TalkBack / Pokémon Best Wishes Anime Getting Sequel
« on: May 12, 2012, 12:26:04 PM »

Looks like it's not just the games anymore.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30124

Pokémon Best Wishes 2, a new sequel series to the Pokémon Best Wishes anime, has been anounced in the latest issue of CoroCoro.

The new series will continue Ash Ketchum's journey through Unova, except with some fundamental changes. Mainly, more old Pokémon will appear in the series (similar to the upcoming Pokémon Black and White 2). Meloetta and the new Kami trio forms will also be making appearances. The next Team Rocket plot has been announced to feature Giovanni, and the return of Cynthia and Dawn will also be occuring to some extent.

The shift from Pokémon Best Wishes into Best Wishes 2 occurs in Japan on June 21, two days before the release of Pokémon Black and White 2.

What do Misty, new Pokémon forms, and something called Pokéwood have to do with each other? Read on to find out!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30123

Details on the new Kami trio forms, plot, returning characters, and more were released in the latest issue of CoroCoro.

In addition to the previously known information that Tornadus, Landorus, and Thundurus would be getting new forms, it has been revealed that these new forms are called "Sacred Beast Forms" (as opposed to their traditional form, now referred to as "Incarnation Forms").

Tornadus' form carries a new focus on Defense, Special Defense, and Speed. Thundurus has a focus on Special Attack, and Landorus focuses on increased attack. The legendary Pokémon will be number 198, 199, and 200 in the new Pokédex, and will not have a type change between forms.

As hinted at in yesterday's original leak, old Gym Leaders and Champions will be available for battle in something called Pokémon World Tournament. Confirmed opponents so far include Janine, Blaine, Lance, Blue, Misty, Giovanni, Volkner, Steven and Brock.

Also confirmed is that Pokéwood is the name of the movie making feature hinted at in previous trailers. Pokéwood allows the player to select a scenario and then make the movie through the appearance of various battles.

Finally, CoroCoro released minor details on returning characters. Cheren and Bianca do reappear. In the sequels, Cheren is a Normal-type Gym Leader, and Bianca gives the player a starter on behalf of Professor Juniper. With that said, Juniper is not returning as the professor in the new games, replaced instead by Professor Burnett, who also appears in Pokémon AR Searcher. Champion Alder will also be returning, and appears early on in the game tasking the player to follow him, but any further details are unknown. N has not been announced for reappearance, though the magazine stated that no one seems to know where N is.

Pokémon Black and White 2 come out on June 23 in Japan, with western release to follow later this fall.

Looks like there's more to the Kami trio than meets the eye.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30118

New forms for legendary Pokémon Tornadus, Landorus, and Thundurus were revealed in the latest issue of CoroCoro magazine.

Tornadus looks much like the bird creature silhouetted in The Pokémon AR Searcher shown at the most recent Nintendo Direct, and apparently, both Landorus and Thundurus undergo major aesthetic changes. The original leaker also states that Thundurus and Landorus are exclusively captured in Pokémon AR Searcher (and then transferred to Black and White 2), however, this is unconfirmed.

The original person to leak the scans stated that, also in the issue, Brock, Giovanni, Cheren, and Bianca are featured (with Cheren being a gym leader), and that Pokéwood (the movie theater seen in the trailer) replaces musicals in the game. The leaker also mentioned that there is a facility in the upcoming sequels where leaders from previous games appear, such as Lance, Blue, Misty, Steven, and Volkner.

As of right now, none of this (outside of the existence of new forms) has been confirmed, but we will update the article as more information becomes available.

To summarize: no, yes, and maybe.

The Pinball Arcade has been given release details for Wii, Wii U, and 3DS on the game's official Facebook page.

In regards to a Wii version, developer FarSight Studios stated that "Unfortunately, the Wii isn't powerful enough to run Pinball Arcade," but concerning a Wii U version, FarSight is "very excited about the Wii-U and hope to release as close to the launch of the platform as possible."

