TalkBack / Re: Super Mario Bros. Deluxe Review Mini
« on: February 04, 2014, 12:10:06 PM »
I already have Super Mario Bros as an ambassador, so although I will be picking this up for free as part of the Network ID promotion I'm not really anticipating it. Plus, as great as SMB was, I really have exhausted that game. Throwing additional coins and eggs into the mix really isn't a big draw for me.

What I wouldn't do for some interesting GBC and GBA games.

General Gaming / Nintendo the Narcisst
« on: February 04, 2014, 11:26:30 AM »
As a company who create video games Nintendo has many laudable qualities and one could argue that it's most admirable trait throughout it's existence has been it's willingness to put the entertainment of the player above all else.

Regardless of whether or not it's true, there is a perception amongst many gamers (longstanding Nintendo fans in particular) that Nintendo is more benign and less callous that it's competitors. Indeed, it's easy to see how Nintendo may have come to engender such opinions. Nintendo's insistence on not releasing a game until it's been polished to a gleaming shine stands in stark contrast to many AAA games released this past year, Nintendo games tend to offer wholesome fun that entertain all ages rather than M-rated 'splatterfests', and even the public faces of the company are likeable, jovial people who really seem to love video games. Indeed, Nintendo themselves seem to appreciate that their personalities are well liked, which is why Nintendo Directs were introduced to add an extra dollop of delightful to the already adorable ice cream sundae that is Satoru Iwata. My only worry is that Nintendo may have at some point along the line began drinking their own kool-aid.

From an outsider's perspective it can often seem like Nintendo react to events in quite a lackadaisical manner, almost as if those in management have bought into the idea that they are somehow uniquely equipped to brave any storm. This is, in fact, a narrative which has been put forth by journalists who cite Nintendo's unparalleled stable of recognizable characters, it's expansive 'war chest' which was bolstered significantly by the success of the Wii and DS, and it's historically uncanny ability to see an opportunity to zig when the rest of the market is zagging.

Some of which is up for debate, but what cannot be disputed is that Nintendo is now facing a bigger challenge than ever before. As the video game market has expanded it has also fragmented. Not only has the Wii U failed to lure in those casual gamers that purchased a Wii, it seems increasingly clear that the Wii U is also failing to draw back a significant segment of Nintendo's usually stable fan base. Reams have been written about what Nintendo could or should do to course correct, some of it informed, much of it not (you can lump this post in the with the latter category), but most pundits agree that Nintendo's current approach is not working and that the company ought to be taking reasonable but decisive steps to change their current business model. Which is where we come back to Nintendo's self-perception. Will Nintendo's own values allow them to take the steps needed to turn the situation around? Or is the company too in love with the idea of 'Nintendo' to take a surgical knife to itself.

After all, Nintendo has always tried to present itself as conjurers rather than business men, a dedicated troupe of expert entertainers seeking to dazzle you with tricks that cannot be replicated by other performers, competitors who, of course, lack Nintendo's magic powder, it's secret sauce...the 11 herbs and spices. This fanciful image of Nintendo, one which many fans seem to identify with and which Nintendo in no small part helped to promote, seems so incongruous with modern developments in how video games are built and sold. Which, I guess, is part of the appeal. Nintendo doesn't really seem to co-exist alongside terms like 'micro-transaction' or 'Always Online'; the downside, however, is that neither has Nintendo exactly become synonymous with terms like 'online multiplayer' or 'cross-platform play'.

At this stage I feel like something substantial if not drastic needs to be proposed for Nintendo to turn around their fortunes, which might mean changing their business model and embracing other avenues for revenue. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Nintendo would then need to muster the desire to implement such a change, and it's on that second front that I feel Nintendo are likely to falter. Nintendo in it's current form just doesn't possess the desire or tenacity to make the kinds of swift and significant change needed. As a company it's simply too in love with itself and it's perceived place within the industry.

