TalkBack / Re: Seriously Nintendo, Still No Word on NFC Features?
« on: August 26, 2012, 09:20:29 AM »
I have always believed that NFC would be used for card games at least in Japan.  I swipe my cards you swipe your cards and then watch the ensuing chaos on the TV.  Hopefully they put a little more production value into than Magic the Gathering games.

The other thought I have had for NFC is free to play games.  I believe Iwata alluded to its use on the Wii U  in one of his speeches, and almost every podcast and article I read seems to think that free to play is the future for the gaming industry.  Wouldn't it be amazing if Nintendo was actually ahead of the curve on this one.  I have actually been hoping that RFN, Connectivity or the Famicast would address this topic.  Is free to play really the future of gaming?  I know Nintendo will probably not be truly keen on this idea for some of their major franchises and if NFC is used for free to play games it will probably be third parties that use it , but what would a free to play game look like from Nintendo?

I will be disappointed if Nintendoland is not a pack in and they try and sell the system with only Panoramic View and AR games.  However, some kind of classic board game bundle preloaded would be cool.  Something like checkers, chess, mahjong, card games etc.  We have seen some indication of this with the early gamepad footage, but I am guessing it will be unlikely.  Parlor games on your TV would not sell a lot of systems, but I would enjoy it.

TalkBack / Re: The 3DS Fall Might Break Its Back
« on: August 14, 2012, 08:06:34 AM »
Here is my conspiracy theory.  Nintendo short changes the 3DS this fall so that Wii U isn't overshadowed by its better line up.  Then to get your fix you by buying a Wii U and more of its games than you had planned.  Next spring when Wii U slows down you release some of your big 3DS titles to satiate gamers.

I don't really believe this, but I think very few people who promote conspiracy theories really believe them.

TalkBack / Re: Mario Isn't Missing
« on: August 09, 2012, 10:14:51 AM »
Isn't this as much a problem for the whole industry and not just Nintendo.  Pretty much everything produced is either a sequel or a game that is highly derivative of a popular genre.  There are very few new and innovative IPs across the various platforms.  The one place this doesn't hold true is small independent download titles, but for retail games everyone, not just Nintendo and Mario, is banking on established franchises to insure a profit.

I want one, but the color choices are making me hesitate.  I am hoping I will be swayed by some pre-order deal.
Especially since I think I told my nephew I would sell him my old 3DS.

I have  never played a rabbids game, but this one looks to have more potential than I originally gave it credit for.  I am also starting to see the potential of asymmetric game play.

I still cringe when I look at my GBA, PS2 and Dreamcast collection.  I have given up on everything older, but of course that hasn't stopped me from buying a bunch of games off of the Steam Summer Sale.

Xenoblade and Monster Hunter I will beat you! (I hope.)

I also love fighting games and used to think I was good against human opponents,  but now my teenage son routinely beats me at SF4, Brawl and Tatsunoko.  He doesn't even like fighting games, except Brawl, and only plays to humor me.  Old age and slow reflexes suck, but not as bad as your teenage son rubbing another loss in your face at games you used to think you were good at.

My 8 year old daughter really wants this and that makes sense.  Almost every show that is on Disney or Nickelodeon seems to have some of the actors singing in the show. Its Hannah Montana to the 10th power.  If Nintendo markets this right it could be huge for tween girls wanting to be like their favorite stars.

I'd like to see them start to mix in more GBC and, yes, GBA games instead of just 8 bit games.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 295: Too Many Bones
« on: June 25, 2012, 03:54:15 PM »
I found the discussion on whether Wii U will be as successful as Wii very interesting, and overall I would agree with the RFN crew.  However, the question that I have for anyone who can answer is what about Asia?  South Korea but especially China seem like they should be up and coming markets.  The Wii U seems like it is ideally situated with the second screen to take advantage of these markets where TV penetration and living space isn't as large as in the US.  I even recall Nintendo saying last year the second screen is ideal for the Japanese living room.  Also I remember someone in the forums pointing out Sing would sell a ton of systems in Asia.  So how about it can new Asian markets push the Wii U to new heights in the coming years?

I was always curious if they could do two resistive screens side by side, so that you could have "multi touch" with one touch on each side.  I understand there would probably be problems swiping or drawing from 1 screen to the other,  but I think it is an interesting idea.

For the record I do not like capacitive touch and often tap the wrong thing.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Launch Titles Will Not Support Two GamePads
« on: June 14, 2012, 03:20:47 PM »
I think this a mistake.  It limits both sports and fighting games on the console.  I wonder if Nintendo coming around to two controllers late in the development created some tension between them and EA.  A lot of their games would benefit with two Gamepads.

