TalkBack / Re: Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward Review

I don't have a 3DS yet so I haven't gotten this game yet but it's at the top of my list once I get one.  999 was without a doubt my favorite game on the DS.  I agree that the review should at least mention the glitch, too many people on forums across the internet have reported the issue to consider it a few rare occurrences.

A little research on the internet showed that read speeds are a legitimate reason for not using SD cards for additional storage on the WiiU.  The majority of SD cards out there (the ones that are on sale every Black Friday) are Class 2 cards, which are only rated to read/write at 2 megabytes per second.  Even the more expensive Class 10 cards guarantee only 10 megabytes per second.  A typical hard drive has speeds in the 80-100 megabyte range.  USB drives seem to be somewhere in the middle, in the 20-30 megabytes per second range.

Newegg has Kirby Mass Attack for $9.99 and Amazon has Radiant Historia for $16.21.  I picked up both, very little in the Black Friday ads that interests me so I've made a couple purchases early.

It's a shame the series hasn't evolved more.  I thoroughly enjoyed the Gamecube version but didn't bother with the DS or Wii versions because the reviews all said that they were more of the same which didn't interest me.  It was fun once but to go through it again with such similar gameplay wasn't of interest to me.  The inclusion of the NES games in the Gamecube version was great, even after the main game got old I still went back regularly to play a little Balloon Fight or Wario's Woods.  The series showed such promise, it's sad that they haven't done more with it.

"I thought people had grown weary of it."

Funny how that hasn't stopped them from releasing Mario Party game after Mario Party game or from releasing virtually the same Animal Crossing game multiple times.

Miyamoto said he felt there was not much room left for evolution of F-Zero, asking the series fans "What do you want that we haven't done before"?
If this is their logic, why do Mario Kart and the NSMB games continue to be released?  Not that I don't like them because I do enjoy both series, but neither have really added anything all that new in quite some time, no more evolution than would be possible with F-Zero.

I'm sure that this has more to do with sales of the series than anything else, which is fine, Nintendo is a company and their objective is to make money, but saying there's nothing new to do with it seems like a stretch to me.

I actually thought of one case where the browser would be useful, for watching online video on the TV.
Well, you know what internet is for.
That video was a great way to start a Saturday.  Classic.

I actually thought of one case where the browser would be useful, for watching online video on the TV.  Do the network sites, hulu.com, etc block browsers that are in a device that is typically connected to a TV?  I seem to remember that they were doing that a while back (which I found silly, since a laptop can be easily connected via HDMI to a TV, and the simple fact that you'd think they'd want people watching in any way, not turning viewers away) which kinda ruins what would be the main use I'd think of for a browser on a console.  I guess there's also video podcast networks like TWiT and Revision3 but we use the Roku for that.

33
That's definitely a good thing but I wonder how many people regularly use the browser on their game console.  I couldn't tell you the last time I used the browser on the Wii.  Having a screen on the controller helps but it still seems like it'd be pretty small and low res for using the internet compared to just using the computer or a tablet.  If you don't have either I suppose it's useful but most people have so many tech gadgets that are better for accessing the internet.  But either way, it's good that they seem to have done a good job on the browser.

TalkBack / Re: Agricultural Differences: A History of Harvests
« on: October 24, 2012, 07:03:01 PM »
Harvest Moon 64 was by far my favorite game in the series.  The gameplay was great, the story in the game was the best of any of the games in my opinion, and everything about the game built upon everything that was good about the original and made it that much better.  After HM64, the original is probably my next favorite, if only for nostalgia's sake.  A Wonderful Life had great graphics but the world was too small, the gameplay just didn't work for me, and the story was uninteresting.  And the bar wasn't interesting, something which was one of the cool parts about the previous games.  I know most people think very highly of Magical Melody but I could never really get into the game.

I haven't played either of the Wii games.  Any recommendations of which one to buy?  Animal Parade looks to be considerably cheaper on Amazon but I can't imagine finding either used for fairly cheap would be a problem.

Isn't the whole idea of wireless controllers that you don't have to deal with cords?
Even if you have a nuclear reactor powering your wireless device you're going to have to change the uranium at some point.

If someone wants to play over the 3-5 hour battery life of the Wii U pad then they're going to have to go wired.
Fair enough but no one ever had to plug their Wavebirds or Wiimotes into the wall to be able to keep playing.  Not saying it's a big deal and I can't remember the last time I played a game for more than three hours straight but it still seems backwards to need to worry about cords.

There is room for Print and online just like there is room for brick and mortor stores and digital sales.
Is there?  I just read that Newsweek is the latest publication to go digital only because the costs of producing a print publication are too expensive and it takes too long in today's digital age to get the product to the readers.  Look at how many newspapers have gone under, how many magazines have gone under, and how many of the print publications still out there are bleeding money like there's no tomorrow.  There may still be a market for print publications but it's going to be a very niche market at best.  I'd say that being in the print market today is kind of like being in the horse and buggy business at the turn of last century.

999 was my favorite experience on the DS and Virtue's Last Reward is the reason that I'll probably pick up a 3DS eventually.  The story in 999 was so good, the puzzles were well done, the character development was excellent, and I never saw the ending coming.  If VLR is on the same level, it's a must play game in my opinion.

Interesting.  I've never played any of the Pilotwings games but it seems like a game that could be fun and that seems like a fair price for it.  Anyone have any opinions on how well it has aged?

Well, personally I am a fan of cartridges. They are a lot more durable, have no load times, and are just nice to have.
Not necessarily. Some of my Nintendo DS cartridges don't work anymore because the pins have started to rust. Meanwhile, my copy of Luigi's Mansion works just fine...
I'd say that discs may be more durable, if you take care of them, but there's no doubt that the drives that play them tend to wear out a lot more quickly than the non-moving components that play a cartridge.

