5k dimensions on moon? Means the thing would have to be a LOT heavier than earth to generate the amount of gravity it does... (remember: unlike matter, gravity spreads through ALL dimensions available)

General Gaming / RE: psp specs revealed
« on: August 06, 2003, 12:51:10 AM »
A friend of mine stated his Laptops battery life goes down to less than 2 hours (from 8) if he uses the CD drive. Imagine a device that constantly accesses it. But then again, that won't be the selling point of the PSP.

Sony focuses on power and features, while N prioritizes size and battery life over the rest. Nonetheless, the lifetime isn't important for most buyers (at least prior to buying) so N won't score with that.

So it depends on the games: Sony can't get GTA for the PSP, as GTA1&2 are on GBA and 3 won't run on the PSP (requires better hardware). While Nintendo currently scores with having the most popular franchises on the GBA (e.g. Pokemon). If sony can't deliver a "killer app" most people will reason that for USD200 they can get a full console and get one instead. Parents will more likely get their kids a GBA than a PSP, just because of the price.

boggy b: If the thing can handle 15mps, it can handle 15mps. Slow down would mean it had to draw more than 15mps. Millions per second is a unit that includes time, so it is irrelevant whether it's 15mps@60FPS or 15mps@30FPS. The latter just has more polies per frame.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: gcn disk drive burnout???????????
« on: August 05, 2003, 11:17:55 PM »
In my experience it's harder to insert/remove a disk from a jewel case than those GC disk cases... and all of my disks are completely scratch free.
Nicotine causes a nasty yellow layer on any horizontal surface (like the lens) which might interfere with the laser. Usually it only thickens on exposed surfaces, but maybe it takes a lot less of the stuff to nuke a laser...
Does anyone know if GC disks are prone to DVD rot?

Room fans (the electric kind) do wonders when it comes to ventilation. Also, if you live in a (Sub-)Tropical region you should avoid playing during the hottest times.

Joe: You know the IDSA is most likely a group of suit terrorists that would like you to not know/give up your rights for their profit? The RIAA says there is no fair use, while the law says otherwise.

Most EULAs violate laws. E.g.: Many state you may not reverse engineer a software, while the laws of France explicitly grant you this freedom. So not everything in these agreements is legally binding. BTW, when does one legally agree to the EULA of a console game? It's clear with the PC, but what about the console? Do I agree when I fire the game up? Do I when I hand over my money to the clerk at the store? And what with those games that don't even have an EULA? This area of law is pretty grey and it's not clear whether these EULAs are even legal.

Example: You bought a GC game which came without manual (let's say, used.). Now, the disk contains no info about any licenses, neither does the packaging. That means, you are not aware that there are any contracts involved and probably even own the copy. In case of Metroid Prime (didn't check the other ones) even the manual says nothing about licenses...

That licensed for PS2 probably means they acquired a license from Sony to use the PS2 platform, just as you see "Licensed by Nintendo" on GBA games.

Emulators aren't covered by copyright AFAIK. While a patent covers the way of working (probably a hardware implementation), the copyright is merely for the device itself. Unless you build a PS2 (or paint it or whatever) it's not a copyright thing. I'm not sure, but most countries have additional laws for interoperability as well. Either way, as long as you didn't know you're commiting a crime, the courts will probably let you go free.

Hitman: You know, the BSA could force PGC to give 'em your IP number, then force your ISP to give them your name, address, etc. and sue the hell outta you, whereby the courts would only get involved in the last step? Now you know why I hate Sony, MS and all other members of BSA, MPAA and RIAA...

« on: August 04, 2003, 01:06:30 AM »
I think review scores are flawed for one reason: They use the upper scale! A 7 is considered fairly bad already. Means there are about 3 or 4 (depending on site) scores to measure good games while there are much more for bad ones. Why not change the system so the average game gets a 5 instead of a 7? If more quality titles come out, you need to lower the score for a certain quality!

Poly: That's the same as in the first post. Except it's direct and therefore against the forum rules.

Ninja: Number one was Atari busting a deal with N to manufacture the Famicom stateside. You just have to accept they deal out against everybody and that N had its stupid moments.

