TalkBack / Re: Full List of GameCube Remakes Announced

Of the seven games these DON'T have progressive scan:

Chibi-Robo
DK Jungle Beat
Given how late those came out in the system's lifetime, that's rather disturbing. This site seems to think that both are 480p; could it just be that they aren't listed on the box, or have you actually tried them?

I DO believe they'll all feature wiimote + nunchuk controls. After all, why remake them if not?
Because they're looking for a quick buck? ;)

However, I think we should basically throw any hopes of online out the window.
Are there any multiplayer games they've announced besides Metroid Prime 2? (I haven't played DKJB, Pikmin 2, or Chibi-Robo, admittedly.) Or perhaps more to the point, are there any good multiplayer games that they've announced? :P

Nintendo Gaming / Re: "Wii HD" in 2011?
« on: October 03, 2008, 10:05:07 PM »
When my 2001 panasonic tv-vcr combo finally breaks down i sure as heck am not getting HD, and definitely not DTV. Count me out.
You can no longer get a non-DTV TV; new models have been required to have DTV tuners for about two years now.

You might be able to get away with buying a computer monitor that has HDMI/DVI in, and a converter box for component/composite (though maybe they have monitors with those inputs too?). But you're not going to be able to get a very big one.

I wouldn't count on new features you guys. These are budget-priced, remember? They don't have to justify repurchases from people who've already played them, they're going after the people who didn't own GCs using the price as the reason, and not angling for repurchases from us.
Not many new features, no, but at a minimum I'd expect to see Wiimote/nunchuk controls (as opposed to the Classic Controller or GC controller), and 16:9 support. (Also progressive scan, but I think that pretty much every first-party title except Luigi's Mansion supports it.)

AS FOR PRICE, the Japan Price sounds just a tiny tad on the high side. Wii Sports sells there for what... 5800? Zelda: TP sold for 6800? I guess that 3800 really is sensibly priced from several angles, but in my mind that translates to $35 or $40 US and that is just ludicrous (except for Pikmin!).
Personally, I'm expecting these to retail for $30 here.

TalkBack / Re: Wii Storage Solution Put Forth
« on: October 03, 2008, 07:41:32 PM »
But this is a FUTURE solution down the road?  What are you kidding me?  Why the hell would it take this long?
Because they probably have to rearchitect their API so that the Shop channel actually has access to the encryption mechanisms for the channels it'll be putting on the SD cards.

Ideally, at the same time they're also revamping the DRM, so that it's permission-based instead of encryption-based. (That is, so that the console is asking "can I run this?" when you start a channel like an Xbox does, instead of just asking "can I decrypt this?" when copying it to the system and never checking again.) But that's not likely.

WTF, did some people here seriously suggest motion control for the device that the screen is attached to?
It's good enough for the iPhone... :P

Nintendo's VC emulator can't even handle the N64 memory pak or expansion pak right now.  I think 64DD support is quite a stretch.
But we'll probably get it before rumble pak emulation.

Why is there no built-in accelerometer?
Because games couldn't use it without being incompatible with older DSes. Unless they released an accelerometer Option Pak, I suppose.

Shame about the lose of the GBA slot (What about Guitar Hero on tour D:), but I'm eager to see what DSWare will bring.
Not just Guitar Hero, but also the loss of the Rumble Pak.

Hopefully we'll still be able to use DS Ware by transferring it via Wifi from a Wii, because from where I sit this is a downgrade from my DS Phat. (Here I was, hoping that they'd come to their senses and let us use all GB carts now that they killed the GBA...)

Also I'd rather not have midi music in a game...
Whereas I'd prefer having some sort of synthesized music, rather than looping orchestral samples. While the sound quality may not be as high (though frankly, with modern synthesizing, that's debatable), it allows for a dynamism in the music that you can't get with prerendered tracks.

The music was one of the greatest things about the original X-wing and TIE Fighter; they were able to replicate the experience of the movies' score, and its relevance to the on-screen action, in a way that hasn't been done in any of the Star Wars games since. (It was done in The Wind Waker to a degree, though; I loved how the combat music was in tune with when you swung your sword.)

Everyone please read the Coutrship of Princess Leia, by Barbara Hambly.
You mean Dave Wolverton. Barbara Hambly brought us such "gems" as Children of the Jedi and Planet of Twilight.

TalkBack / Re: Mega Man 9 Confirmed for WiiWare
« on: June 27, 2008, 12:00:34 AM »
Hey, question for you Mega-philes. When I pop Mega Man Anniversary Collection (or X Collection) into my Wii, it gets to the main game's internal menus just fine, but when I start one of the actual games, the screen goes black. I can hear the sound--I know the game is playing, but I can't see anything. Could this be caused by my component cables?
Not so much the component cables if you can see the menu, but your LCD TV not understanding 240-line resolution.

