Nintendo Gaming / Re: How to solve Nintendos 3rd party problem...
« on: August 28, 2013, 12:10:52 PM »
I was thinking about this today in my computer science class and I think I might have discovered the root of Nintendo's deeper issue that is plaguing them as a whole. I won't get too deep into this as I don't have a lot of time before my next class but I wanted to put this out there for others to consider. I think from a mainstream perspective that Nintendo's problems stem from them being a toy company first. I think to them video games are still just toys, sure they make the best toys around no arguments there. But video games have evolved to be so much more than just toys, they are entertainment, they are a medium for great storytelling, they are artistic expressions, and yes they are games too. I think that Nintendo's philosophy of game play first is dated, it is a solid philosophy and what makes them stand out but I think they do need to take a more modern approach if they want to stay relevant.

One of the reasons people often claim they don't like Nintendo games anymore is they as gamers have grown up and they view Nintendo games as kiddie, and then Nintendo gamers respond negatively. But I realize now that they are right in their feelings but they are wrong in the way they are expressing their feelings. I think what the real problem is that Nintendo's games haven't really changed since we, or us as gamers, were kids and that is what they mean by kiddie. I don't think it inherently means just for kids but that what gamers are seeing is Nintendo games have not caught up with modern game making, they have not added that artistic and big budget entertainment look to their games that the rest of the industry is now doing. Sure Nintendo still does make great games, some of the best in the world nobody in their right mind could really argue with that and be taken seriously. But their are issues with the company and I think people tend to over state the obvious without really looking deeper at the issues that are holding the company back and I really think the issue is they still view themselves as a toy industry not an entertainment industry and most people tend to associate toys with kids and I think that is where the miscommunications are coming from and why Nintendo just doesn't get their message across is because they are hearing the wrong words and responding with the wrong attitudes it doesn't mean that their games are kids games per se, their games have universal appeal and they do have their games that are not for kids or aimed at just kids so that isn't really an issue but it is obvious that they do not take their games as seriously as anything other than toys. I think that is part of what makes discussing their issues so difficult is because it is hard to pin it on one issue.

Gamecube didn't fail because it was underpowered, it was not under powered. Gamecube did not fail because it had a lack of DVD or a really odd online model that was swept under the rug before it had a chance to take off. Gamecube failed because Nintendo was short sighted and yes they put a great emphasis on game play but they did so at the expense of the deeper experiences gamers were craving and that lead to gamers who were missing out on those experiences attacking Nintendo because they felt left out and not fully understanding what the problem was gamers lashed out with whatever immediately came to mind and latched on to that. I don't think Wii U's issues are exactly transferable to Gamecube if you look at it as a technological parallel but if you look at the philosophy it is the same, gamers are tired of even the experiences PS3 has to offer and they want more, deeper, richer gameplay, not just prettier graphics. Talking to people who are looking forward to the next gen most people say they are looking forward to bigger games, larger landscapes, more enemies on screen, more depth not better graphics but just bigger worlds. Nintendo was attacked for their downplay on graphics so this gen they tried to fix that problem and let's be real Wii U graphics do not suck they are pretty damn impressive. But the depth I think is what their games are lacking. No chasing around millions in stead of thousands of Pikmin is not the type of depth we are talking here, but more like  a game where the levels are larger in scope and there is more to explore and the worlds don't feel so artificial but more immersive.

Going back to replay Mario 64 the game feels like Mario is in a box with backgrounds painted on the sides. In Mario Sunshine it still felt like he was in a box but it was a larger box with smoother animations to mask the painted on backgrounds and really neat glossy paint effects to distract you from how clostraphobic it really was. I think that is also what is happening with Nintendo's other platformers and why gamers are growing tired of the New Mario franchise, it feels like they are just doing the same game with different levels and minor tweaks and gamers like the gameplay but they want more to their levels. Going from SMB to SMB3 was a big leap but looking back it really wasn't as big a leap as we remember it to be and SMW was huge when it was new and now feels like a tiny mini game that would be tacked on as a special feature of a real game.

I think that is why gamers keep asking for Zelda, Metroid, and Star Fox because those games are the closest games Nintendo has to having the level of depth modern gamers are begging for. It isn't so much the graphics that is no impressing people I think but since that is what they can articulate that is what they focus on instead of attempting to really figure it out. I have been giving this a lot of thought because like most people who grew up on Nintendo I want a Wii U, but I just can't talk myself into it until the games start to show up and not just rehashes of last gen games it needs to be new experiences and I think that is what Nintendo is failing to realize. It is like Mattel and Hasbro, both toy companies but one sticks to the tried and true and the other innovates and tries new things but keeps they old stuff and just retools it to meet the demands of the new markets where Mattel is like Nintendo they have their franchises that lay golden eggs and they don't need to innovate or think outside the box and Hasbro keeps the same franchises going but updates the **** out of them every few years and brings new stuff to the table all the time. Monopoly today is not the same as it was a decade ago, but Barbie's only real change is her wardrobe reflects modern tastes and thats about it. Transformers doesn't even look remotely familiar to the old timer but it retains the essence of the toy line. And that is what Nintendo is doing wrong, they are just dressing Mario up in modern clothes but not giving him new features like Hasbro with their toylines. Equating Mario to Barbie sounds odd at first but I think it really is a good analogy.