On the original question: No, I don't have it and I don't think a SHMUP is worth EUR60. Considering how many of those you can get as freeware on the internet, I'd rather save my money (which is currently getting low due to my new GBA...) for titles like VJ and MKDD. Well, okay, I'm in Europe and there'll be some time until those come out here, but nonetheless I need to recover my finances. If I find Ika for 20, I might consider it, but 60... No.

USD60 for a GC game isn't too bad in my eyes, but I'm used to EUR60 games...

Nintendo Gaming / RE: nes 2?
« on: July 13, 2003, 01:06:28 AM »
Do you have any idea what amounts of heat PCs (desktop and laptop) produce? Athlons run at around 70°C and there have been cases of people suffering severe burns from their laptops. The GBA runs at around 16MHz (granted, RISC). Do you know when that was considered modern? And do you know what power consumption laptops have? It may be possible to cram all that stuff into a small device, but you sure as hell wouldn't enjoy using it. Active cooling is no option on a handheld.

See your Gamecube? See those openings on the sides? Block 'em with your hands while the device is running to get a feeling for what that'd be like. (I hope you have read the BOfH and know how to handle this advice)

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Being online isn't worth it. . .
« on: July 13, 2003, 12:22:44 AM »
Nintendo has a contract with Gamespy. Gamespy is for the most part free. Yet they are a huge company. If ads were so unprofitable, Gamespy would've gone down years ago.

N have revealed zero titles with online capacities so far and there isn't THAT much time left until the next wave rolls in. Maybe they'll start pushing it in 2004, maybe they'll use it as a launch option for the N5. I think they'll go with 2004, as the GSI contracts are pretty early for a late 2005 system.

Of course I (and probably over 90% of the people on this board) don't assume N does this because it's better for us, but because it's better for them. They are a company, after all. But at the current time, online is no gain for them. Online is risky and seeing how it turned out on the other systems, N probably decided that there's not much fish to catch.

Not that I care. I'm not saying this because N doesn't support it, I have UT2003 and Quake 3 right here on my comp, with an always-on broadband connection and yet haven't played either online.

Nintendo Gaming / The PS3 WILL release on schedule.
« on: July 12, 2003, 12:01:27 AM »
Some say the PS3 will launch in 2006/07. Of course, Sony won't do that mistake.

Story at The Register

Abstract: Elpida, the official supplier of RAM for the PS2 will start manufacturing the XDR DRAM (Rambus Yellowstone) in late 2004, with higher production in 2005. This RAM will very likely be used in the PS3 and suggests the production of the PS3 will start somewhere around 2005, making a launch in late 2005 highly probable.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: How will games be different on a new console?
« on: July 11, 2003, 10:59:29 PM »
You know how the games on the next gen will be different? NOT AT ALL. So, they got their engine done and save time... What will they do with it? Polish the game? Bwahaha, good one! They'll ship it and start the next one, mo' games mo' money! Don't expect any radical changes because the hardware is faster. The attitude of the publishers is what needs the update, not the hardware. Innovation isn't limited by the hardware, it's limited by the will of the publishers to take a "risk" and make a game that's not tried-and-tested. That's why the PC is flooded by FPS and RTS games.

Yeah, call it 5 Megaton, name the processor Warhead and manufacture it in Hiroshima...
Hehe, imagine N got inspired by Megatokyo and packs its next console into an "EDS". Now, THAT would get those 12 year olds coming in like lawyers smelling money.

At The Register (or their source, gameindustry.biz) they also called it N5, but that might not mean much. N5... Nintendo's 5th. This WILL change and I hope not to some crap like NES Advance.

JB: Yes, I know the PAL version got a lot of bugfixes, but I consider releasing a buggy version as retail anywhere is not easily forgiven. The translation errors occur in the PAL version, haven't tested the US one.
The Garden of Life is described as a GROVE of life (grove highlighted) and the lava basin is described as SEA of molten rock (sea highlighted, usually the highlighted word occurs in the name of the room). There was a room named grove at the surface with water in it and another one named sea of fire with two pillars in the center. That's why this point was really frustrating for me, I searched in the wrong rooms.
