I am not a strong-willed man.  I broke down and bought a PS4 with Assassin's Creed: Black Flag when I found one in the wild.  Currently downloading all the updates & PS+ Games.

Can anyone make suggestions on worthwhile launch games?

Duck Hunt

1. Would you reboot it or make a sequel? Reboot
2. Which platform: Wii U or 3DS? Wii U
3. Who would you want to develop it? Sega
4. What do you want to see (e.g. gameplay, characters, stages etc.)? Anything goes, but try to be reasonable.

  • Varied Level Types - Plains, Forest, Lake, Fictional levels (Zelda, Metroid, Kirby?)
  • Various birds & other animal targets (Deer, Laughing Dog?)
  • Optional game modes, including ones which have powerups for accuracy streaks, horde mode,
  • Online multiplayer - Both players play at same time, with face being displayed via Wii U camera while playing.  3-4 ducks fly by per round, for 5 rounds a match.  Player with most accurate shots win.

Kart Babies: For a character roster that needs as much diversity as it can get, I'm pretty disappointed that at least four of the playable selection is made up of baby characters. Unless there are 30 characters in the game, using playable baby characters seems like a lazy way to fill the roster out. I want Mario Kart, not Yoshi's Island DS Kart.

Lies.  Kart Babies is the best thing that was announced yesterday.

Have the Ice Climbers been announced yet?

If not, I hope she replaces them.  I'd be very pleased if they mix up the roster quite a bit.

The Warriors/Musou games get shat on in most western circles (deservedly so). But I view an occasional one as a guilty pleasure and am interested in how this game turns out. Also, I thought the teaser looked pretty slick and neat!

I'm inclined to agree with you.  I usually buy a Dynasty warrior game once in a console generation for that mindless fun, and for the same reason I buy 1 Madden game a generation (they don't seem to change that much between entries in the series).

Depending on what kind of critical response this gets, I could be interested in this.

I loved playing as baby mario and baby weegee in Double-Dash.  Hopefully they'll drive considerably different to the other playable characters.

  • MarioKart release date
  • Smash Bros tentative release month.
  • Minor update on Bayonetta 2 & X
  • A few minor e-shop announcements (VC scheduled releases, possible sale?)

To me, that's the best-case scenario of what they announce for Wii U, and I think i'm being optimistic when I say that.

One of the problems the WiiU has is epitomized with Wii Fit U.  To Many Options.  Simply put you can control a game with, GamePad, Classic Controller, CCPro, WiiMote, WiiMote + Nunchuk, Balance Board, etc.  That's a full what 5 straight up controllers with different buttons amounts and layouts.  Thinking about it.  Sort of intimidating for me.

Sometimes too much Freedom is worse than being limited.

That's a very good point.  Options are great for us gamers.  For non-gamers, more options means more confusion.

I don't think that articule disproves anything about what's been said either in the comments or on the podcast.  Technically, Wii U's November sales were a 300% increase over October, which makes it look more impressive than it actually is.  This article is using the same tactics to make a modest increase in sales look more substantial than it actually is.

We have to dig deeper and know the context of what's being reported if we want to get the full-scale truth from a Nintendo enthusiast website.

If there's a clear, better alternative, then maybe.

The problems is that most people & businesses are entrenched in Youtube, and it's also now a household name the way Facebook & Twitter is.

My obnoxious amount of text above aside, I think the smartest thing Nintendo has done with the Wii U so far is replacing Nintendoland with Mario & Luigi U in the box.

