 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=22867

Nigel Robbins has been announced as the new CEO of Kuju Entertainment. Robbins moves to Kuju from MTV Networks, where he was a content and creative specialist.

Co-founders Ian Baverstock (current CEO) and Jonathan Newth will leave their operational roles and move into non-executive positions. The move is a result of the acquisition in 2007 by Catalis, the current parent company. Kuju's current development studios are Zoe Mode, Headstrong, Doublesix and Vatra. They are also working on the upcoming Lord of the Rings title, Aragorn's Quest.

"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to build on Kuju's strong foundations and focus on doing what we do best," Robbins said. "Our job is to create compelling quality content across all platforms and delivery channels, and that will continue to be the focus within each of our studios, ensuring that we are the first choice developer for our publishing partners."

TalkBack / Wii is the Leader in Console Revenue
« on: April 07, 2010, 07:20:42 AM »
Wii has the largest share of the console market, with nearly half of global platform revenue.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=22866

Ibis Capital, a media-focused investment business, has released a report reviewing the global video games market. Included in the information is that Wii is the dominant platform of the seventh generation consoles, with 47 percent of global platform revenue. Xbox 360 and PS3 follow this at 35 and 18 percent each. Additionally, Wii is the only profit-bearing console due to the lower cost. Sony and Microsoft profits come only from software, as consoles are sold at a loss.

The report also highlights issues such as rising development costs creating increased risk per game, and the hit-driven market giving no guarantee that an investment will be a success. The eighth generation of consoles is expected to bring growth to the console industry, but this could be limited by the growing casual market share, and devices such as the Apple iPad. Digital distribution is also expected to affect the console market, as sales of packaged goods are decreasing and downloadable games and add-on content continue to grow.

« on: April 02, 2009, 07:55:44 PM »
Launching with the DSi this weekend, the DSi Shop will open with five DSiWare games available for download.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=18098

Accompanying the release of the DSi on April 5th, five DSiWare games will be available for purchase from the DSi Shop on the day of launch.

The games announced for North America are WarioWare: Snapped!, Bird & Beans, Brain Age Express: Math, Master of Illusion Express: Funny Face, and Art Style: AQUIA. The same titles will be ready for the European launch two days in advance, with the names of certain games differing slightly.

Wireless broadband access is required to purchase the games, as they are downloaded directly onto the DSi console. In addition to the games, the Nintendo DSi Browser will be downloadable for free. The browser is a version of the Opera browser previously released for the DS with an expansion pack, which is no longer required.

New DSi purchasers will automatically be credited with 1,000 Nintendo Points when they connect to the store for the first time and register. This offer is available until October 5th, 2009. DSiWare titles will be available at four different price points: free, 200 points, 500 points, and 800+ points.

The DSi launches in the US on April 5th in blue or black with an MSRP of $169.99. European gamers can look forward to black or white versions on April 3rd.

NEW NINTENDO DSI USHERS IN ERA OF PERSONALIZATION AND SHARING  Two Cameras, Interactive Audio and Nintendo DSiWare Provide Creative, Customized Experiences

REDMOND, Wash., April 2, 2009 – On April 5, Nintendo launches Nintendo DSi™, the third iteration of the best-selling portable video game system and the latest evolution in hand-held gaming. Nintendo DSi gives new and veteran gamers the ability to customize, personalize and share their experiences with friends and family. Two built-in, interactive cameras let people snap and modify photos, while recorded sounds can be played and manipulated in interesting and imaginative ways. Also on April 5, Nintendo will launch the Nintendo DSi Shop, a new online storefront where users can redeem Nintendo DSi Points to download an ever-growing variety of inventive games and applications. Nintendo DSi will be available in the United States in Blue or Black at an MSRP of $169.99.

"The concept of entertainment is clearly expanding to enable self-expression and creation in ways never before possible," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "Nintendo DSi is loaded with software to help people do exactly that. It's not just about the cameras or audio playback, but what people can do with these features that makes Nintendo DSi such an enjoyable game system."

