TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Releasing Classic NES This November
« on: July 16, 2016, 12:33:09 PM »
Cartridge support would only serve a smaller market than having the games preloaded.  Those cartridges are finite in quantity and very limited in availability and only people who collect them would be able to use it.

That would only be the case if it relied solely on cartridges. But there are still so many of those old carts still floating around that it would be more than worth it to include as a bonus feature along side those built-in games (which is exactly what the Genesis rerelease already offers). Seeing how all these games can already be played via the Wii Virtual Console, there's a plenty of reason to pass. But that little slot would easily clinch the deal.

This would be a must buy for me if it only had a slot for original cartridges... I just can't justify the purchase without it, since I have most of those games in one form or another and my NES still works like a dream (aside from one controller getting lost and the other's pad starting to go bad). It's a damn shame too, since those original shaped controllers would be perfect for playing Gyromite with my original R.O.B.... oh wait, R.O.B. wouldn't work with an HD screen anyways would he? Regardless, I'll still probably pickup the new controller as the parts should be perfect for refurbishing my actual NES controller.

I'm also surprised there's been no Fami-Mini announcement.  This is the type of thing that Japan would love and importers would love more.

Wait and watch them reveal theirs with a cartridge slot... which will be useless for importers here because of the different pin count... Then again, I might be able to get around that if I can manage to get my copy of Gyromite open.

TalkBack / Re: Zelda: Breath of the Wild Timeline Placement
« on: June 19, 2016, 08:04:07 PM »
One thing still bothers me about ALttP's ending-- it clearly says "the Master Sword sleeps again... FOREVER!"
Yet, the Master Sword WAS used again in the same timeline for ALBW. That seems like a pretty big mistake that could have easily been avoided if they had simply had you obtain its Lorulean equivalent instead. The point is, the story and timeline placements are complete afterthoughts. Chances are any patterns you find linking similarities to Hylian/Gerudo text, geography, etc. are completely random, and not by the design of the developers. Therefore, something in the final game will most likely end up contradicting everything you think you've pieced together.

TalkBack / Re: Possible Details About Zelda Wii U Emerge?
« on: April 10, 2016, 10:37:38 AM »
If this game really does give you the option to play as a female, then it's probably more likely that you'll be playing as Zelda than as a female Link. There's always been undertones of romance about saving the princess, and Nintendo isn't going to allow suggestions of lesbianism in the Zelda franchise. "Zelda" is the titular character and the name is indisputably female, so it's not like her gender could be changed to male if you went with a female Link.

TalkBack / Re: SNES Games Now Available on New 3DS Virtual Console
« on: March 06, 2016, 10:13:30 AM »
This is a pretty baffling move. It would make far more sense to release GBA titles on the n3DS VC instead. I can't understand why they're not-- so many SNES games were ported to the GBA anyway, and those versions where actually optimized to be portable. Since this is needlessly mucking up their tradition of keeping the handheld and console VC libraries separate, it could be a sign of intent for cross-purchasing for the NX... though why they wouldn't try to implement actual cross-purchasing here first to avoid future double-dipping is still beyond me.

TalkBack / Re: You're Star Foxing Wrong: A Game Design Rant
« on: February 21, 2016, 07:43:02 PM »
With all due respect, this entire debate is based completely on a false premise. Who says people consider Star Fox to be an on-rail flight sim? You and only you just to try to justify your premise which doesn't stand up otherwise. Not being on-rails has nothing to do with why Star Fox Adventures is a black sheep. It's a combination of the fact that it blatantly wasn't meant to be a Star Fox game-- all the characters not only feel out of place, but their here actions don't even make sense (in the SF64 ending, they turned downed Pepper's offer to join the Cornerian Army, so why the hell were they waiting around for Pepper to send them on missions? Not to mention Falco's completely out of character move of joining the army)-- and the fact  that the game is based primarily on foot. Piloting a vehicle is what makes a SF game an SF game, the moment you try adding on-foot elements, it fails.

Realistically not going to happen? You guys need to do better research-- GBA (in Japan anyway) and 3DS both came out around that time time of year so if there is a very real precedent for it... especially if it's a handheld, and the ambiguous way it said "Something NX" seems to be suggesting it won't be the full traditional console, which will probably come later.

It would really have made more sense to make the comparison with the GameCube version, then you wouldn't have had to reverse the video.

