The latest Bundle is perhaps the most appealing yet. I've been meaning to play all 4 of those games.

Quoting people who appear on podcasts never makes them look weird. Just look at The New Yorker's excerpts from the Bombcast for proof of that. Their sophisticated discussion of face stabbing really presented them in the best possible light. ;D

"What determines what a system is ultimately is what you do with it, and what Nintendo does with their systems is, them, it is an outward expression of their philosophies as a company...it is an expression of who they and the character that they create around what they view as their fundamental reasoned art...So I want them to continue to be able to produce what they view as their unique perspective on creating the experience you have. I think the hardware itself, the actual nuts and, well, there's no real nuts and bolts, but you get the idea, the expression nuts and bolts in that case, that make up the hardware is a relatively irrelevant component. I think you want to have stuff in there that's relatively easy to program for, but ultimately it ends up with, ultimately that it's just because that makes it an after thought, you don't have to worry about it. I think once you introduce the complexity of having to consider it you end up with the system that, I mean, you really have a good example of that last generation not from the Wii but from the PS3 where a lot of the ports were originally Xbox 360 games, and PS3 ports have issues...It's making a system where the hardware inside is more or less just there, you don't have to worry about it, you can then build whatever kind of, ah, the interaction components that you want, that make your company unique, you can build that on top of it...Ultimately everything from the user interface down to whatever crazy controller that their R&D division has designed that particular year, is all part of that same arc of the user interaction that is where they can characterise..."

James, buddy, what the hell? I must have listened to that stream of consciousness at least three times in an attempt to comprehend what it is you're trying to say. I'm still not sure I understand :P.

Another example of flaw in a great game: Majora's Mask's save system.  I love the game and its three day cycle allowed for some creative and cool ideas.  But that setup also made it very inflexible for when you could save, particularly since OoT let you save anywhere.

I adored Majora's Mask, but even I'll agree that the save system could be improved...say in a 3DS remake for instance.

NES Remix Remix - In which the original Remixed games are Remixed to make them fun!

Only joking. Just based on the source material alone this game seems far more appealing to me. Bros 3, Metroid, Kirby's Adventure? Seems neat!

Much like the 'Wii remote only' control scheme in Metroid: Other M, the 'Shake to roll' in DKCR felt egregious only because there were alternate controls schemes readily available (be it through using the nunchuck or allowing use of the Classic Controller) that would have been preferable.

It's not that the control scheme was broken, it was just that it was inferior to another scheme that should have at least been included as an option.

On a somewhat related note, it drives me mad that Nintendo don't include customisation options for buttons in their 3DS virtual console games. That fact that I can't use 'Y' to run and 'B' to jump really bums me out every time I try to play a platformer. Case and point? Super Mario Bros Deluxe, which I tried to play earlier today. Having 'B' to run and 'A' to jump made sense when the two button where horizonatally aligned, but now that the face buttons form a diamond shape it's just awkward.

'Y' to run and 'B' to jump just feels right, goddamit!

Also Punch-Out series is amazing and anyone who hasn't played excellent Wii version is a fool and enemy of himself.

As a big Punch Out!! fan this announcement made me very happy. Samus measuring Little Mac was also kind of hysterical.

I'm also very happy for Next Level, whose great work in reviving Punch Out!! will now be showcased in one of Nintendo's most important and exclusive franchises.

Nintendo loves re-selling their old games and why shouldn't they? Nintendo makes a killing from the Virtual Console. It may not be the best strategy, but it certainly looks like it's the one they're going for.

I actually agree. I just think the better strategy would be to sell loads of GBA games on 3DS, which has a relatively large install base, rather than the vain hope that making them available on Wii U to the exclusion of 3DS will push people to buy Nintendo's failing console.

That's the reason I keep bringing the issue up. I'm just flabbergasted that Nintendo seemingly have no intention of releasing these games on 3DS. It's baffling.

I can tell you're bored with this particular aspect of the topic though, lol, so I'll leave it at that.

