VideogamerJ:

Timesplitters 2 just didn't "click" with me.  Didn't like it.

I will probably get PSO for the Xbox.  The 1st 2 months are free, and I already have an XBL membership.

I am seriously pondering "Skies of Arcadia".  A lot of people seem to like it.

General Gaming / Why do nintendo fans hate Xbox so much?
« on: April 11, 2003, 12:20:02 PM »
This topic is freakin' amazing.

After I've read all of these responses, I had to look back up and check the subject again.  And now I know the answer.  Hear me out.

The root of all evil is "excessive fanboyism".  All three consoles have them.  I just laugh when I read responses on other console boards, and most recently this post.  All I can picture is a bunch of kids jumping around on a playground screaming "mine is better than yours".   Freaking hilarious.  And sad.  It's like people have to "justify" what they have by pointing fingers and saying, "I hate yours because..whah wha wah whaaaahhhhhh wahhhh waaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (In my best Charlie Brown's teacher's voice).

I've been a member of a popular Xbox board for a long time.  Since 6 months before the Xbox release.  Nothing makes me more sick than to hear "excessive Xbox fanboys" speak out of their arse.  Putting down other systems, games, etc.  Excessively promoting the Xbox like they are Bill Gates' biatch.  It's almost funny.  But it's easy to get sucked into thinking like one when an "excessive fanboy" from another console says something like "The only good game for the Xbox is Halo", or "Xbox sucks", or "I won't buy an Xbox because of Bill Gates". That is my personal favorite.  Also on the other side, "GC is for kids, wah wahhh wah wahhhhwahhhhhwahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh"

I am an Xbox fanboy.  Not excessively though.  I don't blindly promote the Xbox to no end.  But I do promote its' good points when necessary.

Good things:
They have a pretty decent library of quality titles.

Proof?

1) Halo....Best....FPS....Ever.  Don't knock it until you play it in HDTV with Digital Surround pumping out all around you.  Amazing.
2) Apex...great racer, great grapics, great tracks.
3) World Racing...one of the best racers I've ever played.  Awesome graphics, very realistic handling, custom soundtracks.
4) Buffy the Vampire Slayer....great hack 'n slash title.
5) Steel Battalion....simply amazing.  You have to play to believe.  Fabulous replays that are saveable on the HD.
6) Deathrow...awesome "future sport" game.  Has a huge cult following.
7) MotoGP....great Xbox Live racer.  Nothing like competing with 15 other people, and being able to talk smack with all of them.
8) Mechassault...decent single player experience...great Xbox Live title.
9) DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball.....just kidding....personally, it sucks.
9) Morrowind...very deep RPG.  Not turn based (which is ok), but TONS of options, armor, weapons, races, cities, etc.
10) Kung Fu Chaos...with 4 players, this game is great fun and is hilarious.  The replays are priceless.
11) NHL2K3...nothing like playing some hockey on Xbox Live.
12) Panzer Dragoon Orta...BEAUTIFUL game.  Very challenging.  TONS of unlockables, including more missions and the original PD game.
13) Quantum Redshift...Great playing futuristic racer with a crappy storyboard.
14) Shenmue II....the sequel to one of my most favorite games.
15) Tao Feng...finally a fighter that makes you learn the combos to win.  Very strategic.  Button mashers need to stay away...

And upcoming titles like Brute Force, Halo 2, Doom III, Fable, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Sudeki, Return to Castle Wolfenstein:Tides of War, and others, it looks like the future for the Xbox is bright.

Great Hardware with a lot of untapped capability.

Great customer support.  There was a period of time where some Xboxes were failing prematurely.  To this day, MS is still repairing a lot of defective Xboxes (or replacing) at no charge, no questions asked.

Anyway, that is my PRO list for Xbox.