I also kind of resent Nintendo seemingly shoving asymmetric game play down my throat and I would think developers would feel this way too.

My guess is that SmartGlass functions are going to be vary basic.  How can you do anything complex across such a varied set of hardware?  Is the person on a phone or Ipod? Android, Ipad?   What version? Screen size and functions are so varied that it would be hard to get too complex as a developer.
I will believe it when I see it- Microsoft programming for ios devices and doing it well on top of that is hard to fathom.

I am a pessimist by nature, so I have a lot of misgivings about E3 this year, but I am going to try and put a positive spin on it:

1) Most hardcore Nintendo fans are going to buy the system for Mario and Pikmin.  Yes, we want Zelda and Metroid, but we know they will be coming, so we will buy to support the company and play Mario.

2) I saw Reggie in interviews emphasize how they wanted to emphasize singing, dancing and fitness games.  This appeals to casual gamers and will lead to sales.  Maybe these fads have passed like the Rock Band craze but millions of people still have balance boards and Just Dance 3 seemed to indicate that 4 would sell well.  Personally, I was hoping that the camera in the Gamepad would be able to mimic some of Kinect's or Move's functions for Just Dance.

3) Less than impressive ports are to be expected aren't they.  The positive side of this is at least studios are working with the hardware, so that future games will be better or new ideas will spawn.

4) There is still a lot of time before the release. In that time Nintendo will fill in the blanks.  They have been trying to stay in the news spotlight through Nintendo Direct for months now.  I am sure this will continue.  I think we will also see a lot at TGS from developers like Capcom.  Sometimes we forget that a 1 hour press conference is not the be all and end all of information.  To paraphrase you do not want to shoot your load too early; you want it to build to release day.

5) Two controller support is big now we can have synchronous game play  with our asynchronous games.  Sport and fighting games needed this.  By next year I expect EA to have solid games for head to head play.  I can't imagine someone not preferring what Wii U could do for Madden.  I know Microsoft mentioned Smart Glass, but I am not going to want to switch between my controller and my Ipad to play.  Also, as Neal pointed out this could lead to increased development from third parties.

6) The hardware doesn't sound like it is super impressive, so that will result in a lower costs.

7) Trine 2 and maybe Tanks! Tanks! Tanks! show that they do have games for the new eshop

I am writing this before the 3DS software conference- maybe a secret reveal?

Finally, everything Nintendo did seems geared at sales.  Unfortunately, the investors don't seem to agree as the stock dropped this morning, but I am remaining hopeful.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Will Support External USB Hard Disk
« on: June 06, 2012, 02:53:18 PM »
I sometimes wonder if they have even finalized all the specs.  I expected a leak from some developer this week on Wii U's relative power, but there hasn't been a peep.  I know that Nintendo wants people to focus on the games, but the best way to get people to think about something is to keep it a secret.  Hopefully, they will finally release everything in a week or two when the E3 buzz has worn down.  Then we can talk for a week or two and then refocus on the games

Also, as far as the internal flash memory goes, it should be at least twice as much as the disks hold.  Otherwise average families will never download full games.  Give them enough memory to try downloading a couple of times.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Pro Controller Set to Release with Wii U
« on: June 03, 2012, 07:35:09 PM »
I have a sinking feeling that this video and new controller hint at only one WiiU gamepad being usuable at a time.  That could be a deal breaker for many people, me included.

I would be in a catch 22 then.  Because the game would have to be about not playing games to make my spouse happy so by playing it I would of course make her unhappy.  The point is she thinks I should play games less.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U

I agree with you on the third party support pulling in the teen market, but people usually buy Nintendo to play their games not third party games.  So here is hoping that the Wii U third party games will be superior and turn a few heads.

@Fatty_the_Hutt, @NWR_Insanolord I respect both of your opinions, but I fear that it is not a great business model for the long term.  If Nintendo attracts them when they are young, but loses them from there teen years on then they won't be in business for much longer.

Yes, Nintendo has great games, but that is not the perception of up and coming soon to be parents who will not buy Nintendo in 10 years for their kids but one of the competitors.  On top of that both Sony and Microsoft were/are doing everything in their power to expand their market with Kinect and Move, and Nintendo is promising to reacapture the core gamer, so I feel they have to go after teens for the future of the system.

I do hold hope that the Wii U could be this system, but only time will tell.
