Nintendo Direct with lots of rhythm!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/famicast/29397

Happy "Love Day" everybody! JC, Danny, and Daan reconvene to talk about another Japanisation of a western holiday, the details of which may surprise you! Nintendo Direct, which may have been lacking in the megatons, did have quite a few tasty morsels worth talking about, including Nintendo's next world domination weapon - "evil" Dr. Kawashima! Listen in for the full rundown.

Rhythm action fans are well catered for (again) in this episode; Theatrhythm, Rhythm Thief and the demo of Hatsune Miku are all discussed. Looks like the 3DS is fast becoming the portable home of the genre! JC updates us with his progress in two extremely lengthy RPG/adventure games, one cost $50, the other was free, but both appear to be lasting the same amount of time!

Other tidbits include a full appraisal of Denpa Ningen (the eShop RPG starring Tingle look-a-likes), the state of the Japanese Nintendo Zone app, Purikura machines, and a large helping of DLC!

So grab a box of your friend-chocolates, apply your schoolgirl camera filter and you'll be ready for another crazy journey to Japan with the Famicast crew!

TalkBack / European Details from Nintendo Direct
« on: February 22, 2012, 09:20:21 AM »

European plans mostly to be confirmed!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/29355

Nintendo of Europe gave its fans a translation of the Japanese presentation with a couple of minor differences. The Dragon Quest Monsters game and Fatal Frame were left out and most content mentioned got a big ''European plans to be announced'' stamp on it, though there a few details that did stand out.

So is Fire Emblem confirmed for a 2012 release and will Mario Tennis Open be coming to Europe on May 25. Kingdom Hearts 3D will also release in 2012, though no exact details were given. In mid-March, Europeans will be able to download classic Game Gear games from the 3DS' Virtual Console on the Nintendo eShop and The Legend of Zelda fans should look forward to a little surprise on the Nintendo Letter Box very soon.

Finally, The Rolling Western will be available today to purchase, download and play.

UPDATE: Project Zero 2: Wii Edition is mentioned on Nintendo of Europe's Twitter feed! It is coming to the region it seems.

TalkBack / My First 3DS DLC Experience
« on: February 14, 2012, 02:43:29 PM »

We explore the inner workings of Nintendo's DLC set-up!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/29270

Yesterday we told you all about the first batch of DLC for Tobidasu Print Club Kiradeco Revolution, a photo booth application on the Nintendo eShop in Japan. The application has a range of 2D and 3D tools to make your own crazy photo creations. There are popping 3D backgrounds, a range of stickers and everything to make the image of your dreams or nightmares.

To access the DLC, you go to the collection section of the app and then to the parts shop, and it begins by scanning your SD card. All of your content is stored in this matter and it double checks to see if you have anything of note in your folders. Once it is done with the scanning process, you will find three sections. One for the shopping section, one for putting in specific 16-digit codes, and the last one is for opening an eShop overlay to add funds to your account. In the past you could only add funds through the Shop Channel on Wii.

By clicking the shopping button, you will see downloadable packs of stickers and backgrounds. In the app's case, each pack will set you back 100 Yen a pop. By clicking a certain item, a new eShop overlay appears giving you the usual purchase information like cost and block size. After giving a final okay your purchase will be confirmed and percentage bar will start to do its thing. It must be noted that this DLC can't be downloaded in the background and it will ask you to not turn off your system or remove the SD card. It isn't too much of an issue though, as the downloading speed is on par with downloading something small on the eShop. Once the progress is completed, the DLC will find its way into the game automatically and you will able to manage it through the DLC section of the memory settings.

The system seems from first impressions very solid and snappy, but we will reserve final judgement for when Theatrhythm Final Fantasy becomes available. Feel free to see it in action in the video below!

TalkBack / This Week in Europe Downloads - February 9, 2012
« on: February 06, 2012, 03:09:59 PM »

A brand new demo, a double Virtual Console update and burgers. That are this week's Euro downloads in a nutshell!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/29185

European gamers can look forward to six new downloads, ranging from a new 3DS demo to a Virtual Console game on both 3DS and Wii, hitting the various platforms this thursday.

On the Nintendo eShop, we begin our journey with a spanking new demo for Crush 3D! Crush 3D comprises over 50 levels of flabbergasting, fun-filled puzzles set over four stunning settings. Your job is to guide Danny safely to the exit of each level by crushing the perspective, along the way collecting up enough of his ‘lost marbles’ to open the exit gateway itself. Play the first few levels for free and decide if you want to jump further into Danny's crazy world.

Next to this slice of puzzle goodness, we have the Game Boy classic Kirby's Block Ball coming our way this week. This Breakout-like game requires quick reactions, as Kirby bounces off paddles on all four sides of the screen. Kirby is able to access a whole range of powers, including Burn, Spike, or Stone. You’ll need all the help you can get for the final showdown with King Dedede. You can download this gem for €3/£2.70.