Beyond the creative user experience, these features also give developers the tools to create new games and applications not previously possible. In the same way that WiiWare™ has given developers big and small a way to deliver their most original games directly to Wii™ users, Nintendo DSiWare™ provides access to the latest and most inventive hand-held games from a variety of studios and genres. Here are the Nintendo DSiWare titles that will be available when the Nintendo DSi Shop launches:

  • WarioWare™: Snapped! – Using the built-in Nintendo DSi camera, this outrageous title puts players right at the center of fast-paced mini-games, challenging them to race the clock and get a peek at Wario's photo album.
  • Bird & Beans™ – Using an elastic tongue, players must scramble to collect falling beans. The harder a bean is to catch, the more points it's worth.
  • Brain Age™ Express: Math – In this math-focused edition of the popular Brain Age series, players can enjoy a mix of new and familiar training exercises. A new Themes mode also lets Nintendo DSi users experiment with images and voice recordings in fun, unusual ways.
  • Master of Illusion™ Express: Funny Face – This game uses your Nintendo DSi as a prop in a card trick. Draw a face on the touch screen and astound your audience as the face tells them which playing card they picked.
  • Art Style™: AQUIA™ – The newest addition to the eye-popping Art Style series, this mesmerizing underwater puzzle game challenges players to help a scuba diver reach the ocean floor by matching a series of colored blocks.

In addition to a diverse, constantly expanding lineup of DSiWare game titles, visitors to the Nintendo DSi Shop can also download the free Nintendo DSi Browser to enjoy portable access to the Internet. Powered by Opera, this simple-to-use application makes use of the Nintendo DSi system's dual-screen display to provide fast, intuitive Web browsing.

As an incentive to get people connected and enjoying the online content, consumers who buy a Nintendo DSi system and connect it to the Nintendo DSi Shop by Oct. 5, 2009, will automatically receive 1,000 Nintendo DSi Points. (Visit dsioffer.nintendo.com for more details.) Software in the Nintendo DSi Shop will be available at four price points: free, 200 points, 500 points and 800+ points. Users can purchase additional Nintendo DSi Points in the Nintendo DSi Shop or via a Nintendo Points Card sold at retail locations. Nintendo DSi Points will be available in increments of 2,000 at an MSRP of $19.99.

Nintendo DSi allows users to create and share unique moments using a number of distinctive features. Two cameras – one pointing at the user when the system is open, one facing away – let people take photos and manipulate them with 10 built-in "lenses" including Distortion, Graffiti and Mischief. The cameras inspire creativity by letting users personalize their photos and trade them wirelessly with friends and family. The Nintendo DSi Sound application lets people put their own spin on their music with the ability to play and manipulate AAC sound files accessed from an SD card. These sonic tweaks are not saved or stored – they're meant for having fun on-the-fly, changing the pitch or playback speed of a clip with a simple touch of the stylus.

Nintendo DSi features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about Nintendo DSi, visit www.NintendoDSi.com.

    TalkBack / PREVIEWS: MADWORLD
    « on: October 07, 2008, 03:00:04 PM »
Black, white, and red ALL over.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=16909

MadWorld aims to bring a more visceral, mature experience to Wii. From the outset it was designed to appeal to the western market and its defining feature is the over the top, comic book style fantasy violence. It stars Jack, a regular guy who has found himself caught up in the murderous game, Death Watch. In order to remain alive and learn the story behind Death Watch and its terrorist creators, The Organizers, Jack must master a variety of weapons and items to utterly decimate his competitors.

MadWorld will feature a unique graphical presentation that involves a palette of only three colors, black and white to represent the world and characters, and red to display the copious amounts of blood spewed by defeated enemies. As one might expect, the game is meant to be over-the-top, and will feature humorous commentating during gameplay as well as ridiculous bosses and minigames.

Jack's main weapon is a chainsaw and there are new weapons to pick up throughout the levels, as well as the possibility of using objects you find in the scenery as a weapon, such as tires and posts. Using environmental items and defeating enemies creatively will increase your combo and therefore your score, which becomes important for reasons that are as yet to be announced.

In Death Watch it's every man for himself, and enemies will not only try to defeat you, but also each other. Just as you, they will also use the scattered items to dispatch their foes. Finishing moves are accomplished with gestures, and instructions on-screen will tell you the actions such as shaking the remote and nunchuk or holding them together and then pulling them apart.

The style of levels is not limited to roaming around the city using your chainsaw to kill people. To get from one area to another, timed motorcycle sections give you the chance to fight and avoid being hit while racing. One of the end bosses has Jack running away from a tornado, jumping over cars and avoiding obstacles, giving more of a platforming feel to the game.

Around the levels there are mini-games scattered and hidden away, known as Blood Bath Challenges. These continue with the ultra-violent theme with one of the games having you swing the Wii Remote to throw as many enemies into a pit as possible before a bed of spikes comes down to crush them all. The high scores are saved in a table. These mini-games can be played in hotseat against friends.