The studio also spoke to the uncertainty of the title's future on 3DS.

"We have a plan to get the performance we need out of the 3DS to run the ROM emulation, however some R&D is needed before we know for sure whether it will work. The 3DS version is on hold until we can invest the time and resources into this R&D."

TalkBack / Wii U to Have $300 Price Tag, Simultaneous Tablet Play?
« on: May 11, 2012, 12:36:30 AM »

Two tablets might not be out of the question.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/30111

A Global TestMarket survey may have revealed new Wii U tablet functionality and a tentative $300 price tag, as reported by GoNintendo reader Porygon.

In one question on the survey, the question is asked: "How likely are you to purchase Wii U if it cost: $299.99?", potentially suggesting a general pricing range.

In addition, a series of pictures showing off gameplay, Netflix, and sports game features was revealed, and one pictures appears to show gameplay between either two Wii U tablets or a tablet and a Wii remote. If it is the former, it will be contrary to previous suspicion that only one Wii U tablet will be playable at a time.

For the record, Other M is not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination. I actually think it's rather good. Hell, it's not even the worst Metroid game. Prime Hunters has it beat HARD in that department.

"You're a rookie tennis player. Go play random people until you eventually go to the Mario World."
This isn't even on the Super Smash Bros. level of storytelling. If that mode doubled the length of the game, I would not finish it.

Playing this game made me realize that I believe people who crave this RPG mode so much look back on it with rose-colored glasses. They basically gave you the gameplay from that mode and removed the unnecessary dialog, which I guess some people dug.
I SERIOUSLY disagree with that. SSE was Mario Kart levels of bad single player, if not even more boring. Power Tour was fun and had a really fun story. Was it cookie-cutter content? Yup. No question. But at least it actually was content. Oh, and having generic people I don't care about doesn't bother me, considering that's how I look at every single Mii. Even my own. And as far as I'm concerned, Luma is just as stupid a character choice as a nameless person.

While you make a good point on the upgrades and stuff, my personal reasons for wanting an RPG mode were to have a story of some kind to add 4-5 enjoyable hours to the 4-5 or whatever you already played.

Taking it out streamlines the general mechanics, but still removes the cookie-cutter plot that would have been pretty enjoyable regardless. Whatever you want to call it, I disagree that its inclusion would have made no difference.

TalkBack / Sakurai: No Plans for Kid Icarus Sequel
« on: May 10, 2012, 12:15:00 AM »

Fans should not lose hope, however.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30093

A sequel to Kid Icarus: Uprising is not in development or planning stages, says director Masahiro Sakurai.

In an email interview with IGN, when asked "if he and his Project Sora team had created such a rich, lasting universe so that it could easily be returned to in future projects," Sakurai said "If by ‘lasting universe’ you mean to ask if there's a sequel, the answer is no.”

Sakurai further elaborated that the decision was made “because we pushed a lot into the game in order to let people have this short yet deep experience, but the novelty of that would likely grow thin in the next game. For now, my thought is that perhaps we'll see someone else besides me make another Kid Icarus in another 25 years.”

TalkBack / Metroid Fusion
« on: May 09, 2012, 08:42:38 PM »

In honor of the most recent NWR Game Club, Alex takes a look at the canonical sequel to Metroid: Other M.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/extralife/30078

I suppose my memories of Metroid Fusion go back to about 2003, when an eight or nine-year-old me received a Game Boy Advance SP and a trip to the mall around my birthday, the purpose of which was to allow me to pick out any single game I wanted. Having bought Pokémon Ruby earlier that day, I went into KB Toys and picked out an interesting game I'd played at EB Games a few months prior: Metroid Fusion.

