General Chat / Re: iPad...meh
« on: February 08, 2010, 11:52:03 PM »
My first reaction to the iPad was 'meh' just like everybody else, but I've warmed up to it.  Give it one or two revisions and maybe a price drop (which you should do for all Apple products...actually all tech products in general) and I think there's a segment of the market that would really like something like this.  Even I would consider buying one...if it had Flash.  That really kills it for me.  Yeah I wish all flash would just hurry up and be replaced by HTML 5 but that will take a while.  In the meantime I want to play my flash games and watch my flash video.

As for the iTunes bookstore...maybe.  The iPad and the Kindle are being described as direct competitors and for all practical purposes they are, but really they are both designed around the consumption of different types of print media.  The Kindle is made for books and it has really perfected the experience of reading an electronic novel; you can take it anywhere, the battery last for fucking EVER, and contrary to LCD screens the E-Ink display actually looks better in direct sunlight and is really easy on the eyes.  The Kindle has some problems, however, and they primarily have to do with periodicals.  Newspapers, magazines, and blogs are simply not the type of thing you want to be reading on your Kindle.  It lacks the high resolution color screen for displaying images, and it lacks the interface and refresh rate needed for efficient navigation.  When you're browsing and scanning, and only spending a few seconds on each page, the Kindle becomes clunky and cumbersome.  The iPad solves all of those problems and should be great for reading newspapers, magazines, and anything else you don't read long enough to develop eye strain.

But just as a reader I wouldn't buy an iPad quite yet...the Nook will be available any minute now which at least has some improved display and navigation features, and a new version of the Kindle is on the horizon.  Plus sometime this month Amazon is opening up the Kindle Development Kit to foster the development of third party Kindle applications, which has me pretty excited.  The device has a lot of untapped potential.

So...what was I saying?  Yeah the iPad is not all that terrible if you develop the right mindset.  Multitasking is not a big deal if you use it the way it was meant to be used (iWork is NOT the way it is meant to be used, sorry Apple) and if you have a huge iTunes library it will probably be great.

Having never played a game in this genre and only having payed $5 for it, I am very happy with my purchase.  It's addicting, instantly accessible, fun to look at, and sync's my saves with steam cloud.  That said...well there's a reason I didn't even buy it when it was at $10.  I'm not too far in it but I've heard the environments and enemies are recycled too much and the other thing just gets extremely repetitive...plus it's only single player, which ultimately kills it.

But like I said, I had never played a game like this and now I'm positively pumped for Diablo III if it comes out before I die.  That's worth the $5 to me.

At $5 I couldn't pass it up even though I'm about 72% sure I won't like it.  Steam is sucking me dry.

http://games.on.net/article/7188/Modern_Warfare_2_shock_No_servers_or_mods_for_PC_version

Basically the PC version of MW2 will be a console port with shitty matchmaking and no mods.  Which means wonderful improvements like $15 map packs, no custom rotations, no server-based community, higher ping, waiting forever for a match, more dropped connections, and worst of all no multiplayer at all once IW says so since no independent servers will be around to keep it alive.  Look how long that sentence was! Disgraceful.

I haven't actually tried to get any songs when someone was visiting. Also I haven't visited your town KnowsNothing.
Well I haven't played in quite some time, and last time I did I ended up cutting down nearly all the trees in the town.  I had a grand plan for a complete town renovation but then I ran out of time and had to go back to school.  Now I can only play every couple of weeks at best...it's almost not worth playing at all.

I there's a chance my gates will be open at some point tonight but I wouldn't count on it ='(

Holding a dual shock with two hands is uncomfortable enough.

Edit: Screw you Black, now I need to add more content to my post.  Uhh...the button layout looks like ****.  I don't particularly care that the entire thing looks stupid, it's not like I'm trying to impress any chicks with my mad skills....but seriously those buttons combined with half a dual shock in the other hand sounds painful.  Honestly it sounds more like a demonstration at a board meeting than a final product.  Sony needs to think things through a bit more.

Steam's mentally challenged cousin Direct2Drive is celebrating its five year anniversary with a bunch of games for only $5.  Every Monday for the next few weeks they will be updating the list, and already there are some big games on there.

FOR INSTANCE:

Some Splinter Cell game
Chronicles of Riddick....the second one, which includes the first one
Prince of Persia, the third one with slightly less angst
Civilization IV

And a few more that are good.

