Well, anything compatible with any *nix could be called a Unix  game, so... Wasn't Quake 3 released for Linux first?

Actraiser's nice, but not as good as "The Violonist of Hameln" (also by Enix). Now that game rocked!

If it resembles Zelda, it's copyright infringement. Nintendo rarely nukes games with stolen sprites though, I doubt they'll take action.

Probably some real Linux, so no Lindows (it's as secure as Windows 98, BTW). They have the tux program done already (that's how it began on the XBox as well). I hope for a Debian.

128MB isn't the RAM, it's the media size.

Two screens make sense. Descent allows you to make one of your stats screens show the view of the guidebot (Descent 2 only), missile view, rear view, etc. The UT2003 mod U4eT2003 has a weapon (tomahawk) that fires guided missiles that get their own little view in your main view. Like mentioned, team sports games would allow you to have a large overview of the playing field for planning your moves.
There's no reason this cannot be done with a larger screen, but that'd be inefficent concerning the size of the device

Well, people say N's current games are worse than their previous ones, eh? Well then, take out those old consoles and play your "old treasures". After all those years your perspective might have changed. I spent hours upon hours on Super Mario Land and its sequel, but when I played them again half a year ago I beat them in half an hour each. Try it, those old games seem really different now that you've tasted the blood.
"Old school" gamers call other people ignorant for not liking Space Invaders or calling Pong boring. Well, those games might have held an appeal back then, but nowadays we know the taste of blood, we expect more from our games. By the standards we applied back in 1990, Super Mario Sunshine would be a universally praised superhit, nowadays everybody just shouts "this is worse than Mario 64!". Have the games changed or did we?
People also expect jumps in quality that cannot be repeated. If Sony's games were around before the invention of 3d, everybody would expect a jump in gameplay as large as the one from 2d to 3d in every release. That's plain impossible. Quotes like "It's good, but it doesn't have the jump in quality that its predecessor had" litter reviews of Soul Calibur II. Was that because Soul Calibur I was soo good or because Soul Edge just sucked? Apparently you may not put all you can do into a single game unless you want people to complain about the successor. Be happy it was in the previous game already and you didn't have to wait until now to get it!

It's still annoying as hell when you have to play through in one session. Other games implement those one-time saves (that are deleted upon load)

General Chat / RE: Nintendo Innovations 1: The hand controller.
« on: January 20, 2004, 05:19:21 AM »
The thing on PC wasn't exactly rumble, Force Feedback had more options (it could tilt your stick in any direction). Force Feedback works by using motors to move the control part against a base device, rumble just vibrated the controller. With FF you could feel things like resistance, which cannot be done with rumble.
6 face buttons are overkill. I have six face buttons on my Sidewinder Pad, but they just keep confusing the player (happens pretty often that one slides off the right controls and uses another row of buttons instead). They're only useful for games using a button layout similar to the GC's (Eternal Fighter Zero, Fighting game, 3+1 layout). Why do people need six buttons for fighting games, anyway? OMF worked with 2!

BTW, it's noticeable how, at the beginning of the first 3d generation, everybody stuck to digital controls (the placement of the N64's d-pad suggests this), but at the end of the firs/beginning of the second everybody noticed analogue was more important. The XB and GC both have the a-stick as their main input now.

Well, it's only a shortage if you dislike about 90% of the good games. Maybe you should check your preferences and choose another device if you're unhappy with the selection on your current one.

Unless it's as bad as Tempest, I'll grab it for sure, that's clear. I love abstract games. It's sponsored by Peter Molyneaux, so sales don't seem to matter, originality is what the "publisher" wants. What we should ask ourselves: Will we remember this game en years on?

Errrr... Battlefield has vehicles and those were not stolen from Halo, they were taken from Codename: Eagle (I think that's its name), the previous game DICE developed. So, in effect, Codename: Eagle had vehicles before Halo had. The discussion about the game sounds like it was a LOT of fun in multiplayer.

As far as I understood it, Namco made R: Racing Evolution as the next Ridge Racer. It's said to play very different and not be a worthy successor.

I have a friend who's playing GTAVC and Freelancer like mad. He's modding the hell out of both games (even in Freelancer online!). After a few months he even felt obliged to buy GTAVC.

GTA is innovative, but only to a certain degree. That's why it's so popular, very few innovation, mostly known material. If you stray too much from established concepts, you won't sell anything.

The problem with Tempest is the gameplay. It's basically a shoot'em'up (it was a 3d Space Invaders at first...) with some seriously unfair mechanics.
If anyone in here needs to refresh their memory on Tempest, here is a pretty good clone with a few added features (just don't collect powerups if you want to play it like Tempest 1). Tempest is so awful, I bought it for DM5 and gave it away shortly thereafter. I hope Unity is better.

Mario: If so, can you name a few well selling abstract or heavily innovative games?