MadWorld will be available from Platinum Games and Sega early next year in North America. As yet, it is unannounced for the Japanese market.

    TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Wii Music
    « on: October 03, 2008, 09:44:35 PM »
A few additional details for the various play modes.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=16856

Wii Music has earned a reputation as an easy, unrestricted music game experience where the player chooses how to play. Most of the instruments are controlled with simple motions of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, held similarly to the real instruments. Examples are the Jazz Drums and Piano, using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to strike the drum set or piano as if they were in front of you. For the Acoustic Guitar and Violin, the Nunchuk is held high as if holding the instrument neck, and the Remote is used to strum or bow. The Saxophone is equally simple and played as expected, by tilting the Remote up and down to increase and decrease volume.

Each instrument in the game has different additional button controls for more customisation of the music. The piano uses the A button to repeat the last note played when extra notes are inserted and the B button to play a short, staccato note.

Since Wii Music is entirely based on improvisation, there are computer controlled Tutes who can jam with you when you are playing alone. Tutes can give you new ideas for how to play or just provide additional band members. Tutes will pick an instrument that is strongly featured in a song and perform a variety of techniques for each instrument. It is possible to follow along with these examples, learning techniques ranging from simple to advanced.

Each band is comprised of six players, with a maximum of four human players in multiplayer. There are two parts each assigned to the main melody and percussion, with one bass part and one part for chords. Solo play lets you add one part at a time, with additional parts played by Tutes, so you can choose the arrangement of the song.

In addition to the main band jam mode, there are several other modes including musical games and a playback mode that allows players to view enhanced videos created from recorded jam sessions. The previously announced "Ring the Bell" mode has been renamed Handbell Harmony, letting you play as part of a handbell ensemble and ringing the Wii Remote or Nunchuk when it's your turn. Pitch Perfect is the new name for "Ear For Music", a quiz to test your musical ear. Mii Maestro is the conducting mode using the Wii Remote as a baton. Finally, Drum Mode incorporates the Balance Board as part of the drum controls. Both feet are used and the Balance Board acts as virtual pedals for the bass drum and hi-hat symbol while the Remote and Nunchuk are used as drumsticks.

Band jam recordings can be sent through the Nintendo WiFi Connection to other Wii Friends who own Wii Music. Friends will be able to see the Miis chosen for the band, the play style, and the instrument choices. The recordings can either be viewed or modified, allowing friends to trade the same performance back and forth many times over.

Wii Music will be available in North America on October 20.

TalkBack / IMPRESSIONS: Star Wars: The Clone Wars
    « on: August 29, 2008, 06:40:42 PM »
Yes, you can now fight each other with lightsabers. It's that easy.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressionsArt.cfm?artid=16613

Lightsaber Duels is the upcoming Wii exclusive Star Wars title based on the recently released Clone Wars movie and the upcoming TV series. The Wii game features a single player mode and a two-player duel mode. While I didn't see the one player mode, the two-player mode is designed to allow you to replay the battles seen in the film with the motion controls of the Wii Remote.

The characters on display included Anakin, Obi-Wan, and new faces from Clone Wars. Each has different attributes: some are faster or slower, some with different combos and power. There are six characters initially, with a total of eleven available after they are unlocked by playing the single player mode.

Swinging the Wii Remote swings the lightsaber up, down, left, or right and repeatedly swinging gives combinations of these attacks. Aside from actually moving the lightsaber, the other actions are mapped to button presses. You move the character with the analogue stick on the nunchuck, jump, block, grab, and the force are mapped to buttons. Countering is done by holding block and swinging the Remote in the opposite direction. The game prompts you to hold the Wii Remote horizontally for better gesture recognition, this is especially important when the characters are locked together in close combat mode.

There are two meters for each character. One measures health and the other is the amount of force remaining. Once you use a move that requires the force, it drains the meter requiring you to wait until it is restored with time. Force moves are unblockable and will always cause damage if they connect. The only way to avoid them is to run or dodge. An additional meter increases with the number of combo moves you manage and when this is full it gives you a stronger force attack, with each character doing something different.

Your force powers include the ability to lift and throw objects on the stage. The stages are interactive and change from round to round. Each match is played as the best two of three rounds, so as it progresses parts will fall, get cut to pieces, electrocute you, or become more difficult to navigate for avoiding damage.

