General Gaming / RE:PlayStation 3 will use Blue-Ray discs
« on: August 24, 2004, 05:02:12 PM »
Hewlett Packard and Dell have backed Blue Ray since before January of this year...  They plan to use it in their computers sometime at 2006 at the latest.  Another thing is, that the Blue-Ray Companies say that the production costs of Blue-Ray is going to be comparable to DVDs in mass volumes.  There are also already 10 companies making Blue-Ray recorders.

Final Fantasy is their most classic title...  And they made a sequel to Chrono Trigger back in August 2000.

Going by the Madden principle shouldn't it had been reviewed just as well if not better? Why does Madden deserve continuously higher scores while Nintendo deserves continuously lower scores? Both games follow the same principle yet one is chastised and the other praised- THAT'S what I call a double standard.

Obviously you don't read every review, especially for the sports games.  I used to think there weren't much changes to them at all, until I started reading every review (from multiple magazines and online sources) and I now realize they do alot year to year to make the games different and better.  Soul Calibur 2 got excellent ratings, it did not do alot more than Soul Calibur 1 either.  It was also released almost 3 years after the introduction of the PS2.  While Soul Calibur 1 was a LAUNCH title for the Dreamcast and was done so well it's still regarded as one of the best DC games...  ...  ...  ...

You seem to blatantly ignore the fact that Nintendo's sports games which are released in 2-4 year waves (not annually) don't receive criticism either and they make about the same amount of changes in them that EA does on a yearly basis for there sports games.  Why don't you talk about games EA makes that are not sports games, like MOH, Sim City, NFS, LoR, Bond, etc.  Those games get just as much criticism as any other companies games that are not sports games.

You say there is a double standard because you dislike EA because they make games that don't appeal to you and they're so successful doing it.  Let the hatred go, every successful company in the industry makes the industry stronger.  If games don't appeal to you, it doesn't mean they're garbage.

General Gaming / RE:1 Million People Are Using Xbox Live
« on: August 24, 2004, 02:04:35 PM »
But Xbox Live has alot more features, including a community that you can be in no matter what game you're using, instead of being restricted to just a single games players community.  To compare it to PS2 and say it's overpriced because it's $20 a year is ridiculous.

General Gaming / RE:Doom 3
« on: August 24, 2004, 02:00:32 PM »
Well you gotta think about it this way, if ID spent even more time on the multiplayer the game could very well have sold for $60 instead.  Also the game would've came out a couple months later too.  They were very excited in the interview for letting the modders do the multiplayer game even more justice, they've liked getting people to do mods since Doom 1.  And the multiplayer they did make themselves for Doom 3 atleast meets conventional standards as far as game types.  Atleast this way, with not spending another 2-3 months doing more multiplayer types, they can start on their next games earlier too.

« on: August 24, 2004, 01:55:43 PM »
No the only thing that needs to go well for it infact is if playstation 3 does half as well as playstation 2 has done, then in 2 years time the burners will be a couple hundred.  That doesn't even take into account if any computers use them, and it's looking like that will very well happen since alot of computer companies are already backing Blue-ray.  And that doesn't count if it gets used for tv and movie media as well.  So, they will definitely be cheap in 2 years.

More songs than any other EA title since 2002.  Yet, not one song I know of...  And barely any bands I've heard.  Guess I just don't like most new music?  Or is this soundtrack the pits? Burnout 3 ST

yep.  I believe it's really only about a killer launch and killer apps.  After that happens, you will gain the third party support, and don't lose exclusives, and get more killer apps.  People love the killer apps, the system sellers.  They increase the system base which in turn usually rings in most of the niche titles as well from developers.

I read in an interview ID said they weren't putting alot into the multiplayer because they wanted the fans to do it, because they know modders can make some amazing things.  It's easy when all they have to do is switch up whats already been completed by the makers.  Unless ofcourse it is a graphical mod or very complex.

It's a company, and like all companies they need to say things in their PR to it known they have done something well.  So, it's natural for them to make a comparison.  They did the smart thing.  I don't see $70 a year (That includes a new game and a headset microphone) as a ludicrous fee at all.  It's a very fair fee.  The game is 20 bucks atleast right there, and the microphone is another 30.  So people are paying 20 bucks a year for the best online service.  That's less than 2 dollars a month.  MMMORPGS are what I constitute as ludicrous, charging 12 bucks a month.  A fanboy isn't necessarily someone who plays a certain system, it's more so someone who defends another system or company like it's the holy grail.  I don't recall calling you a fanboy either.

calm down guys, the games have been out for years.  i think we should be happy they waited so long to port the games over.  they could have easily ported them years ago or even many months ago.  they were exclusive for far longer than it mattered.  since when does Sammy have a hatred to Nintendo?

The burners exist, but at a 3500 dollar price tag, no one is going to be able to burn them for atleast a few years, assuming blu-ray does become a big success and hits affordable levels.

They had them for 3000 months ago, so by next year they will be significantly cheaper.  In two years time, if things go well they could be a couple hundred.

