Re: Bravely Default localization, they did add some unnecessary words in the localization, and sometimes had to lengthen lines to convey a meaning that is not directly translatable, but the total number of lines was the same.

Smash must have the element of randomness; random stages, random items.  This is how the game was designed to be played.  Likening it to sports, the pro version of soccer uses the same rules we use in our bar leagues, conversely, a game of poker on our 25-cent stakes table has the same element of randomness that the pro games have.

Okay...
Now let's look at eSports. Starcraft 2, Dota 2 and LoL.

The most randomness you will get is critical hits in Dota and LoL as far as I'm aware, but they don't affect the games significantly.

If random items and hazard stages made for competitive tournaments then Smash Bros. would be played in tournaments with random items and hazard stages like it was on the US West coast initially. Unfortunately the guys on RFN don't seem to understand competitive games at their core. It's not really bad or surprising really, I realize there's a large gap between non-competitive and competitive gamers so I don't expect you to be experts on the topic, I just hate it when you talk about things like this because of it.

If you are concerned about the competitive players "tainting" Smash Bros. due to the competitive aspect, well, ever heard of Brawl? The one no one plays competitively because it's not as competitive as Melee? Remember the countless times Sakurai has said the competitive scene is not his focus? I don't really understand where this is coming from.

I hope that this new game will be viable competitively like Melee. If anything I am worried that it won't be competitive, and that Melee will be phased out, because it's a great, versatile competitive game. I don't see why you want to "sacrifice" the competitive scene when Melee was just as good as a casual game. There has always been the option to pick the stage you want and the items you want, solid mechanics will only improve the game.

I'm a week late on listening to these episodes, but I would buy MP3s of Greg rambling about any topic.

the sheer ignorance in these comments from people who act like they know how to "fix" nintendo is hilarious

So little representation for DS, JUS is probably the best online game on Nintendo systems.

there are still plenty of people playing competitive games, most notably jump ultimate stars.

and if it includes games which have DLC, it will really screw people over. is there a list of ds games with dlc somewhere? i want to make sure i do not miss downloading that content before it's gone.

Have you actually played Bravely Default? Have you heard about the extremely shitty last chapter? I wouldn't blindingly follow this game just because of the hype.
so it was released in all regions but 1 and has gotten rave reviews everywhere but it's all "hype"? lol, just admit you are desperate to find flaws in it

It's funny how a lot of people , especially self professed "i'm not really into jrpg's" kind of people, are turned off by the job system.   I admit, I am REALLY into jrpg's, and i have no problem with job systems, but no one complained about the job system in 4 heroes if light, and that was the same developer.   And everyone gushed over fire emblem last year and that was most definitely a job system.

I never used Second Seals in Fire Emblem.

It didn't feel like a game with a job system to me.
k then pick your jobs and never change them. now the game doesn't have a job system. HURR

wow so negative. this is the video game that will save video games. thank u square enix for yet another flawless masterpiece after 4 heroes of light. i would take points off for removing underage sex jokes and skimpy clothing but that is a fault of the dirty western culture.

DS is region-free anyway, so you could do something like Jump Ultimate Stars for a RetroActive. But it would be hard to recommend something that is only available in Japanese for an English language podcast.

Next time, just write the actual price.

Oh and you got pictures as achievements essentially, so if they are completely gone it does take away some of the fun. If I remember correctly you got an enemy's picture for the first time you defeated it.

If it comes over I will still get it, it was one of the first games I played.

It does suck that they just removed the versus mode and especially picture stuff. Even though I never had a Gameboy Printer, I liked looking at the pictures.

and for the same reason: you have to mod your console/handheld to run it if you live in NA
um, no...?

Not sure if this is even relevant anymore.

But with Bravely Default coming out in NA I thought it would be a good time to do a RetroActive on Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light, maybe after everyone has played Bravely Default since there are some comparisons to be drawn between the two games, although 4 Heroes is pretty crazy in its own right. As far as I'm aware only James has played it. At least I can only find one episode of him talking about it from 2010 (before my time).

It's pretty easy to find, I got it for like 20 bucks on eBay new, I'm sure you can find cheap used copies too.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo DS Games Coming to Wii U Virtual Console
« on: January 29, 2014, 10:02:56 PM »
Why would I want to play portable games on a platform that is not portable, when the 3DS clearly has the technology to support downloadable GBA (ambassador titles) and DS games (backwards compatibility, Advance Wars Japanese release)?

I would rather pay $20+ for a DS game on Amazon or eBay than $5 for a digital copy on Wii U.

-No games that are like nothing we have ever seen before
Same holds true for the other platforms, except it's even worse because of fewer (good) exclusives
Quote
-substantially underpowered while being overpriced because of its controller
So they should ship without a controller?
Quote
-even a good chunk of their own fans aren't excited about it
That's not an "issue" with the system
Quote
-an online situation that still needs an assload of work
It really doesn't
Quote
-multiplatform games that are laughably unsupported both by the developers and by the consumers
Many of those multiplatform games are better on Wii U than on other platforms and that didn't stop the DS Wii and 3DS from succeeding as the third party games always come mostly from Japan and after the platforms start seeing success instead of before. Anyway "unsupported by consumers" is also not an issue with the system and they are supported about as well as any other port by the developers, in some situations better.

-one of their biggest features (off-tv play) is now a check box on the PS4. While there are some differences like the fact that Wii U is only one cost and the screen is bigger, the Vita streaming works better across longer distances and supports a significantly higher percentage of PS4 games.
nowhere near comparable due to the points you outlined yourself and the fact that it costs 250 dollars while you claim the wii u controller is overpriced at 100 with better screen & controls (vita is missing buttons and requires the use of the inaccurate and obnoxious rear touch pad to compensate).

« on: October 19, 2013, 11:30:13 PM »
Playing a (good) Nintendo game makes me feel happy like nothing else. There's some kind of warmth to it. And I usually prefer to play on Nintendo platforms because they are mostly free of the money grubbing bullshit of Sony, Microsoft, and the third parties that bring the big Western games to their platforms (season passes, paid subscriptions for online features, etc.). So everything people dislike about Nintendo? The way they're behind on technology and business practices? I fucking love it. That way, they stay on their little island and I get to play fun games without the third parties jumping on board and ruining it all for me.

Those are some pretty good sales, I think I will finally get Soul Hackers and Etrian Odyssey 4.

I went with Prince of Persia, I don't feel like Wii Sports Resort would have that much content to discuss and The Last Story, Pandora's Tower and Xenoblade Chronicles have already been discussed on the show so I'm not really looking forward to another series of complaints about JRPGs.

Glad I don't give a crap about trading in that game.