Fusion continues the series' 2D legacy to great effect. In typical Metroid fashion, Fusion is an action-adventure platforming game, taking place in a large area that slowly expands as Samus gains power-ups, which permit entry to new locations. Power-ups include things like the Plasma Beam, temperature-resistant suits, and bombs that allow destruction of certain, normally inaccessible walls. Samus obtains these items through direct download in the station's many data rooms and by defeating bosses. Unlike other Metroid games, power-ups aren't simply gained through a single victory: after defeating a boss, Samus is forced into a second fight with a hovering Core-X organism, which requires several hits to take down, making the power-up available.

My original playthrough of Fusion was a mess. I had no idea how to check mission objectives (so I was just exploring until something happened), I skipped through the (initially) terrible and confusing story, and overall I sucked hard. Bosses took multiple tries, and simple enemies would kill me with embarrassing frequency. Eventually, I simply used Action Replay to give me max upgrades and health. That worked well for a while until I ended up stuck once more. I threw up my hands and, for the next nine years, remained convinced that what I slogged through was a difficult and confusing mess. To further state how terrible I used to be at video games: Metroid: Zero Mission took me over 20 hours to finish, and that's with a pretty insubstantial item collection rate.

For this reason, I didn't even consider touching Fusion when the game was released as part of the Ambassador program. I had my poor memories, and I was happy to leave them as such. But after I played Other M, things changed. The story, though poor, was mostly understandable, and the game was supposedly more a prequel to Fusion than the sequel to Super Metroid. That intruiged me. When I beat Other M a week before writing this, I thought I would pop open my "We're sorry" ROM of Fusion just to take a look.

When I first started up a new save file, it was weird. That unskippable wall of text was now interesting and said things I found myself wanting to read. The story connected incredibly well to Other M, and one could see how Samus' character had a terrible personality long before that Wii game.

The gameplay was far more impressive than I remember, but far easier, too. In two sittings, I'd gotten past the point where, in my original playthrough, I was stuck while invincible. This was accomplished in about an hour and a half! I especially loved how frequently power-ups are obtained in the game, which routinely changes up the gameplay. The story continued to develop, and Other M's continuity to the series—from the dried up Ridley to Nightmare's return to Adam Malkovich's character—is downright eerie. In fact, I would go as far as to say that Metroid Fusion feels more like a cool WayForward sequel to Other M than Other M is the shaky prequel to Nintendo R&D 1's Fusion.

The bosses are also particularly great, with tons included. More importantly, the SA-X, Samus' doppelgänger and the main antagonist of Fusion, is genuinely menacing, and its entry into a room admittedly drudged up actual fear in me. The bosses themselves range in difficulty, from terribly easy to somewhat brutal. If you don't know the strategy to beat the final boss, expect some frustration—a whole lot of it.

When I beat the game (at just under four hours, though my Activity Log claims 8.5), I was so glad that my perception of this game could be broken, and that something fairly antagonistic to my younger tastes became an experience I really treasured. Does it have its flaws? Definitely. The fact that bosses follow with monotonous Core-X fights every single time bothers me quite a bit, as does how progressing the story requires feeling around individual rooms a bit too much. All in all, though, Metroid Fusion is a great game, and if you haven't played it yet, in the words of Reggie Fils-Aime, "What's wrong with you?"

TalkBack / GameStop Refusing Spirit Camera Trade-Ins
« on: May 08, 2012, 04:17:54 PM »

Isn't this so infuriating?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30079

GameStop will not allow trade-ins for Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, as reported by NintendoLife.

The move was made in regards to the game's reliance on a book included with the cartridge. Any tampering with the book, whether it be a total disappearance of or destroyed pages, would likely result in game progress becoming impossible. To prevent such situations, GameStop has issued a total refusal of trade-ins for the game.

The creative director claims that it happened out of coincidence.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30060

DreamRift's involvement in Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion was the result of "everything [aligning] more perfectly than we could have imagined," said Creative Director Peter Ong in an interview with NintendoLife.

