Soooo... I'm hearing more and more about the Wii U being, essentially, on-par with current gen offerings. What's the consensus on this? How do you feel about the console if this is the case...?

Battery extension, and not being unwieldy as all-hell: definite plus.

Maybe disproved.

I think that Nintendo won't be selling tablets separately either, at least until games that support two tablets come out. That means the only way for casuals to get "the new Wii peripheral" will be to buy the console itself- then they'll see.

3230
While the devs would be a big draw, I don't see why Take Two being involved is such a big question.

I'm starting to notice that. I like it, because bad topics can sometimes change to good ones! Yay!

When did this become about game localization and not about bitching about the Wii U...?

Oh, please tell me that the whole "bitching about the Wii U" thing is becoming old...!

...These boards are so sad nowadays.

And remember, the indie developer of today could be the awesome third party developer of tomorrow.

However, this is pretty awesome news, if true.

3234
If Watch Dogs comes out on the Wii U, I want the protagonist's in-game tool to be a Wii U gamepad, not a smartphone.

3236
I doubt they'll be selling Wii U gamepads separately from the console at launch, or for a while after. If it's the face of the console, they'll sell it with the console only, so the people wanting "the new Wii peripheral" will have to take note and realize that it's not just a peripheral.

3237
People have to remember there's a reason why Nintendo is launching the system with NSMB U, Wii Fit U and Nintendo Land.  These are all sequels or spiritual sequels to some of the Wii's most popular games that sold over 20 million each.  Most of the people who who bought the Wii is guaranteed to be interested in at least one of these games.  Well when they go to buy one of these this holiday they'll find out the Wii U is a new system.

Or they'll get home and wonder why their Wii isn't playing NSMB U and Wii Fit U, call the Nintendo hotline and hear Iwata laugh at them.
Very astute. And they have Pikmin 3 to satiate the people who don't like these titles. Even though each of them is looking pretty nice, even from a "casual" standpoint. I really think Nintendo's trying to make every game have a little bit more "gamey". Wii Fit U, Nintendoland...

*Sigh*

I'm googling Captain Rainbow now.

Quake and Goldeneye really shouldn't be compared with each other. One's an arcadey twitch shooter, while the other is Goldeneye. Go and play the original Deus Ex and tell us you also hate that game. I know I definitely couldn't get into it after playing it two years ago, and it's the same reason you can't play Goldeneye.

No one's bloody patient enough to figure **** out for themselves these days. End! We've all been babied through incredibly pretty-yet incredibly non-interactive FPS games for the past decade and it's sent the genre way back. But that's my opinion, and obviously sales for those select few explosive set piece-driven shooters are through the roof, but whether or not they're successful due to ease of play or merely the appealing action sequences is anyone's guess.

The original A Boy and his Blob is totally a **** game compared to Super Mario bros.!!! Accessibility, right? Trying to make a game as appealing to on-lookers at a first glance as possible. Quake is incredibly easy to pick up and get in to, where Goldeneye needed those two old words no one uses anymore, learning curve.

Nintendo has mentioned many 'o times recently--as recently as a week ago when referring to the WiiU Zelda in fact--that they're trying to make their games as accessible as possible. No learning curves!!! Great for you, someone who grew up in such a time, but for the rest of us? It sends shivers down our spines, as we find sticking with complex games with layers of depth rewarding when digging deeper. Most people are just happy with runnin' and gunnin' though, yay. -___-

WALL OF TEXT OVER.
tl;dr Back in my day, etc...
Learning curve and difficulty curve are not the same thing.

As for his whole Goldeneye debate- it revolutionized shooters on consoles. There's nothing else that needs to be said at this point. It was a pretty magical expereince for the people who first got it when the system was in its heyday, and that's not nostalgia. Its game design and addictive multiplayer quality made is likeable and successful. Now, does it hold up today? Probably not, from a graphical and even a gameplay standard. But it was the tits back then.

I enjoyed it when it first came out. It was certainly more engaging than the five-minute online shooters of this day and age.

Just makes me sad there wont be an HD monster Hunter :(.

