Nintendo Gaming / RE: "The Trouble With Nintendo"
« on: July 10, 2004, 07:07:26 PM »
Funny thing about Nintendo's image "problem."

Can anybody here tell when when Nintendo was first arbitrarily and unfairly labeled as "too childish for this market?"

No, not 1997.  No, not 1993.  1981.  When Nintendo was bringing Donkey Kong over, arcade operators were sure it would flop because the game was too childish and simple, and gamers wanted hardcore violence like MISSILE COMMAND.  True story.

Krispy Kreme and Starbucks put lots of preservatives and stimulants into their foods, because adults ostensibly like them.  Why can't Quaker put more preservatives and stimulants into their oatmeal?  They need to grow up and aim at a more adult market.

If anybody here still likes oatmeal, then they work for Quaker Oats.  And are also communists.

Retning games is probably a big problem for Microsoft right now.  The fact that you can mod them and install giant Hard drives that you can copy games directly to and play from.  The only way MS can punish these pirates is to block their Live! accounts. A pitiful attempt if the pirates were those excluded from MS Live! because of a pointless broadband-only policy, or those that have absolutely no intention of going online in the first place.

General Gaming / RE: Too Human exclusive to Xbox?
« on: July 02, 2004, 12:06:52 PM »
It is not really a question of bad games, Sgt.  Sega makes fantastic games.  F-Zero GX is the best game this generation, and those that disagree with that are just flat wrong. </bravado>  It's more a matter of what sells on the Xbox.  Silicon Knights - GCN fanbase + Xbox userbase + Xbox apathy for Silicon Knights + Xbox Apathy for Sega + Xbox apathy for games that do not feature some sort of online mode = Recipe for disaster.

In the NPD thread in GameCube Discussion, I said that Eternal Darkness outsold JSRF (A launch Xbox Title) and Panzer Dragoon Orta (which had rave reviews and a massive ad campaign) combined.  If The Twin Snakes sells at the rate it is, it will probably outsell Eternal Darkness by the end of this year.  If sales are what they are concerned with, then they are already doing better than what Sega and the Xbox can hypothetically benefit them.  So that means Denis has done something foolish, Denis is now a pawn of Microsoft wearing a big moneyhat, or this is all just bull-malarkey made up by a site to draw attention to itself.

If SK really wants to avoid bad sales, they should avoid the following things...

A. The Xbox (their style of game definitely won't sell there)
B. Sega (Struggling now, not so bad, but then consider...)
C. Sega ON the Xbox.

An SK-produced, Sega-published game on the Xbox is quite possibly the recipe for the worst selling game ever.

"threatens reverse engineering of videogames to promote interoperability and emulation by hobbyists and entrepreneurs..."

How does this patent stop hobbyists from doing anything?

ENTREPRENEURS?  So it should be ok for people to make money just by reverse engineering something that isn't theirs, and sell it as if it were their own?!  Sorry EFF.  I like your general message, but this condones criminal action.

TalkBack / RE: LivePitch Conference Returns
« on: June 29, 2004, 06:59:26 PM »
BTW I don't really like the idea of this conference...

I remember Marvel comics had something similar to this where they asked the fans of good ideas for comics.  The fans pitched, Marvel turned down every idea, cancelled the contest, and then started using the ideas they supposedly turned down for themselves.  I think that's how it happened.

Or....  How about a game where it starts like like your typical Console RPG, except the bad guy comes to the world with the power of Real Time and thus is able to win every turn-based fight just because the rules of typical RPGs do not apply to him.  You know, he can just move around and attack when he wants to instead of waiting his "turn" to pop up.  And so the Heroes must leave "RPG land" in search of the Power of Real Time, so they can combat thie evil terror.

I'm setting it up in my mind that this game is totally cross-genre.  It's totally overambitious and I may end up like Derek Smart.  Each land is a different genre.  And while I am generally poking fun at RPGs for being turn-based bore fests, in each "genre-land" I'll poke fun at the cliches and typicality of each genre, while trying really hard not to  follow that road.

In an inspiration from the original idea for Conker: Twelve Tales 64, I'll have the main characters costume change in each area, to of course, reflect the stereotypical designs of the genre, except platformers where I'll guess I'll have a "Platformer costume generator."  I can't think of the steretypical platformer...

I think the idea's neat...

Nintendo Gaming / RE: New North American (NPD) Sales Thread
« on: June 29, 2004, 05:31:20 AM »
In an interesting note, looking at those Sega totals, Eternal Darkness, a game much maligned for having had no advertising (although I distinctly remember seeing them) sold more than Jet Set Radio Future and Panzer Dragoon Orta Combined, both of which I totally rememeber having estensive ad campaigns, and one of which was an Xbox launch title.

Last Numbers I saw for ED were 256,862.

JSRF 97,360 + Panzer Dragoon Orta 122,170 = 219530

Nintendo Gaming / RE: XIII
« on: June 27, 2004, 04:38:39 AM »
The GC multiplayer on XIII is all kinds of screwed up.  I don't believe you can pick your character, at all.  It seems characters are assigned to controller ports.  L4M3!  The painful voice acting also irritated to no end.  They had no power, no umph, so I really question why they had it there in the first place.  Comic books don't talk, right?

As a side note, what is UP with Ubi Soft and cliffhanger endings?  I wouldn't mind it so much except that they always do it for games they probably have no intention of making a sequel to, like XIII and Beyond Good and Evil.

General Chat / RE: What do you think about EA?
« on: June 17, 2004, 02:15:45 PM »
I would really have no problem with EA if they didn't keep buying creative companies and ruining them.

I don't like their sports games that much.  That's ok.  I don't care if they keep making them, even if it means they're selling two identical football games each year.  I don't like their cookie-cutter brand-name reliant stuff.  That's still ok.   I don't care if they keep making those either.  I don't like the fact that some awards shows think Madden NFL 20XX is the best game that year.  Even if it perturbs me, it is still just their opinion even if it's irritating.  No problem.

It is when they buy out self-sufficient companies like Westwood to get their brand names in order to squeeze every last drop of said names until they either close down the studio for lack of sales or just assimilate them and change their name to EA <City>.  It also seems that you can't be your own company nowadays.

You can keep the casuals sports people, EA.  You can keep the awards.  You can keep your faux prestige.  Just leave Westwood and their ilk alone, please.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Great Series that need to be re-made or ported
« on: June 11, 2004, 10:03:47 PM »
My choices would be NiGHTS and Burning Rangers, for different reasons.

NiGHTS because I loved it and so did a lot of other people.

Burning Rangers because I believe it did not get a fair shake last generation.  It was a great concept, with delicious gameplay that was unfortuantely held back by the Saturn's capabilities, and unfairly restricted by a certain Sega exec.

Something about this list just reeks of money being passed under the table.  Everybody I talked to on the floor thought the DS was like totally neat.  And they had a "yeah that's cool, sorta" attitude toward the PSP.

Come on Ocarina Blue!  Spill more spiel about Tommy.  I'd love to hear it.

One thing I noticed over the years is that Tommy might be the video game version of Payola.  On Electric Playground or whatever his show is called this week, he was spouting MONTHS before their release that Blinx and Kung Fu Chaos would be THE games to get on the Xbox.  Really, though?  And he hates Nintendo games?

Does Tommy Tallarico really know what makes games good?

http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v240/Deguello/Herk.jpg

Yes that item in question is exactly what Tommy Tallarico thinks is wrong with the GCN version of the Sims.

If people in the industry actually think like this, the industry is doomed.