Reader Reviews / Hot Shots Golf Fore
« on: August 23, 2004, 04:58:24 PM »
I first played Hot Shots on ps1, in a demo of HSG1.  I then bought Mario Golf N64, and enjoyed it alot.  I then bought Mario Golf TT, and didn't really play it much.  Now I preordered HSGF, and picked it up last wednesday.  And I must say this game surpasses all of the predecessors, easily.  It includes 34 characters, 15 courses, and oodles upon oodles of extras.  Mini Golf has returned for the first time since HSG1.  There is the 'rpg' system of gaining experience points and reaching new levels for your characters.  Also there is loyalty from your characters which develops as you use them over time.  All great things.  Then there is the shop, where you can buy new clubs, balls, and tons of more stuff.  The game supports 4 players via multitap.  And for the first time ever, online play.  The online play is easily the funnest online game I have ever played.  And I've played many.  You can take part in small tournaments where you take turns with upto 4 people.  Or you can opt to enter tournaments with upto 50 players!  Between each hole, you see the scoreboard, and how everyone is doing, and you can chat to eachother about how the hole went.  It's really flawless in execution.  Also is the inclusion of online rankings as well as weekly top 100.  The game also allows different options for each course that you can set both offline and online.  There is so much more great stuff I could say about this game, and I've forgotten to.  I say atleast try to rent it and put some hours into it, if not buy it for the very cheap price of $39.99.  It's the bargain of the summer, and the best game I've played in a long time.  NOTE: the reviews I've seen online don't do the game justice, IGN 8.8, Gamespy 3.5/5, they just seemed to expect way too much out of the title...  Heres the breakdown:

Graphics:  9
The characters look the same as they did in HSG3, but the courses have improved alot.  Now trees sway realistically to show you how the wind is, and are just as important as reading the HUD.  The ingame effects have improved alot too.

Sound: 9.5
The sound effects are great, spot on.  The characters voice overs are top quality, sometimes you'll encounter some that talk just a little too fast.  The music manages to even outshine the SFX, it's got catchy tune after catchy tune.  Especially like the Japanese music on the Samurai Course.

Control: 10
Perfect control, bar none.  Easy to learn, hard to master.  Great depth.

Lastability: 10
You'll be playing this game for years, if you have a network adapter.  And if you don't happen to go online with it, you'll still enjoy it for months.

Funfactor: 10
The most fun I've had with a game all year, easily.

Overall: 9.8

This is by far my favorite game this generation.  Kudos.

not surprising at all.  #1, the videogame industry is huge now.  #2, it's online for xbox now.  double standard?  no, there is no double standard.  it's all in the heads of fanboys.  As I've said before it's not in the nature of sports games to change drastically.  And when Nintendo releases sports games (in 2-4 year waves, not annually) they have made very little changes at all, and still don't get shat on either.  It's sports games...  they're different...

SWEET, Oakenfold music in a videogame!  Judging by his past efforts this should turn out absolutely perfect.  Don't worry about that whole "dance" thing, his music is more surreal than your avg dance crap.  Finally some good music choices by EA.

I doubt they wanted to spend the extra money for a battery in the cartridge just to save the players bankroll, furthermore since it's a budget title.  The password shouldn't have to be long either since it's just the players money.

That's a shame, because Lovecraft is better than 90% of anything you could play on your SP, and much better than the SP itself if you ask me.

Well that's your opinion ofcourse, personally I don't like to read novels.

The water jet in Mario Sunshine is NOT an original idea.  Just off the top-of-my-head, I can remember a game from *20 years ago* which used a water jet as its key component (Towering Inferno - Atari 2600).

So if anybody "stole" anything, it would be Nintendo.... from older games that you young folks have forgotten and/or did not know about.  Please remember that before you accuse others developers of stealing Nintendo's ideas.  Chances are, Nintendo's idea is NOT original.

Um, first of all I'm older than you.  Second I did not claim that Milo & The RN stole the water cannon idea from SMS, that's why I used "brackets".  Because Nintendo had said they were afraid the idea would be stolen, so I was merely referring to that.

I don't know about you guys, but I didn't think the games back in the NES era were too hard to beat.  Zelda 1 was a small challenge (took 1 week), Zelda 2 was harder but not that bad.  Then again I only had about 15 NES games when it was in its prime so maybe I just played them more.

General Gaming / RE:1 Million People Are Using Xbox Live

I did take a college stats class, and I enjoyed it.  You must not believe anything companies PR say then, not even Nintendo themself.  But you sure act like you do.  Don't be a hypocrite.  Let me ask you this, if you were Microsoft what would you have compared their Xbox Live user amount to?  I say yea that comparing to HBO and AOL isn't a perfect comparison but it's close enough, it's the best you could do for comparison.  Now why would Battlenet be good, when it's free?  Or why would the first MMORPG be good, when it's only 1 game, and a genre only a specific few like?  And if you're so sure that XBLive did not reach 1 million 3 times as fast as HBO, or AOL, prove it with some justifiable links.