Then we step over to the DSiWare side of things, where we see two new games that are ready to go. First off, there is Gaia's Moon from EnjoyUp Games. This quirky arcade game puts you in the role of Atreyu, where you need to help him avoid objects and reach the end of the goal in each of the six difficult stages. Next to this, there is a two-player option where you use just one Nintendo DSi or 3DS to play. Gaia's Moon can be downloaded for 200 Nintendo DSi Points on the DSi Shop or for €2/£1.80 on the Nintendo eShop.

The second DSiWare game is Crazy Cheebo: Puzzle Party from Cypronia. In this strategic puzzler, you must switch two objects to make a horizontal or vertical set of three or more objects of the same colour. A whole range of awards are up for grabs if you can match more objects up and create combos. The game contains colourful graphics, a Crazy Cheebo character, and lots of humorous videos. The game can be yours for 200 Nintendo DSi Points on the DSi Shop or for €2/£1.80 on the Nintendo eShop.

Finally we hope over to the Wii, where we have a new WiiWare and Virtual Console game to boot. On WiiWare side, there is BurgerTime World Tour from the folks over at MonkeyPaw Games. Enjoy over 20 burger-filled levels, each containing new obstacles that will keep you on your toes. The new 3D environments bring a whole new edge to this classic game, with the rotational axis allowing you to see through the cylinder, creating whole new elements for determining the fastest way to build a burger. Download this revamped version of the Data East classic this Thursday for 1,000 Wii Points.

We finish our download parade with the Wii's Virtual Console, where The King of Fighters '97 finds its way into the NeoGeo section of the service. King of Fighters ’97 is the fourth game in the King of Fighters series, once again allowing players to combat opponents with popular characters from Fatal Fury, Ikari Warriors, Psycho Soldier, Art of Fighting, and other titles. The character roster changes with every iteration and new characters in this 1997 title include Chizuru Kagura, Ryuji Yamazaki, Blue Mary and Billy Kane. Players can also choose between Advanced and Extra play modes to greatly alter the gameplay. Join the fight for 900 Wii Points!

Podcast Discussion / Episode 8: SAMURAI PIZZA THIEF
« on: January 25, 2012, 01:35:53 PM »

STOP THIEF! That guy's stylishly roller-skating away with an expensive cheese and tomato pizza!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/famicast/29072

Newly appointed Famicrew regular Daan Koopman join JC and Danny again as they talk all things Japan!

It's a very rhythmic episode this week, which starts off with some serious talk about Japanese gaming journalism, before Daan movies onto his latest import, Kiki Trick on Wii, a game that might be worth learning Japanese and finding a Japanese friend to play with! Danny then talks about his latest non-eShop purchase, Rhythm Thief R. Is it an accurate portrayal of Parisian life or a crazy anime / Ouendan inspired game that everyone should play? Give it a listen and find out! JC then finds a few things to bitch about with his Annual Gift Man present, Mario Kart 7. Not to knock the big guy with his choice, he just wishes the game was a little more... complete.

Final Fantasy Theatrhythm DLC crops up in news, which gives Daan and Danny the chance to talk about how much they love rhythm games. Let's just say Square-Enix's pockets will be pretty full in the next few months thanks to those guys!

The show wraps up with some forum questions being answered, topics include the PS Vita reaction, differences in gibberish and over-priced Japanese pizza! Stop by the Japan thread if you want to ask some questions of your own, or e-mail famicast@nintendoworldreport.com

So strap yourself in, grab your copy of Nintendo Dream - it's Famicast a go-go baby!

TalkBack / Kid Icarus: Uprising Coming to Europe on March 23
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:25:53 AM »

Plus new details on the Fiend's Cauldron!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/29066

Nintendo of Europe announced a March 23 release for Kid Icarus: Uprising, meaning it will release on the same day as North America.

The company also makes mention of the included stand, which means all three regions will get the peripheral packed in with the game. The stand will give gamers better control over the game and will give them, according to Nintendo, a new kind of gaming experience.

The press release below makes mention also of the Fiend's Cauldron. This option allows the player to adjust their desired intensity. The further the intensity increases, the more aggresive your enemies will become. For defeating these harder enemies, players will get rewarded with even more hearts and better equipment. Hearts are the fuel of Fiend's Cauldron, so levels must be overcame to even consider the option. If defeated, the player will lose hearts, meaning that intensity will be lowered automatically on your following runthrough.

In others words: run for your lives! The Wii Virtual Console is getting an update!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/28970

Ubisoft's Prince of Persia outings for the Super Nintendo and Game Boy Color will make their way to Nintendo's respective download services this Thursday.

The classic SNES version of the franchise marks the end of a 32 week absence of Wii's Virtual Console service in Europe. The game features 20 levels, plus several training levels which will put your platforming skills to the test. The Game Boy Color one on the other hand features 12 levels, but it is cheaper and is of course tailor made for on the go.

European gamers will be able to download SNES game on the Wii Shop for 800 Nintendo Points and the Game Boy Color one on the Nintendo eShop for €5.00.

