The fact that they can already say how many costumes there will be in the end hints at unlock codes.

So Nathan doesn't mind being called Mufasa but what about Mohammed?

BTW, that Homefront deal is on Steam as well but usually retailers are cheaper and I think you can get Metro 2033 for 5€ these days. Plus who wants Homefront?

I think I saw a 3DS in one of the videos of the refugee camps.

I want to see more run and gun shooters like Doom and Quake. Doom is still the best single-player FPS I've played, I won't even touch Call of Duty's single player because of how lame it is.

You would probably like Bulletstorm, then, which goes back to that simple almost run & gun mentality.  Plus, the way that the game slowly dolls out new weapons, upgrades, and their associated skill shots constantly pushes the player to change how they play the game.  It's an incredibly stupid game, but it's just a lot of fun.

It gets a little too bogged down in setpieces at times. I'm not sure it's really more stupid than any other FPS, the story seems to be written as something dead serious (outside of your character acting out his inner child while controlling that mecha godzilla thing).

What's the point of stopping all public transportation? Can't they at least drive slowly?

Also for a proper Disaster: Day of Crisis you need to ride that bike away from a wave of lava from a volcano while trying to catch nuclear terrorists :P.

Also according to those pictures, Japan has paper streets.

I knew they had paper walls in their old style traditional housing, but paper streets seems a little unsafe. It's also kinda weird how that one street "tore" right along the center dividing line, as if that was where it was scored liked ripping lined paper out of a book.

Major streets are often renovated one lane at a time so the center line is often where two tarrings meet. No surprise that the asphalt is weaker there.

Yeah but it's not any worse than KDR paying 60 euros for games.

I'm not paying that much, I wait for price drops :P. Regular price for HD games is 70 Euros, BTW.

It's more that the FPS genre is on a path to consolidation where the winners rise higher while the rest sinks lower. So you either get a huge megahit or you lose.

That probably means importing won't be possible.

Also I hope for Nintendo that there are absolutely zero false positives.

Just because they say so doesn't mean it isn't vaporware.

Nintendo Gaming / WiiWare = portfolio building
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:18:21 AM »
I remember hearing (on a podcast IIRC) that WiiWare and DSiWare are commonly used by developers to build up a portfolio. XBLA has insanely high requirements before they let you in, WiiWare doesn't so developers make WiiWare games to get the attention of the big publishers with access to XBLA and PSN. That's why you see so many games migrate from WiiWare to other platforms, the developer was never really planning on making money on WiiWare.

Meh.

1. This game has been vaporware for years already.
2. High Voltage isn't exactly a quality developer, they're a shovelware house that made some attempts at high quality games but still didn't get anything better than "acceptable" done.

Retail PC releases of indie games happen a lot in some regions. Here in Germany almost anything that's successful on Steam hits retail. It's often overpriced (20€ for Magicka?) but hey, that's the packaging premium.

BTW, Team Meat stated that the PC version made them more money than the 360 one.

I enjoyed Brothers in Arms on the DS, that was heavily arcadified. The complexity is what annoys me about Gameloft FPSes on the Ipod as well, there's so many buttons that you need to hit. BiA is much simpler, I think the only aiming down the sights that you do is with the sniper rifle (isn't it silly how many games have aiming down sights these days? Friggin' Bulletstorm has that, for the latter 2/3rds of the campaign I completely forgot that option existed!).

What's not often talked about on the App Store is the sheer number of failures, developers that just went on a mad gold rush and ended up ignored and forgotten. How many games that aren't shown on the front page of the store do people even know? People complain about the lack of marketing for WiiWare but most games on the App Store get zero exposure, not helped by the complete swamping with shovelware. Unlike XBLIG there's no one-game-one-genre policy, most shovelware spammers simply tag their game as being in every genre, flooding the lists. Yes, DSiWare is not competitive with that but there's also pricing expectations hurting aspiring developers, if you charge more than a dollar people wait for pricedrops because they know those will come. The App Store creates a perception of near zero value with its pricing strategy. BTW, there is an equivalent to NSMB on the App Store, it's Giana Sisters, a port fo the DS version. Fortunately for Nintendo Apple's no-button design philosophies make games like that nearly unplayable.

No, I think it's spot on that he's talking about the setting. Dude with sword defeats dragons and stuff to save princess is regular fantasy. Size-changing plumber jumping 10 meters high and stomping on angry mushroom people and using turtle shells as projectiles is just WTF.

It's a bad thing if they want people to buy the game.

Honestly I think they'd be better off by making a new 2D Mario instead, this time with real imagination added. NSMBW sold like hotcakes despite being fairly weak compared to SMW and SMB3. DKCR had imagination going but the brand will probably keep it from selling as well as NSMBW. Add the creativity of DKCR to the brand power of Super Mario Bros and you've got a winner.

Speaking of battery life, I'm fine with the estimated time the 3DS was stated to last on one charge.  I feel like it's time people face reality and realize that any modern electronic handheld device from your iPhone/flavor of the month Android to the 3DS and even upcoming NGP will sport battery lives that are inferior to past generation hardware by virtue that they just do so much more!

New hardware also reduces power consumption so you can maintain a high battery life despite getting better hardware by staying behind the curve, something Nintendo is most likely doing.

If the 3DS has a battery life that's on par with the iPod Touch it's an abject failure.

On the other hand the DSi supposedly gets 2-4 hours of battery life when running at full brightness but by going down a few steps you can get up to 14 hours or so out of it.

1172
I'm not sold on any of them. Maybe if the reviews are positive. I'm mostly interested in the 3DS as a way of replacing my DSi with something that has working shoulder buttons while replacing my mother's DS Phat with one that has an unscratched touchscreen (she doesn't need the right shoulder button in the types of games she plays). I'd likely end up buying a 3DS down the road anyway.

Is it possible your son might have modded it or tried to mod it without you knowing about it?  All it really requires is an SD card.   If it has been softmodded there is probably a way for you to fix this problem yourself if it becomes too much of a pain in the ass for the reps to do it.

It also requires specific games.