TalkBack / Re: Paper Mario Wii U Title In Testing?
« on: January 22, 2016, 08:59:19 PM »
If it's true, I doubt it's a new Paper Mario. Not with the Wii U at death's door. It's probably just Thousand Year Door HD: something they can just **** out in a few months.

I'm not so sure Wii U's death is quite as imminent as everyone's assuming. Sure, all signs to NX launching this year, but there's also a lot of hinting that branding will include both a handheld and console iterations-- I have the sneaking suspicion that only the handheld will launch this year and the console will come next spring at the earliest. Especially when you consider Wii U still has Zelda and Star Fox Zero in the pipeline, the latter of which could have been released in 2015 if they really wanted to (then just polish it later with post-release updates). The fact that they chose to push it back altogether tells me they're trying to string along a few releases across 2016 to keep Wii U alive until next year. That being said, it wouldn't shock if this truly were a new Paper Mario... then again it wouldn't shock me if it were just an HD port of an old game either.

TalkBack / Re: Twilight Princess HD Amiibo Functions Confirmed
« on: January 19, 2016, 02:40:22 PM »
"HEY GUYZ!!1! PAY2WIN AMIIBO!1!!1"

Being a smartass aside, it sounds like Great Fairy Fountain pt2. Nothing amazing. The biggest wallet in the original release was 1000 rupees (Giant's Wallet) and required a game long task. Now if this nullfies the bug collecting, then there is a problem, but "tapped at a certain time" probably means after you get the Giant's Wallet. In which case at that point of the game rupee collecting is pretty irrelevant because the major wallet busting stuff should be done by then. So overall I'm not impressed at all and this seems like a pretty minor use for amiibo.

It seems to me that "tapped at a certain time" is referring to when the player is prompted to scan the amiibo, as opposed to swiping it at anytime during playtime and expecting it to work. I have to assume the game will just have an additional wallet upgrade level that will just advance it to the next size-- if you haven't already completed the bug catching quest upon finishing the dungeon, you'll get the Giant's Wallet there and the Bottomless Wallet will just be the final upgrade whenever you get it.

TalkBack / Re: Baseless Speculation: Wii U's Last Stand
« on: August 11, 2015, 07:13:22 PM »
I'm not sure why you're all assuming the NX is the Wii U's successor-- they've given no indication whatsoever of what it is. Timing-wise it makes more sense to be the 3DS's successor. If it's their NEXT system and their next handheld hasn't been announced yet, it seems most logical to assume it'll be their next handheld. Rushing ahead to begin a new generation on the console front just because their current system is floundering doesn't seem like Nintendo's style.

Because Nintendo has shown no sign whatsoever that Wii U has a future post Holiday 2015, and the Wii U has been an abject failure. The 3DS could probably still coast for a year or 2. Nintendo's in no danger of losing the handheld market like they've been nearly shut out of the console market. That's assuming this isn't a hybrid, of course.
You're ignoring Zelda-- it's still planned for 2016. You can certainly speculate it'll either get moved over to NX or get a dual release treatment like TP all you like... but its current status indeed does indicate a post 2015 future until we hear otherwise.

WSJ: Sony’s and Microsoft’s consoles have far outsold the Wii U. What’s your strategy to come out ahead?

Fils-Aime: The time frame that these systems are sold is quite long, and right now we’re still at the very early stages of the current generation. The other piece I would highlight is this is a global business. Don’t just look at what’s happening here in the U.S. Look at what’s happening globally.

From a Nintendo perspective, we clearly have strength here in the Americas, we have strength in Europe and we have strength in Japan. That isn’t necessarily true of some of our more direct competitors. We’ve also said publicly that we are already hard at work on our next home console and that’s another element we’ll be talking about much later.

That certainly does seem to point to NX being their nest console... But it also says they're still at they early stages of the current generation, which strongly hurts the likelihood of it coming as early as 2016... and points back to my initial assertion that Nintendo won't be cutting the Wii U's life short.

Reggie literally said that they're working hard on their next home console in an interview with the WSJ around E3. Maybe he misspoke, but that's not the only sign that points to it being the Wii U's successor. You can argue that some of the evidence is tenuous, but it's far from a situation where we have no indication whatsoever of what it is. Nintendo does some dumb things, but I don't think they're foolish enough to put out a successor to the 3DS (which is fine even if it's not earth-shattering) before the Wii U (which is unequivocally a tire fire).
Acknowledging they're working on a new console in no way suggests it's the same thing as the NX. I have a strong feeling the NX will be the essential opposite of the Wii U-- a handheld based system that can stream to TVs. If so, it could fill the gap for the next couple years until they're ready for the actual Wii U sucessor.

