Nintendo Gaming / Re: Looking both ways before animal crossing
« on: November 11, 2012, 11:40:35 PM »
I'll like to add that there is a certain charm about the Gamecube version that feels missing to me in the ds/Wii releases.  The music was a lot better and I'm of the type that enjoyed the acres layout as apposed to the rolling log view the game has going for it now.  For some reason, the acre affect made the world seem so much bigger and it was more fun to run around in as I felt I didn't know what I was going to run into in the other screen.  It gave off a 3d rpg feel for me.  The rolling log looks feel constricting to me as if that small village IS the whole world and there is nothing else.

The new versions have all their upgrades but I still feel as if they don't hold a candle to the vibe the original gave you.  I really hope that if Nintendo were to release a new Animal Crossing on the WiiU that they'll go back to the acre layout or just a overhead third person view similar to the acres.  If anyone wants to look up at the sky for any reason (look for presents to shootdown or star gaze) then use the motion sensing features of the gamepad as a first person view.  You'll just have to hold the control up towards the sky and simulate looking up.  Throw a crosshair on there and you can even aim for balloon presents lol.

Sorry to derail the topic at hand but I've got myself a situation now.  In preparing for the coming arrival of the WiiU launch, I've been thinking of how I'll be setting it up when I get it and something just hit me.  Since there is no optical out on the WiiU and my receiver doesn't have an HDMI port (its old, big whoop, want to fight about it lol) how will I get my surround sound fix?

From what I've read, its HDMI or bust to get surround sound.  My only option at the moment is to hook up the WiiU to my HDTV through the HDMI cable and then the TV to my receiver through an optical audio cable.  Everything I have read though states that most TVs wont pass the HDMI audio signal through to the optical, and even if it does, it'll just downgrade it to stereo.  F me hard man.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do outside of buying a whole new receiver (I'll be broke due to the WiiU).

My current TV is a Samsung 40 HDTV model number LN-40A650 and the receiver is a Pioneer SX-315

TrueNerd you def need to get the classic controller.  I never played Xenoblade with the standard setup but I can't imagine how that would feel.

Also, if your upset over WiiU not upscalling, please don't go looking for images of Xenoblade running on Dolphin.  It'll just hurt even more.

Wow those are some detailed descriptions Evan, nice work.  I wish I could contribute but its been months since I finished the game and barely remember enough of the mechanics anymore to be able to speak in any depth on the subject lol.

Cater, my tip to you is use Rikki lol.  I was stuck on him for a good day with my main crew that I used for the majority of the game.  I decided to throw Rikki into the bunch since I heard good things about him.  At the time I still looked at him as the red headed step child of the bunch.  The underachieving one in the group who just gets by on charms and a half assed pat on the back to make him feel needed.  Boy was I wrong though.  Rikki single handedly turned the tide in my favor.

Riki was the savior to Xenoblade for me as I have a profound hatred for rpgs with what I deem to be brutal or cheap final bosses that come right out of left field.  I was getting to that point, so much so that I had to take a 24 hr break to cool off lol.  By that point in the game, I didn't want to grind anymore so it was do or die.  To make a long story short, just look at my screenname, it should tell you who the real star of that game is lol.

EDIT: Cater, if you need more info, go and look up the old Xenoblade thread that was created when the Euro version came out.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=35406.75

Those of us that imported the game, if I remember correctly, had a lot of discussions on strategies and uses for particular characters.  You can also probably see when I reached my breaking point with the final boss and the feedback others gave me at the time.

If you liked that one Shyguy, check THIS out man lol.  Please ignore if you don't want the beginning spoiled for you though.  This video seems to be the starting stage and it gives out a few unknown (to me) gameplay tidbits like a nasty way to regain health (which could backfire and damage you instead lol).

http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/kw1utu/zombiu-bunker-walkthrough-part-i

Play it in HD and the game looks amazing.  The lighting is rediculously good.  I'm thinking these gameplay videos are coming from the Review copies.  The game is coming out in a matter of weeks so I'm sure review copies are out by now to ensure the reviews come out around release.  The game looks complete from what I can see.

EDIT: If you want a few good laughs and a lot of "smh" then please do read the comments under the video.  The Sony/MS fanboyism on there is palpable.

Yeah, I think you'd have to pay people NOT to buy a Mario game at this point.  Rayman needs more of a push than anything else.  I would assume that Nintendo would like to have Rayman be a primary Nintendo mascot from here on out.  Would be nice to have Rayman in the next Smash Brothers.