The visual style of the CG film? Is that going to be akin to the visual style of the Cartoon Network miniseries?
Unfortunately.

I don't understand the existence or appeal of game-specific stores in this day and age.  Virtually all new releases are carried by general retailers like Walmart, Target, etc. as well as general electronics stores like Best Buy and Circuit City.  What is the advantage of buying a game in a game-specific store?
Game-specific stores are generally the only place to find the collectors editions of games, so if you're interested in those (I usually pick up the CEs for anything Blizzard puts out, and for Guild Wars), you pretty much have to go and preorder them at a game-specific store.

Otherwise, though, I'm more than happy to shop elsewhere.

41
That's no good for them.  They want me to buy those games over again.
They may think that'd be nice, but my guess is that the majority of their rerelease/VC sales come from people like me who never had an SNES (and had a very limited set of NES games), and thus missed out on most of this the first time.

Is Mara Jade the person you play as in Mysteries of the Sith?
Yes, though that's probably her least-famous role.

Where's Jerec?
Sith Hell. ;)

I think the main source of backlash was that Capcom's Japan branch sold the RE0 port at full price with no new features.  That's the complete opposite of how RE4: Wii Edition was handled.
Well, those "new" features were already present in the PS2 and PC versions.

Since I never picked up RE0 (or 2 or 3 or CV, for that matter) for GameCube, I would not have minded seeing a Wii port. As long as it had 16:9 support, I'd definitely be willing to pay at least $30 for it, maybe more.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Do you still love your Gamecube?

1) The Wii takes a little longer to get into GC games mode, whereas with thr GC you only need to turn it on. But on the Wii you actually need the Wii remote and use it to click on the disc channel first. This can be annoying, but it isn't a big issue really.
Especially if you only have room in your entertainment system for one, and want a Wii anyways for newer games. :)

Another plus is that the GB player and other GC accessories won't work on the Wii, so if you want those features you should hold onto your GC.
True. But how many people still use the broadband adapter or modem on a regular basis? That just leaves the GB player, which, while a great supplement for my original GBA, has been more or less supplanted by my DS for most uses. I don't need rumble in Mario and Luigi that badly!

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Why does Nintendo hate the Game Cube?
« on: June 07, 2008, 02:01:18 PM »
With the Xbox, you are essentially just coding for a PC with specific hardware. A lot of coders already have vast knowledge in working with that kind of platform, so while it may or may not be easier, it is probably more accessible.
Exactly. :)

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Why does Nintendo hate the Game Cube?
« on: June 06, 2008, 09:35:25 PM »
Beyond that, it was their inability to reach out to third parties.  Face it - the difference between the XBox sales and the GameCube sales was pretty minimal... yet third parties dropped support for the Cube pretty quickly, but stuck with the XBox...
If I was going to develop a game for only one platform of the two (or possibly even of all three, PS2's install base asides), it would be the Xbox (or Xbox 360--especially since the PS3 doesn't have the install base advantage). The install bases may not be all that different between the Xbox/360 and GameCube/Wii, but the Xboxes have more power and features and are significantly easier to develop for than their Nintendo brethren.

Yeah, the general population really, really wants online.
I don't see anybody arguing that the general population wants online, just the general "gamer" population. Who are decidedly not who the Wii is courting, so it's not really worth Nintendo's while to put much effort into online for their sakes. If the DS hadn't already built the infrastructure, I'd wonder how much of the Wii's online capabilities would still be there...

TalkBack / Re: How Digital Delivery Can Save the Pack Rat
« on: June 05, 2008, 10:27:23 PM »
Digital distribution, as it is today, is all about taking power away from the users and giving it to the companies. That is bad regardless of the field.
Most cases, I agree. There are exceptions, though: Valve's Steam , Amazon's MP3 offerings and iTunes' ever-growing "iTunes Plus" catalog... Hopefully the Nintendos of the world will soon get on the bandwagon and stop thinking all their users are cheats and pirates.

Oh yeah. This is the company that encrypts the saved game backups users can make for no reason, and keeps them from backing up online game data period instead of, oh, keeping the cheat-worthy stuff safe online instead. My mistake.

I wish Civilization Revolution would come to the Wii now as well. The Wii remote would work much better than any gamepad for that kind of strategy game. Their excuse? "Civilization Revolution was put on indefinite hold due to lack of manpower and no PlayStation 2 or PlayStation Portable editions of the game to share assets with." Lame. As if it should have to share assets with those crap piles...
It pretty much has to, since it's not powerful enough to handle assets from the 360/PS3 versions.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: WiiFit/Balance Board Accessories
« on: June 04, 2008, 08:30:35 PM »
It wasn't the Wii Fit manual, it was the Balance Board manual, so unless they can change it with a firmware update it seems to be true for everything.
Even that might not be enough, since the Board lacks the player indicators of the Wiimote. How, other than trial and error, do you know which board is which?

Plus preexisting games will still lack support, of course.
