Nintendo Gaming / RE: Why no Dancing for cube fans?
« on: June 22, 2003, 09:34:40 AM »
i don't feel like checking sources, but i do know that there will be at least some for of online ranking, and some tournament options. There maybe online versus play.

Since you can make your own patterns, it would be nice if you could play songs from the hard drive.

Wow, those are some pretty neat playlists. i've still got stuff i ripped or downloaded ages ago that has wrong ID3 tags. Some's still in MP2. i've been meaning to clean up my files and rerip my CDs, but i don't have 200+ GB of space.

The point of the home versions is essentially just a free play version of the arcade mode to practice your skills on for the arcade version. DDR is truly not my kinda game (i prefer Samba de Amigo when it comes to music/dance games), but i agree that it would be a better fit for the Cube than the Xbox. It seems like Konami is testing the online waters with the Xbox, which may have been why they chose the Xbox. Online battles could be big, although i have to wonder why Konami didn't just do it on PS2.

Fish, where do you live that sushi is hard to come by? After i moved to this small city in North Carolina, i thought i would have to drive to Raleigh (~40 minutes) to get my sushi, but there's a restaurant less than ten minutes from my house. And surprisingly, they're great. i only wish that their staff were more knowledgeable on what they serve. They get local girls and i have to robotically speak the name of what i want using ENGLISH phonetics. It's just plain evil.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Forgetting the "older" generation of Gamers?
« on: June 21, 2003, 01:22:44 PM »
Ikaruga's a bad example though. Shmups (shoot 'em ups) in general require fast reflexes, pattern memorization, and the stamina to fight relentless waves of enemies. This makes them hard for most people. Ikaruga's no different. Frankly, the main thing keep Ikaruga from attaining pure "old school" status is the gameplay.

They're so warm and crusty. But not in a whore related way!

Thanks for that! i was envisioning eating the crust of a warm cherry pie and then said crust became, uh... not tasting like cherry pie.

i like sushi and sashimi, especially maguro (tuna) and sake (salmon). i think it's just amazing how you can taste each of the fillings in a sushi roll, and how they compliment the fish. The relaxed yet energetic feeling i get after eating sushi is the best. If i wasn't so poor i'd have some for lunch tomorrow.

Funny, i was looking for an article proving the date, and i found info only to the contrary:

http://news.com.com/2100-1043_3-1019181.html?tag=fd_top

The article states other intersting bits, like how PSX is intended to renew the Playstation brand, given that the Cell processor is behind schedule. But wasn't Cell supposedly not planned to be in PS3? Ugh, my head is spinning.

Looking for more sources; at the moment my cable connection is running slower than 56k.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: New Game from Smilebit

Bashing horse racing sims when you've never played one is akin to calling the Gamecube kiddy without playing the games.

i've been meaning to play one myself. It's one of the few genres i've never tried myself. They're still wildly popular in Japan, and have a lot of fans outside of Japan.

They did a horse racing sim on PS2 a couple years back, as well as a few games in the "Let's Make" series, and some J. League soccer games. It'll boost Japanese GC sales at least.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Your opinion about Splinter Cell?(GC)
« on: June 18, 2003, 07:48:41 PM »
Funny; i didn't even know there was a PGC review until i read this thread. Don't know how that slipped by. And it was written by Tim Rogers. There's a first.

The linear nature turned me off quite a bit. At least in MGS you have your options on how to deal with enemies, each with it's own consequences. i do think the developer did a good job of porting it in the time they had. Granted, it's a slightly upgraded version of the PS2 game, but given the simultaneous release it holds up against the PS2 version, which runs at 30fps for starters. They simplified the level architecture to fit in the PS2's memory, which i don't mind, but as my cousin watched me play he commented how they simplified a lot of the areas, sometimes for the better, sometimes not. Can't say we got the shaft seeing as how there's Pro Logic support and GBA connectivity bonuses. Granted, there could've been more, and the graphics could've been closer to Xbox, but then the GC version woud've been pushed back months after the Xbox release, and we'd be complaining about how it's not selling because everyone got the Xbox/PC/PS2 version already.

