Now up to +2 for finishing Tell Me Why.

It's a story game so the less the said the better. This is a smaller shorter affair, so if you're new I would recommend starting with the Life is Strange series. These kind are games are incredibly fun in co-op pass the controller style. The stories are so engaging you can't help discussing every little choice, sharing theories and predictions.

I have brought shame upon myself by also missing this thread. In.

Bought a couple of vouchers on the eShop for Bravely Default 2 and TBD, so that sets me back to 0 points.

However +1 point for finishing Yakuza 3 Remastered. I really enjoyed this. I'm playing the series in order and I would say this is my favourite game since Yakuza Zero, which is one of the best games of all time.

3 as a remastered PS3 game managed to exceed my expectations. Whereas 1 & 2 which were ground-up remakes, fell below expectations having been blown away with Zero. The game introduces some quirky new features, tons of side quests and the main story feels like the next big step in Kiryu's journey.

My main complaint would be all the hostess dating, which are required to finish all the substories. There's decent writing and some chuckle worthy jokes but why is there so much of it? Thousands and thousands of words, essentially a visual novel worth of text in this minigame. 84 trips to the hostess club and millions of yen later, I finally completed all the substories. Weirdly addictive but not very satisfying.

TalkBack / Re: The Argument Against General Directs
« on: February 19, 2021, 02:08:50 PM »
It's an interesting point. Expectations have ballooned to a point where it's impossible for directs to meet them. So will always be disappointing to a segment of the audience, because a direct is all things to all people, until the day rolls around and you don't get what you want.

I love the hype cycle, even though I know deep down I know that it's unlikely to meet that level of hype. Directs are vestiges of hope. Whereas mini directs are pleasant surprises.

Love this idea, the wicked temptations of new games are a strong and powerful force.

I don't think I'm going to get the 6 pointer, but breaking even seems like a reasonable goal. Count me in.

I think a Fire Emblem Echoes is a good bet, since Intelligent Systems have probably been working on something FE related.

For Smash I'm really feeling Astral Chain. I feel like the moveset writes itself.

BOTW 2 I'm going to say is a no show, they can probably fill the 50 minutes without it.

Kudos for keeping the thread updated. I stand by everything and await being proven correct.

That email was unfair, it's a 700 strong weekly podcast that focuses on games, not news coverage. I imagine it's quite difficult to come up with something different to talk about each week. Glass houses and all, the emailer better have the receipts for their collection of 700-ish Nintendo games.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What will Nintendo release in 2021?
« on: January 01, 2021, 01:12:09 PM »
Here we go

  • A 2D Metroid is absolutely coming out this year from Mercury Steam, and I will absolutely ignore it because I'm not really a Metroidvania guy.
  • Doshin the Giant will be the WHAT?! character in the 2nd fighter pass.
  • That Splatoon side scroller will finally emerge.
  • A 3D Kirby game will finally release and have controversial elements.
  • Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity, surprisingly does not have any DLC.
  • A sequel to everyone's favourite recent sonic game, sonic forces 2 will be announced. You will also be allowed to port over your terrible original character.
  • The Switch operating system will gain one new theme in 2021.
  • Breath of the Wild 2 will receive a 89 metacritic
  • Tatsu, from Xenoblade X, will appear in an official Nintendo Direct, a Direct Mini will not count.
  • The credits sequence for No More Heroes 3 will be over 17 minutes in length.

Nintendo Gaming / Oh you like video games? Name every game you beat in 2020

Insert image of Donkey Kong aiming a gun square at your face. He's got that grin on his face, you know the one. Definition of "beat" is up to your own personal interpretation.

I definitely played more titles this year but the playtime was probably around the same, because of the types of games I gravitated towards this year (More adventure games less RPGs).

Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
Yakuza Kiwami 2

My personal top recommendations have got to go to Xenoblade Chronicles DE, Life is Strange and Deadly Premonition 1.

Xenoblade takes a somewhat clunky masterpiece and smoothes down every single one of those rough edges with sandpaper. It's a joy to play and quality of life improvements fo tracking quests, trading and faster loading times, make older versions seem unplayable in retrospect. Glorious new music, HD visuals and new story content that adds to the Xenoblade canon without feeling too out of place. It was so easy to keep playing and playing that I did every quest and killed every secret boss except the last.

Life is Strange is such a beautiful game. The gameplay mechanics and the story are like Ying and Yang, you can't have one without the other. The story is so effective and heartbreaking because of the format, not in spite of it. The characters, the music, it all left a profound impression on me, there were tears, laughs and gasps in shock. What about Before the Storm you ask? Well I'm happy to report that this is also fantastic. It's a smaller, less grand story but it plays to it's own strengths. There's some really playful dialogue opportunities in Before the Storm that I feel surpass the original, despite being the little sister of the duology.

Deadly Premonition 1 is the work of an auteur. Trust me, this game has soul and a vision. It's a game I thought about for weeks and weeks after the fact. It has so many cool details you will only realise at the end, or will only realise after looking it up on YouTube. Deadly Premonition Archives has some great videos chronicling the timeline and all the easter eggs, they make a compelling argument for it being the greatest game of all time. Even the more Resident Evil style action segments are actually quite fun. It's not deep mechanically but simple is good, Agent York smashing a zombie with a pipe is satisfying every time. It's greatness is what makes Deadly Premonition 2 so disappointing. The sequel is undercooked like raw chicken. Don't get me wrong it has some hilarious moments that the series does so well. But they only paper over back steps in the combat, side quests, narrative, music and world design. Let's not even talk about the technical performance.

When I was younger, my dad insisted I sit down and watch Time Bandits on VHS with him. As some sort of rite of passage. So I remember it fondly.

Most of the character descriptions could match anything, but G stood out in particular as something fairly distinctive. I then made sure it matched with the other characters like H.

Moving Out is really hard. We beat Overcooked 1 & 2 with basically all 3 stars, but never got a single gold medal in Moving Out. We managed to reach the credits and it's a decent game, but a long way off being as engaging or addictive as Overcooked.

Khushrenada I salute your dedication to statistics and the Safe Words scoring system.

I must also take this opportunity at the end of the game, to commend one of the Wii U's best games, Super Mario 3D World. This game inspired many spin offs such as Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for Nintendo Wii U, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for Nintendo 3DS, Captain Toad Treasure Tracker for Nintendo Switch, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure for PlayStation 5.

I completed the game for the first time today. I got it on Wii U a couple years ago and I've played the odd level here and there ever since.

There are some things I really like about it. The stars mostly feel unique and once you get one you have the urge to jump back in to get another you might have seen. The hints on the level name is a genius way for guiding you towards the next star. The cap is a fun addition despite feeling a bit erratic.

The game can be addictive but I also found it quite difficult. Grabbing onto ledges hurt me more than it has helped me, though I imagine back in the day it was a really cool piece of programming. Some more check points would be nice and wind can be absolutely infuriating, looking at you Mr Snowman!

Falling off the level is such a huge set back. You lose all your coins, red coins and all progress in terms of platforming. Had the game been easier I might be tempted to get 100%, but some aspects are just too frustrating for someone used to modern day Mario.

I got my 70 stars and went straight for the final boss. The final cutscene actually has voice acting which surprised me. Total playtime 21 hours
