re posting in a thread for a podcast about Nintendo and a game that came out in 06 and you decided to pick on them for the rap?

It’s all in good fun and college degrees have nothing to do with having fun and joking around. Let’s get off our high horses here.

I agree that kid Icarus had great voice acting. The conversations between him and the princess were very entertaining.

Also regarding Zelda getting a ten then later thinking differently I've noticed that about a lot of zeldas. Ign game skyward sword a 10 and I've heard the ign crew say later that they wouldn't have given it a ten. For some reason after some time people change their opinion.

I again have to defend Splatoon a little here.

A lot of reviews have focused on the lack of content but I would argue that the content is in line with other games and more and more content will get added starting today I believe.

I finished Batman city, Transformers and Bioshock Infinity lately and those games were all about 6-10 hours long with some online and DLC to pad it out.

Splatoon single player and challenges are around that long and I’ve already put in a good 10+ hours in the multiplayer alone with more content added FREE later.

Sooo while the game may seem spares it’s really not far off from other games that are critically acclaimed and don’t get citizen for their lack of content.

If you buy this game and don’t plan to play the online then I could see the argument being made for sure

I think my Smash point is inarguable. If, as you say, Smash didn't need the content it still doesn't have in order to be "complete" why did they market the game with that content, knowing it wouldn't be there at launch?

I think it’s a matter of opinion with smash really and IMO the fact that they said he look here’s a ton more content coming soon doesn’t bother me at all.

It’s not paid content. In fact the paid content got announced much later. I didn’t get the game and think man it’s incomplete because im really missing that miiverse stage. I just did not have a problem with it at all and the fact that a game I’ve poured in arlready 80 hours is getting free additional content coming is even better to me.

I honestly think that complaining about announcing that content early is just nitpicking to the extreme on a game exploding with content. Really I do.

You have a stronger case with Platoon and for now I’ll drop this because the game isn’t even out so it’s hard for us to even judge it on previews especially since there could potentially be more to the game than what we all know. I’ve been hearing great things about the single player and you guys compared it to Titanfal which hopefully looks not to be the case.

You can say "Well Smash had so much content" at launch, and be correct. HOWEVER if that were the case I'd have been happier for them NOT to mention the content they planned to add at a later date prior to the launch of the game. Don't muddy the water. Still waiting on that Miiverse level, Sakurai...

Splatoon doesn't seem to have that defense. Anyone who would dare tell me that Splatoon will launch with a comparable amount of content to Smash 4 should be disregarded as a lunatic. Neither is acceptable to me, I have always stated that a game launch should be in as near a perfect state as possible. Patching solutions are not forever and people who buy the game deserve to get it in as good a state as possible out of the box. Just because Nintendo no longer seems to subscribe to this does not mean I'm going to be inconsistent on the point. Splatoon should not be launching in the state that it is. I rightly rap Nintendo for doing so.

Disagree with smash. Game has so much content them saying off the bat hey we are adding tons of free content later on is just gravy to me. Agree to disagree here.

With splatoon while it doesn't bother me like it does others I see your argument and think is a fair one.