Also, Ubisoft has been very close with Nintendo ever since the Wii and they, out of all the 3rd parties, are actually throwing solid support towards the WiiU.  For this, I believe Nintendo wants to do Ubisoft a favor and push their software.  Nintendo software will sell regardless but they need to do whatever they can to break the stigma within 3rd parties that their games won't sell on Nintendo hardware when they have to compete with Nintendo software.

I would assume its something software related on the Tivo units.  They were never designed for streaming even though they are wireless.  I wonder if future Tivo units will provide the feature of a future software update will open it up.  Waiting for updates on Tivo though is rough, they are lazy as sh*t in that regard.

dam, would've been nice if I could watch all my shows on the gamepad.  Thanks for the info though.  I wonder when Nintendo will hold another Nintendo Direct tailered for the WiiU given that the system launches in mid November.  There is still so much to talk about.  I think one a week before launch day will be where it lands.

Quick question about Nintendo TVii.  I've searched the net and haven't been able to find an answer.  I know Nintendo TVii will work with Tivo boxes but will you be able to stream things recorded on the Tivo box to the gamepad or is it just an integration of your recordings allowing you easy access to view on your TV?

Some new videos up with a supposedly updated build which fixed a couple of the issues most people previously had such as floaty controls.  Game just keeps getting better and better.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U Demo Station Impressions (Starting 10/17)
« on: October 25, 2012, 01:12:06 PM »
I guess I'll just cut and paste my post from the WiiU thread since its better suited here now. My quick initial impression of the system is that I'm in love.
  • The controller felt great in my hands, I didn't really feel much of a difference in weight as compared to my 360 controller.
  • The button layout was perfect and the analog sticks have to be the best ones I've ever used.  They just felt soooo smooth.
  • The touch screen was good, nothing mind blowing but also not anything sh*tty.  Its touch responce was really good.  That was something I was afraid about coming in.  I figured it was one of those touch screens that required me to use my finger nail instead of the base of my finger.  Thank god it wasn't, it operated as smooth as I would expect a tablet screen would (although I'm not much of a tablet user so I can't really compare them to well)
  • The build quality was great.  Everything felt sturdy yet soft to the touch.
  • The only playable demo was Rayman which was Fing amazing.  I haven't played Rayman since the SNES days so I was floored by what was going on.  I particularly LOVED the Castle Rock stage.  The demo station was hooked up to what sounded like a really good audio system and the music was on blast so the whole stage was a complete rush.  The other demos were disappointing in that the few that I checked out didn't have videos and only had still images to look at.  I'm surprised trailers weren't up for each respective game.  Also, there was some serious loading when exiting the Rayman demo.

All in all, my experience was just great.  I'm even more excited now to get my WiiU on launch day.  My time with Rayman has me sold on the gameplay and it's shot up as a day one purchase when it releases.  Has anyone else ran into these demo stations in the wild yet?  I know Bestbuys are getting them but I'm not sure who else is yet.

PS.  One other thing I'll like to add since Razorkid brought it up, the shoulder buttons really are perfect.  If your the type to use your middle fingers with the gamepad then they all fit snuggly on the shoulder buttons.  When I played, I rested my index fingers on the initial L and R buttons and then had my middle fingers resting on the addition L and R buttons right under them.  Everything fit like a perfectly placed tetris block.  Its almost as if they used a mold of my hands when they made the gamepad.  I will also second Razorkid's opinion that its as good, if not better, than the comfort level of the Cube pad which is really saying alot.

Sorry to cut into this conversation but I managed to swing through my local Best Buys today to see if they had their demo units up and lucky me it was.  My quick initial impression of the system is that in love.

I'm trying not to think of it, hopefully by 2013 they mean Feb the latest.  I've been replaying WW for the time being but its not helping to contain the desire.  I've even hit such a low point that at times I've contemplated learning python programming, and using the Blender game creation software to create my own perfect Animal Crossing lol.  I even got as far as modeling a 3d model of the male animal crossing character lol.

As you can see, I have a SEVERE itch for some new Animal Crossing.  I need my fix bad.

It does indeed but I love the concept.  Been looking into it a bit more and I guess they are modding arma 2 for the beta and looking into releasing a standalone game using thier upcoming Arma 3 engine which would really improve things for them.   The end results seem a long way off though.  I also looked into that War Z game and it looks to be farther along and a similar flavor just not as brutal with its difficulty.

dam, I do stay on top of console news but I do have to admit that I'm out of the loop with PC gaming.  I didn't see a thread on here about it (but I will admit I didn't search, for shame :( lol)  so I decided to put one up.  I've heard the creator is talking to a publisher about making a console version of this if the PC one takes off.  Does anyone on here play this?