Occasionally during the duel, the lightsabers will clash in such a way that a special lock mode is activated. In this mode, the two players are required to complete a sequence of gestures to win the lock and score a hit on the other player. There are three types of these encounters, I saw one where each player races to complete a single gesture the fastest, and another when a sequence of moving the Wii Remote in one of the four directions fastest was required. This was one of the times when it helped to have the Remote horizontal so that the correct direction would be registered.

Konami have announced that a new franchise is in development for Nintendo DS. Time Hollow is an adventure game characterised by story development. The game takes players backwards through time to change events in the past in order to solve puzzles in the future. The deep storyline and integrated puzzles are its main features.

The story is written by Junko Kawano, who worked on Suikoden IV as a script writer and is instrumental in contributing to the unique style and appearance of the game. The story follows Ethan Kairos and his quest to find the cause of the mysterious disappearance of his family. While on this investigation, he discovers the Hollow Pen, a special object that has the power to open portals to the past. Using the stylus, players will be able to draw portals from the present to the past on the touch screen.

Time Hollow is due for release this Fall on Nintendo DS.

In this new story-driven adventure game, players journey through a time-bending adventure to solve the mysteries of the present by changing events of the past.

"A new franchise for Konami, Time Hollow delivers a unique adventure that will challenge and intrigue gamers with the combination of a deep storyline and clever puzzles," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia
    « on: July 23, 2008, 12:48:35 PM »
Swing your stylus in new lands with new Pokemon to tame and capture.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=16445

The second Pokemon Ranger game in the series takes you to a new area called the Almia Region. The game plays in much the same way as the first, differing from the usual Pokemon trainer format of the main series. Rather than catching Pokemon and keeping them, as a Ranger you tame wild Pokemon and control them temporarily with the Capture Styler.

It's possible to choose between a boy or girl Ranger at the start of the game. By drawing circles around wild Pokemon on the touch screen, they can be captured.  Pokemon are captured either to join your team temporarily as helpers or run off back into the wild if the purpose of the capture was to calm them down.  Temporary helpers follow behind you on screen. Captured Pokemon lend their abilities as Poke Assists or Field Moves. Poke Assists help to capture other Pokemon by working against their weaknesses and boosting the power of the Capture Styler. Field Moves can be used to clear obstacles and open new paths, or access Pokemon that cannot be reached.

As a Ranger, you're sent on missions by the Ranger Union. The first few will be training missions and as you complete more tasks you will advance up the ranks, gaining new powers until you eventually become a Top Ranger. Completing quests will earn power-ups, adding new functions to your Capture Styler and increasing your rank so you can control more Pokemon simultaneously.

The game includes hundreds of Pokemon, including those from the Diamond and Pearl games. It is due for launch on November 10, 2008.  Check out the trailer below.

Sword must first collect and use various objects including musical instruments to reveal the secret dungeons where prisoners are being held. But successfully saving them is another challenge altogether given a unique timed "shuffle" mechanic that reconfigures the dungeon prisons and hurts Sword and any survivors still caught within when the time runs out. Saved villagers will lend assistance to Sword's quest, as will the magical 'Fupongs' and dungeon treasure he finds that lets him shop in the village specialty stores for armor, weapons, health, medical aid and more.

AWAY Shuffle Dungeon allows players to navigate in both the 2D Shuffle Dungeons and the 3D Webb Village, and features voice-over cinematics that breathe life into the characters in this extraordinary mystery.

AWAY Shuffle Dungeon for Nintendo DS™ is expected to release this fall. For additional information about Majesco's exciting line of products, please visit www.majescoentertainment.com.

TalkBack / Ace Attorney: Prosecutor Edition Confirmed
    « on: April 09, 2008, 07:32:12 AM »
Capcom have confirmed Turnabout Prosecutor, a spin-off from the Phoenix Wright series on Nintendo DS. The lead characters will be Miles Edgeworth and Dick Gumshoe, both from the original series.
     http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15723

A project dubbed “New Turnabout Not Courtroom” was announced by Capcom to be revealed this month. The Ace Attorney series is known as “Turnabout Courtroom” in Japan so for a while, many people expected news of a continuing concert series. Few expected an Ace Attorney game with a viewpoint from the opposite side of the courtroom, as revealed in the most recent edition of the Japanese magazine, Famitsu.