I want to just express that despite the apocalyptic tone, I REALLY enjoyed the discussion in the first segment.  A lot of people may not like the business talk, but the business climate for a video game company can often set the tone of what we can expect out of them going forward.
It was heavily expressed that neither Nintendo nor most people know what caused the success of Wii as well as what they’ve done to make the Wii U such a catastrophic failure thus far.  While I can’t claim to be a video game business expert, my background is in business, and I think that coupled with my interest in video games might allow me to provide some educated guesses.  Bear in mind that both the Wii & Wii U’s levels of success are based on several factors, not just one.  Apologies in advance for the block of text.
Wii Success Factors:
·         Wii Sports + Motion control - It can’t be stressed enough how critical this was to the Wii’s success.  You only need to see it to understand it because the motion control is tied into sports that everyone knows & understands intuitively.  This coupled with the general population making assumptions that it was an “active” way to play video games helped it catch fire outside of the traditional gaming market (parents, grandparents, nursing homes/retirement centers)
·         Perceived bargain pricing - $250 was half the PS3 & Xbox 360’s pricing at that point.  This coupled with you getting a game with the system not only made it an easy choice for gamers to add as a “2nd console”, but also a no-brainer for the large swath of non-gaming buyers who used it as a “Wii Sports machine”
·        Profitable from day one – Nintendo made approx. $6 in operating profit per Wii unit sold in 2007.  Because of this, it mattered less that 3rd parties rarely put any effort in a Wii version of the game, because a large portion of Wii sales went to people who were never going to buy anything else.  Even if the system sold at Wii U levels, it would be netting Nintendo profit.  This is a big deal for an industry that has adopted the razor blade strategy for some time (sell first razor at a loss, but sell replaceable heads at a healthy profit).

  • Clear & clever marketing campaign - Joke all you want, but the "Wii would like to play" advertising campaigns were clear, sometimes humorous, and straightforward about what you were getting with the Wii.  It said "this quirkly little console from Japan is coming to your house, and will provide a unique gaming experience at a reasonable price that you can't get from anyone else.
Wii U stumbles:
·         Jack of all trades, master of none – John offhand mentioned the Wii U has a similar problem the PS3 faced, in that it doesn’t have a clear messaging that’s easily understandable by the gaming market, much less anyone outside of it.  It’s a console whose game has several different input methods available, has a relatively confusing user interface, streaming apps that are less than optimal, a Tvii service that’s half-baked with no signs of improvement, and…
·         Iterative or Niche Gaming Experiences – Pikmin 3, Mario/Luigi U, Wind Waker HD, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, & Mario 3D World are all great games, but suffer the same issue of being too much like their predecessors.  Nintendo doesn’t realize that NSMB Wii was successful because of how long it had been since a 2D Mario game, and while the “U” games have refined them to be some of the best 2D Mario experiences, they’ve been released with not enough time between them.  New experiences like The Wonderful 101, and upcoming games like Bayonetta 2 & “X” are great for people who love these experiences, but aren’t games that’ll ignite the wider gaming population to buy-in to the Wii U.
·         Nintendo’s conservative nature – This ties directly into the above issue, but also involves Nintendo’s hardware/software choices.  The gamepad was the most risky venture they took, but this in of itself is borrowed from the DS handheld’s “two screen” strategy.  Nintendo has been so reluctant to dip its toes in the water of online gameplay, digital software, and other service offerings that their attempts seem feeble & antiquated compared to their competitors.
·         Speaking to the Choir – This to me is probably one of Nintendo’s biggest failings.  Nintendo has relied so heavily on Nintendo directs to announce everything.  The problem with this?  Only Nintendo acolytes invest the time to watch these videos, which means only Nintendo enthusiasts are informed of what Nintendo is doing.  I’ve stated on these forums before that Nintendo replacing their E3 presentation with a Direct wasn’t a big deal, because news outlets would still cover the announcements that came of it – I was wrong.  In addition to this, Nintendo hasn’t bothered to advertise the Wii U until this holiday season, where their messaging is simply “It’s the Wii U!  It’s not just a controller, but a new console!  Look, it has Mario!  Tell your parents you want one!”
I have a few ideas as to what Nintendo could do to turn the Wii U from a catastrophic failure to just a minor one, but don’t think most people here would have interest in reading another block of text.  I sincerely hope they do so, though, because if Nintendo ends up aborting this console after 2-3 years, I’ll have much less confidence in being an early adopter of their hardware offerings moving forward.

Math Wizard on Amiga was my parents' frail attempt at providing me educational gaming when I was young.

Other than that, this list has pretty much every education game I played as a kid.

Now excuse me while I go look for a way to play Odell Down Under.

TalkBack / Re: RUMOR: Wii U Sells Approximately 230,000 in November
« on: December 13, 2013, 12:50:30 PM »
I'm not certain if it's more Mario, or the fact that Nintendo has finally started advertising for the damn thing, that Nintendo's finally selling Wii Us.  I can't see one show I watch on tv without seeing that Wii U Commercial where the girl is telling the kids on the couch how they'll convince their parents to buy one, specifically stating it's a new console.