Cons:  They have a strange marketing plan, promise the world sometimes and do not deliver, put out some of the god-awfullest titles (Bruce Lee, anyone?) that should have never seen the light of day, and are like a neverending hype machine.  Even Xbox fanboys are beginning to take grains of salt before just believing everything.  Also, the Xbox is damn HUGE!!! I didn't really realize how big it was until I put my GC beside it.  Holy crap.  You could make 3 Gamecubes from the plastic from 1 Xbox.

I just got a Gamecube about a month or so ago.  I have some good titles for it.  A few, I'd put in the great column.  I never really payed much attention to the GC.

And to be honest, I really didn't because of the "kiddy" titles.  I wouldn't call them "kiddy" now, but that is the image some people get when they see Mario, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, children's games such as Pooh and Tigger (which my kids love), etc.  You see where I'm coming from.

Some people are blinded by ignorance.

Once I got my GC, I went out and got 4 titles:  Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Zelda: WW, and Super Monkey Ball.

The next day, I went out and bought: Pikmin, Resident Evil, and found a used copy of ZeldaOT/Master Quest (bought all 3 for $35.00)

A week ago, I bought Rogue Leader and the Tigger/Pooh game for my kids.

So what's the verdict?

Freaking Metroid Prime has me hooked.  Hooked on a game like I haven't been in a while.  I didn't like it at first.  But once I beat the Parasite Queen, it's all been sweeeet.

Zelda : WW is simply art in motion.  Almost a perfect 10 in my eyes.

And I like the other titles too, just between MP and All Star Baseball 2004 for the Xbox, I haven't had much time to get to them.

Gamecube will always be in my home from now on.  And when Nintendo's next console comes out, I'll buy it too.

Ignorance almost kept me from enjoying some great GREAT titles.  Not being an "excessive fanboy" with blinders would have made me miss out on the chance to play probably 2 of the best games of the last 5 years (MP and Zelda).

I feel that "Excessive fanboys" from both sides of the console war would really appreciate the other console if they had time to invest in the other console.  To call Xbox "crap" and not spend a few days playing Halo, Steel Battalion, Panzer Dragoon Orta, etc.  should be a crime for a "hardcore gamer".  Same goes for Metroid Prime, Zelda, etc.  These are some of the best games of this generation.

In the end, just give me good quality games.  I do not care by whom they are made.  Whoever makes the best games is who gets my money.

That is why I sold my PS2, but that is another story....

Sorry for the rant....

Well, I'm officially hooked on Metroid Prime.  I'm just about totally done with the Chozo ruins.  There's only 2 main rooms that I haven't accessed.  The really hot one, which you take damage just walking into (I'm guessing there's a special suit somewhere in another level), and a large circular room that says "is the source of the toxicity" or something like that...I'm guessing another boss fight.

I'm having trouble with the room that has the tree in the center with all of the different platforms.  You have to find the 4 runes and scan them.  I can only find 3.

This game is truly addictive.  I really didn't care for it at first, but MP has really got me hooked for a while.  It's pulled me away from Zelda WW and my Xbox.

What's the scoop with Animal Crossing???  It seems that everyone I talk to, states that women eat this game up.  What makes it so addictive for them?

Then again, maybe it's just me...

I don't think you're bashing the Xbox, but I believe you're missing the point of why a lot of people buy it.  The main reason I personally bought it was the fact that the Dreamcast was discontinued, and Shenmue II was pulled from being released in the US on the DC.  Once they announced it for the Xbox, I immediately put a pre-order on an Xbox.  Once I researched the titles that were to be released, it just made sense for me.  There were a lot of games that were hyped that deserved the hype, some games that were hyped that should have never been released on any console, and some games that were hyped that still have not seen the light of day.

Since months before pre-release, the Xbox was touted as THE console to have because of the "killer apps" that would be coming out.  Unfortunately, a lot of the "killer apps" were either excessively hyped, or delayed.  There are only about 8 "absolutely killer apps" for the Xbox that I can think of (Halo, Steel Battalion, NFL Fever 2003, Morrowind, etc), some of which are not even out that were slated for a 2001 release (Brute Force, others...).

