It's not a big deal, but Pikmin is essentially a strategy game and strategy games can make for some exciting competitve multplayer. It's a shame they couldn't find a way to make it work.

I've put maybe 80 hours into it, mainly because I'm being completely obsessive and reloading the level whenever I lose someone.   Or lose treasure.  Or fail to recruit someone.

That's a dangerous and maddeningly frustrating path to go down. I played Radiant Dawn that way, and I think that's one of the reasons why I didn't enjoy it all that much. If you enjoy playing that way though, all power to you. I just don't have the patience.

With Sacred Stones I tried my best to avoid deaths, and on a few occasions when I made a stupid mistake I would restart in order to save a character; but if I lost a character in a way which felt righteous, or perhaps if the death felt symbolic or affecting in some way, then I would live with it and move on. My last battle in Sacred Stones was an absolute blood bath. I didn't choose to bring in my strongest characters necessarilly. I chose the characters I wanted to have by my side, not the ones who hit hardest. It was pretty epic.

I wouldn't have called myself a fan of Fire Emblem up until I played Sacred Stones for retroactive. Now, I'm really looking forward to Awakening.

I'm actually not a fan of Kirby generally, but I really enjoyed Dream Course and Epic Yarn. It's a shame they weren't a little more adventurous (see what I did there?). Had they included more of the weird and wonderful Kirby themed spin-offs I might have been interested, as those tend to be the best Kirby games for me.

Caterkiller raises a good point. Apple have built up such a cache of goodwill among consumers and fans that with the latest iPad they didn't even feel the need to number it. It is simply known as the new iPad.

There are important differences, however, between apple products and the Wii U. Consumers have been groomed to expect a new iphone or ipad each year, and while aesthetically the differences are minimal, Apple usually do a pretty good job of communicating why their new model is better. With consoles, however, casual gamers are not groomed to expect a new device in the same way as they are with mobile phones. With video games the general consumer probably does not concieve of console cycles or generations, they simply plonk money down for a new system when they see cool games that aren't available for their old one.

I would argue, that the Wii U console looking aesthetically like the Wii isn't the major problem. Neither is it such a big issue that they've continued to use the Wii branding, Wii logo and Wii remote (although all three of these things compound the confusion surrounding the Wii U). The big issue for me is that Nintendo have not made a convincing argument that the Wii U is a generational leap forward. The best way they could have done that would have been with exciting new titles. As much as I love Pikmin, Mario platformers, Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, and Nintendo-themed mini games collections (well, maybe not the last one), they don't exactly scream 'shiney new system' to consumers.

I'm actually going to be bold here and select a Nintendo game. I don't think we'll be getting Mother 4. I know that sounds crazy, but I just get this feeling.

True, learning the tables by yourself can be fun. However, there are probably quite a few people like myself who never played pinball growing up and for whom much of the intricacy of these tables may be hidden a little too well. I'm not suggested that a guide be included which would simply tell the player how to achieve a high score, but rather that some of concepts and ideas be explained a little better just to give those with less pinball experience the tools they need to achieve a better understand of the tables.

I had hoped that they might include a more involved virtual guide for the tables. As much as I enjoyed the original Zen Pinball, I thought the static images and descriptions were not enough and I often found myself not understanding what I had to do in order to initiate certain phases or challenges.  I would have found it useful for an actual realtime guide to be included for each table to familiarise players with the various sections of the table and explain some of the best ways to build multiplyers etc.

Nice impressions.

I too chose not to purchase the PC version as I wanted to play this with a D-Pad. I feel like I waited forever for the Wiiware release, but I'm glad that it's now coming to Eshop. I really hope Nicalis work hard to try and get this released in Europe sooner rather than later. The delays for Cave Story in Europe were just ridiculous.

I'd like to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt and just assume that NSMB2 has layers of complexity and hidden value that they're just not showing us yet, but the truth is that they've failed demonstrated this. Based on what I've seen and what I've heard from impressions like these but also from Nintendo themselves, it seems like NSMB2 is just another NSMB game except with a new focus on collecting coins, which doesn't sound interesting at all to me. I'll reserve judgement for the time being, but this is the first time that I've found myself bored by a newly announced Mario title.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What are your three favorite 3DS games and why?
« on: June 09, 2012, 08:22:45 PM »
1 - Super Mario 3D Land - I went into 3D Land thinking it would be slow and derivative. I was wrong. This is not only the best portable Mario game ever made. It's probably among my top 5 Mario games ever made thanks in large part to it's unique combination of 2D and 3D gameplay.

2 - Mario Kart 7 - I do appreciate that MK 7 is another generic Mario Kart game, but having played it for around 40 hours online with my sister and a few friends I can say that it's a fantastic version of Mario Kart with some great tracks and a slick look. It's the game that keeps on giving.

