TalkBack / Hiku Otsu Impressions
« on: November 06, 2012, 01:50:22 PM »

Mallo and his friends are back in Crashmo/Fallblox for even wackier adventures with blocks!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/32393

It seems not that long ago that I finished Hiku Osu (aka Pushmo, Pullblox) and felt fulfilled after playing many user generated levels. I had fun with the game, but ultimately there was no room for me to explore it further. Considering the original is still one of my favourite 3DS games, I had hope and enthusiasm going into the sequel, Hiku Otsu (aka Crashmo, Fallblox).

The game opens with a colourful animation of Mallo meeting Poppy, Papa Blox' grandniece. Poppy arrives in a big basket piloted by 100 birds. After a short introduction and some small talk, Mallo shows Poppy his special sumo stomp, but things go bad and he startles the birds. Feeling bad, Mallo starts his journey to gather all the birds to make sure Poppy can go home safely.

Hiku Otsu shares a lot of ideas with its predecessor, though it is also introduces many others. You still push and pull out various blocks to dismantle and reach the top of structures. With the introduction of gravity, however, the rules change. You can turn puzzles 360 degrees, and depending on how you move blocks, certain pieces fall to the ground. You can move blocks in all four directions, which makes it tougher to find the solution at times. Unlike the original, you can also now pull blocks onto the surface you stand on.

I began with a selection of tutorial stages, which explained the rules piece by piece, and afterward got to try the first few puzzles. These introductory stages can frustrate at first, though you now have the option to skip a level at your leisure without punishment. You’re rewarded if you finish a puzzle later, though, and you can only complete the story if you finish them all, so this decision makes sense. After the first set of regular stages, I encountered the first real mechanic in Hiku Otsu, cloud blocks. These blocks remain in the air even if something is placed on top of or under them.

In the original, you could speak to Papa Blox for information on various moves and gameplay mechanics, and while that option is still available, you’ll find new things the associated menu that pops up. The most important is a group of new training levels in which you learn the gameplay mechanics at a much slower pace. Here, you always have Papa Blox to assist you. This mode may benefit those who didn't play or had problems understanding the original, and helped me better understand cloud blocks. Under another option, you can watch various movies, as well as banter with the birds you have collected. You can set camera and audio controls here, as well as activate SpotPass. By doing so, you will receive additional puzzles from Nintendo for you to play.

Sadly, I haven't had much time to explore the game’s new editor. It seems functionally similar with a few new elements thrown in. The game offers three different save slots, so if you share your system with anyone else in your household or want to experience it all over again, you will have the option to. Finally, players can take in-game screenshots by pausing the game and pressing the X button. You can share these pictures, and view them in both 2D and 3D.

Hiku Otsu left a very good first impression on me, despite the higher difficulty and the large amount of new rules. The game has higher standards than Hiku Osu and it certainly doesn't shy away from challenge. Look for the western release of Hiku Otsu (or Fallblox and Crashmo, as it is called in Europe and North America, respectively), later this month on your local version of the Nintendo eShop.

TalkBack / South Korean Nintendo Direct Highlights Upcoming 3DS Games
« on: November 04, 2012, 10:38:28 PM »

Nintendo of Korea gets serious with their support for the platform.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32376

Nintendo of Korea highlighted some of the upcoming Nintendo 3DS games in a Nintendo Direct presentation specifically for South Korea. The presentation was lead by NoK president Mineo Koda, and was streamed live earlier in the week.

On the first-party side of things, Nintendogs + Cats, available since October 18, was the first game of the discussion. NoK highlighted some of the promotional spots for the title, and announced a campaign for free SpotPass content, the first batch of which should be running for the entirety of November.

After this NoK discussed Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, which will release on November 8. On the same day, Korean players can download Pokemon Dream Radar from their Nintendo eShop. It was also revealed that New Super Mario Bros. 2 will hit the region on December 6.