The Xbox system is very powerful, and their second wind is coming this summer/fall with releases such as Fable, Brute Force, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, True Crime :Streets of LA, MotoGP II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein:Tides of War, etc.  Even their latest releases have made some leaps in graphic quality/gameplay.  Apex and World Racing are 2 awesome racing titles that have to be seen to be believed, especially while playing on an HDTV and listening to the 5.1 Dolby Digital/DTS.  However, it seems that the Xbox has trouble hyping the crap out of some titles that just turn into mediocre ordeals.

Here's the way I see it:  PS2 will continue to pump out tons of games, good or not.  Like was said above, they appeal to the mainstream gamer that just wants tons of available titles.  The Xbox will continue to mainly appeal to the older gamer.  Proof of this is the fact that there's really only one kids' title out of all the titles that have been developed, or are in development.  And it was Shrek, and it sucks.

The Gamecube concept, I guess, really has not changed too much.  However, like I've stated before, I'm far from a Nintendo spokesperson.  It seems that Nintendo is content to retain their present customer base by providing new titles within existing franchaises (Mario, Zelda, etc).  This way, Nintendo can retain their current customers, and chip away at the fan base of other consoles.  This is how I've come to own a Gamecube.  It also seems that Nintendo releases less "crap" on their system.  I'm not saying that they are the "king of apps", but that they release less bombs.  I think if you pick up any Gamecube title, especially 1st party titles, you can rest assured that you are at least going to get a decent game.

This is just my take on the whole situation.  I love my Xbox, and more than likely, it will continue to be my primary console.  However, my Gamecube is seeing more playtime, mainly because of Zelda:WW and Metroid Prime.

What will hurt the Gamecube is if Xbox online really takes off.  The next 6 months will tell the tale, because in early November most of the "free" XBL memberships will expire, and the renewals or lack thereof will probably make/break XBL.  Personally, I played the crap out of XBL for the first 2-3 months, but I have not been on in the last 3 months or so.  Unless more killer apps are released before renewal, I personally will not be renewing.

Anyway, I've ranted enough.  This may not even make sense....lol.

Ok...I own an Xbox and a Gamecube, and I'll try to not sound like a "fanboy" of either.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Metroid Prime would be chugger."  Are you stating that the performance wouldn't be as good?  Absolutely false.  The Xbox could handle it easily.  Have you seen some of the latest titles that have been released for the Xbox?  (Apex, World Racing, Tao Feng, Panzer Dragoon Orta, clips from Halo 2???  Apex and World Racing I know most of the time run at 60FPS.)

I'm not bashing or anything.  I have no reason to.

Now, back to the main question:

There is absolutely no reason for Nintendo to pull itself from the console race.  Why would they?  They have the name recognition, the exclusivity with quite a few titles, the reputation, etc.  They have almost all of the keys.  They're just not a "super marketing powerhouse" like Sony, or a company with an endless bank account like Microsoft.

Plus, having 3 major manufacturers of consoles is awesome for the customers.  Especially the customers that have more than one console.  It quells complacency.  The three are always trying to "one-up" the competition's best offerings, which is great for us.

Yeah, exclusives.  I am planning to probably buy multiplatform titles based on if the Xbox/GC version offers something the other doesn't.  A lot of Xbox titles support custom soundtracks where you can play ripped songs off your hard drive instead of the standard fare of game music.  Listening to Disturbed, System of a Down, Godsmack, 50 Cent, etc. while playing a driving game is much better than the standard "techno" fare.  That is a bonus that I really like.  If they're in essence the same, I'd probably buy the Xbox version.  Also, Xbox can support up to 1080i resolution.  Of course, the game has to as well.  I am presently running gold component cables to a 55" Phillips HDTV, and it also supports Dolby Digital DTS and 5.1.  I have a killer surround sound system, so the Xbox version will probably win out.

