Nintendo Gaming / Official Demo Disc Talk
« on: June 03, 2003, 08:44:52 AM »
F zero looked pretty sweet.  But you would think they could'ne got a guy who knew how to play the game for the movie.  The guy is like crashing into every wall.

That would be sweet, and totally what they should have done.

Nintendo Gaming / nintendo's next system
« on: June 03, 2003, 07:30:23 AM »
Personnally I like the fact that Nintendo did not put DVD capability on the system, and gave us a choice about what kind of modem we wanted.

If Nintendo is going to go the route of Hardcore gaming machine, why o why do they not market themselves that way?  THe hardcore gaming machine idea could work with effective advertisement.  I think that is a harder way to go though, and only appeals to a niche market.

Features is all the mass market understands.  I know a couple of people who simply bought PS2 because it had a DVD player, these people are not serious gamers (read uninformed).  All they saw was two machines that play games that look kinda the same, but the PS2 played DVD and they went with that.

General Gaming / Dolby Digital or DTS

I think DTS sounds a bit fuller.  I heard also that DTS is less compressed than Dolby digital so that might be why it sounds better.

General Gaming / Some T.V. purchasing questions
« on: June 03, 2003, 05:16:44 AM »
Looks like a pretty decent TV.  I just purchased a 27"toshiba from future shop with S-video and Component inputs.  If you are just using your TV for the Cube defintly get the component cables.  I can switch pretty quickly from my RCA inputs to my component input and the difference is night and day.  The component picture is 10 times brighter, and super crisp.  I can see small details that I could not pick out when using the RCA connector.  The RCA input is blurry compared to the component.

Just make sure you order your cables from Nintendo Canada, there is a 1800 number on nintendos website that you call.  I ordered mine from Lik sang and it cost me twice as much and took twice as long to get here then my friends who ordered from Nintendo.  Yes I am an idiot.

Nintendo Gaming / nintendo's next system
« on: June 03, 2003, 04:37:59 AM »
You would totally want the same games to be able to play on either system, sorry if I was'nt clear.

It would be comparable to the car market, where you can buy an entry level model for cheap, or go all out and get the delux model.

Another interesting idea would be to give the consumer the ability to upgrade the system feature list by buying different modules.   Want dvd playpack?  Buy the DVD adapter.  Want LAN buy the adapter.  This way Nintendo can keep the initial cost of the system down, which nintendo likes to do, and still provide the same feature list as its competitors.  You would have to be carfull not to alienate the consumers this way, they might just say why do I have to buy everything seperate when this one has everything included in one package.  Nintendo would just have to price it right thats all.

The main thing is that Nintendo has to have the same capabilities as the Box and the PS3 so that there are no excuses not to buy the cube, like there are now; as trivial as those excuses are.  The mass market is like a bunch of monkeys you got to give them the bannanas to make them happy even if they are'nt ripe and covered in pooh.

Nintendo Gaming / nintendo's next system
« on: June 02, 2003, 08:41:25 AM »
Nintendos main problem right now is image, everyone sees it as a kiddie system.  The only way I can see Nintendo conteracting this is to embrace it in a way, by releasing two different systems.

The first system has to have all the bells and whistles of their competitors in order to compete for mass market dollars.  If the graphics are going to be the same on the next gen systems then you don't want to lose customers on a short feature list, even if your games are better.   And you must price the system the same or even hight than the competition, this is the adult system and adults will pay more if they feel they are getting the best.

The second system they realese will be a full blown kiddie system.  It will have exactly the same graphics and power as the adult system, but any extra features will be upgradable, using plug in adapters like the current cube.  This one you release with all the cute colors.  And you sell this one at a significantly lower price so parents can buy them for there kids.

With this strategy you are competing for 3 different markets at the same time.  The older adult market, the kid market which Nintendo has a firm grasp on, and the broke asses like me who just want a pure gaming system and could care less about having a DVD player or not.

Think about it.

Nintendo Gaming / Zellers has demo disc
« on: May 31, 2003, 04:35:56 AM »
To all my Canadian peoples, I found the demo disc at a Zellers in Calgary.  It was just sitting there in the display case.  Cost me 14.95.  I got mine from Market mall Zellers and a friend of mine got one from the sunridge location.