After chatting about games that are coming soon, the presentation moved on to titles of 2013. The first game on the agenda was Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which wasn't given any specific window. Footage was shown with fully translated imagery, so it is certainly in the works. Mario Tennis Open was next, which should be coming early next year. The same release window was given to Style Savvy: Trendsetters, though not many new details were given.

The discussion then move to the games of third-party publishers. Gon Paku Paku Paku Paku Adventure will be coming sometime in the near future, as well as a new version of MapleStory for the Nintendo 3DS. New footage and screenshots were shown for the MMOPRG adaptation, with a clear emphasis on much clearer and crisper visuals. Cooking Mama 4 was also shown, though it was given a vague 2012 release window.

Ubisoft will also be bringing a bunch of titles to South Korea, with Rayman 3D and Petz Fantasy 3D being the first, on November 28. Later in 2012, players can expect to get their hands on Rayman Origins and Rabbids: Travel in Time 3D. At some point in the future, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D will also be available.

Other games include Kokuga, the new game from Ikaruga director Hiroshi Iuchi (November 28);Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure (before the end of the year);LEGO Harry Potter 5-7, Spy Hunter, and LEGO The Lord of the Rings from Warner Bros.; Senran Kagura Burst from Marvelous AQL; Etrian Odyssey IV, Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, and Shin Megami Tensei IV from Atlus.; and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy from Square Enix.

You can watch the full Nintendo Direct presentation below.

TalkBack / SiNG Party Hitting Europe in Early 2013
« on: November 04, 2012, 09:18:19 PM »

Get swinging and dancing in the first moments of 2013!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32374

Nintendo of Europe announced that SiNG Party will be hitting the region on January 18, 2013. This information was spread by the Official Nintendo Magazine in the United Kingdom.

During the Wii U Preview in September, the European wing of the company mentioned that the game would be out in the launch window. The launch titles were talked about in depth, but most titles in the window were left with little information and no idea on when to expect them. Thanks to a recent string of information, we now know that Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge will be coming on January 11, with this software following a week later.

In SiNG Party, players can dance and sing to a variety of popular songs, with ''Call Me Maybe'' from Carly Rae Jepsen being used as an example. In Party mode, the person with the Wii U GamePad can read the lyrics of the songs, as well as interact with the crowd. Additional Wii Remotes can be used as interactive instruments, like a tambourine or a cowbell. The game also features a Sing mode in which the singer is rated on their abilities and timing.

SiNG Party is a launch title for the Wii U in North America, and there is no word of it coming to Japan.

China is getting its own version of the Nintendo 3DS XL soon.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32377

Nintendo's publishing partner for its various handheld systems in the mainland of China, iQue, will be releasing their own version of the Nintendo 3DS XL this coming December.

The iQue 3DS XL, as the system will be known in that country, will come in three different variations. The silver and red models will feature a Mario and Luigi crest on the front saying ''we are twins'', with Super Mario written under it in fancy writing. There is also a special white and red model, which features Mario's face as well as many Mushroom and Coin emblems. All three versions will come with Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, installed on the included SD card.

Most of the main features of the system are available, like the StreetPass Mii Plaza, the AR Games and the Photo application. The system will however lack an eShop for the time being, and it has not been announced if this will be made available in the near future. The system currently also lacks a price point, which should hopefully be resolved soon.

Also, learn about the roots of the careers of both Game Center CX's Arino and the Nintendo president.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32276

Satoru Iwata mentioned his interest in making video games once more, but says it would be an inconvience for many people involved. This and more he mentioned in a Q&A session on the Game Center CX special, which aired after the Nintendo Direct conference.

As a reply to Arino Shinya's question, touching on this very issue, the Nintendo president said the following: ''If I had the time, I would love to. If I put aside my duties as company president to work on games, I believe it would inconvience many people. I am resisting.''

''What if you spent an hour every day making an Famicom-class game?'', asks Arino as a follow-up. ''Games can be purchased as online downloads now. They create new opportunities. A single individual can then create and release their own games. Yes, it may be my chance.'', concludes Iwata.

