Nintendo Gaming / Is this a glimpse of the future? Blu-Ray Disc ...
« on: March 10, 2003, 11:58:25 AM »
theaveng: What makes you think games will exceed 20 gigs? The ONLY way they could do that is through FMV, and I see a huge drop in FMV use next gen, when console-generated graphics are almost as good (they're nearing that point even this gen), and I imagine that FMV is actually pretty expensive, and, so I've heard, slower to make than console-generated cut-scenes. There might be one, two at the most, that will exceed or maybe approach 20 gigs, but I actually see game size going way down- way WAY down, especially 2 generations ahead. It's expensive filling 20 gigabytes of disc space.

Nintendo Gaming / Yay... my picture is on the front page!

Yep, it's Figure 9- that's the pic. The one on PGC's front page is just cropped over the Luig tattoo with a part of yoru lip and nose. But that IS you on the front page. Good job, man, getting your mug on PGC. Please tell me, though, that that tattoo was temporary- I couldn't imagine living my life with Luigi emblazoned on my cheek.

Nintendo Gaming / Is the Dennis Dyack that posts here the real deal?
« on: March 10, 2003, 02:16:58 AM »
Denis came to the IGN boards all the time when I was there- haven't really amde an effort to post there reguraly in over a year though.

But I think you'll know Denis when you see him. For one, he'll most likely be the only one with the suer name DenisDyack. He'll also be the only one talking bout Silicon Knights games like he made them, because he did.

Nintendo Gaming / Wario World likely to suck?
« on: March 09, 2003, 03:10:22 PM »
What do you expect? For every game to look as good or better than Metroid Prime or Splinter Cell? Face it- Wario World's graphics are very detailed- they've got a great style for the game and a WHOLE bunch of polys going into the mix. The only thing I can complain about is the apparent lack of high detail textures. Otherwise, I think it looks great. You people nedd to stop expecting FMV quality graphics- it simply WON'T happen.

I swar to god, some people are NEVER satisfied with graphics. They're never quite good enough for everybody. Remember how people said ED's graphics suck? I just replayed Paul Kuther's stage and I have to say I was *stunned* at how beatiful it looked. Play the game before you pass judgements on graphics, people.

Nintendo Gaming / Too Human talk
« on: March 09, 2003, 02:41:37 PM »
Hybrid: If Too Human is too big to fit on the disc, SK WILL put more the gmae on multiple discs- Dennis has said that he's not afraid to do it, and Too Human may very well span 2 discs. I doubt they'll need more than 2, but don't worry about SK taking thing out of the game to make it fit on one disc.

The only relevance in that it's 8.5 gigs of FMV is that in the future FMV won't be necessary, making 8.5 gig games very, very rare. I realize that it'll be a loooooong time before FMV will be completely unneccessary- that's why I said "a couple generations", which I think will be no sooner than 2010. I'll be very surprised if we get two or three more consoles down the line by 2010.

"actually i think the game is probably done--- if you remember it was supposed to debut in 2000 on the playstation but at that e3 i think nintendo announced they had bought out silicon knights"

Not quite- remember when Eternal Darkness was an N64 game? Silicon Knights didn't simply port it to the Gamecube- according to Denis, they scrapped *everything* except the story and dialogue. You're right that they have the engine done (obviously, if Eternal Darkness is running on a sub-set of it), but I woudln't doubt that Silicon Knights made a similar move with Too Human, scrapping almsot everything to optimise it for the Gamecube. Even so, they've had Gamecube development kits for like 3 years or something, now- if they don't get the game out this year, it's because they're focusing on something else.

Nintendo Gaming / Pokemon 3d online rpg?
« on: March 08, 2003, 07:12:16 PM »
If it was a stadium game, that woul explain the need or heavy reccomendation to hook the game up to either Ruby or Sapphire. Seriously, though, Nintendo can do better than a 3RD stadium game- I agree completely that we need a full 3D, preferrably online, Pokemon RPG.

"Samus to switch to a dedicated scanning view in order to download data, could've been used to much greater effect, had the developers wanted to include an actual backstory to the game"

I agree with oohboy- that comment right there PROVES this man has no clue what he's talking about. There are literally HUNDREDS of things to scan, and the Pirate Logs and the Chozo Lore provided a VERY detailed and engrossing backstory to the game- definetly the best since Eternal Darkness. It makes you wonder how much of the game this guy actually played.

Nintendo Gaming / Xenosage, any chance for the Cube?
« on: March 08, 2003, 03:06:24 PM »
Monolith's Gamecube RPG is Baiten Katos, not Xenosaga. I don't know if Monolith or Namco WANT to put Xenosaga on the cube, but I doubt, even with the DivX tools, they could compress all the FMV to fit on the Gamecube disc. You'd need like 3.

Ace: Nope, not even a projected time period for release. We're all *expecting* it to be released some time this year, but we really don't know- Silicon Knights could be focusing on something different.

"Genious Society"

Don't you mean Genious *Sonority*? They're the guys handling Pokemon, now, I believe.

And while we may know barely anythig of a Pokemon game for the Cube, it IS in development, we at elast know that. I don't think Nintendo will dissapoint.

Nintendo Gaming / Wrong about Metroid?
« on: March 08, 2003, 01:51:13 PM »
"Please be advised that there are people out there that genuinely don't like Metroid Prime"

I can understand how one might not *enjoy* the game, but to say it was "poorly made" is just stupid. It's like a book- the story and characters may not interest you, may not capture your imagination. but there's some books that are just written well, head and shoulders above the rest. I realize this is a subjective argument, but there's times when it's *obvious* that one is better than the other, and Metroid Prime is one of those games.