The involvement with the studio started after finishing Monster Tale, and the studio was interested in the idea of creating a 3DS game where the player could paint or draw objects on the bottom screen, which would "then change into beautiful images that become an interactive part of a game-play environment." After this, DreamRift, who also made Henry Hatsworth, began talking to different publishers, like Disney Interactive, who the studio had a "great relationship with."

Coincidentally, Disney was already interested in bringing Epic Mickey to 3DS, with top priorities going towards creating a high quality game and a unique experience unlike the console versions.

As it turns out, "the central mechanic that we had been prototyping was a great fit already for the idea of bringing Disney Epic Mickey to the 3DS, since in the console version, the core mechanic involves empowering the audience to control Mickey and paint objects into reality within your interactive environment."

TalkBack / Pokémon Black and White 2 to Use Global Link
« on: May 05, 2012, 08:18:47 PM »

The pre-existing website will also be updated in the coming months.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30058

Global Link will be compatible with Pokémon Black and White 2, as reported by Serebii.

In addition, new features will be added to the website in the upcoming months. A rebrand of the Battle Union has been confirmed, alongside confirmation that the Dream World will be making a return to the upcoming sequels. Furthermore, the time cut-off between sessions will reduce from 24 hours to 20 hours. New areas will also be added, one of which is named Cool Hole.

It was also announced that a new Global Trade Station feature will be added to the new update, allowing players to check history of GTS usage as well as various statistics. The records for GTS and GBU will now be reported through a Report feature.

The update has been reported to have a new special feature for those owning both Black or White as well as Black 2 or White 2, though details on such a feature are currently unknown.

TalkBack / Talking Pokémon with Serebii
« on: May 04, 2012, 04:28:22 PM »

We talk with the Serebii.net's head honcho to discuss humble beginnings, time commitments, and the upcoming sequels.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/interview/30041

If you like to keep up to date on Pokémon news, there's a good chance you have heard of Serebii. Running the website Serebii.net, Serebii (also known as Serebii Joe) has been doing coverage of the franchise for over a decade, compiling information about related games, movies, anime, trading cards, and more. With this in mind, we chatted with Serebii to talk about how his website started, expanded, and flourished.

Nintendo World Report (NWR): First off, we were wondering if you would give us a brief background on the creation of the website.

Serebii Joe (SJ): It originally just came about during boredom at school during a lunchtime. I recently got into Pokémon and figured that creating a site would be a fun thing to do. It was originally just one of those generic sites seen at the start of the century on things such as Geocities, but eventually grew to what it is now.

NWR: When looking into the history of your website, we noticed that your website outlived many other Pokémon websites starting in the late 1990s. Why do you think that is?

SJ: I think part of the reason is that those sites died out. When my site was small, there were loads of huge sites, akin to the large sites of today, but they eventually all died out and left a void. My site was up and coming and just started getting more popular. We covered the Japanese side of things a lot more than the rest, and that's what brought people to it originally. Add to that my commitment and it just keeps going. That said, there were times where the site did collapse and people thought it was dead. In 2002 and 2003, there were major periods of downtime on the site causing it to be inaccessible for weeks on end.

NWR: Is this mainly a solo project, or do you have full staff members as well?

SJ: For the most part, it is purely me. I do have some assistance here and there with a couple of people who help me with translations when my own knowledge isn't up to scratch. We have someone who covers the Manga for us and one who does the Pokémon of the Week. I do have others help me out here and there should the situation dictate it, but it is pretty much my baby.

NWR: How do you get news and other data faster than just about everyone else? I mean, most websites, including ours, ends up sourcing most Pokémon news back to you when all is said and done.

SJ: It's really mostly due to timing. Most of the time, when there's news from Japan, America is asleep. However, I'm not situated in America so when news comes from Japan, I'm usually awake. When I know there's news coming, such as with the Pokémon Smash updates, I typically have an update prepared with a template and just fill in the blanks the second it airs so I can provide the information to the west the fastest possible. It just really depends on the situation.