Well that is all the time for today, gotta get to my next class. Chew on that peeps and I will be checking back in latter.

You are not allowed to make false claims about any Sonic game doing any kind of sucking, it is a criminal offense punishable by being forced to play though LJN's entire NES catalog in one sitting.

I almost feel bad for Microsoft with all their bad press, the worse they come off looking the better Nintendo will look in comparison though. But really Office and Windows is the only MS product I care about and lately even those aren't what they used to be. But then again it's not all bad press.

80
I am confused isn't that like the point of the thread?

81
Ian's remarks are exactly why I drew that conclusion. The game was no different than any real Zelda game, **** people talk about a certain dungeon that is damn near impossible as the highlight of the series but when a game that doesn't star everyone's favorite elven hero suddenly it's a bad game? I beat it in less than a week and it took me twenty years to finally finish Zelda NES. My sister who was 17 at the time beat it no problem same with this eight year old girl she used to baby sit. The final boss was  a piece of cake it was so easy it should have been a crime.

Let's not evaluate it based on the controversy lets just look at the game, Donkey Kong Country, etc are notorious collect-a-thons but those are heralded as great games. Zelda games are revered due to their difficulty and if one is too easy it gets a bad rep. There were no other games at the time it was released that came anywhere near the level of graphical detail, depth, scope, and cinematics that game had. It was easily on par with Metroid Prime but because of the controversy people refuse to give it a fair shake. I call BS on it because not just the really great reviews but because those who do hate on it tend to admit to not finishing the game. Is it Zelda good, no by no means, personally I felt it was on par with if not better than Wind Waker but that is a bannable offense in the minds of some Nintendo fans.

Contra is almost unbeatable without cheating and that is regarded as one of the greatest games of all time, the difficulty of Star Fox Adventures is not in the controls which were a piece of cake once you mastered them, no different than Metroid Prime by the way which was just as complicated at times. I stand by my belief that it was the controversy and the Star Fox debacle being the root of this games hate nothing more. People tend to let their emotions get in the way of having a good time. Thankfully I skipped most of Rares games on the N64 and I wasn't a huge fan of Star Fox to begin with so I went in with an open mind and guess what, I enjoyed it tremendously. Those who admit to hating it also freely admit to either never beating it or bringing up the rare incident only providing further support to my claims. Even so it's all in the past and a newcomer who has no emotional ties to Rare or Star Fox should be advised to give it a play through and judge for themselves. But keeping in mind it is incredibly dated by todays standards, being it is over a decade old.

Well I began my most dreaded class today, Communications Law 414 our professor started the lecture of telling us this will be the hardest class of our undergrad career. But once I really get going I will be probably coming back to this thread as part of my research project gears up. So stay tune for more anti-piracy ranting.

83
School starts tomorrow depending on how rough this semester goes I might be away for a while. But I will be keeping an eye on the Wii U this holiday to see if things improve. So if I don't post for a while that is why. But I will probably be back sooner or latter this place would be pretty dull without me.

I guess Lost girl did last more than one season but stupid Netflix only has a few episodes so maybe I will wait till they get more and give it a second chance.

Nah, knowing Nintendo it was nothing more than protecting their IP to prevent anyone else making money off it. A new game would be pretty cool but the reality is I doubt Nintendo wants to have anything to do with it. Maybe with Iwata coming to NOA things might change though so who knows I guess anything is possible.

86
Lucariofan99, I think you are too young to appreciate this game. It is not a new game it is a re-release of an old awesome Arcade hit from back in the day. D&D is a thousand times better than WoW anyday. In fact D&D is what all other fantasy games are ripping off.

Mutant League Football was just one of the many things that made Sega so great, they were not afraid to take chances and they challenged third parties to keep up. If you want to say one thing about Sega as a company at least they had the balls to try new things.

I don't see how a spiritual successor to what amounts to a forgotten game that maintains a cult follow mostly because it was released on the wrong system and was doomed to fall short of sales projections is going to do much for the Wii U. The same people who did not run out and buy a Gamecube to not play the first game are not going to go out and buy a Wii U to not play this same game. It's just like people expecting Pikmin to suddenly matter. It was a fine game in it's time but it was not a system seller than and it wasn't going to be now.

This game wouldn't even sell to the core crowd who owns a Wii U because most of those gamers, the ones who had the Gamecube and bought ET, haven't gotten a Wii U yet and this isn't the game to push anyone over the fence. It might help but on it's own nope. And after the failure of the first why in earth would Nintendo ever want to fund a sequel spiritual or otherwise?

Yeah I guess it can be like that, which I do concede most people disagree with my view which is why I posted it as a guilty pleasure.

For what it's worth I openly admit to being a Sega fan so I tend to be biased when it comes to them.