This game looks incredible. Barring the existence of a new Metroid, X is probably the game most likely to get me to buy a Wii U.

Also, why would you ever want to leave the mech? I mean, I assume it overheats or becomes unusable if it takes too much damage or something, right? Because otherwise I'd be flying about in that thing constantly.

But, yes, ideally, there would be one VC between console and handheld. At the same time, how many times does that need to be said? We all f-ing think this.

Too be fair, how can you respond to this announcement/update without talking about how dumb the decision is in the first place? It's worth reiterating because it's so half-witted on Nintendo's part.

I also disagree with the premise that this was some kind of strategic decision to get people to take another look at the Wii U. If NSMB U and SM3DW can't move the needle significantly for the Wii U, chaining the GBA catalogue to the sinking ship that is the Wii U isn't going to do a damn thing. Nintendo need some kind of win right now, and having an entire catalogue of classic handheld games made available on a successful and viable handheld platform like the 3DS seems like a good place to start.

Wake me when these portable games are available on a portable system.

Nintendo's backward-approach to everything Virtual Console is sometimes astounding.

So Little Mac has a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde transformation!?

I've never heard of "Giga" Mac

I believe Giga Mac was a feature unique to the multiplayer mode in Punch Out!! (Wii).

General Gaming / Genre Deterrents
« on: February 11, 2014, 05:36:00 PM »
Playstation + is a great service. In recent months is has offered up a wealth of great games across it's three active platforms. As a new PS4 owner I've began to await eagerly any announcements concerning upcoming PS+ inductees.

What I've realised, however, is that even if a game is being offered for free (which, for clarity, technically these games are being offered as part of a chargeable subscription) there is no guarantee that I will give it a shot. The two latest additions to the PS4 plus library, 'Don't Starve' and 'Outlast', are proof that certain genres of game will simply never win me over. Non-persistent Rogue-like-likes and Horror games are simply too oppressive for me to deal with. I don't mind games being difficult or even stressful, but if they're oppressive I find it nearly impossible to even turn them on.

Such is the case with both of these acclaimed games. In the case of 'Don't Starve' I've played it twice and have not returned, and I haven't even dared attempt Outlast yet.

So my question is this. Does anyone else suffer the same crippling anxiety about playing oppressive games? Or, are there any other genres that actively deter you from playing them?

I look forward to the follow up story a month after the game's release on other platforms to acknowledge its cancellation.

This was my first thought also. Are Ubisoft really going to take a portion of the development team off other potential projects to continue working on a Wii U Port? I kind of doubt it. I think it's much more likely that the Wii U version has for all intents and purposes been cancelled, but Ubisoft wish to muffle any backlash or bad press until after the game has launched on other platforms.

Although, quite frankly I don't think Ubisoft has anything to worry about. I don't think any sane person would begrudge them their decision to cancel the Wii U version. I mean, who can blame them?

lol, yeah, at first Don't Starve can be pretty obtuse. I'll probably never dig into the full depth of that game, but it's a super interesting game. It's highly stressful, has a really oppressive atmosphere, and there are so many ways to die. It's a game that I respect but I don't think I'll ever love it.

I love the benefits of PS+ with the PS4 and PS3, downloading Uncharted 3, Shadow of Colosus, DmC, Bioshock Infinite, Boarderlands 2 for free :) seems worth it, been wanting to try those games out. If you want to add me my s/n is Jace2279 :) I find voice commands on PS4 to be a neat feature.

Yeah, PS+ is pretty great. I'm in the process of downloading Outlast on PS4. I still can't believe how Sony are able to pull off getting great games like Resogun, Don't Starve and Outlast on to PS+ as they're released. It's pretty awesome for those who subscribe to the service.

I'll add ya later.

Does Nintendo have a high opinion of itself?

Yes.

Do they deserve it?

Yes.

That's fair. I guess my question is 'can narcissism impede good business sense'?