For game coverage, however, it's a completely different monster. I typically manage to get the game on release day thanks to expensive delivery. From there, I just lock myself away from the real world for a while and just play the games and write about them as fast as my hands let me. It's hard work, but it's worth it.

NWR: How much time do you devote to Pokémon daily, whether it is games, news, or anything related to the franchise?

SJ: It completely varies. In time of new game releases, it can be 24 hours while I play through the game, but in other times where there's no news due or anything, it's minimal with just me checking my phone for news and occasionally playing the games should I be bored.

NWR: How did your forums develop into the mammoths they are today?

SJ: It's mostly due to the site. The site is very popular and so people flock to it and thus the community. It offers a place for people to find Pokémon to trade for so people will want to do that. It's just about the community really and what they provide.

NWR: Do you keep any contact with Game Freak or Nintendo? If so, what kind? Anything you can talk about?

SJ: I don't really have much contact with them. I get press releases and everything sent, but not really in periodic communication with any of their representiatives.

NWR: What is your favorite game in the franchise? Why?

SJ: That's an incredibly hard question. For main games, it'll have to be Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. They have all the features of the previous games and are the first to include a substantial story. Spin-off wise, that's a whole different thing. Each spin-off has got a lot to offer, but I'd have to say Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs. It was just a joy to play.

NWR: And, to close on a more modern note, how do you think Pokémon Black and White 2 are shaping up?

SJ: I think that they're going to be awesome. They're bringing a whole new thing to Pokémon in that they're direct sequels. It's shaking up the whole pattern people were expecting with the games and I am excited to see what comes from them.

TalkBack / Bird Mania 3D Review
« on: May 03, 2012, 06:39:27 PM »

Lacking fun and substance, it seems that the cheapest 3D eShop game may also be the worst.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/30042

Originally priced well below any other 3D eShop game, Bird Mania 3D brings back memories of the cliche phrase "you get what you pay for."

A constantly moving side-scroller, Bird Mania pushes players forward as they avoid trees, dash through enemies, and build points by collecting stars and popping balloons. As the player gains more distance, the game speeds up, making collecting and avoiding much more difficult. It's a high-score-building arcade-style game; so basically, you keep playing until you get hit by an enemy or a tree and subsequently die.

Unfortunately, beyond that, there isn't much to it. This might be unfair to say about such a cheap game, but the artificial difficulty only comes in the game speeding up and provoking a loss of focus, no doubt furthered by the unimpressive-yet-distracting 3D. Bird Mania simply does not give a feeling of accomplishment, or even fun, for doing well.

I was originally impressed when I saw that this game had a story mode. However, it's not a "story mode" per say, but rather a mode that coincidentally has story in the title. The difference is that in the latter, it’s acceptable to include no gameplay in the mode, and to instead include game credits and a disconnected slideshow explaining the plot in a few sentences before kicking the player out into the main menu. If that wasn't bad enough, the actual text likely wasn't even edited before publishing, containing strange uses of grammar and unnecessary capitalization. Here's one example: "Mojo overslept and has to Begin a crazy chase over fellow Birds". Don't worry; you have about as much context as I do. If anything, the plot, involving Mojo oversleeping and having to find his friends in Africa, actually worsens the experience of the game once you realize the horribly depressing truth that the game itself only ends when Mojo falls to his death (confirmed with an unmarked "R.I.P." tombstone after each finished round).

Outside of the "story" and the main mode, there are achievements, tasking the player with killing a certain number of enemies in a round or getting a specific amount of stars during the day. The shame with these achievements is that they simply exist, and actually obtaining them doesn't seem to do much for the actual gameplay outside of a check mark next to the achievement. Without incorporating the social aspects of Xbox Live or the ability to unlock content, such a mode feels silly, useless, and out of place. The achievements in Bird Mania are more difficult than the game is enjoyable. I spent 30 minutes trying to get one achievement, done so not out of addictiveness, but rather feeling the need to discover whether the fun of this game was somehow hidden underneath the tasks. They aren't. There's also a high-score board, but it's not an online one, so it’s not terribly interesting.

