TalkBack / Re: New NWR Forum Mafia Game Starting Soon

I should also point out that registering for a Nintendo World Report forums account is free, easy, can be done in minutes and will also allow you to post comments on articles on the site like I'm doing right now and participate in any other community events that are hosted on the forums in the future.

As was mentioned in the Talkback thread sign ups end August 10th. The game itself will begin on the 12th.

TalkBack / New NWR Forum Mafia Game Starting Soon
« on: July 22, 2019, 01:19:46 PM »

Come join in on the long-running NWR tradition.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/51198/new-nwr-forum-mafia-game-starting-soon

The Nintendo World Report forums will be holding its 81st Forum Mafia game. The sign up period for the game will go from now until August 10th, with the game starting August 12th. The  theme of this game is based on The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, which was recently featured on an episode of NWR’s The Thirsty Mage. If you haven’t played that game, don’t worry, as the theme is largely cosmetic and an opportunity for fun role-playing opportunities more than anything, so don’t be afraid to join just because you don’t know anything about Skyrim.

What is Forum Mafia?

Mafia is best described as a game of social deduction. It pits an informed minority against an uninformed majority. It is the job of a small group who form the Mafia to eliminate many players from the game as possible. The rest of the players, known as the townies, need to be able to find out who the Mafia players are and eliminate them before it's too late. There may also be third party roles who have their own agenda and victory conditions.

Why should I sign up?

For the same reason that Mafia on the Nintendo World Report forums has lasted as long as it has since our first game was started on the then Planet GameCube forums in January of 2006: Mafia is just a good time. Whether you're just there to roleplay or you're in it to win it, there is a lot of fun to be had by playing Mafia on the Nintendo World Report forums.

I have more questions. Where do I go?

Honestly the best way to get a feel for how the game works is to just sign up and get your feet wet. First hand experience will answer a lot of the questions you may have while also giving you a feel for how the game works. More experienced community members will be happy to answer any further questions you have.

I also made a FAQ thread about a year ago on the forums that you can find here. That may answer some of your questions as well.

Where do I go to sign up?

Just log on to the Nintendo World Report forums and post that you want to sign up for the game in this thread before August 10th, 2019.

I like how this game actually has good Boss fights. It's something I feel like 2D Zelda games generally struggle with, with many of the boss fights the game's have ending up being pretty hit and miss overall.

I appreciate that this game actually addresses my biggest issue with Chrono Trigger which is it's dungeon design. Chrono Trigger's dungeon areas often devolve into running through a series of hallway areas and triggering the enemy encounters that the game rigs you to have to go through. It feels kind of nitpicky on my part but I feel like it's something that Cross actually improved on.

That forest/beach area where you hunt the lizard things at the beginning of the game had some unique puzzles that you had to complete to corner the little lizard things, that cave you go through early on branches out to a little optional area with some neat loot and an optional boss fight, and just to get into Viper Manor I had to scale a Cliffside while avoiding falling rocks and deal with an actually decent and brief stealth segment that has you dodging searchlights. It's a massive improvement on one of Chrono Trigger's few weaknesses.

Nintendo Gaming / so how about that Terraria game.

I picked it up on Switch. It's a stupidly addictive game and I absolutely adore it.

1183
That's just a regular Saturday night for me.

1184
What could possibly go wrong?

1185
I'm on vacation! In as... are there any worthwhile characters in Skyrim?

Super Mario Bros 2 should be higher.
I agree. Lost Levels is fantastic fun.

As far as visually impressive 3DS games special mention has to be given to Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate when played on a new 3DS. On a regular 3DS the game has a nice soundtrack, incredible sound design, and a pretty strong 3D effect but the new 3DS offers the game an uncapped framerate that usually hovers around 40ish frames a second (It cannot be overstated how much that little bit of extra fluidity adds to the game) and some rather impressive higher res texture work.

Xenoblade 3D is also really impressive on the 3DS. I mean shocker, the Wii game that launched with character models that looked like they came from an early 3DS game looks pretty decent on a 3DS, especially combined with Xenoblade's sense of scale, but it's honestly still nothing short of impressive.

1189
Welp, guess that's settled than. Best of luck with your new post Mr. "Totally not a dupe account"

To be clear this was the PM I sent to Insanolord on the matter yesterday.

Quote
I should be clear with my custom title: it's just this weird almost double standard thing that I find kind of find amusing. If you want to give me Mod powers I'll take them and nuke a few spambots but honestly I don't necessarily care enough either way. If anything wait a week or two because I kind of really like that custom title and getting mod powers would ruin the joke.

Speaking of ruining the joke though. :ph:

If they're gonna do it this year, alongside Pokemon, I would think an August/September reveal would be the way to go, with a November release.

Or, you know, **** me. Announce it right now.

**** me too, in another thread last night I made the statement it would be revealed after the holidays with a Spring release so they could still milk this holiday season from the original design. So we both need to start eating some hats I suppose.
Don't you mean cats?

So wait, there's no output for a TV at all? That's kind of surprising.

