Podcast Discussion / Episode 557: Corrugated AIBO
« on: February 04, 2018, 09:08:37 AM »

I'll feed him, and love him, and pick-up after him, and tape his leg back on...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/46358/episode-557-corrugated-aibo

One week removed from Nintendo abrogating their responsibility to help introverts to communicate openly, Radio Free Nintendo continues communicating far more openly than the world probably wants. We kick off New Business with Greg offering impressions of Celeste. The highly praised, highly difficult, and highly customizable platformer comes with a strong recommendation. Jon claws his way out of menus to give us impressions of Monster Hunter World. After we get over embarrassing former NWR staffer Matt Walker, Jon talks about how much he loves to despoil the natural world and dress up his cats - a species known for their distaste of water - for swimming. These are things he greatly enjoys doing. Jon is a sociopath. The bitter taste of review games still lingered in James' mouth, so he pulled Titanfall 2 out of his backlog. This fast-paced, robophilic shooter/platformer has one of the most exciting single-player FPS campaigns in ages. Even if you're not into online play, the single-player alone is worth the price of admission. Guillaume closes out New Business with a duo of games. First he takes a look at the PC version of Mercenary Kings, which will be released soon for Switch. The side-scrolling shooter will fit in nicely with all the Metal Slug re-releases from Hamster in the coming weeks. He ends New Business with some final thoughts on Thimbleweed Park.

After the break, we summon the darkest magic in order to make our predictions for 2018. You demand them, and we lack the personal conviction to refuse. Listen as we get everything wrong. Honestly, if we tried to be wrong we'd probably do better. This year we're calling for a 3DS Kirby platforming game to exist. No, we know there's a Switch Kirby game coming out. And yes, there's two Kirby 3DS platformers already. Who cares, this prediction has already created the parallel reality where an already in-development Kirby game simply ceased to exist. At least we didn't have to do predictions last year, and are thus spared hearing about all the things our curse unmade.

Speaking of unmaking video games, last week we announced our Eulogy to WiiWare RetroActive plans. We're going to do two RetroActive Minis in the same week, but due to scheduling we're going to have to move the show one more week. We'll be doing our RetroActives on Bonsai Barber and You, Me and the Cubes as part of Episode 559. Please post your impressions in the talkback threads. And as always, you can send us your thoughts via our inbox.

We're breaking new ground in irrelevant episode titles. It's not even the holidays anymore...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/46301/episode-556-give-the-gift-of-protein-this-holiday-season

It's finally time for us to announce our plans for the Non-rigged WiiWare RetroActive, and like any good entertainment product you're going to have to wait! That was a tease.

Instead, we start the show off by taking Nintendo to task. Since our last recording Nintendo silenced The Voice of a Nation with the release of v.1.2.0 of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The removal of the Ardanian battlecry "Don't forget me!" should not be ignored. For those who want to keep it alive in their hearts, James has captured their call, for the future (warning, some spoilers). They also killed Miitomo but...they could have done worse things.

After a through tongue-lashing, we move on to New Business. James somehow ended up reviewing games again. Of Mice and Sand Revisited is a pretty good exploration/building game (think FTL) starring mice in the desert. Oh... Sir! The Hollywood Roast is trash. Shameful trash. Guillaume just can't get away from LEGO Star Wars, this time looking at The Force Awakens. It spends a surprising amount of time covering movies that aren't The Force Awakens, which is probably more about the movie than the game design. He also got a crack at four-player Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. He'd previously played it in two-player mode, but finds this configuration significantly more chaotic. Jon and James talk about their time with Rare's Sea Of Thieves beta. They're both pretty confused as to what this game really is. Maybe it's because of features not available in the beta, or maybe it's because they're both idiots. But still, they care, because it's Rare. Greg doesn't know it yet, but he's about to become "The Musou Guy", with a look at Fire Emblem Warriors. This one has some weird quirks that make it more Fire Emblem-like.

After the break, it's time for Listener Mail.

This week we set new records in inefficiency, managing only two topics! First we name some games that took time to "click" with us, only to become among our favorites, then we debate the merits of Nintendo's decision to not bundle 1-2-Switch and to wait on the Virtual Console. It's not a huge debate, to be honest. You can send us questions that I'll grossly mischaracterize as debates by sending us an email.