With the title Turnabout Prosecutor, Miles Edgeworth, an iconic prosecutor from the Phoenix Wright series, becomes the main character. In the games, the prosecution and detectives work together to examine crime scenes and verify evidence. Accompanying Edgeworth will be the detective from the original series who was friendly with the defense, Dick Gumshoe.

Scans from the magazine show huge changes to the gameplay. Rather than a first person perspective and point-and-click interaction, the game shows the characters modelled from top to toe, walking around the scenes to examine evidence and inconsistencies that are present. There are new systems for search and deduction for interacting with crime scenes.

So far, there is no known release date for Turnabout Prosecutor.

TalkBack / This Week's Virtual Console

Two NES games this Monday. Yoshi's Cookie and Bases Loaded provide delicious puzzles and dual viewpoint baseball.
     http://nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15713

This week on Virtual Console we see two games that allow for 1-2 players. Yoshi's Cookie is a puzzle game of the matching multiple items type. Fill a row or column with the same type of cookie by shifting them around the screen and that line will disappear. There are around 100 stages to beat, or you can compete against a friend in two-player mode to see who can match the most cookies.

Bases Loaded is an arcade-style baseball game. Several options are available with twelve teams and thirty players, so you can choose from the different strengths of each. Controls go between choosing a pitch, covering all field positions, and batting. There  are two viewpoints shown while in play, behind the home plate and from the pitching mound.

Both games are available for download now for 500 Wii points.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

April 7, 2008  The arrival of April means springtime fun is officially back in season. To get Wii™ Shop Channel patrons in the spirit, we're pleased to offer a pair of lively NES® favorites. One is a breezy, puzzle-busting fantasy, the other a classic baseball title to keep sports fans fired up for a new season of nine-inning excitement. Whether your tastes run toward cookies or ballpark snacks, you'll find hours of gaming enjoyment right at your fingertips.

Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Yoshi's Cookie™ (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Take one part puzzle game, combine with intuitive game play, add a pinch of multiplayer action and top with a layer of everyone's favorite dinosaur. Mix together and let set for roughly 100 stages' worth of time. If that sounds like a winning recipe to you, then step into the kitchen and get ready for a batch of fast-paced puzzle action. Hunker down to move rows and columns of randomly placed cookies in an effort to align all the cookies of the same type. Successfully assemble a row or column to make the line disappear, then move to a new one. If you're good enough, you may even be able to make a Yoshi cookie appear! Feel like taking on a friend? Fire up the two-player mode, where you can attack your opponent while competing to match as many cookies as possible. Be careful, though—if your timing is off, you could end up attacking yourself. Who knew dinosaurs had such a weakness for puzzle games and sweets?

Bases Loaded (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Bases Loaded is a baseball game with an arcade feel and plenty of options from which players can choose. Select one of 12 teams, set your lineup from the 30 players available (each with different strengths), then play a single game or try to win the pennant. During game play, the screen shows two different viewpoints: one from behind home plate as you're batting, and the other from the pitching mound in a television-style shot (unique for its time) as your team plays in the field. Strong play control and excellent graphics add to the excitement as you decide what pitch to throw (you can even try to provoke the opposing batter into charging the mound), control all positions on the field, or do your best to get a hit. So step to the plate and find out why this is one of the most popular baseball games on the NES. Can you pull through in the clutch?

    TalkBack / IMPRESSIONS: Wii Fit
    « on: March 31, 2008, 01:19:39 AM »
A first look at the games and play modes of Wii Fit.
     http://nintendoworldreport.com/impressionsArt.cfm?artid=15666

My first thoughts when I saw Wii Fit running is how similar the concept is to Brain Age. It’s also obvious that Wii Fit is ideally intended as a unit for a multiple-person household in which each member can use the system at different times of day. Data for each person is stored in a profile, and you enter information including height and age so that your BMI can be calculated. This health metric is used to measure your daily progress. Graphs show the statistics for each person such as BMI, game time, and goal BMI if you choose to set one. Your Mii is used to represent you in each game and the size of the Mii's body changes depending on BMI score.

The Wii Remote is required to navigate menus when you are playing, so you'll find that you're holding the Wii Remote the entire time. Otherwise you'd be picking it up again every minute or two since the games are quite short.

