I don't know if I agree that Nintendo don't need E3. Certainly that's been true in the past with the Wii and DS. In their current financial position, however, Nintendo really needed to show to their core fans and crucially to their investors that what they had planned for the Wii U launch would be drastic enough to turn things around. I would argue that E3 this year was crucial for the launch of the Wii U, if not necessarilly crucial for the company generally. Nintendo has consitently stated that the intention behind the Wii U was to win back some of the core audience, and if that's true then E3 is biggest venue for doing just that.

I also don't believe that Nintendo has any other games (beyond those shown at E3) which will meet the launch window. It's very possible that they'll have more details about Smash Bros, or perhaps even hint at what Retro's working on, but the games we saw at the press conference are likely to be the only ones that Nintendo launches with the system.

I'd love to be wrong, but I think that if Nintendo had more to show, they would have shown it.

Interesting impressions Gui.

"those disenchanted with the NSMB series probably won't find here the significant changes to the visuals and game design that they crave."

That pretty much applied to me I'm sorry to say. A focus on collecting coins (perhaps least interesting thing about Mario for me) is not enough of a change to make this 3DS release interesting for me. I hope they Nintendo manage to surprise me, but I'm not feeling optimistic.

@ejamer - Me too. I decided to skip Rhythm Thief, as based on the reviews I just couldn't justify paying full retail price. Depending on reviews HOR might be my first retail 3DS purchase since Uprising. I really hope the online lives up to it's potential. I also hope the online isn't region locked, as I'd like to play with people on my friends list (many of whom don't have European 3DSs).

Reader Reviews / Heroes Of Ruin Demo impressions.
« on: June 07, 2012, 11:24:38 AM »

The demo for N-Space's Diablo-style action RPG was released in Europe this morning. As has become common practice with 3DS demos this trial provides a relatively small glimpse into the game and has a bizarre play limit (in the case of Heroes of Ruin 6 shakes is considered appropriate, 7 shakes and you're just playing with yourself).

The demo immediately drops you into the character select screen, with two characters on offer. One a forgotten member of the Thundercats (Vindicator), the second a roguish nomad (Gunslinger), each of which have their own stats; Might, Vigor (speed?) and Soul (Health?). As the Thundercats suck and because Clint Eastwood is the man I of course chose Gunslinger.

The quest included within the Demo tasks you with defeating a forest spirit who plans to use her undead legions to unleash war on the World of Veil. Short as it was, I believe the demo did a good job of giving an overview of the game. There are at least two optional objectives, for instance, that you can complete prior to making your way to the boss; the first being to collect materials for a special weapon, the second being to destroy a spiritual tree which is an additional source of power for the boss.

During the demo, I believe that I levelled up twice and this led to stat boosts and also allowed me to equip better equipment. As with Diablo and games of that ilk there are lots of equipment drops (much of which might not be usable by your class or at your current level). For those items you don't want or can't use, however, you can simply stand over an item and press down on the D-pad to sell it there and then, which is a cool little feature. Comparing equipment also seems to be relatively easy as selecting the equipment menu will bring up several options for different types of armors (i.e. head, shoulders, torso etc). In these sub-menus you will find all the relevant equipment for that body part and numbers will show in red, white or green to indicate stat differences (Red of course being a drop, green showing an increase).

There are also assignable skills in the game. As the Gunslinger I started off with a move called 'Explosive Retreat' which throws a grenade forwards as the character rolls backwards, which was quite handy, and another called 'Blaze Wave' in which the character dumps bullets from both handguns in a horizontally arching movement to cover as much area as possible. For this second move I was able to upgrade it such that enemies could potential catch on fire. I also opened up a third slot and purchased another skill which allowed me to lasso enemies, which usually slowed them down but could on occasion stop them in their tracks.

Overall, based on the Demo I thought Heroes of Ruin was promising. The one big dissappointment for me was that the game...well...it looks terrible. The character models are acceptable (not great), but the textures in the game generally are akin to those you might expect to see in an N64 game.

In my experience games which aren't the best technically can often look worse when in natural environments and outdoor areas. Perhaps because natural environments are supposed to be quite detailed, with grass, leaves etc. a game's visual issues can often be exaggerated when such areas are shown. I mention this because while in one of the few indoor temple-like structures found in the demo the game didn't look as bad. In other words, I hope that this demo is not representative of the game's visual capability generally.

I'll be interested to hear more about this game ahead of it's release next week.

Did anyone else play this? What did you think?

@syn4aptik - True, but usually in quite a predictable way. Without having played this upcoming NSMB it is of course hard for me to say, but the Squirel suit looks to be quite similar to the cape from SMW, and the baloon Yoshi looks to be a variation on the Propeller suit. I have never doubted Nintendo's ability to make subtle and meaningful changes to their Mario games, but for me at least it's a case of diminishing returns. As I say, for me different suits just aren't enough any more.

@C-Olimar - You would be right sir. I thought Sunshine was a great game. Not quite as good as the Galaxy games in my opinion, but great in it's own right.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo 3DS Software Showcase E3 2012 Livestream
« on: June 07, 2012, 09:04:34 AM »
There were definitely some games shown at this showcase or mentioned afterwards that I'm interested in; namely Paper Mario and Fire Emblem. The problem with this showcase, and indeed with Nintendo's E3 showing generally, is that we all knew these games were coming. For me there were no pleasant surprises. Even a little hint or two would have been welcome. Had Nintendo even hinted at a new handheld Star Fox, a new downloadable titles perhaps, or even a remake of Majora's Mask, they would have got their fans excited. Not only did we not get these new game announcements, we didn't even get a tease that these games would be coming. With E3 2012 now finished I know roughly the same amount about the 3DS release schedule as I did at the end of E3 2011. It's very dissappointing.