This is not the only issue which is brought up in the coversation however. Topics include Arino's and Iwata's first encounters with video games, how Game Center CX came to be and insight from the president about why Famicom games were so punishing back in the day. Iwata also talks about why he entered game development in the first place and mentions how his parents weren't too found of the idea. ''The first company I worked for was HAL Laboratory. It was a tiny company. When I began there, I was one of only five workers. So my parents were vehemently opposed. For about half a year... my father didn't speak to me. Although we did argue.''

After the conversations conclude, Arino Shinya and Satoru Iwata enjoy themselves with a small Balloon Fight challenge. Their goal is to collect 20 balloons in a row, so that an orange one will appear out of nowhere. Once again gives Iwata insights about the development of the title and you might learn a secret that you do not know.

You can find the full Game Center CX translation in video form here below.

TalkBack / New Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Will Be Digital on the eShop
« on: October 21, 2012, 11:42:19 PM »

Nintendo continues to deliver on their promise with the new Pokémon title.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32190

Pokémon Fushigi no Dungeon: Magnagate to Mugendai Meikyu (Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Magnagates and the Infinitely Great Labyrinth) will be available digitally through the Nintendo eShop, when it arrives on November 23 in Japan. This information was put on Nintendo's official website earlier in the week.

The title will, once you decide to download it on your Nintendo 3DS, take up around 8,192 blocks of memory, which is over 1 gigabyte. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon for the Nintendo 3DS can be downloaded on its launch day, starting at 9:00 JST.

The new entry in the long-running series will be developed by Spike Chunsoft, which is fitting considering Chunsoft did most of the work on the series before their company merge with Spike. The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games are roguelikes at their fundamentals, with players navigating through randomly generated dungeons and making moves in a turn-based fashion. Pokémon Fushigi no Dungeon will look sharper than ever before, thanks to the use of the models from the Pokédex 3D Pro application. Currently, there are no plans known about a western release for the game, but considering past series releases, it is likely the game will come over.

« on: October 20, 2012, 07:19:35 PM »

The second week of new year is going to be brutal!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32185

European gamers will have to wait until January 11, 2013 to get their hands on Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge. This was revealed on Nintendo of Europe's website earlier in the week.

During the Wii U Preview in September, the European wing of the company mentioned that the game would be out in the launch window. The launch titles were talked about in depth, but most titles in the window were left with little information, with no idea on when to expect them.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge is an updated version of the third game, which was released earlier this year on other consoles. This new version will include all the downloadable content of the original, as well as various enhancements to smoothen out the gameplay further. The game will also include a new cooperative mode, in which you can also play as Ryu as well as the female ninja Ayane.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge is planned as a launch title in North America and will be available when the console hits stores on November 18. Japan will also see the game on launch, though the system will hit after Europe on December 8.

TalkBack / Wii U Demo Stations Coming Your Way Soon
« on: October 14, 2012, 11:47:05 PM »

Try out Nintendo's new console at various BestBuy and GameStop stores soon.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rumor/32116

According to insiders, who shared some information with GoNintendo, Wii U demo stations could be hitting stores as early as October 17.

There is no word on which games will be included on these demo stations and some stores might not have their pods activated on day one. Activation will be done on a store-to-store basis and Nintendo representatives will activate the stations themselves, so it might take until October 22 before a pod in your area is ready. GameSpot stores are, if this information is to be believed, getting the units directly after the work at BestBuy is completed.

Wii U stations have been already set up in the Nintendo World Store, as we reported last week.

TalkBack / Ikachan Announced for Nintendo eShop
« on: October 14, 2012, 12:30:10 PM »

Enjoy the cute squid in a native resolution!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32102

Nicalis, the developer of Cave Story and more, have announced that a dedicated 3DS eShop version of Ikachan will come to the system.

The developer has decided to do this specific version because they feel a port of the DSiWare game wouldn't do Ikachan justice on the Nintendo 3DS. This spark of inspiration comes from their work on the eShop version of Cave Story, which they felt delivered greatly on their expectations. The eShop version of Ikachan will support 3D visuals and will run in a native resolution. Nicalis notes that it's ''a lot more work, but definitely worth it.''