By the way, the answer to your 2nd question is this:  I play games practically every day.  It's not the only thing I do, but I get quite a bit of time to get some gametime in, especially after the kids go to bed.  Also, my wife is turning into quite the gamer.  We play alot of co-op games together, and have beaten Halo on Legendary, Conflict Desert Storm, Baulders Gate: Dark Alliance, Gauntlet, Ghost Recon, and several other co-op games together.  She is also quite good at FPS's when she's playing solo.  Also, she likes to race MotoGP on Xbox Live.  Therefore, I do not get too much flak for gaming.

She was not real "hip" on getting a 3rd console (my kids have their own Xbox upstairs), but now that I'm in the middle of Zelda, she doesn't mind it too much.  She actually seems to like to watch me play Zelda:WW, and is starting her own Eternal Darkness game.

Think of it as more of a "collection".  I'm at a point in my life where I have a decent amount of disposable income.  As a younger kid/teen, I had NO FUNDS to buy games, etc.  So, since I love games so much, I guess I'm sort of living out my childhood.  Plus, I'd rather play a great RPG/sports game than watch TV for entertainment.

Not sure.  Haven't really researched this game too much.  I have SC1 for the Dreamcast, and it's probably my favorite fighter of all time.  I'm not sure if you've played SC or not, but it is great.  Very fluid movements, unlockables, etc.  Great game.

BTW...do you know of the differences between the Xbox and GC versions?

Well, I played some SNES....my grandfather had one so when the grandkids came over, they had some games to play.

I played Starfox and some Mario game on that console, and I forgot about this one.  It was a baseball game, but it had different named kids playing like in a park or something.  That's all the experience I have with that console....that was in my Sega Genesis days, and I was very happy with it.

El Pollo Diablos.

p.S Opposite of your wife I don't like Ghostrecon

I have had probably 80% of all games released for the Xbox.  What would help would be to know what genre games are your favorites.

Ok...here's the definitive list of "must have" games (that are currently out).

Halo (no explanation needed.  Best...FPS...Ever.)

Xbox Live kit (comes with MotoGP demo/Whacked! demo)

Apex (fabulous racing game.  Grapics/story mode are wonderful as well)

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ($29 new.  One of the best "Hack & Slash" game I've ever played)

Dead or Alive 3/Tao Feng (DOA3 is just a great fighter, but can be beaten by a 'button masher'.  Tao Feng takes real skill/learning combos.  Button mashers will get obliterated in this game by an experienced player.  Can be frustrating at first. )

Deathrow (sort of extreme sports meets Lacrosse, except your using a disc, shooting toward a ringed goal.  Shoot goals, beat the crap out of the other team, or a combination of both.  Sleeper hit.  Discontinued, so finding a copy might be difficult. )

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (GREAT RPG.  Huge environments.  Play as several different character classes/races.  Over 200 different weapons.  Over 200 different interchangeable armor pieces.  Tons of spells.  Custom spells.  Good graphics.  Gets semi-repetitive and is very time consuming.  I'm still not done, and have over 80 hours into the game.  One primary quest, but TONS of side quests.  Has been claimed to have "bugs", but have never encountered a problem.)

Enclave (3rd person RPG/Action...$19 new, great graphics and gameplay.  Can be frustrating due to the lack of "save points".)

Mechassault (decent single-player campaign.  Buy it for Xbox live capability.  Lots of online fun)

MotoGP (great motorcycle racing...but sequel gets released within 60 days.  Tons of Xbox live fun).

Phantom Crash (great mech game...lots of mech customization...leans toward the Japanese Anime fan.  Best....intro...ever.  Think of it like Mechwarrior meets Unreal Championship.  In cockpit and 3rd person views.  Very underrated game.  Cult following.)

Shenmue II (Awesome action/RPG.  $19.99 new. Comes with a DVD movie of events from the first Shenmue series, to kind of "catch you up" for episode II)

Splinter Cell (apparently you know about this game...no explanation needed.)