TalkBack / Re: Batman Arkham Origins DLC No Longer Coming to Wii U
« on: February 01, 2014, 06:09:35 AM »
I can't recall this ever happening before. Has there ever been a multiplatform game which sells a season pass but then does not deliver the DLC for a specific platform? It just seems odd to me that this DLC will be made available on other platforms but not Wii U. I appreciate that adding DLC to a game is not an entirely trivial effort, but I assumed that games were now built with future content in mind; In other words, that they're designed to be a platform for additional purchases. So, it's surprising to me that the ability to receive more content isn't baked into the porting process.

It's fascinating to me how having a little distance from a movie can give you a different perspective. I walked out of American Hustle thinking it was a really good movie, but in the days that followed my opinion of it began to sour. On the other hand, I walked out of 'Inside Llewyn Davis' thinking it was a really good movie, and now I consider it to be a great one. The difference I feel is that the latter gave me more to dig into, more to think about. It's the same reason I keep returning to films like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, or There Will be Blood. They're films with enough depth to let you swim around in. Try to dive into a film like American Hustle though and you'll no doubt appreciate the performances, but you'll touch bottom pretty quickly.

Luckily I couldn't care less about the Oscars.

TalkBack / Re: Mario Kart 8 Due Out in May Worldwide
« on: January 31, 2014, 07:19:24 AM »
Mario Kart 7 was a great entry in the series. I've never quite understood why some people were down on that game. The online was perfect (better even than Wii), the game looked better than it ever has before thanks to the great use of 3D, and the new levels were interesting, with lots of alternate routes and a nice balance of risk/reward.

Admittedly the single player still sucked, but that's pretty much to be expected with the Mario Kart series.

Mario Kart 8 looks to be another baby step forward for the series, with the graphics in particular seeming to have been a focus. 8 looks so much more detailed and crisp than previous Kart games (owing no doubt to the availability of HD resolution). I just hope some effort is finally put into the single player mode, otherwise they should just remove it entirely.

Wow, I completely forgot about the NFC functionality.

Wasn't there some Pokémon scheme in Japan that utilised NFC?

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Here's what I don't understand about Nintendo...
« on: January 29, 2014, 09:33:46 PM »
I think the answer lies in the fact that dedicated handhelds are much more popular in Japan than in the west. The 3DS has actually been served pretty well by Japanese developers, while western developers seem to have shifted their focus towards the smartphone market.

Japanese developers traditionally have been very capable when it comes to creating meaty handheld games with lots of content, but have struggled somewhat with the demands of asset creation in the last console generation. As a result western third party developers, many of whom greatly expanded their teams and outsourced much of the work of asset creation, seem to have come to prominence on the consoles (at least in American and Europe), while Japanese developers have remained crucial to the dedicated handheld market (which is pretty much the 3DS at this point).

When people bemoan the lack of third party support on Wii U, they're referring to the fact that neither region is really supporting the system. Anyone who complains about the 3DS lacking third party support is probably referring specifically to western developers.

Movies & TV / Re: Rate the last movie you've seen

Inside Llewyn Davis

Like some of the Coens' other films 'Inside Llewyn Davis' is at once both tantalising and inscrutable. The film, which is set in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 60's, is essentially comprised of a collection of scenes in which friends, family and acquaintances of the titular folk musician Llewyn proceed to put him down at every opportunity. All the while Llewyn passively floats between his family, his musician friends, his intelligentsia benefactors, and his aging ineffectual manager.

The themes of the film are very much open to interpretation but the general story revolves around Llewyn's passivity and his fear of change. Being a folk musician seems to be the only decision that Llewyn has ever made, and as a particularly unassertive character he is not inclined to change course. Not only does he fail to acknowledge the other options available to him, he also seems unwilling to take actions in pursuit of his own chosen goal of being a musician. The result? A talented musician who is heading no where.

Which is where the cat comes in.