We've finally decided our plan for the WiiWare RetroActive. We decided that most of the WiiWare's library isn't suited to a RetroActive, but that's never stopped us before! Instead we'll be doing a series of small "RetroActive Very Minis" to cover multiple games, starting in Episode 558. Our first two games are You, Me, and the Cubes and Bonsai Barber. That's right, TWO games! We plan to give each game about 30 minutes. With our quick turn-around you should start playing now! The talkback for You, Me and the Cubes and Bonsai Barber are now open.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 555: Cardboard Box Hunter
« on: January 21, 2018, 12:04:18 PM »

Jon thinks this title is real clever; I even resisted the urge to ask him about collector's edition cardboard.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/46262/episode-555-cardboard-box-hunter

Everyone's eager to hear team RFN talk about Nintendo's new Cardboard Entertainment System, but you're going to have to wait till the second half of the show. James was late, so Greg takes over hosting New Business. Guillaume kicks off with LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, from way back on the PS3. He then looks at Thimbleweed Park, the retro-style point-and-click from the creators of Maniac Mansion and other classics of the genre. Jon is trudging around in the mud in Gears of War 4, on his Xbox One X - The World's Most Powerful Console. Greg wraps-up both the game and New Business with his thoughts on Xenoblade Chronicles 2. James isn't around to meet him with a high five, but they might find time later to compare notes.

James retakes the wheel after the break, to talk Nintendo Labo - Nintendo's just-announced cardboard construction toys for Switch. Apparently, Greg had been promising James would bring enough hot fire to shame the Sun, but he misjudged James' love of construction toys. Who on the show is going to be filling their home with piles of cardboard? Jon, but that's just the packing material for cat helmets.

Next week we'll be announcing our plans for our contractually-obligated second WiiWare RetroActive. Thanks to the fine folk at the Nintendo Reddit, we have a list of WiiWare exclusive titles to reference. You can let us know which of these games are winners, or just ask us questions via the inbox.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 554: My Son, Waluigi
« on: January 14, 2018, 10:11:14 AM »

Parenting doesn't come with a Funky Mode.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/46214/episode-554-my-son-waluigi

Nintendo knows what they're doing. Yet again, RFN has to adapt to a series of recording-day announcements. This time, we're running through the January 11 Nintendo Direct Mini. It's more than just ports and Kongs; Nintendo announced a cutie-fighter from SNK, and the return of a story mode to Mario Tennis. It was only about 15 minutes, but we spend nearly an hour breaking it down. This is probably where you're expecting a "Funky Mode" joke, but we're well beyond that.

Or rather, we already made a "Funky Mode" joke.

After the break we have a short New Business. James sets aside his rambling excitement for SNK Heroines to talk about the demo for Dragon Quest Builders, released immediately following the Direct. He's surprisingly positive about a "more linear" take on Minecraft. Guillaume offers a quick update on Etrian Odyssey V before talking about early-2000s French adventure game Syberia. Il ne fut pas particulièrement impressionné. Greg is right at the end of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, opting to wait until the game's conclusion to offer any additional thoughts. Jon closes out New Business with current money-press PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds for Xbox One X, The World's Most...oh, forget it. He's bought into the game's tension and risk/reward decisions. He is no doubt looking forward to 2020's Dragon Quest: Battlegrounds. He also has thoughts on Thumper, a strange but great rhythm-action game now available on everything.

With a few spare minutes, we manage to answer a single email: My son has a vivid imagination. How do I prevent it from becoming TOO vivid? You can send your inquires as to how to parent mustachioed babies to our mailbag.

My numbers 1, 2, and 3 game of the year are all Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/46142/episode-553-a-top-five-is-easier-when-more-than-four-games-come-out

We made it to January, an exasperated celebration that seems to happen at the start of every year, which means it's time for Radio Free Nintendo to tell you what were the best games of 2017. For those that don't know, each member of Team RFN makes a personal list and we reveal them in a round-robin format. There's no "Official" RFN Game of 2017 but...well you'll see. This year we also solicited some Top 5 lists from RFN guests, just to add some spice to the proceedings.

After the break we catch up on what everyone played during the break with New Business. In the interests of time, Greg passed since he's been playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2, so Guillaume kicks off with two puzzle games for Switch: Mom Hid My Game! and Gorogoa. Mom Hid My Game! is a slapstick quest to find a child's confiscated video game system, whereas Gorogoa is an artist's vision for the same genre. Jon finished up Wolfenstein II, soon to come to Switch, and clearly enjoyed his time liberating America from Nazis. James wraps up New Business with quick thoughts on Gravity Rush 2 ("They somehow fixed nothing from Gravity Rush") and Battle Chef Brigade ("I miss Iron Chef").

