Hmm...I already own superstar on Wii VC from an old Club Nintendo Award....I wonder if it'll let me transfer that to Wii U for $1.00, let me buy another Kirby game, and get the 3rd free?   Gotta try that when I get home from work.

For the purpose of mutually shocking each other into guffaws of disbelief.  How bad is your actual play time of Fire Emblem Awakening (as recording by your activity log) versus the play time recorded by the game's save file?  This should make people who chose casual mode smug with the decision.

Hard Mode - Chapter 14
Game Save File Time - 27 Hours, 24 seconds.
Play Time via Activity Log (as in, ACTUAL play time including restarts) - 57 hours, 39 minutes.

So basically, I've lost 30 hours, 28 minutes, and 36 seconds to restarts, WELL OVER half of my play time.  Wow, that's bad.

If the online is VERY WELL implemented, this might be awesome.  MIGHT.

i doubt much will get revealed,

So says every cynic RIGHT BEFORE the next Nintendo Direct.

I'm going to go out on a limb here, make like Babe Ruth, and actually raise the bar:

The Warmup:

Wonderful 101
Pikmin 4
Luigi U DLC

Leading to the climax, about to have mind blown:

Yoshi Yarn gameplay
Windwaker remake gameplay
Wii U Fit

MIND=BLOWN:

Xenoblade 2 (or whatever this is)
Bayonetta 2
Metroid Prime 4 (or whatever Retro has been working on since DKCR)
The New Mario game from Tokyo EAD

pickles
Pickles.

I'm liking it so far.

I don't know if this some new cool internet meme that you web-saavy kids started in the bonus segment (which I didn't listen to, sorry, Hockey sucks), but I'll get into it.  I can be hip!  PICKLES!  LOLCATZ!

Just kidding.   Go Ducks.

Already own the two wii games, passing on excitebike.  But i will be getting the Aquia game, couple friends always recommended it to try out.  Good selection of games this month.

You must have gotten your 3DS late.  Anyone who bought a 3DS between launch and the "real launch" the following April got Excitebike at a very discounted price.  As in free.

This Strategy has been tried before and let me tell you it doesn't work.

Oh man, think about it:  if I could get awesome games like Temple Run, Angry Birds Space, and...

Oh, you're right.

not a bad deal but WHY do you want an XL

Uh...because DS games look absolutely beautiful on it.  And because I don't care hardcore Nintendo you are, there is no way you have played every single great DS game worth playing.   Maybe you have all of them, but I doubt you've played all of them, unless you have a severe allergic reaction to JRPG's.

On a slightly different subject, holy crap, am I the only one who downloaded Super Mario World and thinks it looks better on my HDTV than in my 15 year old dreams?   Seriously, it looks FANTASTIC.   Much, much better than it did on the same TV from my Wii.   I'm not the only one noticing this, am I?   I was kind of expecting this to look accurate by stretchy, like on my Wii.  I am blown away by this.

Are you kidding me, go with Advance Wars: Days of Ruin. The beauty of this game is that it's quite a bit different from the other advance wars games you've already played so it's different enough to make it a fun new experience and similar enough that if you liked the first 3 you'll like this one for sure.

In my book it's not even close go with Advance Wars

Okay, here's my reason for voting for 999, despite having played, loved, and wooed all the Advance Wars games:

999 is this pristine, distilled version of what the best of visual novels should be.  It will make you think far beyond the end.   It will be one of the more, perhaps most, unique games you have every played.   Some (myself included) don't even consider it a game.   Visual novel is a horrible description as well.   The way the narrative is built on multiple playthroughs in this elegent GroundhogDay/RunLolaRun style is mesmerizing.

And, in practical terms, you will finish it in a third of the time, if not sooner, than Days of Ruin.

I second that.  999.

 :@   Frick!

Is this what I get for downloading these day 1?  Frick!

Oh, Liberation Maiden is super short, the boss fights rock, ESPECIALLY the last one.

And Crimson Shroud is oh so awesome.   Fans of early Bioware AD&D games should especially apply.

@Ceric

Yeah, don't you feel you guys just gave money to Ubisoft now? Who could have financed the game but didn't, and now they're going to reap the rewards? That's something I'd be very wary of: am I giving money to this indie dev just so a publisher can later swoop in despite refusing them the first time around?

Guil, I'm sure someone will talk about this on RFN, but I agree with you....I didn't give money, but if I did, I'd feel somewhere between betrayed and robbed right now.   I know people still got their beta and are getting the retail release, but let's be honest, when people pledge on Kickstarter, it's not exactly the same as preordering something on Amazon.  The dynamics of the relationship, while not explicitly dissimilar, are implicitly very, very different.

15
Metroid Prime worked because it still looked and felt like a Metroid game, just like Super Mario 64 still looked and felt like a Mario game. It's difficult to tell how Maverick Hunter would have turned out based on the short clips released, but the action seems very different from Mega Man X, it's source material, and it certainly doesn't look anything like Mega Man besides X being blue. Maverick Hunter may have been a good game, just not a good Mega Man game.