3 - Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition - Chock-a-blocked! Sure, it's a port, but it's also one of the best fighting games ever released for a handheld. Unlike several other releases during the launch window Capcom decided to implement as many features of the 3DS as possible, making this a must own for those who subsequently became known as ambassadors. The online in particular was pretty awesome.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: People Need To Stop Bitching

The internet can seem overly negative at times, but I have to say in this particular instance I would argue that most of it is warranted. Fortunately there are a handful of places like this forum where we can discuss, debate and criticise without resorting to 'bitching'. I'm perhaps among the most critical of Nintendo's E3 showing this year, but the difference between bitching and being critical I think is the manner in which you vocalise your opinions. It's the hyperbolic statements and rhetoric (both positive and negative) that gets on my nerves.

I've only played the European Demo and I did play as the ranged character. I had problems of my own with the game but certainly didn't notice any sluggishness in terms of maneuverability, at least with Gunslinger. You can check out my impressions on the forum.

Nintendo Gaming / Post-E3 anticipation levels.
« on: June 08, 2012, 05:29:00 PM »
Pikmin 3

I love Pikmin. Having never played the original or it's sequel on the Gamecube I was delighted when both games were updated with new controls and released on Wii in 2009, and since then the prospect of a Pikmin 3 has excited me greatly. With so much anticipation, all Nintendo had to do was show me the game, and to be honest that's pretty much all they did. Sure, they didn't show any real world brands or products (one of my favourite aspects of the originals) or any new environments, but by hinting at a more involved multiplayer and showing a pretty cool centipede boss it was enough to stoke my interest even further.

New Super Mario Bros. 2

I'm far from the biggest NSMB fan, but even I was willing to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt. My main hope (as distinct from expectation) had been that Nintendo would introduce a novel new twist. Something which would bring genuine change to the series as the Galaxy games and 3D Land had done. At this point of course it's difficult to say whether or not the focus on collecting coins will bring any genuine changes to the series, but based on what was shown at the conference I'm not encouraged.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

I can't say that Luigi's Mansion 2 had any huge surprises at E3 this year, but enough was shown to leave me with the impression that this game will be a good showcase of what the 3DS can do. The lighting looked fantastic, the environments seemed atmospheric in a lighthearted sort of way, and the Luigi's reactions to...well...pretty much everything were hilarious. I'm excited to see more.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

Paper Mario has been a series which I seem to praise and criticise in equal measure. I fell in love with the N64 original, with it's art style, it's writing and it's systems. The Thousand Year Door was a step forward in many regards, featuring a more complex battle system and an even crisper visual style. I did think, however, that it was a little too slow at times and it's story and dialogue too wrought (albiet usually funny). Following that trend, I wasn't really a fan of Super Paper Mario, which was packed to bursting with tedious sections which went on far too long and superfluous dialogue. The announcement at E3 that you will no longer level up by defeating enemies, but instead by using stickers, is slightly worrying. I don't know enough at this point, however, to tell whether or not the game will follow in the footsteps of SPM and move even further away from the RPG mechanics that made the first two games so great. So for that reason I am neither less nor more excited. I would describe my expectations as cautiously optimistic.

These are just a few of my adjusted expectations coming out of E3. Which games have you become less or more excited about?

why take time and effort to show and announce something that will not be out in months.

I think Nintendo's performance at this year's E3 answers your question for you. Why take the time to show games which are still in development or won't be out for months? Look at what's happened over the course of this week. Gamers and the press went into E3 with a lot of excitement and anticipation for the Wii U, and have left with a bitter taste in their mouths. By opting not to unveil games which are in the works Nintendo have not only squandered the hype which had built up among gamers, they have also failed to demonstrate to people why they should want to own a Wii U. This was Nintendo's big opportunity to put their flag in the ground as far as core gamers go. To make a statement. In an industry as competitve as this, Nintendo can't afford to play coy.

At least the coins serve a purpose now. In older Mario games, they were just there for the hell of it.

Maybe Mario is collecting coins to help pay off the Mushroom Kingdom's national debt; perhaps Peach refuses to implement any austerity measures within the Mushroomian government.

Maybe Nintendo are just so desperate to make up the losses they've seen over the course of the last year that it's beginning to show in their game design?

I really wish this was coming out on Wii.

you don't want a reason to give people not to get a Wii U.

That's exactly what I want. With the exception of Pikmin I haven't seen anything on Wii U that has piqued my interest. As a result I'm probably not going to be buying Wii U at launch. As a huge Pikmin fan I'd love to play this game but I can't justify the cost of the system for one game alone.

I'm excited to see more of this game, but I really hope that it's not as brutally difficult as Hatsworth. I adored Hatsworth but it was difficult in a really frustrating way. To this day I still haven't finished it.

Why would I want to collect 1,000,000 coins? I watched the Nintendo video earlier where Iwata spoke with the developer of the game and he talked about the idea of collecting coins. I'm still not exactly clear on what that's supposed to bring to the table. I mean does anyone actually care about collecting coins in Mario? I tend to play Mario at full throttle with the run button always being held down, so the idea of methodically collecting coins and bopping bricks just doesn't sound fun.