No emails this week, but if you want to start our 2018 off right, you can send us your questions via the inbox.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 551: Two Pinballs Came at Once
« on: December 17, 2017, 08:30:52 AM »

I saw a movie like that. It was nuts.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/46040/episode-551-two-pinballs-came-at-once

The holidays are upon us, and that means more time to ignore family and play video games. We've done just that! All of us have been playing the free-to-play Pinball FX3, now available for Switch. Menus aside, it's a pretty solid pinball game - which is good because Greg also played Stern Pinball Arcade, also for Switch, that came out exactly the same day. It's an interesting contrast, with each game having its own advantages over the other. But, Pinball FX3 has online leader boards. You can beat your friends, gloat online, and then get humiliated when they quadruple your score. James and Jon, in preparation for survival inside their biodome, played the trial for Monster Hunter World. Stalking giant dinosaurs that puke "mud" at you has never been so high-rez. They're a little surprised that the game isn't more of a departure from previous entries in the series, and confirm that this is some Monster Hunter-ass-Monster Hunter. Guillaume has let enough time pass from the Etrian Odyssey deluge of 2015-2016 that he's able to get into Etrian Odyssey V. This one is "for the fans", removing many of the conveniences of later Etrian games and reverting to the "pureness" of the original title. Play EOIV instead. He also got his hands on Has-Been Heroes but found himself unimpressed with the strategy/roguelike hybrid. Greg and James round out New Business with an update on Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Very minor "spoilers" in the form of discussing specific rare Blades await, but it's nothing you probably haven't seen on Twitter anyway.

After the break, we attack a trio of emails. We start with two emails dealing with Nintendo's monetization strategy, one dealing with micro-transactions and the other on the fate of 3DS-style games within their Mobile ecosystem. Our third email asks us for our "Christmas Wish"; nobody asks for Peace on Earth, unsurprising for this bunch of misanthropes. You can send us your Christmas Card via the inbox.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 550: Strip That Village to the Bone!
« on: December 10, 2017, 08:23:00 AM »

Jon "Business" Lindemann's plans lead where even James Jones cannot follow.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45982/episode-550-strip-that-village-to-the-bone

Still bleary-eyed from Saturday's successful telethon, the team reassembled for another milestone episode. James and Greg kick-off New Business with a look at Xenoblade Chronicles 2. From a story standpoint, they aren't that far apart, but James' incessant wandering has created a huge gulf in playtime. Both impressions are early, but it might be possible that some of the impact from Xenoblade's world-building has been lost three games in. Greg then switches dance partners to talk more Skyrim with Jon. Turns out that there are two ways to play Skyrim: finishing it and not. Guillaume finally finished off Metroid: Samus Returns, presumably being lapped well-over 200 times by Greg in the process. He's not enamored with this return to 2D. He also continues his gaming-out-of-time with Tumblestone for Wii U.

After the break, it's time for Listener Mail. This week we handle two emails. One asks us to create Weird Al-style parody songs and the other requests we map out a merely "fine" 2018, in light of Nintendo's 2017 efforts. The first email quickly turns into a chat about Mega Man 11, and the second was continually being complicated by Nintendo's announcements at The Game Awards, which ran alongside recording. You can write us parody emails via the inbox.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 549: New Releases - The Hairy Palms Pack
« on: November 26, 2017, 08:44:27 AM »

Spend this much time on your past and you'll go blind.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45901/episode-549-new-releases-the-hairy-palms-pack

We're days away from the Nintendo World Report Telethon to support Child's Play charity. If you've somehow missed the announcement, we'll be live starting at 11:30 AM Eastern on Saturday, December 2. All the details are here. An additional reminder, RFN will be doing our live La-Mulana RetroActive at noon, so get started if you're not already playing.

James kicks-off New Business this week with impressions of Thimbleweed Park, a retro-styled point-and-click adventure from the creators of classics like Maniac Mansion. Faithful to their legacy, it's a fine title for those that appreciate games of this style, although the back-patting can be a bit extreme. He also offers a passing review of the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney manga. It's a heck of a ride.