General Gaming / A ZombiU like MMO??? Sign me the F up
« on: October 20, 2012, 12:10:31 AM »
Sup everyone, I just caught wind of this game (mod) and I thought I'd share.  Its only in beta stage right now but the concept sounds really engaging, similar to that of ZombiU but to a larger scale.  From what I can gather, but don't quote me, the game is a massive open world where you must survive hunger, zombies, and other human beings.  I don't think there is an end to the game and its more about survival and for how long.
The game basically starts you out at a random location.  I think you are given a gun, some rounds, a can of beans, and a bottle of water.  From then on out, you have to scavenge for food, supplies, and shelter.  Your character eventually has to rest and eat.  If you get hurt, you have to bandage the injury before you bleed out and pass out.  If you run into any vehicles, you can repair them if you have the right parts and use them to navigate the world.

Zombies are not all you have to worry about as other gamers will be just as big a threat.  There might be wandering bands of gamers who might just be out to kill whoever they can outnumber and take their supplies.  You also might luck out and find a group that is willing to take you under their wings thus adding to their armada.  You really never know who you can trust though as in any given moment, that gamer you have been playing with for the past hour might have just been working to earn your trust just to shoot you in the back when you least expect it to take that sweet gun you managed to find.  Or, your partner could decide to leave you behind to a zombie hord in order to facilitate his own escape.  You really never know.

To add weight to all these encounters, you only get one life in the game.  If you get killed, you have to respawn as a new character with just your initial loot again in another random location.

Here's a trailer that can really give you a sense of the game.  I'll remind you again that this game is in beta stage so there will be improvements as time goes on.

Have them  revive Raven Blade or any other WRPG so that I don't have to wait years before 3rd parties decide to port over the inevitable Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 4.  Have Retro show the world how great the gamepad would be for western styled rpgs.  Besides, I'd love to see what they would create.  I'm sure it'll look amazing and the atmosphere would be unparalleled.

I thought about that at one point and it should be a no brainer but alas, no news yet on such a feature.  There is so much they could do with this game and I think I've ranted on in the past about features I'll like to see them add but I'll just quickly breeze over them again here.

What Nintendo should add to AC: (all single and multi)
  • Board games
  • Dominoes
  • Checkers, Chess, etc
  • Cards (poker, spades, War, etc...) even provide collectable Mario cards, Zelda cards, etc
  • Water guns and balloons for summer shootemups in the village.
  • Tennis courts in each village (allow you to play singles or doubles against villagers and online against your friends)
  • Bowling allies
  • Billiards, Air hockey
  • Random 9 hole golf course generated specific to each town:  This will give you more of an incentive to visit other players towns online so you can try out their course and place a better score.

For Board games, dominoes, Checkers, Chess, and cards etc, you can play those either in your homes or in a park.  The villages will have a park with those stone tables that have the checker board painted onto it.  I don't know exactly what their called but I used to see them everwhere when I lived in Jersey.

With Tennis and Golf, there could be scheduled tournaments for you to participate in.  Some could be village specific where you and the villagers join in.  Others could be online focused where the field is much larger and a leader board could be generated.  It could even take place over the course of a whole weekend like real golf tournaments.

Sh*t, the tennis, bowling, billiards, and air hockey could all be in a new Rec Center building for the game.  Even better, make the Rec Center a giant tree house lol.

All this should be done in AC, the smaller games shouldn't be that hard to create ingame and they already have Tennis and Golf engines they can use.  Just take the code for Mario Tennis and Mario Golf and work it into AC.

All this needs to be done to help break the monotony that eventually falls in with all AC games.  This will give gamers more things to do online asside from the little options they have now.  I see AC3ds is adding some multiplayer games which is a step in the right direction but still, more could be done.
If Nintendo were to add all this to AC, it'll be THE game of my life and I don't think I'll ever put it away.