i'm glad i didn't run out and buy it full price, but i'll definitely pick it up when i can get it for $30-$40.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Younger gamers and the gaming industry
« on: June 18, 2003, 06:10:15 PM »
We've all played some games when we were kids that we thought were great, only to play them a decade later and realize how crappy they were. The difference is that now, after years of playing games, we've developed a sense of what makes a good game, and can apply that to any game we play. In a sense i see it as maturation; in the same way that a kid will cry when his mom tells him he can't play now, games that offer instant gratification (GTA for example), will appeal to more immature audience. (Not to say that's the only appeal GTA has.) However, as we get older we gain patience and even appreciation for anticipation, which opens up appeal for games like Eternal Darkness.

The maturation process also applies to indepent thought, as someone pointed at earlier. As we get older, ideally we're more aware of advertising and less susceptible of it, due in part because we can confidently form our own opinions. Heck, i preordered Mortal Kombat on Genesis to get it on Mortal Monday after having played it a few times at the arcade. i returned it a few days later, after beating it repeatedly without much effort, and discovering several bugs. i fell for the hype then, but never again.

Termin8Anakin, it's hard to say which game looks better because they're two completely genres and don't even share the same style camera. The environments in Metroid look much more convincing, although the character models in ETM look pretty good. i'd give the nod to Metroid overall though; ETM as a whole wasn't as graphically satisfying.

I think I read some where that the PS2 only supports surround during cut scenes, and then back to stereo for the in game action.

You're right. i completely forgot about that.

I hate the controller. It's unconfortable and D-pad centric which is backwards for a 3D console. It also encourages developers to stick with digital controls which is outdated on often impractical. It also only has two controller ports which is just dumb and encourages developers to not make four player games.

i couldn't agree more. While the PS2's D-pad feels a bit better than the PS's, i don't like the feeling of four separate buttons, nor do i like two trigger buttons per side. The analog sticks are truthfully an afterthought and don't feel as comfortable as similarly-placed analog sticks on the Cube or Xbox controllers. i don't understand why they just didn't take the initiative to switch the D-pad and left analog switch when they came out with the analog controller back in the PS days.

I have 16 games for my X-box, and I enjoy all of them. I "personally" think the x-box has a larger selection of better games than the gamecube. In better, I mean games I prefer, so it all comes down to ones preferance.

i believe there's also a larger number of western games on the Xbox compared to the other two as well. As i've said in another thread, i generally play more Japanese games. Gamers who share the same preference generally feel the Xbox has less quality or at least worthwhile games, not to suggest that that was the reasoning behind Ian Sane's comments.

NWR Feedback / PLEASE Stop the Flash Adds- PGC Admins...
« on: June 18, 2003, 06:16:36 AM »
Is complaining about ads a bannable offense yet? This is tired.

Get Mozilla, or Firebird. i've used Mozilla for some time now and since they've included popup blocking, i've seen no unwanted popups. None. Zero. Both Mozilla and Fireball are free, and available for download on many platforms at http://www.mozilla.org.

i've do get the interstitial "Click to continue to PGC" ad, but it's once a day and not a problem for me. The rest of the ads are on the page and don't bother me.

i also recommend download BOTH Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/)) and Spybot S&D (http://security.kolla.de/).). Spybot usually catches more spyware components than Ad-Aware, but i use both just to be sure.

In terms of graphics  hardware, the Xbox has various shaders which aid in various visual effects like making textures look better, improved lighting, etc. Gamecube and PS2 can be programmed to do in in-game, but it taxes the CPU.

PS2 and Xbox have digital output for sound, as opposed to the analog output on the cube. Pro Logic II on the Cube works great, but for many it required new receivers to take advantage of it, as opposed to DTS and Dolby Digital on the PS2 an Xbox which is standard on all receivers.

Cube and Xbox support progressive scan output, a do the new model PS2.