I just can't get excited for another NSMB. It'll probably be a fun platformer but new power-ups just aren't enough any more. This will probably be considered blasphemous by some, but at this point I'd like Nintendo to change the mechanics of the game, and make Mario feel different in the way he controls. I'd like them to experiment with Mario's momentum, gravity, traction etc. I'd also like to see Nintendo introduce genuine story elements. If Pixar can do silent protagonists like Wall-e than why can't Nintendo do the same with Mario? I guess what I really want is something different and new.

Latency may very well be a problem, but there's something to be said for Microsoft's Smart Glass as well. The fact that it could potentially support devices which are technologically more advanced than the Wii U gamepad is one such advantage. If you were using an ipad for instance you could be using multi-touch along with 'pinch' and 'spin' movements in a way that the Gamepad is incapable of doing.

TalkBack / Re: Friendcodes Not Completely Gone From Wii U
« on: June 06, 2012, 03:18:16 PM »
If the codes work in a similar fashion to the 3DS ones then I guess that's fine. The big question though is why? Friend Codes have got such bad press for Nintendo over the last few years you'd think they'd jump at the opportunity to create a new Friend system and distance themselves from Friend Codes. Even on the 3DS I didn't understand why the Friend Code persisted. Why is a code considered more secure than a username chosen by the owner of the system? I just don't get it.

I guess this is preferable to Nintendo having some sort of propriety solution. Still, if Nintendo are going to be encouraging people to download full retail Wii U games you'd think they'd provide their customer's with everything necessary to do so.

People are probably sick of hearing me say this, but ever since I saw the leaked photo of the Wii U gamepad a few weeks ago I've been saying that the position of the D-Pad looks like a bit of a stretch. I don't understand why they didn't just move it further left. Without having held it myself it's hard to say, but it seems to me like there's too much distance between where your left hand would naturally rest and where the D-Pad has been put. For me, playing a 2D platformer with an analogue stick is a no-no, but hopefully for those who would prefer it it can be included as an option.

TalkBack / Re: Wii Virtual Console Games Will Transfer To Wii U
« on: June 06, 2012, 01:46:17 PM »
This was quite important for me for the following reasons.

18 x NES = £63
27 X SNES = £132.30
10 x N64 = £70.00
8 X Turbo Grafx = £33.60
9 X Mega Drive = £44.10
29 X WiiWare = £203.00
Total = £546.00 (roughly $845.60)

Having spent all this money on digital games I really didn't want to have them languish on my Wii (which I intend on boxing up once I've played Rhythm Heaven Fever, which is released soon in Europe under the name Beat the Beat). I still haven't decided that the Wii U is for me, but if i do, it's reassuring to know that these games will be coming with me.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U and 3DS Mario Games Will Not Connect
« on: June 06, 2012, 01:53:42 AM »
Releasing two 2D Mario platformers within a few months of each other always seemed dubious to me. Especially since 3D Land is such a recent memory as well. With three Mario platformers potentially being released within the span of 12 months, consumer's appreciation of these games, in terms of the worth that they place on them, will inevitably decline (this being distinct from the quality of the games themselves). Nintendo's best bet at avoiding this depreciation would have been to have the two upcoming Mario games connect up to each other in some fashion, as this would give an appearance of value added. Without any link up I personally feel the games are less appealing. I'm sure they'll both still be great platformers, but it's a shame that after all these years of promise (GBA & Gamecube, DS & Wii), Nintendo still hasn't provided a convincing argument for handheld and home console communication.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of Pikmin 2's caves (particularly given that they were randomly generated). I'd much have prefered that the treasures be hidden across the overworld, which was far more pleasant and interesting than the caves below.

Just a couple of thoughts.

"real world" treasure like Duracell batteries or Soda cans weren't shown in Pikmin 3."

Maybe it's just me, but finding real world treasures was one of the best things about the original two Pikmin games. Of course, we can't yet rule out the possibility that Pikmin 3 does have branded items like bottle caps, cans and batteries. I really hope it does though. Olimar and his ship describing these items with an other-worldly eye and trying to guess as to what they could be used for was the funniest part of the original games for me.

Are the Rock Pikmin really necessary? Weren't the Purple Pikmin already large and heavy?

I really hope that what they've shown so far is just a glimpse of one of many environments. I'd really love to see Pikmin 3 go crazy. I'd like to see more inside areas like those seen in Pikmin 2. How about having Olimar's companions explore a fridge, a car boot, a science laboratory? Why not go crazy? It might also be pretty cool to see humans, perhaps as a danger that needs to avoided ala 'Finding Nemo'.

The unveiling of Pikmin 3 wasn't particularly exciting, but as a huge of the series I'm really looking forward to seeing more of this game. This is no slight against either series, but it says alot about Nintendo's E3 showing this year that Pikmin 3 and Paper Mario: Sticker Star were the best things shown (by which I mean, they're relatively known quantities). Had Nintendo had a Star Fox, an F-Zero, or better yet a new IP (NintendoLand doesn't count) I think many fans would have been a lot more satisfied.

« on: June 05, 2012, 02:50:59 AM »
I'm dissappointed to hear that it doesn't have analogue triggers. I'm also kind of dissappointed that it's apparantly as lightweight as the CCP, as I'd prefer a bit of heft to my controller. I'll withhold judgement though until I'm able to try it for myself.

One thing I'm still worried about (both for this controller and the Wii U Gamepad itself) is that there seems to be quite a distance between the left-hand edge of the controller and where the D-Pad is located. Just looking at where I might expect to place my hand on this controller and thinking about reaching for the D-Pad seems like it might be awkward. Can you confirm that this is not the case?