Just three? That only makes a total of seven. The previous updates each included a total of eight costumes so there's most likely one more being left for surprise. If they continue their current pattern, it should be either Starforce Megaman or Megaman Volnutt.

I predicted from the very start NOA would hand this off to a third-party publisher based solely on the fact that it had "Devil" in the title. That being said, the "severe concerns about the game's quality" is clearly just an excuse.

Why does it have 5 video outputs? three of which appear to be composite, one rf, and one s video. No one needs that.

It's true no one would need that for a commercial model... Of course, since it was never released, this would have to be a development model, which very likely WOULD need multiple outs for testing purposes. Nevertheless, I'm still assuming this is fake-- the fact that he just happens not to have the power cords to turn it on, seems far too convenient.

Someone needs to do better research-- The game was ENTIRELY translated and completed before the sequel ever got started. The reason it never got released was because by the time it was ready, the SNES had already launched and trying to launch such a risky title on an obsolete platform wasn't worth the investment.

This is the EXACT same application that Miyamoto used to handcraft the original Super Mario Bros. levels back in the 80's. About time we got our hands on it if you ask me.
Um, no it isn't-- there was no level-editing software back then. They had to draw their designs out on paper first and then someone else had to manually write them into code form.

And, again, why was NINTENDO singled out when a gazillion games don't offer this.

Because Nintendo is seen as a conservative company and that automatically makes them a target to the media.

TalkBack / Re: Fire Emblem Fates Will Feature Same-Sex Marriages
« on: June 24, 2015, 10:33:56 AM »
Doesn't this game cover multiple generations?  If you go same-sex does that not happen then?  Adoption perhaps?

I thought the Tomodachi Life controversy was a little overblown.  A lot of games don't offer same-sex relationships so why was Nintendo singled out?  Also same-sex marriage is still illegal in many States.  You expect Nintendo to encourage breaking the law in one of their games?  If they put it in they would be making a statement about current laws.  That's controversial stuff.  That would be like having a character in a Nintendo game lighting a joint, something legal in some States but not all.  So I get why they figured that not having it was the more neutral position.  Had they put it in there would have still been an uproar, just from different people.

I only hope that this isn't handled as it was in Mass Effect 3 where suddenly a male friend of my character, that showed no signs of being bisexual in the previous games, awkwardly hit on me.  I understand the intention to accommodate all players but it can be done a little more seamlessly, no?

*face palm* Someone clearly doesn't understand how the law works...

In the context of same-sex marriages, being "legal" refers to them being specifically sanctioned by the government. It's not the same as with the traditional use of the word in which the alternative is a criminal act (like smoking pot). Here in the U.S., it is not, and never has been ILLEGAL for any same-sex couple to either be together or to declare themselves "married". In fact, the 1st Amendment guarantees the freedom of expression and assembly-- so, even though they may not be legally binding in every state, gay marriages don't actually break any laws anywhere in the U.S.

Who else do you trust to make a good F-Zero game? Slightly Mad Studios was already talking Project Cars for Wii U. Codemasters promised Dirt and F1 but never delivered, and were probably going to say they were just as busy as Criterion.

I won't lie, I don't necessarily know the landscape for developers whose primary function is racing games, but the artcile as ran implies Nintendo went to Criterion asking if theyd be interested in producing a demo under a constrained time table, Criterion understandably declined, and Nintendo went "oh well, don't care enough to extend the offer to any other studio".

Just let me have my Metroid: Federation Force moment!

Who says they didn't ask any others? They probably did, but they declined too.

.....this frustrates me.  If Criterion declined, why couldn't they have solicited other developers?

What you may not be getting is, this is merely saying they were looking at Criterion to possibly make a mockup video/demo for what a hypothetical F-Zero game running on the hardware could look like for demonstrative purposes. While such demos always have the potential to evolveinto actual games, they apparently weren't seriously looking to jumpstart an F-Zero project, so there was no reason to go searching for developers. Basically, what I'm taking away from this is that Nintendo simply casually offered to fund an F-Zero demo from Criterion if they wanted to make one. They didn't, so it ended there.