Zellers knows nothing, I guess the big 'Not for Resale' does'nt mean a thing to them.  Thats super sweet for me though thanks Zellers and your glorious ignorance.

On a side note our EBgames in Calgary had some Nintendo representatives show up at their store and told them to stop selling the demo disc.  I can picture CIA like characters in black suits going around telling people to ceast and desist.  Don't mess with Nintedo, you might get shot.

Good Luck

Maybe I missed something but how do I get the demo disk for the GC?  Do I have to buy a new GC, or can I order it?

What's the deal?

Nintendo Gaming / ATI showing off graphics.
« on: May 27, 2003, 08:44:57 AM »
I think it is cool that Half Life 2 was showcased using ATI's new video card.  And super cool that it had the best graphics at E3.  Can't wait to see what ATI does for Nintendo's next gen.  Nintendo has a good partner in ATI, they know their graphics.

« on: May 26, 2003, 12:20:45 PM »
Just reading IGN best of E3 list and I noticed they gave Turismo best graphics for the PS2 and a honourable metion overall.  I was wondering if this was a playable demo or not?  It does not come out untill 2004.  Also in the screen shots I noticed no more than 4 cars on the screen at once, but the graphics look really good.  I was just wondering how the Ps2 could pull something like that off with such a low graphic power consol?  What do you guys think?

« on: May 22, 2003, 09:37:26 AM »
You will need a RCA to mini RCA convertor, you can pick one up at Radio Shack.  Then plug your adapter into the green analog input in the back of your system.

I noticed that this system does not support Dolby PL II.  If that is indeed the case than you will not be able to experience the true surround that the GC is capable of.

But this still sounds like a good system, enjoy!

General Gaming / Possible fan change for GC
« on: May 22, 2003, 06:03:33 AM »
I was thinking of doing it, but I could not find any led fans the right size.  If you manage to find some let me know.

I think the GC takes 60mm and all I could find is 80mm led fans.

General Gaming / PlayStation Portable, a serious contender to GBA?
« on: May 16, 2003, 09:49:33 AM »
I like how Sony just throws this press release out there, and does not back it up with any sort of hardware.  Not even a picture of the thing.  I am surprised that they did'nt say this thing would produce holgraphic pictures and shoot laser beams at annoying party guests.  I think this is just a Sony ploy to steal some thunder for itself during E3.

I would have to agree with most posts here about the issues for a succesfull launch of this product.

1.  Price point, I think the max you could charge for this thing is $200.  Better systems than the GBA have come out in the past but the GBA out priced them.

2.  Battery life.  Spinning disk, 3D chip, backlight display, big display, all of these things add up to shorten play time.

3.  Sony's position on copyright material.  Think this thing will be able to play all the MP3  out there?  Or any movie ever produced?  Doubtfull, Sony's minidisk and MP3 players only support certified music <--read music you directly paid for.  And as for video, this system seems to have 2 options, either on the disc or on the memory stick.  For movies the PP would have to use the disk I would think, and how many movies do you know are printed on mini DVD?  Probably only movies that Sony has rights too.

I think Sony has a lot of issues to deal with to make this any sort of success, and it sounds to me like this is some kind of dream system some Sony exec. came up with to steal some thunder from Nintendos and Xbox E3.

Yo!

I just bought them and they are as good as all the reviews have said.  Supposedly they were designed to be computer speakers but I am using them as a poor man's home theater.  And they work awesome to say the least.

But, the best part is how much fun they are to use with my GameCube, utter sweetness.  It really is the definition of imersive gameplay, sound makes a huge difference.

The only bad thing that I can say about them is that they are too loud, with too much bass; I live in an apartment, eviction could be coming soon.

Go get em tiger.

I don't think you could go wrong with the Logitechs Z-680.  I am going definitly pick some up when I get the casharoonie, which should be soon as they are super inexpensive, probably the least expensive way to get surround sound on the GC.

Check out these reviews, all glowing:

I think the math is a little wrong on this one:

28% PS2 + 27% X-Box +23% PC = 78%

22% for Gamecube sounds a bit more reasonable.

And the only reason Xbox got 27% is because Splinter Cell was released at christmas and is one of the few good games the system has.