The game, originally announced as only a DSiWare remake, centers around a squid-like creature named Ikachan. Together with his friend Pinky, he tries to escape from an underwater cave system, which is ruled by a big fish called Ironhead. The caves were ruined by a string of earthquakes, causing them to be cut off from the open sea. Now Ikachan needs to find a way to the sea, as well as a way to acquire food for the inhabitants of the caves. Meanwhile, Ironhead tries to spread paranoia among the people and encourages violence against non-citizens to keep the population from ditching him.

Ikachan can only go up and down in beginning, though he acquires an item later that allows him to move horizontally. Later, he can attack enemies, which allows him to increase in level and make himself stronger.

Ikachan for both DSiWare and Nintendo eShop has not been given an exact release date.

Also, change the entire look of your house!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32020

Making the town and your character your own will be easier than ever, according to the developers of Animal Crossing on the Nintendo 3DS. The various design options in the game were discussed during this morning's Animal Crossing Nintendo Direct Event.

For starters, you can design your own roads and create paths for your visitors to walk on. You can even set up a camping ground, so that animals who don't live in your town can pay you a surprise visit. As the mayor, you can decide what to build in your town. However, you won't always have the cash flow to make this happen all by yourself and therefore you will have to ask villagers to chip in a little bit of their own money. This is a process that can take a day if you are lucky, but weeks if your project is quite huge and needs a lot of funds.

Of course, you can still buy your regular clothing from the Able Sisters, but in this new version you can also buy shoes or boots for your character to wear. You can now also completely change the outside of your house at Tanooki Housing Real Estate. You can keep it simple and just replace your chimney, or you can go crazy and turn your house into a castle. You can also decide on how the house will be expanded and make it your own maze of rooms and passage ways. Similar options are also available for the town hall.

The ''create designs'' feature from the previous games makes a triumphant return as well and with more possibilities than ever before. The palette of colors has been largely improved and there are various tweaks such as the ability to zoom in and out. You will be able put your creations on everything in the game as you see fit. You can apply it to shirts, furniture, flags, and other things you have. The best part is that you can share the creations through QR codes, so that all of your friends can enjoy them.

Animal Crossing for the Nintendo 3DS will be stores in Japan on November 8. As for North America, the last we heard was the game was coming in the first half of 2013.

TalkBack / Totaka Promises Many New Songs for Animal Crossing 3DS
« on: October 05, 2012, 03:56:08 PM »

K.K. Slider gets a new gig too!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32022

Music will play an even bigger role in the newest installment of Animal Crossing, which is coming to the Nintendo 3DS. This is according Kazumi Totaka, the sound director for the game, who talked during this morning's Animal Crossing Nintendo Direct presentation.

Depending on what time of day you will be walking through your town, the music will sound differently and will react with your surroundings. Players can expect early morning music to be calm and relaxed, while music during the day has a more upbeat tone. Later in the evening the music will get more bass and if you dare to take a stroll late at night, the music will be mysterious to the ears.

K.K. Slider is back as well in a brand new place called Club 444. On Saturdays, he does his usual guitar gig and lets you enjoy various relaxing and fun little melodies. Fortunately, this is not the only time during the week you will see K.K. At night he will take on the alter ego of DJ K.K. Famicom Night, A song that he will play was highlighted during the presentation and included bits of chiptune. You and friends can even dance to the music if you so desire.

Totaka has promised tons of new music for the game and hopes that players will be able to discover all of the tunes. Animal Crossing 3DS will be hitting store shelves in Japan on November 8. Last we heard the game was scheduled to come out in North American during the first half of 2013.

TalkBack / Swap Items and Homes Over StreetPass in Animal Crossing 3DS
« on: October 05, 2012, 12:01:59 PM »

The upcoming entry in the series promises a deeper social experience.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/32018

Animal Crossing on 3DS, coming to Japan on November 8, will have a stronger social focus, including StreetPass functionality, according to a recent Nintendo Direct video.