1193
I'm assuming I can announce this now so I'll do it: As some of you may have noticed I am now a contributor for Nintendo World Report. This means I have the ability to post content to Nintendo World Report itself. I have received permission to use the site to promote both Mafia 81, and all future games, including ones I do not actually host. The reason for this is twofold, firstly to potentially expand the playerbase but the second (and I believe most important one) is that Forum Mafia is one of the Nintendo World Report community's oldest traditions. We're honestly long overdue for some representation on the site itself.

However we have to do a bit of work to introduce this to a wider audience. Not everyone knows what Forum Mafia is or why they should play it, but you guys do. I am planning to begin work on a piece that celebrates the past 80 games and includes player testimonials. If you wish to contribute to this than please post a reply below: Here are some prompts to help get you started.

1. What are one or two of your favorite memories of Mafia games from Nintendo World Report?

2. Why would you recommend trying Mafia for someone who hasn't played it before?

I'll pick a few posts that I like to be featured in the article and a link to this thread will be provided for those interested in reading more player testimonials to check out. This thread is in a sense part of the article I'm writing for the site so if I see any kind of derailment or if something is posted here that would not be appropriate to post on the Nintendo World Report front page than it will be removed. Any questions or concerns will go here though.

1194
That's actually an interesting question you've asked there...

1195
Oooh, that's a good one, especially since apparently anyone who gets soul trapped ends up in some weird purgatory.

1196
Things picked up for me all of a sudden so I haven't had time to get a rules and roles thread started. I decided to have the game set in Markarth and have the flimsy excuse for a story be loosely based on the quest, "The Forsworn Conspiracy." I'll get this stuff sorted and a rules thread up in the next few days though.

Yeah, I can't resist this game any longer. It's so good!

1200
I'd been planning to do this for a while but I felt like going ahead and posting a sign up thread to ride on the Thirsty Mage's Skyrim Episode.

The game will start sometime at the end of the month, it will use that majority rule, and I'll have a full rules list up soon on this thread.

I do want to encourage role-playing for this one. Skyrim is full of wonderful colorful characters that can easily be roleplayed even by people who haven't played the game. I'll try to come up with some suggestions for you all so contact me for info on that if you're interested.

All players are capable of casting votes in the day thread to determine which player will be eliminated from the game.

Townie roles
Townie roles win if every player who has a mafia or third party role has been removed from the game. If you have a townie role your best course of action is to ally yourself with other players to form a so called townie Alliance that can hopefully seek out players with non townie roles so they can be eliminated from the game. Beware: Players with non-townie roles will likely attempt to infiltrate your townie alliance and influence it's actions for their own nefarious purposes.

Townie roles are not aware of each other's identities. It is on them to determine which players have townie roles and which players have roles that require them to be eliminated to ensure a townie win.

---

Eltrys: Detective - can have a single player investigated to learn their role during the night period.

Bothela: Doctor - the Town's Potion shop owner. Can protect a single player during the night period.

Adara; Child role: Cannot be killed by any means whatsoever. However any votes made by this player will not be counted unless there is a tie and they have cast a vote that would normally break the tie, or if the vote they cast creates a majority large enough to end the day period entirely.

Markarth citizen: standard townie role. Can message the host to have a vote they cast during the day period count for double. This ability can only be used once for the entirety of the game.

Mafia:
Mafia roles win if the number of players with mafia roles outnumber the number of people with living townie roles left in the game (excluding Adara) and if the player with the Dark Brotherhood Assassin role has been eliminated. The players know who each other are and while they collectively have the ability to remove another player from the game during the night period it is also recommended that they coordinate with each other during the day thread.

---

Forsworn Conspiracy leader: Can have a single player killed during the night period and if investigated comes up as a Markarth citizen.

Forsworn Conspirator 1: Gains the Forsworn Conspiracy leader's kill ability if the forsworn conspiracy leader is killed.

Forsworn Conspirator 2: Gains the Forsworn Conspiracy Leader's kill ability if the forsworn Conspiracy Leader and Conspirator #1 are killed.

the Killer

The killer can remove another player from the game much like the mafia can. There is only one killer which is both a blessing and a curse: It's a blessing in that it means you don't have any companions who, if killed, could lead other players to deduce your identity but it's a curse because there's only one of you so if you're eliminated there is no hope for remaining players to win the game for you. There is one Killer role planned for this game which is as follows:

---

Dark Brotherhood Assassin: Can remove a single player from the game during the night period.

---

Miscellaneous rules:

This game uses a variation of the 48 hour majority rule used in recent mafia games that features the following change to create more consistency in when the day will begin and when the day's scheduled endtime is.

Each day thread will begin at 11pm CST.

The night period will be required to last for at least 12 hours so if a majority is established tonight at 6pm CST for example the night period will last until tomorrow at 11pm CST. During the night period players with roles capable of submitting night actions may do so.

A majority is defined as the majority of currently living players casting a vote for the same person. If there are 9 players and 5 of those players choose to vote for Khushrenada than as long as that majority holds for an hour than the day period will end, regardless of when the day period was originally meant to end.

As mentioned if there is a tie than the person with the Adara role may send me a PM during the night period to break the tie.