Early on in the film Llewyn, after having spent the night in his benefactor's uptown new York apartment, unwittingly let's free a domestic house cat. For me this story became the through thread of the film. Ulysses (a male cat with a scrotum) represents several themes throughout the film; in escaping Ulysses abandons the comfort of the apartment for the cold winter of New York, which is nicely contrasted with Llewyn's own fear of change and his hesitance to leave the comfort of the familiar behind. At one point Llewyn asks a fellow musician to leave the window open in case the cat returns, again betraying his own tendencies to return to where he has been rather than move on. Later on in the film it is revealed that Llewyn has in fact being looking after a similar looking but different cat, which culminates with Llewyn locking Ulysses' imposter in a car by the side of the road. Not only does Llewyn seemingly resent this new cat (did I mention Llewyn doesn' like change?) he also no longer wants to bear responsibility for it.

Other examples of Llewyn's fear of change.

  • Despite losing his musicial partner Llewyn continues to play their songs minus the harmony.
  • It is revealed that Llewyn over the years has paid for several abortions and is quite comfortable with the process of arranging one. He is devasted when he finds out that one of his sexual partners did not proceed with the appointment and carried the baby to term.
  • Llewyn quite literally comes to a crossroads and has the option to go visit his child, but instead keeps driving on the road he's on.
  • Whilst a certain Bob Dylan is playing a set at a venue that Llewyn has played countless times before, Llewyn is outside in a gutter unaware that the folk scene is about to pass him by.
  • John Goodman plays an obscure Jazz musician with whom Llewyn takes a car journey to Chicago. Goodman's character is nasty and abrasive and seemingly takes a kick out of putting what he considers lesser musicians down. It is gradually revealed that Goodman's character is an ill, lonely, and possibly delusional drug addict. A glimpse perhaps into Llewyn's future? Despite this warning, however, later in the film Llewyn in fact imitates this character when he begins shouting angry insults at another musician whilst she is on stage

As with other Coen brothers films I suspect there's more to this movie than one viewing can reveal, but my first impression is very positive. I will admit that I'm inclined to enjoy this genre of music and the setting definitely interests me, but with a great look, great music and great cast 'Inside Llewyn Davis' is at the very least another quality movie from the Coen's.

As for putting them on the eShop, how simple it would be would depend on how much they want to do with them. Nintendo tends to be a bit perfectionist in this regard, as evidenced by the lengths they go with Virtual Console releases.

Being from Europe I would have to disagree that Nintendo is perfectionist when it comes to virtual console. The 50hz debacle was completely avoidable and would have required a minimal amount of work.

Still, I hope you're correct and that the reason we aren't seeing GBA and DS games on eShop is because Nintendo wants to ensure quality. Unfortunately the history of the Virtual Console leads me to believe that Nintendo is merely incompetent when it comes to managing their back catalogue.

I'm all for releasing DS games on the 3DS eshop, but I doubt it would be as easy as simply putting the games on eShop. For one, I actually think the backwards compatibility on the 3DS is pretty crappy. Most of the DS games I've tried on 3DS don't look so hot due to the way they're stretched to fit the top screen. Playing them in their native resolution also isn't ideal because the image size is reduced, resulting in quite a lot of squinting.

I really didn't have anything to contribute yesterday. Day one votes are just guess work, so I opted to withhold my vote until I had something to work with. Based on yesterday's machinations I have the following observations.

Stratos votes Stevey
pokepal148 votes Mop it Up
pokepal148 then quickly changes their vote to Stevey

This could be a bit of misdirection, a ploy to obfuscate what might be an attempt to channel votes towards a townie.

That's one possibility. Another is that not enough people have shown up yet for us to find our bearings, which always put's the mafia at an advantage.

I actually think the latter is the more likely and that we're simply fumbling in the dark at the moment, but as I have nothing else to work with I'll stick with my gut and, for the time being at least, vote pokepal148.

I should also remind people that I was right about Spak-Spang in the last game (although my reasoning was flawed) and got killed for my troubles.

I will say, though, while it doesn't really count, that I'd really like to see a sequel to Ocarina of Time 3D in the form of Majora's Mask 3D.

This. If Majora's Mask were given the same technical treatment that OOT was, it would really make that game shine.

Try not to worry. I'm sure that the reveal for Candy Kong and Lanky Kong is just 'round the corner. 'Cause everyone loves the extended Kong clan am I right?!