Steel Battalion (if you can afford it/find one, get it.  $199.99 new.  Huge 40 button dual-stick controller.  Fully illuminated.  Pedals included.  Control a huge mech, and fight tons of battles with allies.  Several different customizable mechs to choose from.  Awesome replays which are savable to the Xbox hard drive.  Takes 2-3 hours just to get used to the controls.  Control everything from manevering, to chaffs, communication with supply convoys for refueling/ammo, even wash your windows.  )

Anyway, that's the definitive list.  If I had to choose my top 5:

Halo
Elder Scrolls III:Morrowind
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Phantom Crash
Deathrow

It's a hard choice.  Lots of good games for the Xbox.  Unfortunately, there's some definitive "bombs" as well.  Feel free to ask me about specific titles, and I'll be happy to give you a mini-review....

Nintendo Gaming / Xbox fan buys Gamecube....story at 11.
« on: April 09, 2003, 04:53:54 AM »
Let me just start by stating that I'm a new member here, but have been reviewing posts for a while...so I'll introduce myself...

I have been a gamer since the old Atari 2600 days.  Owned a Genesis, PS1, Dreamcast (great console), PS2 (sold it), and an Xbox.  I bought an Xbox at midnight on release day 11/15/01, and have been very happy with it.  I have about 60 titles for it, and it has been probably my favorite console to date.

However, I longed for another console, and really didn't give the Cube a chance.  I picked up a PS2, and was rather disappointed in it.  I sold it a few months later, and lost no sleep over it.

About 3 weeks ago, a friend of mine owed me some cash, so since he's a distributor of electronics, asked me if there was anything that I wanted that he might carry.  Well, I have a great 55" HDTV, Surround, DVD, so I said, "You got a Gamecube?"  I figured, what the heck, I'll give it a shot.

I would like to state that I'm very happy with the Cube.  My wife isn't crazy about it (she loves Halo and Ghost Recon for the Xbox). I picked up the following titles to start my Gamecube collection:

Zelda: Wind Waker
Amazing game.  It's like animated artwork in motion.  The story, facial expressions, controls, etc.  are flawless, IMO.

Metroid Prime
At first, I really didn't care for it, but about an hour into the game, I was hooked!  This game is soooo addictive.  The more I play, the more it "grows" on me.  However, I'm presently stuck on a level....maybe I'll post a "help me please" post to get me past it...hehe.

Eternal Darkness
I haven't played much of this title, but it seems to be a pretty decent game.  I picked it up on recommendation from a friend.

Star Wars : Rogue Leader
Great shooter that satisfies the "X-Wing" pilot that is in me.  I love Star Wars, so this game is naturally going to get some "props".

Pikmin
Surprisingly, this game is very addictive... I bought this game used, and didn't have the instruction manual until yesterday, so I've only muddled through the first 3 "days" of finding parts.

Super Monkey Ball
Addictive and fun, but man, this game will test your patience!

Zelda : Ocarina of Time/Master Quest
There's an "other console" forum at the Xbox site I frequent, and this title seems to be the "benchmark" that Zelda:WW was measured on.  I always hear how great this title is, so I picked it up used for $17 at Gamestop.  Not bad, eh?

Resident Evil
I like the Resident Evil series (fave being RE: CV for the Dreamcast).  I have only looked at the first 15 minutes or so of this game.  I'm afraid to go any further for fear of having Metroid, Zelda, and Resident Evil all "games in progress".  I have to pace myself...

Is this a decent starting collection?  There are a few other games that I've heard about (mainly Skies of Arcadia) that I'm semi-interested in.  Keep in mind that this is the first Nintendo product I have EVER owned, so I know pretty much nothing of what the Cube has to offer. The only Nintendo games I have EVER played up until 3 days ago was Starfox and some Mario game for the NES.  The Gamecube will probably not be my primary console, but it definitely is becoming an enjoyable experience.

I'm looking forward to posting here, and entertain any comments!!!