You have a very good point there.  Metroid as a 2D game was slow and methodical, and could conceivably translate into a 3D FPS.   MegaMan is very different-- fast, with a whole lot of jumping.   Just the platforming would be difficult.  Metroid dealt with that by severely limiting the platforming and almost divorcing jumping from combat completely---I don't recall any enemy or boss that required precise jumping or platforming, except maybe that thing with the spinning tentacles in MP3.

16
Thank God this never saw the day of light... This reminds me of that horrible mature Bomberman Konami made a few years back...

You say that, and I understand that logic and history would tell you to think that (see Metal Slug 3D and countless other examples) but..... When they first announced Metroid Prime, I thought it was a HORRIBLE idea.   And developed by some no-name American studio?   From people from Iguana, which brought us Turok?   All the signs at the time pointed to Metroid Prime being a big stinking pile.   And look how that turned out.

And this Mega Man game would have been from some of the MP people.   Who knows how this would have turned out?

17
I think the recent stretch on DS, Wii, and now 3DS of great JRPGs is on the same level as back then, if not better. I'd make the same argument for the recent boom of 2D platformers being better than what we saw on the NES and SNES.

Oh, the DS....now that was an RPG machine.   I think I've played (assuming you lump in SRPG's as well) at least 20 on the DS, and I've still got a few on my backlog.  I would say the DS RPG library outshines any other console/generation/etc., including the PS2.

I think you mean "4 Heroes of LIGHT"

With that said, 4 Heroes of Light was very underrated.   The art style was this beautiful pastel Phantom Hourglass Styles crossed with Animal Crossing's "rolling" world.   And from what I hear, Bravely Default is a really good iteration of the 4HoL combat system.  Loved the risk/reward mechanic in that one.

I think the title of the game hurt it more than anything else, since it implies that this is a remake of FF3, which it is nothing like, and it makes it seems like you only have 4 characters to control throughout the game, which is also untrue, as you have a big cast of characters coming in and out, FF4 style.

TalkBack / Re: Fire Emblem Awakening Team Discusses Casual Mode
« on: April 03, 2013, 09:32:58 AM »
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I LOVE permadeath, and I think people who play casual mode are really missing out.  The way that permadeath affects how the player defines "winning" and "losing," and the difficulty and tension it adds to the game, cannot be understated.   I get how a lot of people get frustrated with having to restart a mission, 5, 10, or even 20 times.   According to the game, I've played the game for 5 hours.   According to my 3DS Activity Log, I've played for 19 hours.   So I get the frustration.   But I'm fine with restarting a game 20 times (which I just did with Chapter 6, the assassination attempt on Emmeryn), because I know that I will beat that mission eventually, which I just did with Chapter 6.  And I've got to tell you, I had this big grin on my face for hours afterwards because I finally beat it.   Making victory (or at least, my "leave no man behind" definition of victory) so hard-won makes that eventual success so sweet.   If I had beaten that same mission in just 1 or 2 tries, it would have made it far less meaningful.

Wow.  With Theathrythm and Harmoknight, we should try to guess what the next 3DS music game is going to be called.   Just remember the formula:  Musical Term + Totally Unrelated Term.

Also everybody would be long banned by now.

Another reason why Miiverse rocks. An online message board with barely any trolling, etc.? Sign me up.

I'll give that a "Yeah!"   I enjoy reading Miiverse posts FAR more than posts on most internet message boards.  And I can actually read them with my 7 year old without worrying about what will come up.

TalkBack / Re: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate Review
« on: March 05, 2013, 10:43:35 PM »
It seems those who gave it terrible reviews either only played the recent demo which had relatively bad controls and lopsided boss fights, or had only ever played Symphony of the Night, which is a constant reference point for snooty fanatics.

Okay, I played SotN, AoS, DoS, PoR, and OoE, and knowing all of those acronyms like the back of my hand doesn't make me snooty in the least.

But I did just play the demo, and that was really...underwhelming.  Are they really better in the full retail, because you're right, the controls are a little sloppy in the demo, and I was not thrilled with the framerate either.   And the graphics weren't great either--- it seems like they had a good engine to start with, so it could have looked great, but they got a 14-year old to do the textures.

I totally don't mind the God-Of-War-ness, but these are issues....

My daughter LOVED the 2 demos for this game and has been begging me to buy it for her for half a year.  She's already gone through all of her allotted "uses" for both demos.     But I can't bring myself to spend $40 on it, when there are similar games in this genre cost 99cents on IOS.  I've been kind of lying to my daughter and telling her it's not out yet.    I'm willing to spend...oh, $20 for a used copy, but for some reason, this game absolutely REFUSES to get marked down.  $30 on Amazon?  That's getting closer, but not close enough.

And though I haven't played a second of it, my daughter swears that it is over and above so much better than anything similar on IOS.

Are there people who are going to buy yoshi at 5$?

No, but it doesn't matter.  Us Virtual Console fans like to joke that such and such a game might as well be put out because it's basically "free money" and costs Nintendo nothing.  With ESRB ratings and paying M2 to emulate, that's actually not true.

But since this was an ambassador game, you know what, it is true in this case.  It really costs Nintendo NOTHING.