The reviewer is talking out of his ass- its sad that some people actually BELIEVE what they write in cases like this. He's just another fanboy except in a higher position. He makes the mistake of comparing it to Splinter Cell, which isn't even in the same GENRE as Metroid Prime. I think anyone will agree that this guy just had a VERY poorly written review. Now if he had provided legitimate reasons for disliking the game, I could respect his opinion. But when he says the lava is too RED or the snow is too WHITE, it becomes blatant that he was dropped on his head as a child. He went into the game with the preconcieved notion that it would be horrible so he came OUT of the game with the same conclusion (I have no idea how much of it he actually played). His only problem was he didn't have any legitimate excuses for saying it was bad and went with the next best thing- he bashed ANYTHING that he saw that had the slightest bit of a flaw in. I understand that this review is his opinion, but it's MY opinion that he's a jackass.

There's actually several characters you can use. I personally reccomend Yoshi, who I used. Basically, go over by Crazy Hand, do a short little jump, and use Yoshi's down+A attack, his butterfly kick (similar to the strategy a lot of people use in the Homerun Derby). Make it a goal to get rid of Crazy Hand first, because he ahs the more damaging attacks. Learn how to avoid both of their attacks, as well, including combined attacks.

You can also use Captain Falcon, or, I guess, Ganondorf. Do their smahs up+A attack (the double kick) to hurt either hand. A friend of mine also use Link/Young Link's air down+A attack (you can hit them around 3 times each go around). But really, the main thing is to learn how to avoid all of their attacks- since you only get one life, you erally can't screw up.

General Chat / old school PGC... were you part of it?

I've been coming here since PlanetN2000. I visited the site multiple times every day, just like a do now. I remember when they redesigned the site and made it PlanetGamecube. I think it was on their first anniversary that Billy said they were closing PlanetN2000. I was so sad. Then, of course, it became PGC. You sly one, Billy.

The game's actually been in development before the original Legacy of Kain- Silicon Knights has been working on it for a *long* time- in fact, according ot Dennis, the Soul Reaver was a weapon in Too Human but was moved over to Legacy of Kain early in it's development. Reprotedly, the game is so detailed (it takes place in 2490, I believe) that you can actually go to a library in the game and find out what's happened in the world between the present and when the game takes place. Plus, with the different cybornetic upgrades, you can play through the game any way you want. You can be stealthy and play it Solid Snake style, or you can bust in guns blazing Rambo style. It also has a pretty big anime influence, too, according to Dennis. I seriosuly can't wait for this game.

If you talk to them wearing the mask of truth, they reveal little secrets about things. Kinda useless, but cool to find out nonetheless. Just something to occupy your time. If you strike them with a sword, they'll tell you the time. If you hit them with your hammer, you can flatten them. And if you place a bomb next to one, it'll take off like a rocket.

Nintendo Gaming / Is this a glimpse of the future? Blu-Ray Disc ...

"By year 2, PS2 games would hit 4800 megabytes (like FF10). This is year 3 of the PS2, and already the 8500 megabyte DVD has been maxed out by Xenosaga."

Keep in mind that the larger games of the current time are generally laden with FMV. Xenosaga is not actually filled with 8.5 gigabytes of pure gameplay- FMV, I'm sure, takes up a huge portion of that size. BUT, since the quality of console graphics has risen exponentially, there's been less and less need for FMV. In a couple generations, no one will use FMV- it'll be more expensive, take long, and produce results that are little better than in game graphics, if at all. That'll free up a TON of space for actual gameplay, and when the day coems thyat a disc is filled with more than 8 gigabytes of pure gameplay is the day we spend literally years playing the game.

Anyway, I don't know if anyone's mentioned this, but has anyone heard of Panasonic's new venture? They're said to be designing a disc that will hold roughly 10 TERAbytes of information (that's about 10,000 gigabytes, or about 10,000,000,000,000 bytes). They're not even planning on maknig availalbe to consumer for like 10 years, but I thought it was interesting. Supposedly it uses soem type of holographic layering device.

Nintendo Gaming / LOL at Golden Sun 2 Impressions
« on: March 07, 2003, 03:36:14 PM »
RPG's should really get you into the rhythm of the game in no more than 20-25 minutes. Golden Sun took a while to get into, but once you did, it swept you through. I realize bigger games need bigger set-ups (even though Golden Sun is a GBA game, it still is at least as lnog as any other RPG, and GS2 is longer), but more than an hour is insane.

Well, it's not my Gamecube, because I'm replaying Eternal Darkness and will be playing Wind Waker in a little more than 3 weeks. It's not my PS2, because I just got DDRMax and some dance pads, so I'll be occupied with that for a while, and it's not my Dreamcast, because I've rediscovered Jet Grind Radio and Toy Commander and Shenmue. I'd really have to say it's my PC. Even though it's not technically a console, the most gaming action it's been getting for a lnog time is a healthy mix of Free Cell, Snood, and MS Hearts. Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to play some of those great PC games they keep pumping out, but my computer can't even run the original Unreal Tournament if someone's moving or shooting. That coupled with the fact that I lost my Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 disc (), is probably why I've barely played my PC at all. I really wish I had a better computer.

manunited: No, what I read about was actually paper whose ink could change. It didn't imitate paper, it was paper. I do agree that any technology along those lines (including that nifty hologram at last year's E3) are still a ways off to the consumer.

Nintendo Gaming / Earthbound 2 Coming?
« on: March 07, 2003, 10:54:30 AM »
Check out this- Starmen.net (easily the best Earthbound fansite on the net) has compiled all the Mother 3 rumors from the last 3 months. I'm about 90% sure at this point that Mother 3 is, in fact, in development, either for the GBA or Gamecube. There's even one leg of the rumor mill that say Nintendo will rerelease the first 2 Mother games for the GBA (which is great for non-Japanese, since Mother 1 was never officially released anywhere else).
