Nintendo Gaming / RE: Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicle Thread

Professional: Wasn't too sure, the characters in Love Hina all look pretty generic (the annotations of the manga even state where the ideas were taken from...)

They're different games and you should make your choice based on your expectations. Me? I chose neither.

Japan is ahead of us, not behind. So if it's two days here it's one day there.

Well, if you say there aren't enough I take it as you don't like a lot of 'em. Since if you like most of the games there's no real shortage, I assumed you were short on the kinds of games you like. Or you consider 20 games as not enough.

If it's really a VR view device, count me out. Anything but.

Searanox: Somehow missed your post. Might be due to me relying way too much on the "what's new" cookie.
The dumbing down cannot be seen in a video. The PC version was supposed to have a more complex gameplay and heavier emphasis on teamplay than the XB version. I didn't pull that out of my rear end, that's what was said in a preview in a PC Games magazine (they said they played both versions, so...). Don't ask me which issue, that's too long ago, I don't remember anymore. Anyway, that's GAMEPLAY, it has zero to do with graphics (which are of course similar, the XBox is identical to the PCs of that time period). I cannot play Halo online to try anything out, the game's not on my "worth my money" list and thus not in my posession.

jaz: The devs themselves usually don't see a cent of the money generated by sales. It all goes to the publisher or their employer, the employees rarely get more money for better sales. That's the gamble the publisher does for the dev house: The devs get a steady income while the publisher becomes rich if the game sells good or takes a hit if it doesn't. Dev houses producing games that don't sell get dissolved pretty fast, though.

-2. Subtract 10 if knowing only John Lennon's name counts as not knowing him.

Cyberstar: If your favourite genre is FPS, then why in hell did you buy a console? There are more than enough of 'em on PC! If you don't like the console-style games the GC offers, you shouldn't have bought one.

Forget it. Abstract or innovative games don't sell.

MMOs are in a bad phase right now. It's gold-rush time, everybody wants to make the next big MMO game and rake in the big money, what they don't realize is that only one or two out of the hundreds of games can break even - and you can bet one of them is made by Sony Online Entertainment.

Publishers love the PS2 because even crap sells on it. Developers hate the PS2 because of the retrictions placed by the hardware.

That's exactly how mobile phone games work!
Well, okay, they let you download them from the web by using just the phone, but I don't think that degrades the idea in any way...

And you only need those because Windows is too stupid to loop mount an image. Good OSes (like Linux) can do that out of the box.

Mario: Megaton Hammer, weapon for Link in Soul Calibur II... I'm not sure it was really called like that in the Zelda games...

Hmmmm, one can write PIAC and Megaton by disabling emoticons in a post...

Perhaps they'll find some comfort in the fact that japanese gamers voted Tales of Symphonia as the most satisfying gaming experiene of 2003, just ahead of MKDD. FFX was behind both despite being sold like 5 times as much as both combined...

Who cares N isn't outselling the PS2? They needed to defeat Microsoft and stop the talks of Nintendo going down (Microsoft will fall first, anyway).

Bungie had to change the Halo level design to dumb it down for console. The PC version was originally meant to be a really deep, tactical affair with emphasis on LAn and online team play, the XB version was simplified to make it more of an action game. Gearbox obviousely took the final console version, not the PC version as the basis for their port.

Hm, N5 spec-making sounds fun... Let's see what I can do.

CPU: Single IBM PPC-based device, full 64 or 128-bit, focus on floating point operations.
GPU: Two GPUs spliting the workload (cheaper than one big chip), can be made to handle specific parts each (think splitscreen)
RAM: 32MB high-performance RAM for CPU, 64MB fast RAM (texture&geometry) for GPUs, 128 or 256MB "slow" RAM (i.e. standard DDR-RAM speed), additional video and sound buffers.
Read-Media: If available, mini-BRD or other blue laser based tech, slightly larger than standard DVD disks, written from outside to inside, if blue laser tech is too expensive.
Write-Media: Either proprietary construct with flash-rom or SecureDigital cards with custom formatting.
Other:
SPDIF-output for sound if not too epensive
4 Controller ports, incompatible with previous devices (come on, we know Nintendo), wireless controller available.
RJ45 Ethernet connector, 10/100MBit
Connectors for GBA and Secret Third Pillar
BIOS handles online connection setup, games cannot access this information (for security reasons)
Audio chip with built-in Ogg Vorbis decoding (if not too expensive to make)
Controller with trackball instead of C-stick

Casing should be white and paintable at launch, advertise this "paint your own shell" feature.
