I think this is a good idea, but I don't have stroke around here to put it in place.  I'll bring it up at our next staff meeting, however.

Ian, I think a lot of it has to do with how much something has been done before.  CoD4 is a graphical masterpiece, but its setting and characters - a war-torn current-day/WW2 battleground populated by grizzled soldiers - has been absolutely done to death.  I think that's why people love, say, Team Fortess 2 or the TimeSplitters series so much, because they take you to a world that's very different from all the other games out there.

De Blob is another example.  The gameplay has been done elsewhere (and done better), but it has so much graphical charm that people are really drawn to it.

I agree - this is the last thing Nintendo would do.  They'd rather not even have DLC, I'm sure.

I think the real issue is that this DLC is a rip-off, plain and simple.  It's not worth the extra $8.00 you'd pay for it.  Paying for a Hard and Super-Hard mode?  Are you kidding me?  At this rate, I'm surprised they didn't make you pay for each boss.

It will depend on how it sells, but you typically don't see first-party Nintendo games drop below $39.99 until the become Player's Choice titles.

But you can typically pick them up for cheap at B&M stores well before that happens.

Leave it to Capcom to foster goodwill with its audience, and then crap all over it at the first opportunity.

There has to be some sort of pattern with VC.  Maybe it correlates to weeks when there aren't any decent Wii releases...

...which is immediately debunked by the fact that Wario Land: Shake It! comes out tomorrow.

Regardless, if they give MM1 and MM2 graphics scores in the 8's, and MM9 is a graphical equivalent to those two games and is literally made to look just like, or maybe marginally better than, those games, why score it a 3.0?

It's madness!!!

I recommend that you buy Wario Land: Shake It! for $49.99 and enjoy it.  That's what I recommend.

So I guess we'll have to do 116 all over again, right?  I'm OK with that...I saw it as a missed opportunity anyways.  We didn't "go there" enough.

But how do you really know how it was intended to look?

Maybe because the Nintendo press release states:

"Mega Man™ 9 (CAPCOM, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Cartoon Violence, 1,000 Wii Points): Mega Man fans, the wait is over! The classic Blue Bomber that debuted in 1987 is back with the ninth installment in the classic series. It's a new adventure for Mega Man done in an 8-bit style-graphics, music and gameplay are all like you remember them."

I think that pretty much states their intent.

Why shouldn't they be relative?  The Wii is cheaper than PS3 and 360 because it uses older system architecture that doesn't cost as much to produce as the system architecture in the other consoles.  Therefore the cost of the Wii makes perfect sense to me.  Wario Land: Shake It uses older 2D technology that doesn't require the cost investment of newer 3D technology.  Why shouldn't it be a little cheaper?  I don't think that's illogical.

If I wanted an amazing 2D game, there's plenty of cheap stuff out there to choose from on GameCube, VC, PSN, XBLA, etc.

I'd say Super Mario 64, followed by Ocarina of Time.  Both of those games have a style that doesn't require realism.

Metal Gear Solid looks pretty assy nowadays.

Can I trust MS, Sony, or even Nintendo, to still even be in the games business, much less have a game be on their servers, after 23 years?  I think not.

Agreed, but somebody will own the rights to those games, and they'll put them up somewhere to make money off of them.  Look at Steam's id Super Pack.  Some of those games are 18 years old, but there they are, available for download.  Granted you have to pay for them, but they're available.  And then there's also the Virtual Console...some of those games are 20+ years old as well.

As "retro gaming" has risen in popularity, companies have finally realized the value of their back catalogs.  I don't think games will fade away like they have in the past.  They'll either be re-released or repackaged, because the market has shown that there's a demand there.

I'm just saying that, in my opinion, there are very similar products out there that I could get similar enjoyment out of at a much lower price point.

I was referring to the Japanese almost completely ignoring the 360 up to this point.  The Japanese do not ignore Western products, they only ignore Western Microsoft products aside from Ace Combat 6 and a couple of other choice titles.

I'm not talking about a system's capabilities, I'm talking about scoring the game based on the way it was intended to look.  If Capcom had said, "We want MM9 to look like Bionic Commando: Rearmed", and then delivered the game with NES graphics, then by all means give it a 3.0.  But when Capcom openly says, "We're going to go retro and make this look and play exactly like the NES originals", why not reset your baseline and compare its graphics to the NES originals that it's designed to emulate?

Mega Man 9 is essentially a new NES game.  That's what it was intended to be all along, no more, no less.  I think it should be held to the highest standards among NES games, not the highest standards of the current generation of consoles.  Mega Man 9 is an interesting case, though; it's likely the first brand-new game released on a current hardware platform that's deliberately designed to look like it's on an early platform.  It's a "dream scenario" kind of product that hasn't required classification before.

Has there EVER been a perception (outside a small fraction of the internet hardcore) that 2D is "simpler and should be cheaper" than a 3D game?  I don't really think so...

I do, now.  I mean, when top-quality 2D games like Ikaruga and Braid are being released on Xbox Live Arcade for $15 or less, it somehow makes me reluctant to pay "full price" for anything 2D.  The market has dictated that, to some degree.  It's also the fact that a lot of the best 2D stuff now comes on the Nintendo DS at a $35-and-below price point.  Games developed for XBLA and DS are typically made for those platforms because they're smaller projects requiring less people, and are cheaper to make.  I've said this before - you can't tell me that it cost Nintendo a fifth of the money to make Wario Land: Shake It than it did any of its other 3D first-party games, yet they sell it at the same price.  I can't help but feel that that's kind of a rip.

I'd be amazed if LBP does big numbers in Japan.  It's quirky enough to appeal to them though, that's for sure.  And it is a Sony (read: Japanese) product, which guarantees that the Japanese market won't completely ignore it.