Once you've finished admiring your calendars and graphs, you can choose between body test or training options. I never saw body test, but the training section has all of the games. Within training, there are four modes: aerobic exercise, yoga, muscle workout, and balance games. These each have their own page and you can change between them with the – and + buttons on the remote. There is an additional “favourites” page for frequently-chosen games. Only the first few games in each section are unlocked at the start, but your game minutes are added to a total as you play and more games unlock as the total increases. Different difficulty levels for each game are also unlocked as your playtime increases. Games are usually worth one or two minutes each, as they are all mini-games.

I played four of these mini-games and observed several more.  I had seen others before me play the ski slalom game, leaning left and right to weave between flags, so I chose ski jump. With the ski jumping exercise, you need to bend your knees and stay forward to align your weight with a dot within a small rectangle in the upper right of the screen. The rest of the screen shows your Mii careering down a ski jump run with instructions to extend your knees at the right so that you can jump as far as you can. I tried this four times with no success, but realised later that it was probably due to the weight being set incorrectly for me.

Next I tried a game of goalkeeping. With all of the Wii Fit games, you need to be consciously shifting your weight from left foot to right foot to have the best results. Movement above the waist doesn't help you very much. For goalkeeping, shifting your weight forward also helps you to return the ball. Successive saves multiply your score, while being hit by the other items reduces it.

Tightrope walking was an interesting game that I hadn't seen before. You stand normally on the balance board but step each foot up and down to move forwards. Often you'll find your Mii is leaning too far in one direction or the other and you'll have to remedy that before you fall off. At the half-way point of the rope there is a snapping bear trap you need to jump over. For any of the games with jumping involved, you don't actually jump on the balance board. You bend and extend your knees to make a weight shift.

I watched several people try the jogging game in aerobic exercise. This mode does not use the balance board; you either hold or put the Wii Remote in your pocket. On screen, a Mii runs in front to pace you, and your own Mii is transparent in the foreground. Then you just jog on the spot, with the Wii Remote picking up your movements. This game doesn't require you to watch your television; you can easily change to another television channel or jog around the house, within range of the Wii Remote of course. There is also a two-player mode, the only game to have such a mode out of the ones unlocked.

The final game I was able to try was step aerobics. I found this to be like DDR but not fun. On easy mode it wasn't very tiring either. I think that the only time I saw someone exert themselves the entire evening was when one person tried to beat their pacing character in jogging. And that game doesn't even use the balance board.

You really get the idea that this game is made to be played at different times of day by each member of the family. There is not much point in playing together as the tasks are relatively simple, and you must change your profile otherwise games won't function correctly due to the difference in weight. There doesn't seem to be support for multiple balance boards.

For me, the games aren't interesting enough to hold my attention for a long time. It's the family interaction aspect and getting everyone active on the balance board that will be the appeal of this title.

The game will deliver a unique Guitar Hero® experience by challenging handheld gamers to rock out and prove their shredding skills on the most diverse set list of master tracks ever offered in a Guitar Hero game, including classic rock, alternative and pop favorites such as Nirvana, OK Go and No Doubt.

The game will be packaged with a revolutionary Guitar HeroTM Guitar GripTM peripheral that fits snugly into the DS and a unique Guitar Hero pick-stylus that brings a new dimension to handheld gaming and the core gameplay that defines Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero: On Tour has been designed specifically for the DS platform and will offer the DS audience an all-new compelling music experience.

"We are continuing to introduce new and exciting ways to bring music to audiences with Guitar Hero," said Dusty Welch, head of publishing for Activision/RedOctane. "The Guitar Hero Guitar Grip redefines how games can be played on handheld systems and the integration of the microphone and touch screen gameplay on the DS, further illustrates Guitar Hero's leadership in delivering the most unique and creative quality hardware and software on the market."

"We've taken all of our learnings on the DS platform to date and pushed it to the limits to create a truly innovative Guitar Hero experience."

Guitar Hero: On Tour continues to build on the franchise's signature easy-to-play, yet difficult to master addictive gameplay, and now lets players take their experience on the road wherever they go. Players use the Guitar Hero pick-stylus on the touch screen to strum their favorite tunes and create their rock 'n' roll legacy in career mode.

Fans can also join together to play co-op mode using a local wireless network, or battle each other in a Guitar Duel using new Battle Items unique to the DS platform. TalkBack / Games Convention Moves to Cologne
    « on: February 25, 2008, 01:32:46 PM »
The Leipzig Games Convention, held annually since August 2002, will be moving to Cologne in 2009 and rebranded GAMESCom.
     http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=15403

The German Federal Association for Entertainment Software (BUI), creators of the Games Convention, have announced there is to be no further support for GC Leipzig from 2009,  with the creation of a new consumer show based in Cologne in the East of Germany as replacement. This would allow the show to further expand, as it has been over the years to become the largest consumer show in the world.