But I understand why they don't want to do it. They seem to be about building up partnerships more often. That and Im sure they understand they can't out bid Microsoft at least.
They don't want to do HD Monster Hunter? I needs a quote...
I believe they are actually working on an HD upgrade of Monster Hunter Tri.  Maybe he thinks that because they are only doing an HD upgrade, they aren't planning to do a proper PS3/Wii U Monster Hunter.
Really? Huh. That's disappointing. But we do have 4 on the way.

I want new special abilities! The super jump, rapid fire, and extend hover were good, but the super jump kind of negated the need for extend hover. Give me something new!

AWWWWH YEEEEEAH.

If this had been a Gameboy game, it probably would have been my favorite. Hell, even though it's a eShop title, it's one of my favorite games on the 3DS.

All I know is, they sure as hell didn't use the linear curves for any of the console games in Super Mario 3D Land, because the jump mechanics in that game are next-to-stupid.

oh yeah Mario Galaxy looks great, i had forgot about that. I wonder how scalable that engine is? As in being scaled up?
Well, considering it's likely based on the SuperMario64 engine, I'm going to say pretty damn scalable with some tweaking for feature sets.
I wonder if it really is largely based on the 64 engine. I'd be quite impressed if it was- I mean, 64 had great physics and all, but if they kept persistent with that engine up until now... come to think of it, I've never really felt like the control in Sunshine or Galaxy or were much different from 64...

Off-topic (but what isn't? This threads about Zombi U), I enjoy how pretty much all Wii U discussion bleeds into every topic on this board.

CHOZO! Stop being such a grouch!

Nintendo's message was: we're tightening up our announcements because we want to keep people continuously interested in our lineup. Here's what's coming out before the end of the year though!

I felt kinda gypped that our top two 3DS titles were announced at last E3 and covered again this year- they probably don't want to annoy people like that again.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What are your three favorite 3DS games and why?
« on: June 14, 2012, 09:16:16 PM »
1ST Kid Icarus: Uprising- If you got a problem with the controls, you're a bitch. The online is a blast, the gameplay ferocious and fun, and the story is lovingly crafted- plus, the game utilizes pretty much every 3DS function in some way, which is awesome. Overall, it seems like one of the only titles really BUILT for the 3DS, and it's an immensely entertaining ride.

2ND Resident Evil: Revelations- Yeah, this game is boss. As my first foray into the Resident Evil saga, I could not have chosen a better title, mixing the formula of the old with a little bit of the new. Immensely fun online co-op and single player raid mode, and a beautiful, atmospheric single-player campaign. Seriously, do yourself a favor and GET IT. Also, DAT CIRCLE PAD PRO!

3RD (TIE) Mighty Switch Force and Mutant Mudds- Both titles are lengthy, gorgeous romps for the eShop. Great mechanics are implemented in both, and Mighty Switch Force goes for however much mileage you get out of the title with its Par Times and difficult, but wonderfully appreciated DLC, and Mutant Mudds goes for being balls-to-the-walls tough with precision platforming and interesting level design (including 3D perspective plane jumping).

I refuse to include Ocarina, as it was mostly boring, and that atrocity known as Super Mario 3D Land was a summation of everything I hate about where the franchise has been heading in recent years.

Ian Sane:  You are talking from a Western perspective.  Here in South Korea, most families only have one TV, and one central living area in there place where the family converges.  The same is most likely true in Japan.

So yeah, where in the west we have spent more time and money on TV to the point we must have 2-4 tis in our houses...it isn't so in other countries.  Nor, should it be so.

That's what I figure.  But Nintendo wants to sell this thing in the West as well.  The American market is over twice the size of Japan's.  If the big selling point really only applies to the Eastern market, that's some pretty narrow thinking on Nintendo's part.  If they want to be a worldwide company they can't do things based entirely on how things are in Japan.  I think that's a problem with Japanese companies in general.
I think the concept works well enough as a family system to get western draw. It's not JUST the coffee table idea that is the draw- it's the gameplay mechanics, the connectivity, everything. Multiple accounts proves that a family aspect is being employed, and I think that most Wii U's will find themselves in the living room. That's not to say there won't be individual Wii U's floating around households, but its concept is very much computer-like, with the multiple accounts, ability to display a variety of media, and so forth. I don't think it's too narrow in its focus group.