91
That is part of the problem hence why I said it hasn't aged well but when it was new it was a highly rated game and very well respected. Of course if you played it four years latter then chances are you had been exposed to superior games by then but in the early days of Gamecube it was one of the better games around.Even this sites own review states the same, it was a good game for its time but rated low for lastability/replay value. http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/3959 which further backs up what my point was, at the time it was heralded. The hate came latter. It is no different than Sega, at their peek they were a well respected company and the Genesis out sold the SNES up until Sega abandoned it and Nintendo took the lead, but history has been rewritten to make it look like Sega was always a damn joke and people tend to forget how awesome they were at one time.

To clarify I am not saying the game *is* a masterpeice but pointing out that it was at one time considered a great game. If one can keep that in mind and enjoy it for what it is they might be able to like it. But it does have flaws that by today's standards are hard to over look and the ending did ruin the rest of the game. That was my biggest complaint.

I guess it is no different than Super Mario Bros. 2 or Zelda 2, different is not always bad.

I got TJ&E 2 and Sonic 2 for my birthday and those were the first two games I got. But my sisters and all my friends also agreed with me it was a lot of fun. I had one friend who had the first game and I would go to his house and play it because I liked the one I had so I expected it to be as good and it was this awkward and weird game that just was the slowest thing ever on a system that prided itself on lightning fast game play.

Mario Sunshine is not even a Mario game and yet people love that game so no I don't think that matters, gameplay evolves. Why I liked the second one was because it was so colorful and the humor was just right up my alley. I liked the story, the characters, for a platformer it had a really unique combat system instead of popping enemies on the head you trapped them in jars, the aliens were super funny, the funk powers were all useful and there are parts where you really have to plan your fun moves just right to get through. The music is top notch and the mini games are better than the ones on the first game too.

I can understand why those who played the first enjoy it, it was a unique experience but I think they let that blind them to how great the sequel is because they just can't accept change.

94
I think you are remembering wrong dude, all the reviews of the game were excellent when it was released, it didn't start getting hate until after Rare started releasing games for Xbox. It even holds an 82 on Metacritic, far from mediocre. In fact it got mostly 9 and 10's during it's initial release. All of the negative reviews are after the fact. At the time the major complaint was the ending, some felt it ruined the whole game, and they never forgave it. That was magnified by the other stuff but it was hailed as a great game when it was new.

I was at Target school shopping and I had to pick up two more PS3 games, they were God of War Saga and Ratchet and Clank Collection. I played the first few zones of Sonic Generations, I gotta say that is the best Sonic gaming on a console I have played in years. It plays like Sega really put some effort into that game.

96
Star Fox Adventures hate is undeserved. It mostly stems from sour grapes that Rare left Nintendo nothing more. When it was new people loved it, then the Rare thing happened and suddenly the game sucked, then people tried to go back and say all Rare games sucked and were over hyped.

Star Fox Adventures is a really great game don't listen to the haters. The ONLY complaint I had was the ending, which at the time was the prevailing complaint but then like I said the Rare **** happened and suddenly it was a terrible game. Is it worth playing now, depend, it is an early GameCube game so it hasn't aged that well, the graphics are okay for what they were trying to do but the game really looks dated. The gameplay is mostly alright, the shooter levels do feel tacked on but that shouldn't take away from an other wise great game. It does have a pretty engaging story, complex puzzle solving, and some intense boss fights. Where it really fails is the voice acting can be really awful at times, the story falls apart at the end and the shooter levels really should have been removed.

I think if it had stayed true to just being Dinosaur Island and left Fox and company out, or Rare would have never left Nintendo, people would hail it as a classic.

As for Crystalis, that game is a mess. It starts out great, then it falls apart quickly. It's not terrible but you have to really want to make progress or else you just end up giving up. That is true for a lot of those types of Nintendo NES games though.

Neutopia is a decent Zelda clone but it is on a system hardly anyone even knows about let alone has. I think it was on Virtual Console but I am not sure.

it isn't internal it is a USB drive. I am a computer science major so I am sure I can get it to work. I read up on it before buying so I am sure I will be fine.

It was a 12 GB model and because it was the cheapest they had. Also I have a full 1.5 TB hard drive I will be adding to it if I need but as for GTA first that game isn't for me second I buy retail so the drive is only for game saves and PSN games for me. It was the cheapest in town I checked every store it was only $199 which was my limit.

On the subject of PSN games, I picked up Mega Man 9 and 10 bundle, Final Fantasy 7 PSClassic, Sonic Adventure, and Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD, and Castlevania Symphony of the Night PS Classic. All in all I am satisfied with my purchase. I still have some money left over so I am still contemplating a hand held but I have to look at the iOS App Store first.

Affleck isn't a terrible actor, I really didn't hate him in Chasing Amy but that was really about it. I guess he is older now so maybe it will not be so bad. Except there is that, isn't he too old for this part?

I have a feeling though this game would really only appeal to people who remember the original or who have seen the show. Because if I hadn't been in love with the show I never would have played the original.