There's various other areas where each console excels, but they are all capable of playing great (and not-so-great) games.

General Chat / RE: Software Piracy vs. Practicality
« on: June 18, 2003, 03:48:26 AM »
The funny thing about people who use pirated software is that they're contributing to the popularity of the program. For instance, say you download MS Office, then create an write a document that you later email to someone. In order to view that document, they'll need Word, or at the very least something that views that version of Word docs. This creates a dependency on Microsoft's products for something which is likely nothing but text. And just by using the program and repeating program/manufacturer-specific phrases li0ke "wizard"or "office assistant", you're continuing to promote the software.

i too was collecting MS OSs, though unknowingly. i had 3.0/3.1/Windows for Workgroups legally, but ended up ditching them a few months ago because i was moving. i've still got 95/98/XP Pro OEM legally now. Oddly enough, i *just* ran across a (not legal) copy of Windows 1.0, in a HA (old compression util) archive. When i get a computer that can run it, i'll try it out again.

The forum displays Shift-JIS-encoded Japanese, and should display any other language regardless of encoding.

The post definitely isn't Japanese, at least not coherent Japanese. Given the patterns in characters i'd say that it's just a word or short phrase copied and pasted repeatedly. But i stopped caring after i realized it wasn't Japanese.

If anything, it's a slam against Xbox.

[the] portable game machine that can be placed into a "download mode" when no game cartridge is inserted into the portable game machine.

If you read the quoted portions and ignore Spong's speculation, this sounds exactly like what happens between the GC and GBA. It also sounds like a patent filing from a couple years back. Even if it was something for the next Gameboy, it's hardly news-worthy.

horrible. good renter though. it got really boring after playing through the first few stages, and when you got to the sewers it was bad too. the FMVs are crappy since its ported from ps2

The FMVs look good to me, but regardless, FMVs aren't "ported" from one system to another, when they can just as easily use the original file.

And there's way more Xbox games that support Dolby Digital 5.1 versus any form of Pro Logic support on the Cube. On the list, EA is the biggest supporter of Pro Logic II, progressive scan, and 16:9 mode. Sega's also a pretty big supporter. At the moment, most bigger releases get the Pro Logic II/progressive scan support, which i don't mind.

More developers will adopt the technologies over time, just be patient.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: GameBoy Advance Player Pre-Sales Sold Out!
« on: June 16, 2003, 12:33:53 AM »
If it was a retailer like Electronics Boutique or Gamestop, i'd just be there when they sell the GBP. Somebody's bound to have a few extra, and i doubt there'll be people who didn't preordered filling the stores trying to get them. It's not a console launch.

Places like Target (retailers that don't focus on games) should definitely have some. If that doesn't work, drive out to a rural area to like a Wal-Mart and pick one up. But i doubt you'll have much trouble getting one in the city.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Is the GBA that much different then SP?
« on: June 16, 2003, 12:16:09 AM »
Definitely try both if you can. Don't let price determine pesonal comfort. i love my SP but i don't love it for fighters, not that the Gameboy pads have ever been perfect for fighters. The shallowness of the SP's d-pad makes rolling motions tougher, and the triggers get tiring quicker than on the standard GBA, or at least that's been my experience.

The SP's overall better in all other respects, save the stupid lack of a headphone jack. i could easily say the backlight, rechargeable battery, and clamshell design make the SP a much better buy, but not everyone has a problem with lighting, you can buy recharargeable batteries, and again some people like the design of the GBA over the SP, some not. It's all up to you.

General Chat / RE: Sega Genesis VS Super Nintendo
« on: June 15, 2003, 11:53:10 PM »
There were a few Genesis games that emulated Mode 7, but the SNES still owned the Genesis in that department, as well as with a greater color palette which made its games look richer. It's pretty much hands down for the SNES in that area, although i liked the look of Genesis games over those on SNES.

There was an AV adaptor (and RGB adaptor) for the Genesis, but for whatever reason it wasn't that popular and eventually became hard to find.
