TalkBack / Re: Wii U Has 8 GB of Internal Storage
« on: June 08, 2012, 07:11:58 PM »
I can understand only including a small amount of storage but 8GB seems really small.  Isn't the standard for modern phones, iPads, other tablets, etc. 16GB?  Why not at least bump it up to 16GB, that seems like it'd probably be enough for most people, 8GB seems like it could be small, not so much for more serious gamers who are going to need a hard drive regardless but even for more casual gamers who may want to just download a game here or there and not want to buy a hard drive.

I wonder if Nintendo will be smart and have a "gamer" bundle with the pro controller and a hard drive packed in.  Seems like it'd be something that would sell well.

This screams pack in game to me.  Don't know if it will be, but it should be.  With a new controller type, just like with Wii, they really need a pack in game included that shows off how great the new controller is.  This game sounds like it would fit that role well but outside of that, doesn't sound like it would be that great of a full price standalone release.

I hope this turns out to be something interesting.  The first couple Harvest Moon games (SNES and N64) were absolutely brilliant games.  The series since then has fallen off a little bit, the Rune Factory games were an interesting idea and some of the others were decent but nothing has captured the magic of Harvest Moon 64.

TalkBack / Re: New Play Control! Pikmin 2 Finally Coming Stateside
« on: April 24, 2012, 10:36:24 PM »
Great for people who missed this game when it originally came out.  Pikmin 2 was a blast, one of my favorite Gamecube games.  The multiplayer was quite fun and the single player was great as well.  Never played the original on Gamecube so I got the New Play Control version and the controls are a good fit and the game was good, though not quite as good as 2 in my opinion.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: About time for another Wave Race... Wii U?
« on: April 22, 2012, 10:19:31 PM »
The N64 game was amazing, one of my favorite N64 games.  The game was definitely lacking in courses but the courses that were there were really good.  I still go back and play it once in a while for old times sake.  The graphics may not be much by today's standards but for the technology of the time, the game had a great look to it.  I don't know why but I didn't get around to buying Blue Storm until late in the Gamecube's life when I got it used for $6 or so.  It's good but it didn't seem to quite have the same magic as the original.  I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a version made for Wii, it seems like a game that could have been a good fit for motion controls if done well.

TalkBack / Re: Pikmin Wii U Confirmed to Come to E3 2012

This is long overdue.  I can't believe they skipped an entire generation (not counting the New Play Control version) of a series that had started out so well on the Gamecube, especially given the long droughts in software that the Wii had.  And the fact that the game fits the Wii control scheme well, and also would have fit the controls on the DS well, though getting everything on such a small screen may have been a challenge.

I hope this game lives up to the first two, as much as I enjoyed the first two I couldn't imagine I wouldn't like this one but Nintendo has developed a reputation for sometimes being lazy with their non-AAA franchises and occasionally doing some strange things.  Hopefully this one will be worth the wait and the series will make appearances a little more frequently from now on.

I was in the local Gamestop a few days ago looking at their selection of Gamecube games.  It was pretty sad, pretty much just a mix of shovelware crap and good games that were priced way too high.

TalkBack / Re: Pokémon Black and White Sequels Announced
« on: February 25, 2012, 07:53:41 PM »
Awesome.  I still don't have a 3DS and don't plan on picking one up soon.  I've been meaning to try out a Pokemon game for a long time but never have, almost bit on either Black or White when they were on sale but never did.  Going to have to finally bite on this one.

It is kind of sad, however, that the DS seems to be getting about as much support well after 3DS release as the Wii is well before WiiU release.  At least NOA got smart and realized that Xenoblade and The Last Story needed to get out here somehow to help fill out the schedule.

Wow, the Virtual Console lives, amazing.  Interesting to see Hulu Plus on the Wii, I've been contemplating a subscription for a while.

I would have rather had Tiger Woods released this year than Madden but at least there will be at least one Wii game coming out in the second half of 2012...

That's true that it's not really fair to compare first party to third party peripherals.  But they were both a huge success without Nintendo bothering to support them, and yes, I'm measuring success entirely by sales because that's the measure Nintendo and every other for profit company uses.

You can't expect a peripheral to succeed when even the makers of it refuse to support it 100%.
Nintendo disagrees, see the balance board and wii motion plus as exhibits A and B.

It's amazing to me that a company that big can completely miscalculate the demand for a product like this.  It seems kinda obvious that it would not necessarily be as successful on the other systems as on the Wii...

The way Nintendo has handled everything related to online so far, it's almost surprising you didn't need to send a letter by snail mail or carrier pigeon...

This must be a sign the world is going to end in 2012.

« on: January 14, 2012, 06:21:02 PM »
Sometimes I wonder why PR people say so much stuff that clearly isn't true and that they're trying to completely spin.  Reading his attempt at spinning the Wii's massive dropoff to a positive thing just makes me less likely to believe anything he says in the future.