Bird Mania 3D is not a fun game. It is repetitive, lacks the addictiveness of other high-score-focused affairs, has an insult of a story-focused mode, contains no substance outside of a basic mode, and does nothing to convince the player that a good purchase was made. That's all there is to it.

Well, at least there's PiCTOBiTS...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30018

3D Classics: Urban Champion, Art Style: PiCTOBiTS, Snowpack Park, and Eco Shooter: Plant 530 are now available as May's downloadable Club Nintendo Rewards.

On the 3DS, Urban Champion is a simplistic one-on-one fighting game originally released on NES. On DSiWare, PiCTOBiTS is a mixture of puzzle games and NES properties. Both games cost 150 coins and both purchases are exclusive to 3DS owners.

The other two games, Eco Shooter and Snowpack Park, are exclusive to Wii owners. Snowpack Park is a fusion of simulation and mini-game-collection, which costs 150 coins to download. The other title, Eco Shooter, is a first-person shooter tasking the player with saving the world from an alien invasion, and costs 200 coins.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Release Dates Get Updated at Investors Meeting
« on: April 30, 2012, 07:00:09 PM »
Actually, the Wii is doing absolutely terrible with game releases right now. As previously stated, Pandoras Tower is not actually confirmed yet. At all. DQ X will be localized of course, but I'm pretty sure that hasn't been confirmed either.

That leaves us with:

The Last Story
NPC Pikmin 2
Kirby 20th Anniversary Collection

New Play Control should have came out looooooong ago when it came out in EU. That is not impressive. That is just painting Nintendo's laziness to be a good thing.

Kirby 20th can be anything, and we have no idea what anything is. My guess is that we're looking pre-Gamecube and no handhelds, but that's just a guess. And if I'm right, I don't think that's great at all.

The Last Story will be pretty good, but again, should have come out earlier.

I never said that this was the worst ever in forever based on a console about to die. I just said that it isn't a good time to be the Wii right now, and I don't think the Wii would be proud of how it's doing in 2012 either. Abstracts can have opinions of some kind, and I gave mine.

Not many details were shown, but we finally have some really good footage of two new routes.

During the footage, the legendary Pokémon Keldeo was shown fighting against Sewaddle in a new route as well as Growlithe in a new route surrounded by multiple towers and raised platforms connected by bridges. In a seperate double battle, Magby, Manemite, Koffing, and two Sunkern were taking part.

Not much other information could be taken from the episode, but it has been revealed that Keldeo is #298 in the updated Unova Pokédex, and that the Pokémon summary screen now looks slightly different to the one in the original Black and White.

A release date schedule for notable upcoming 3DS, DS, and Wii games was released by Nintendo during the recent investors meeting.

In Europe, the only real changes from the previous January release schedule are the addition of Project Zero 2: Wii Edition and updated release dates for Pandora's Tower (already released on April 13) and Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise (July 6). In the United States, the only Wii release mentioned is the already released Xenoblade Chronicles. In Japan, the release date changes of note are the Animal Crossing Fall 2012 release date, a summer release for Onitore on 3DS, and the addition of the previously announced Just Dance Wii 2.

The most notable information comes from the launch dates for Animal Crossing and Paper Mario. Although Paper Mario is given a 2012 Japanese release and Animal Crossing is set for this fall, Europe and the United States both have TBA listed under both games' releases. In the last investor's meeting in January, both games were listed in the same manner. Luigi's Mansion 2, on the other hand, is listed as a 2012 release.

I can attest to these bugs, maybe.
I'm skipping around and my VLC won't have any of it. Just gets stuck on the 32nd minute. That's the MP3, btw.