Using StreetPass, players can visit other people's homes and explore them on their own leisure. The amount of homes available in this "model park" is limited, but it will only start to replace homes after 48 houses. Characters will walk around this area, doling out items such as ice cream, balloons, and pin wheels.

Players also have the option to visit someone's town in while dreaming by visiting a massage parlor (seriously). This allows players to see how other people have set up their towns. Trees can be cut down and fruit can be collected, but it won't impact their village in the slightest. These dream towns can be accessed by connecting over the internet and finding the specific person's village number.

Animal Crossing also supports local and online play for up to four players. These four friends can visit any part of the town freely with one another, and have the option of enjoying many new activities. Some of these activities can be found on the new tropical island, which is populated by Kappas. A variety of activities and missions can be played among friends, giving out medals, which are spent on shops on that same island. An example of one of these missions was shown in the presentation, and involved collecting various fruit in a big massive maze. The host of these games is Tortimer, the old mayor of the Animal Crossing games, who has fun screaming at you and making sure that you know what to do.

Animal Crossing 3DS will be available in Japan on November 8th and will come to the west in 2013. Currently, the North American version is set for the first half of 2013, and the European version is just the ambiguous 2013.

TalkBack / Rhythm Hunter: HarmoKnight Review
« on: October 01, 2012, 04:33:07 PM »

Game Freak's original eShop title is worth exploring, but will certainly divide people.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/31946

A month ago, I shared my first thoughts on the new Game Freak title Rhythm Hunter: HarmoKnight. The eShop game saw its debut during the Nintendo Direct conference in August, and after seven days of waiting finally reached us. Has my opinion changed much after playing it to completion? Yes and no.

The story takes places in Harmonia, a magical kingdom where music reigns supreme. Everything is blissful and happy in the world, till the day the Noizoids attack with the intention of breaking the peace of the realm and bringing chaos to Harmonia. Gagan, the leader of the invading army, captures the princess and seals her away in his fortress surrounded by lava. The young boy you control, Tempo, takes the initiative to save her, and his adventure leads to various parts of the kingdom, including cities, beaches, and guitar-shaped islands.

Rhythm Hunter eases you in and gives you the chance to learn the standard moves of the protagonist. Two buttons drive the action: the A button for attacks, and the B button for jumping. During the musical stages, you can attack many parts of environment, which adds an extra beat to the music. The regular beats of the music fall under the enemies, and you have to hit them with pinpoint accuracy. This is easier said than done, and takes a minute to get used to. If you get the hang of it, the game rewards you with notes spread around the course that determine your final score. The notes form an additional layer of the music and are important to collect if you want to hear the song properly.

The same control method is used for a variety of exciting boss battles, though in these instances you have to memorize patterns before performing them. Initially, this is very easy, and a nice break from the usual gameplay. However, later levels also ask you to avoid parts of the environment and incoming obstacles. It is here the true difficulty of these segments lies, since the game is trying to do as much as possible to make you screw up. These might be harsh terms, but it makes the game exciting and memorable. This is more clearly shown in the game’s several mine cart stages, which put you in some rough spots and tricky situations. You use the standard control methods here, but the action is speedier and surprises you sometimes with enemy fire.

Aside from Tempo, two other characters make occasional appearances. Lyra, an agile woman, uses arrows as her method of attack. Instead of jumping, she ducks to avoid obstacles that can't be hit. Jinbei, with his trusty monkey sidekick, Cymby, makes drum music that destroys close enemies. I wasn't too fond of how these additional characters were given small portions of levels, and weren't given time to be fully fleshed out. In some places, their inclusion made the experience a bit disjointed and caused for a slower flow. I love that they are there, and they break up the gameplay well enough, but who knows what role they could have played with more time spent on them.

HarmoKnight isn't a long game. If you dedicate yourself to playing and don’t go back for high scores, the experience isn't longer than five hours. After it is all wrapped up, you play either the same content again or sped up versions that provide just a little more challenge. You won't get any major rewards for doing so, and the option certainly isn't for everyone, but it is a fun distraction nonetheless.