TalkBack / Ace Combat 3D: Cross Rumble Impressions
« on: January 12, 2012, 07:16:37 PM »

An insultingly short affair with barely a good grip on the game.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/28947

Namco Bandai recently released a demo for Ace Combat 3D, a game that saw retail release a few months ago in Europe and North America, on the Japanese Nintendo eShop. I have yet to try the game and was hoping to pick up the Japanese release sooner or later, since it supports the Circle Pad Pro attachment. So I was pretty excited to download the demo to see how would the Circle Pad Pro controls work and what the game is all about. Unfortunately, the demo gives you neither to enjoy, and instead only gives you a five minute tutorial section.

The gameplay seems very solid and well put together, although in the short moments it lasts you barely get a good grip on it. It wants you to learn all the ropes of air combat, but it manages to forget that you want to learn about what the product actually offers. The demo itself is pretty straight forward and I felt that I knew everything after trying it twice.

What actually happens in the demo, though? You shoot every aeroplane twice, dodge them and go in their trail a few times with the Y-button. Once 10 planes have been shot down your mission has been completed. If you don't reach your target goal and finish everybody off in the time limit, the demo ends. You are thanked for playing it, and after that it reboots. The demo doesn't explain to you too much. Most of it is learned through a few pages of text you get before starting the mission, with occasionally offers a hint of which buttons are supposed to press during the mission.

The controls work really well. It seems to pick up the slightest movement very well with the Circle Pad and felt like I had full control over the plane. It uses the L and R buttons for braking and throttle, which was a bit hard to getused to, but felt like second nature over extended periods of gameplay. The visuals, in 3D especially, were great. The HUD really pops out at you and environments seem to be rendered well enough.

Despite the great visuals and controls, the demo itself is too limited and doesn't fully show off what the full game is about. The play sessions will last you barely enough to understand it and if you don't, well you are forced to start right back from the beginning. The demo also limits you to three play sessions, which makes even less sense considering the other demos that are out there. The high quality visuals and controls do still promise a great gameplay experience, but the demo barely shows off the full potential of the product. I still want to try the full game and I think newcomers are better off doing the same.

The hope for a European release is still alive.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/28935

Cave Story for DSiWare was sent off by Nicalis, only to be rejected for Europe once again. This news comes from the Twitter feed of Nicalis.

The independent developer says that they sent the build off to Nintendo in December, but they had a minor issue with the digital manual. Nicalis promised to try again this month.

Cave Story for DSiWare was released in North America more than a year ago and last November it saw a Japanese release.

Gaijin Games is indeed in posession of Wii U development kit and the studio is wondering about bringing their upcoming game to the platform. This comes from a Q&A video on the official blog of Runner2.

Go to your stationery and it should be at the very end of your list. If it didn't, then you haven't explored the application far enough. Hope it helps!

Also, thanks to everyone who participated so far. The response has been amazing and a drawing contest will be held later this week to celebrate it!

Because we love you too after all!

The Japanese got brand new piece of stationery through Swapnote/Nintendo Letter Box, thanks to a New Years message that was sent out to users. While it might seem you won't be able to get it, that isn't exactly the case. By sending a message with this stationery, North American/European players will get it unlocked in their version of the application.

This is where we step in to help! We have a Japanese code for you available, which you are completely free to add so that we can sent you the stationery. This code might also be used in the future for contests through Swapnote/Nintendo Letter Box to win a small prize. The friendcode is 1590-4901-5293.

As an additional bonus to this article, we have here for you the official QR code for Nikki, the helpful Mii from this very app for you to use and abuse.

We don't know all the details at the moment, but if true, the timeline is even more complex than usually imagined, featuring a trio of alternatives after Ocarina of Time. 3. Four Swords
4. Ocarina of Time

Podcast Discussion / Episode 7: ANNUAL GIFT MAN APPROACHES
« on: December 16, 2011, 12:49:05 PM »

The whole crew (plus one extra) assemble for an super-extended episode to ring in the new year!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/famicast/28712

As a fond farewell to 2011, the whole original Famicast crew of JC, Danny and Matt team up with Japan gaming aficionado 'NintenDaan' Koopman for an epic 3-hour Famicast!

First off is a taste of a traditional Japanese Christmas, listen and learn exactly how Santa AKA 'Annual Gift Man' enters the houses of Japanese children, despite the lack of chimneys.

New business covers all the big games you'd expect, plus Danny earns his middle name by spilling the beans on his latest eShop endevour, Sakura Samurai.

Daan gives the details on the lastest Taiko drum game, a Wii game that no one outside of Japan will be playing, despite the enticing commercials it has.

In Japan news that Miyamoto thing, the Circle Pad Pro and the 3DS system update all get a look in - just how many new hats and puzzle pieces do the guys have already?

Moving into the final hour of the podcast, JC tries to emulate TYP with his version of Radio Trivia, a segment that was planned as a backup for the live Telethon hour but was never used - until now!

Wrapping up, all remaining listener mail from the previous show is answered, topics include Animal Crossing, the future of Metroid, dual audio tracks and real live Tanukis!

Surprisingly, onsens are barely mentioned at all!

As always please send us interesting questions in preparation for the next show in the new year to famicast@nintendoworldreport.com

We'd like to apologise for the less-than-great quality of Matt Walker's audio track. A lot of time was put into improving it as best we could, and we will strive to make improvements for the next episode. We sincerely hope it doesn't affect your enjoyment of the show.