...SUCH AS:

Sid Meier's Pirates!
Thief: Deadly Shadows
Farcry
Serious Sam Gold
Saints Row 2
BIOSHOCK

Five bucks makes even using D2D seem worth it!!

Harry Potter:

Spoilers, I guess.

Not sure what to think about this one.  It's probably my favorite of the HP movies, but that's not saying too much since I wasn't enthralled with any of them.  I realize a lot needs to be cut from the books to fit a time slot, but some of the things omitted really bothered me...The scene in the cave was very cool if not a little too short, but the ending on top of the astronomy tower was just terrible.  First of all I was really looking forward to the epic battle in the castle and extremely disappointed that the entire thing was just ignored.  Plus in the book Dumbledore immobilizes Harry during that scene, but in the movie Harry just watches from below...which I guess is nitpicking slightly, but it does change the scene's meaning quite a bit.  Plus the whole scene should have been more tense and emotional, and just felt...flat, and boring.  Including the funeral would have helped things out quite a bit, that was a stupid thing to leave out.  I don't really care about the omission of the new Minister of Magic though, they really had to leave all that out or else the film would have been way too long.

The pacing was horrible too, especially at the beginning; why even include the fact that the Muggle world is being attacked if there's only going to be one (two minute) scene mentioning it?  THOSE ATTACKS ARE SIGNIFICANT.  The entire point is that the entire world, both wizard and muggle communities, is at stake and it's up to Harry to save it.  The movies lack that epic atmosphere; it all seems too claustrophobic.  It's all about Harry and Hogwarts.  That was fine at first but we're coming up on the end of the series, it's time to move past that.

That said, the movie had a lot of personality and was quite funny at times.  The special effects were spectacular was well; the Quidditch match was incredible, as was the aforementioned scene in the cave.  The art direction and cinematography were also top notch (I loved some of the outdoor shots of the castle), and the acting has improved.  Like I said above, despite my complaints it is one of the better HP movies and worth seeing for fans.

So....uhhh....7/10?  I guess.  Needed much more Luna Lovegood though, seriously.

God I am such a nerd.

OH WOW.  There's money in bugs.  LOTS of money.  Like 60,000 per pocket type money.  I had no idea.

The trick is to go beetle hunting at night.  Just bopping around catching any old beetle has gotten me from around 20,000-30,000 each pocket full, but the real money is down by the shore.  My entire coast is lined with palm trees, and every beetle that appears on one of those is worth 8,000 each.  Combine that with all the other stags and whatnot, and a few scarabs or jewel beetles and you're looking at some real cash.  Plus when you're by the shore there's a chance to catch a shark, and when you're by the river you can catch a few eels.  SO MANY BELLS.

I <3 Knocked Up so very much, I must watch those extras.

I'm not seeing Harry Potter at midnight but I am seeing it at some point tomorrow.  I'm not the biggest Potter fan you'll ever meet, but strangely I've been hyped for this movie for a very long time...which is made even more strange by the fact that none of the movies so far have been spectacular...but THIS ONE WILL BE GREAT I CAN FEEL IT.

The L button issue is interesting.  Apparently it's a fairly common problem and it has to do with a weak or corroded connection or something.  If I seal my sexy lips around the button and blow the moisture from my breath can temporarily fix the problem...just like your old cartridge games!  The problem is I'm ultimately doing more harm than good...boourns.

My GBA games don't seem to work in my Phat no more.  Sometimes it won't load anything but the GBA splash loading intro whatever screen, and sometimes it recognizes the game itself as a "DS Option Pak" or something.

It's not a huge deal since I'd rather play on my SP with the upgraded screen anyway (the L button doesn't work on my Lite, so....can't play on that).  It's just kind of related to the topic at hand.  Sort of.

I'm so pissed the L button on my Lite doesn't work.  Typing this made me re-anger myself.

One time I tried using OxyClean on my carpet and something magical happened.  I watched as the OxyClean picked up the stain, drifted over a few inches, and placed the stain back down into the carpet.

It didn't clean anything (just moved it over a bit) but my god it was incredible.

next time you clean the carpet, just make sure you have "stain rag" that you can transfer the stain to.
problem solved. :)

Hahaha I did have a rag, it just happened so quickly and magically that I just stared at it in awe.  Unfortunately when I tried cleaning it a second time it did nothing.

I have mixed feelings about OxyClean.