GC 2007 was the largest yet at 185,000 visitors, a larger number than those for Tokyo Game Show. Projected figures for last year however, were 200,000, and the lack of available hotel rooms in Leipzig and the surrounding area, plus international flights to the area being inconvenient, were blamed for the lower-than-expected attendee numbers. A move to Cologne would provide better international transport links and accommodation provision for visitors.

Rather than paying for the license fee to Messe Leipzig for the Games Convention brand, the BUI is  taking the GAMESCom name for the consumer show from the Cologne-based organiser Koelnmesse. There is a possibility for Messe Leipzig to go ahead with GC 2009, but the show will be unsupported by BUI.

Exclusive Agreements Renewed Through 2012 Season

REDWOOD CITY, Calif--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 2008--Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS) today announced an extension of its exclusive licensing relationships with the National Football League and NFL PLAYERS to develop, publish and distribute interactive football video games. These agreements - which were negotiated separately and are extensions of contracts originally signed in December 2004 - provide EA continued rights to NFL teams, stadiums and players for its critically-acclaimed and best-selling football videogames through the end of the 2012 season, which culminates in February 2013.

Both agreements include all aspects of the interactive experience, including console and handheld games as well as console-based online features. The agreements also provide EA access to both NFL Films and the NFL Network to enrich its game experiences. Financial terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

"This is all about bringing authenticity and realism to NFL videogames," said Eric Grubman, President of NFL Ventures. "EA SPORTS continually works to maintain the cutting edge for NFL products across a variety of gaming platforms. We like the fact that they never rest."

"This is great news and it means we can continue to produce the best interactive experience possible. It also allows NFL PLAYERS, the NFL and EA to continue to build our brands," said Gene Upshaw, Chairman of NFL PLAYERS and Executive Director of the National Football League Players Association. "We offer a very unique experience. "

"We are excited about the opportunity to extend and expand our relationships with the NFL and NFL PLAYERS," said Peter Moore, President of EA SPORTS(TM). "For nearly two decades, EA SPORTS has been bringing sports fans closer to the great game of football through the breakthrough interactive experiences of our videogames. Game quality is our top priority, and we're committed to pushing our gameplay innovation, connecting football fans via rich online experiences and delivering the most visually stunning sports games on the market."

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2008, EA's Madden NFL franchise has consistently been one of the videogame industry's best-selling and top-rated products, generating more than $2 billion in retail sales. Madden NFL 08 earned awards from the 2007 Game Critics Awards at the E3 Media and Business Summit, The SpikeTV Video Game Awards, and the GameSpot Readers Choice Awards last year. The game is available on the PLAYSTATION(R)3 and PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment systems, Xbox 360(TM) and Xbox(R) videogame and entertainment systems from Microsoft, Nintendo DS(TM), Wii(TM), PC, PSP(R) (PlayStation(R)Portable) handheld entertainment system, mobile handsets and Mac. EA also produces the arcade-football game NFL Tour which hit stores in January 2008, and NFL Head Coach, which was released in 2006.      Ex-Naughty Dogs Form Steel Penny Games, Become WiiWare Dev

AUSTIN, TX - Steel Penny Games, an independent Austin, TX-based game developer, announced their acceptance into the Nintendo WiiWare developer stable, and is busy at work on an original IP title set to release in mid-2008. Steel Penny Games states that the upcoming title blends a challenging puzzle game with dramatic fantasy environments and appealing characters for an exceptionally satisfying experience. Other details about the upcoming product are not available at this time.

The company, organized in early 2007 by former Naughty Dog veterans Jason Hughes and Andrew Gilmour, joins the ranks of studios initially focused on digital distribution. Steel Penny Games president Jason Hughes described their strategy as "the modern equivalent of the garage method for an independent to gain a foothold in the industry-a unique opportunity WiiWare presents that we appreciate." At Naughty Dog, Hughes was a senior graphics tools engineer, and Gilmour was a senior background artist.

The team at Steel Penny Games have spent the past year building a proprietary engine geared toward the Wii platform's capabilities, and creating a new intellectual property to span a series of games. Hughes elaborated, "I am impressed with the egalitarian approach Nintendo has taken toward WiiWare developers. It allows the risk burden to shift back onto the creative developers."