I'm only about 3-4 hrs in or so and I'm only at the level 15 dungeon so fatigue hasn't affect me yet but you really do have to be a lover of the grind to be able to get much from this.  I've always been the type to grind in rpgs so this is par for the course with me.  I do get a kick out of the pokemon vibe I'm getting from this game though.  I think part of the Joy of the game is finding just the right team for the dungeon and constantly either tweaking it with different items or swapping out a denpa man for another one.  I think that's probably why I'm still so addicted to it is that I'm in love with searching for new denpa men and then seeing how they can upgrade my current lineup if at all.  My refusal to use the scanner to find new denpa men I think helps in keeping things interesting though.  It makes searching for unique denpa's fun as I still get excited when I find a strange new guy floating around.  If I were to just search online for different denpa men with particular skills I need, it just takes all the fun out of the hunt.

TalkBack / Re: NBA 2K13: Help Wanted
« on: October 11, 2012, 01:20:09 AM »
As a huge fan of basketball (nba 2k) and football (nfl 2k but madden by default ATM) I can see how things have become difficult.  I too have been one to never really run plays during my time with these games but its becoming more apparent that in order to really succeed, you need to at least run a couple of plays.  This is evident when you play the high ranked teams or teams with high defence.  Its even more important when you play competitively online against really good players.

I have yet embraced this technical approach but am slowing changing.  The most I do at the moment is adjust my defensive schemes on defence and live off of the pick and roll and post games on offence.  Also, listen to everything Broodwars posted above me.  Without running plays, you can live off pick and rolls and moving the ball around.  Defence always depends on whats hurting you, in a nutshell, zone for attackers and man for shooters.

I do recommend starting on easy though when you jump back in.  You might struggle at first but once you get the hang of things, you'll be killing the CPU and eventually adjusting the settings.  Also, refrain from playing reckless and be patient.  A commom approach to new gamers raised on the oldschool basketball sims, especially live, is to just want to jam the ball into the paint with an arrey of slick ball moves and then dunk it on the opposition.  That's just not going to work.  You'll more thank likely get the ball stolen or have a charge foul called on you.  Also, be very careful with your passes, don't try a fast brake unless your sure you can pull it off and the same goes with an alley-oop.  Basically, just be very patient and pick your spots, don't be afraid to live off the jumper.  Once you've mastered the pick and roll, you can then start getting comfortable with attacking the rim.

I do have to mention that I was blindsided in the second area I believe where you can talk to a NPC that'll refill your life for you.  Is it just me or were they smoking up in a cipher in order to replenish their health?  I almost couldn't believe what I was reading when it was saying "puff puff puff" lol.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U in Review (News & Rumor Consolidation)

Well DX as far as I understand it, and please those more knowledgeable chime in, DX compliance only applies to PCs as its a property of Microsoft.  From everything I've read regarding the WiiU and its rumors, it can be argued either way.  Some people have said it has DX 11 equivalent features whereas others claim it to only be 10.1.  Others have said it supports some of the equivalent features but not all.  I don't think we'll know until someone opens up an actual WiiU and sees whats inside.

I think all this is being made to be more than it should.  I don't really think it'll matter much if its 10.1 or 11, games will look good on it as long as developers put in the effort.  If games like Uncharted and Assassin's Creed 3 can be done on such old hardware such as whats used in the PS360 (which are equivalent to DX9 I believe, don't quote me though) then how much better can games actually look.  They look amazing now and if that's what the WiiU can do AT A MINIMUM then I'm fine with that and I'm sure everyone else will be.

If a new Zelda gets released and looks amazing, who in their right minds will care if its running on DX 10 or 11 equivalent hardware?  Only fanboys who want to compare spec sheets will care.  The majority of gamers won't be able to tell the difference IMO.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii U in Review (News & Rumor Consolidation)

Well I like to think BlackNmild posted that since there is still this belief going around that the WiiU isn't even on par with the PS360.  This is just more evidence to hopefully put to rest these discussions of "The WiiU is not even stronger than the PS3" and "the WiiU is the Wii all over again".

From everything I've read on various forums among people supposdly "in the know"  the WiiU will not be outclassed by the PS4 and 720 as the Wii was by the PS360.  The easiest comparision I've heard that can get the point across is that the WiiU will be a low-mid end gaming PC whereas the PS720 will be a high end gaming PC.  The WiiU will be able to play everything on the PS720 but will probably have to do it with a few minor bells and wistles downgraded or removed, probably at a lower res, and maybe a lower framerate as a last resort I would assume.

Having just recently upgrading my 5 yr old mid end graphics card (DX 10 compliance) for a mid end card from this generation (DX 11) and maxing out the graphics settings on my current PC games, I can say the increase in performance is nice but nothing too drastic.  I'm sure thats the same thing I'll be seeing when comparing WiiU games to PS720 games.