I guess it's worth it if you're really interested in the games at launch but there aren't any games that I'm really interested in the launch window outside of Pikmin 3.  I'm still not sure that I'm sold on the tablet controller revolutionizing gaming and also of how long third party support will last for the system.  I still have several Wii games I own that I haven't finished and a couple more I'd like to buy and more important things to spend money on, so at this point the Wii U isn't worth it to me.  If I had a surplus of money, maybe I'd pick one up, but at this point I don't see the value in buying one.

TalkBack / Re: 999 Receives Reprint in North America
« on: September 30, 2012, 04:00:18 PM »
I'd say your estimates for how long each subsequent play through takes are on the short side.  The second play through isn't that much shorter since you're basically making all of the opposite choices of what you took the first time.  After that they're fairly quick quick until the true ending but I don't think any of mine took less than an hour.  The true ending play through seemed like it took more than 2 hours, not in a bad way but it's longer than I expected.  I was playing it on New Year's Eve last year and it was almost midnight by the time I finished and my wife wasn't too happy about it but I couldn't put the game down.

I'd say to use an FAQ after at least two if not three play throughs.  By making all different choices the second time you'll almost definitely get a different ending.  I did three play throughs and got three different endings, then did the one you need to do before the true ending and the true ending both using a FAQ.  For anyone who does use a FAQ, you don't need a full walk through, there's a chart out there somewhere that has nothing more than what choices get you to what ending so it doesn't give any of the story away.  Also, there's a great interview with one of the designers of the game on the Aksys website that answers a lot of the questions about the game and at the same time raises more questions, definitely worth reading after finishing the game.

I know it's still fairly new, but how many of these Kickstarter projects actually result in anything worthwhile?  It amazes me that so many of these projects gets people to give hundreds of dollars with no guarantee of getting anything in return.

I liked NP back in the day but gaming magazines just seem irrelevant now.  Unless they somehow had a really close relationship with Nintendo and could get some interesting exclusive features, I just don't see the point.

One of the best experiences on the DS.  The story is as good as any game I've played, it really pulls you in, I'd lay awake at night thinking about the game and trying to figure out what was going on every night until I finally finished the game and got the true ending.  The character development in the game was excellent and the puzzles in the game were good.  I was a little unsure of how well requiring multiple play-throughs to get the true ending would work but it was really done well and added to the game.  Anyone who has a DS/3DS and has any interest in this genre of game needs to buy it now if they haven't already.

Once again. You CAN have your cake and eat it, too.
Completely off topic but I never got the point of this saying.  What would be the point of having cake and not being able to eat it?  Isn't it a given that if you have cake, you're going to eat it?

Nintendo Console Discussion / Re: Nintendo & Amazon
« on: September 19, 2012, 08:59:54 PM »
There was an article on another site about this a couple days ago.  Basically it said that Amazon was frustrated by the high number of returns that they were getting with the 3DS and how Nintendo was handling it, the fact that Amazon wanted to lower the price when the 3DS wasn't selling and Nintendo wouldn't let them, then let Wal-Mart reduce the price before anywhere else could, and finally because Amazon wanted the same deal Wal-Mart gets, as was mentioned by TJ.

Here's what the interview should have read like:

Kotaku: Be real Reggie, the WiiU is going to be a barren wasteland of nothingness by the end of this console cycle, isn't it?

Reggie:  You know it!  N64, Gamecube, Wii, it's what we do and we're not going to stop that now.  We might tell you know that there will be solid support until the end because you'll buy it now but wait a few years and BAM!, barren wasteland of Nintendo awesomeness, with a year highlighted by the release of Mario Party 12!

Seriously, Reggie could learn something from AA.  The first step is admitting you have a problem.  Continuing to claim that the last couple years of Wii were fine and grand gives no one confidence that they're actually going to put any effort into making sure things are any better in the future.  Just say that they've learned from past mistakes, worked hard to make a console that will be competitive for many years, and that the company will work with 3rd parties to make sure that the console has a full schedule throughout its life cycle.  Repeatedly bringing up Mario Party and how well Wii Sports and Wii Fit sold over the years does nothing to give gamers confidence in the console not being a dust collector a few years down the road.

The game definitely sounds interesting but the one thing that worries me is that it sounds like this game is a lot more fun if you have at least 4 players and some of the games wouldn't be nearly as fun with only one or two players.

TalkBack / Re: Casual Encounter
« on: September 11, 2012, 01:10:14 PM »
I agree that the 3DS is different since the casual handheld gaming market is slowing down with smart phones and tablets gaining so much popularity.  In that way, they really didn't have that much of a choice.  With the WiiU they do, and if I were guessing, I still think they're going to try to go after both the casual and core markets.

I haven't played Nintendo Land so maybe I'm wrong but I think it still could attract the casual crowd.  Maybe not to the extent of Wii Sports but I'm not sure they'll ever re-create that.  If the games are fun to play, I'm not sure that it matters if they know what Metroid or F-Zero are and it adds more for people who are Nintendo fans.  I could see it being their attempt to attract the casual crowd while still giving the core audience something they want and not what they feel like is a watered down casual experience.  I think Nintendo has to continue to try to attract the casual crowd because after the Wii and the fact that they're coming out early and are no doubt going to be under-powered once the next X-Box and Playstation come out, attracting enough of the core crowd to be successful would be a major challenge.

The only Kirby game I've played is Epic Yarn so I'm definitely going to pick this up sooner or later.  Hopefully since Kirby isn't as popular as Mario, it'll drop in price or be on sale at some point.