HarmoKnight’s presentation is something to see. The story features comic book cut scenes that immediately grab your attention and are a lot of fun to watch. The aesthetic during gameplay carries a stylish and colorful 3D look that makes the game an enjoyable ride from beginning to end, even if you fail in some places. The soundtrack is quite varied and features some lovely tunes. The game combines its gameplay and music in seamless fashion that benefits both.

Rhythm Hunter: HarmoKnight is a big departure from everything Game Freak has done in the past. The game cares about its concept very much and delivers a fun, interesting experience all the way through. It isn't the longest game, but if you like going for high scores, Rhythm Hunter should certainly keep you invested. If you like rhythm games, consider this a blip on your radar.

TalkBack / Dragon Quest X Has 300,000 Subcribers To Date
« on: October 01, 2012, 01:50:23 PM »

How much is Square Enix earning on their new endeavor?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31934

Dragon Quest X has shipped over 550,000 units so far, with 300,000 of them having an active subscription. The report comes from the Anime News Network, who translated the information from the Nihon Securities Journal.

While the game isn't shipping the usual amount of units when compared to other Dragon Quest games, the MMOPRG is on track to hit a huge subscriber base. Each subscriber is spending 1,000 Yen ($13) per month to keep playing, which means Square Enix makes approximately 300 million Yen ($3.9 million) with these current numbers. It doesn't, however, top the highest peak of Final Fantasy XI at the moment, which was an active subscription base of 600,000.

Dragon Quest X shipped on August 2 of this year and will be coming to Wii U at some point in the future. Owners of the Japanese Wii U Premium bundle can look forward to exclusive access to its beta once the console starts hitting store shelves in December. They are currently no plans for territories outside of Japan.

A listing at retailer Walmart indicates that North American players can expect rebranded Nintendo eShop cards in the near future. This was uncovered by gaming blog Trendy Gamers.

The new prepaid cards will allow you to purchase content (described as "games, videos and more" on the package) on the Nintendo 3DS as well as the upcoming Wii U console, which will be launching on November 18. There will be three different variations to choose from: $20, $35 and $50. The cards can't be used on the Nintendo DSi Shop or the Wii Shop Channel.

At this point in time, no information is known about when the cards will be available. However, it is to be expected that these will pop up on or near the Wii U launch date.

TalkBack / FIFA 13 Wii Quite Similar To FIFA 12
« on: October 01, 2012, 11:45:01 AM »

Some bad things are afoot in the realm of the footie games.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31911

FIFA 13 is reported to be on Wii "just a squad and kit update," when compared to last year's FIFA 12. This was reported by Nintendo Gamer and Official Nintendo Magazine's Chris Scullion.

The writer made a side-by-side analysis of both games and the results are quite interesting. The interface had no overhaul in the slightest, with various HUD elements intact from the previous version. Similar things are afoot in the FIFA's message center, where the exact same messages can be found in both iterations of the long-loved EA franchise.

While many buy the HD or the Nintendo 3DS versions, the Wii versions still sell a quite decent amount of units. The games consistently make the top ten Wii software in various different countries across Europe. FIFA 13 is now available worldwide on various different platforms, with a Wii U version coming at the console's launch.

TalkBack / European Wii U Launch Window Games Revealed
« on: September 13, 2012, 01:06:13 PM »

Because it isn't just all about the launch you know!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/31709

At the end of the European Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata showed a list with all the upcoming titles in the Wii U's launch window period.

The Wii U's launch window period will last until March 2013 and will feature a good variety of content. Of course, it doesn't showcase actually all the games for that period, but it does feature a notable amount of software.

Ubisoft titles Your Shape 2013, Just Dance 4 and Rabbids Land, which were previously teased for launch, will not make it if the list is to be believed. Other big games that are missing from launch are LEGO City: Undercover, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge and Scribblenauts Unlimited. When exactly the games are going to be released remains uncertain for now.