Regardless, that seems like an abysmal number leading up into the holidays.  I really hope Nintendo doesn't exit the console space.  Wii U isn't without issues, but it's a unique console that in my mind has potential for some neat gaming experiences.

I'm starting to wonder if it would have been better for Nintendo to go the PS4 route - put all the cost of their console in beefy specs, and leverage the 3DS XL as the device for off-TV play like Sony has done with the Vita.

Khush reached out to me via PM early in the game, and while I was hesitant at start, his continual openness to share information was what swayed me to believe he was townie.

Man, Kudos to him, though.  He helped shape some of my opinions towards people who could be truly suspected as Mafia.  The unfortunate part is that most of the time was spent trying to vote not-Khush, coupled with it being a very, very short game.

Either way, people quickly thought that by day three, Khush had to go.  I went along with the anti-Khush vote of Insanolord eventually after initially choosing Spak-Spang, but that put us in the situation we found ourselves in now after Inanolord offered to sacrifice himself by removing his Khush vote, and Spak sneakily removed his vote, keeping it a tie.

In retrospect, I probably should have went along with the bandwagon and voted Khush out when I logged back in later last night.  With him being the only one dead and proven innocent, some of his theories would have held much more weight, with those left, and us townies could have maybe had one last chance to change the momentum.  Inactivity didn't help either.

I'm disappointed the game was so short more than the fact that we didn't win.  A big thank you to the host of this game for organizing and setting everything up.  I thought the theme and day summaries were both entertaining & humorous, and I had a lot of fun.  Look forward to the next game.

I want to keep the conversation going here.  The following people (not counting insanolord & Khush) in my mind should be seriously looked into:

Stogi - Has stayed inactive in the game, only to show up today, only doing so to post without any substance.  In my limited experience, Stogi has typically been sparse in posting, but never to this degree, and he usually will at least make a vote.  I find it suspicious he hasn't voted at all, but why should he?  No one is questioning him, so why would he bother sticking his neck out in public to be under suspicion.

Spak-Spang - if Khush ends up being Mafia, Spak's consistently verbal defense of him puts into high suspect.

Glad0s - Has had very limited posting, and only votes when it seems there's a fairly unanimous vote in place.  Like Stogi, since no-one is paying attention to him, has had no reason to be involved in the game further.

This is getting ridiculous.  The vote for the first few days have been "should we or should we not axe Khush" instead of looking for actual suspicious activity.  Townies are going to get slaughtered if we don't get our act together.

1921
In a way, I think a tie might work well for the townies.  I think one of them is mafia, and seeing how the cards fall by both of them going down might help clear up who to target next.

1922
Vote insanolord.

My Spak-Spang vote is no value added.  I don't think Khush is mafia, or willing to take the risk of him playing a brilliant con on us all.  I want to vote Stogi, simply because I wouldn't doubt him staying in hiding out of simply not having a need to implicate himself as mafia, but that would be another wasted vote scenario.

If both insanolord & Khush drop because of this vote, so be it.

1923
Something we could possibly bring our attention to:

We may be looking at an inactive Seductress. There hasn't been change in the voting so far, and it's not a one-shot role; it can be used every day. Of course, there is also the more probable chance that there hasn't been any need to use their ability.

Wouldn't be a stretch to look at someone like Stogi who just jumped back into the game, just a thought.

I agree that the quiet ones are suspect (I even suggested voting Stogi yesterday), but the issue is that the Godfather has to have been active (even if just speaking to their last log-in date), because there's been a hit each day.  An inactive (not logged-in) Mafia member is benign until they make their presence known.

1924
Wow, if Khush is mafia, then I feel very foolish.

It looks like the guillotine is already aligned iwth his neck at 4 votes.  I re-assert that if he's Mafia, then Spak-Spang is also mafia, and he's voting Khush because there's no way to save him today, and he wants to wipe the blood off his hands for future days.

unVote Spak-Spang.

1925
The day is running dry, and I won't be able to check here later.  I've decided I don't want Khush out yet, and voting Stogi hasn't compelled him to come out of the woodworks.

Vote Stevey.