It's a shame Monkey Ball wasn't better for the Wii, it seemed like a perfect fit for the series.  Someone should have made a full game out of the Table Tilt balance game, that was so much fun but it needed more levels.

I wish there had been more games that utilized the balance board.  For how many it sold, it doesn't seem to have gotten that much support, I suppose since so many people bought it for just Wii Fit.  It's a shame that so many of the peripherals that Nintendo releases get so little support, including by Nintendo itself.

Every time I've heard the issue of public funding for stadiums come up, the majority of economic studies done seem to show that the economic benefits are far overstated and that the public isn't necessarily getting value for the taxes put in from a purely economic standpoint.  Cities/states don't continue to do it for economic reasons, it's because of pressure from the public that doesn't want to lose the sports team that they cheer for.  And with how popular the NFL in particular is, the teams have a huge amount of leverage in that area.

TalkBack / Re: No Tiger Woods on Wii This Year
« on: January 11, 2012, 01:32:46 AM »
This really sucks, I bought Tiger Woods 11 when it came out and have played a ton of the game and really enjoyed it.  I skipped Tiger Woods 12 since I'm still playing through the career mode on Tiger Woods 11 but I was planning to pick up Tiger Woods 13.  That means I'm down to hoping that by some miracle the 2K baseball game this year is good and that Mario Party 9 is more than a waggle-fest.  This could be a sad year for the Wii, good thing I still have a backlog of games to play through and a few older games I haven't gotten around to buying yet.

It is fairly easy to find professional sports on the internet streaming live.  MLB and NFL don't want this because they'd rather have you paying for NFL Sunday Ticket or mlb.tv if you want to watch out of market games/games on the NFL Network.  At least NBC has gotten smart and streams Sunday night games on their website and even lets you choose between different camera angles.  It's a shame it's so far behind live TV or it would actually be a nice companion to watching on TV.  Give people a good legal option and they won't need to look for an illegal option.

I think it's a joke that professional sports stadiums are paid for primarily by taxpayers, the owners are mostly billionaires, the players are paid insane amounts, yet the public has to pay for their place to play in most markets because if the city/state won't pay for it they'll move to another city that will.  But that's a whole separate discussion than piracy.

If you're going to look at the music industry as an example, you could argue that a large portion of the issues the music industry has is how hard they fought piracy and how they actually made it a disadvantage for the consumer to buy the music legally between CDs with copy protection and downloads with copy protection.  And going after consumers with lawsuits was a horrible PR move.  They did their fair share to create the problem they've found themselves in but at least they've somewhat realized their mistakes and have stopped suing their customers and allowed sites to sell music without copy protection.  From what I've heard, which the list of best selling albums from each year would seem to support, is that the music industry actually grew in 2011.

It's also not the 1990s anymore.  As was mentioned, you don't have to buy a full album to get the one song you want, you can download just the song.  The cable TV industry would suffer in the same way if they're ever forced to go a-la-carte instead of forcing customers to pay for a bunch of channels they don't want.  There's also streaming options like Rdio and Spotify that allow people to legally listen to music and not have to buy the albums.  And there has been the invention of the podcast, which for someone like me takes up about 80% of the time that I would have spent listening to music so I buy less music now.  My point being, the sales of albums would be way down compared to where it was 20 years ago even if there was no piracy at all.

One commonly used argument pirates use for old NES games is that they are no longer commercially available, which is often true. A lot of them are now available on Virtual Console, but not every game is. Why are they not?
A lot of them are because the publishers don't have the rights to release the games anymore because they don't own the license anymore.  Or it's just not worth it financially to release some of the more obscure games.

I'd bet that most of these game companies are still supporting SOPA behind closed doors and want the ESA to support it, even if they won't publicly say that because they don't want the negative publicity.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Demands Take Down of Icon Games's Sales Numbers
« on: January 06, 2012, 12:22:42 PM »
1.  Doesn't Nintendo realize it's the internet, and once the information is out there it isn't going away?  And by asking them to take it down they're just going to bring more attention to the information and make things worse?

2.  Wal-Mart isn't included in NPD but they also don't prohibit companies from releasing their own sales figures which include sales made at Wal-Mart.

3.  He makes a good point about sales data being non-existent making things very hard for companies.  How can a company make business decisions without knowing how games on the service are doing?  You're going in basically blind.

Nintendo just fails at making things easy for 3rd party developers no matter what they do.

After the backlash against companies that have supported this bill, why would any company in their right mind publicly support this bill?  How about instead of forcing through a bill that breaks the internet and excessively takes away the rights of individual they write a more reasonable bill?

That's an interesting looking group of characters.  Hopefully 999 was successful enough for them to bring the sequel here.