Greg gives an update on the Switch version of Rocket League. Graphical compromises necessary to get the game running on Switch seem totally justified in the service of portable play. He and Jon then tag-team Skyrim. Greg (on Switch) is playing it for the first time, whereas Jon (on Xbox One X The world's most powerful console) is taking another pass at it. They both are enjoying the expansive world, and sheer breadth of content. Jon even leverages his extensive experience with the opening hours of Skyrim to offer some advice for first-timers. Guillaume is also playing an adventure game, Stick It to The Man on Wii U, just before it comes out on Switch. He finds that the early charm ultimately gives way to a less enjoyable experience. Also in disappointment this week, he has thoughts on Hey! Pikmin. At least in this case his disappointment was anticipated, which seems like a contradiction.

After the break, we take a stab at three Listener Mail emails. This week we: talk about Games as a Service (and continuous DLC) versus using content patches to fix a game post-release, name a bunch of Mario games, and determine how many Moons are enough Moons. You can ask us to pick your next game for you by sending us an email.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 547: Touchin' on Tub Time
« on: November 12, 2017, 10:34:25 AM »

Jon's Switch is doomed. It's just a matter of time.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45826/episode-547-touchin-on-tub-time

We're back together this week. Gui kicks off New Business impressions of Cave Story+, for Switch. As the tenth platform to receive a version of Cave Story, we don't have a lot to add this time. Gui also talks about Elliot Quest on Wii U, and catches up with Metroid: Samus Returns. Jon has a look at Wolfenstein II, coming next year to Switch, but he's playing it on THE MOST POWERFUL CONSOLE OF ALL TIME Xbox One X. BJ kills Nazis so good with all those gigaflops. Greg and James conclude New Business with very late-game updates on Super Mario Odyssey. Their meandering conversation concludes controls, mechanics, structure, and some very specific challenges the game presents. Light spoilers are present for those sensitive to such things.

After the break, we hit on some email. This week we: take a look at modding our systems, figure out what games will most suffer with the death of the Miiverse, and create new Nintendo Panel De Pon mashups. You can send us your game pitches via the inbox.

Coming up, on December 2, it will be time for the 8th Annual NWR Telethon. RFN will be kicking off the show at noon, with our next RetroActive: La-Mulana for WiiWare. There was a poll. Things happened. Here we are. We hope you can join us. The talkback thread for the RetroActive is now open.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 545: Gangsta-Ass Console
« on: October 29, 2017, 10:10:40 AM »

In this case, "O.G." stands for "Odyssey Game." It's out, and it's gangsta.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45742/episode-545-gangsta-ass-console

Thanks to the magic of time zones, Greg has Super Mario Odyssey. We made him wait. James kicks off New Business with Jonny Metts' trash, a duo of GameCube games he sent to James in an unmarked package. First up is an import copy of Beach Strikers. Pringles, Coca-Cola, America, and Future Cop are all in play (video available). James also has impressions of PC Genjin, a poor GameCube port of the PC Engine/TG-16 classic Bonk's Adventure (video available, with less product placement). Jon pre-ordered the SNES Edition of the New 3DS XL, a device he admits is "ugly" but can't look away from. This is a cry for help, and we fail him utterly. Guillaume continues to make weird library checkouts with The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+. He also looks at Halloween Costume Quest 2, which he enjoys despite finding its console performance lacking (he recommends it on PC instead). He finishes up with Super Castlevania IV, an RFN staple. Greg wraps up New Business with a look at an obscure title that released on Switch a few hours prior to recording called Super Mario Odyssey. His impressions are very early, and if you're reading this you've probably already played more of the game than he had. Rest assured, next week we'll all be ready to go.

Just two emails this week, inquiring as to what games will constitute Nintendo's 2018 line-up, and what Indie games we are excited to play. You can stealth-ask us for an impromptu predictions segment by sending us an email.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 543: Podcast Seeking Tax Credits
« on: October 15, 2017, 09:52:51 AM »

Our Hall of Fame will attract tens of visitors a year.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45645/episode-543-podcast-seeking-tax-credits

The Mario Odyssey countdown clock inches ever closer to zero, but for now we wait. James kicks off New Business with...the new demo of Super Mario Odyssey! A short tour of Tostarena provided endless diversions, and James burned through the demo timer with effectively no progress towards the stated goal. James also has early impressions of Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy. Syrenne did warn him, but early impressions are not promising. Jon was convinced to try TumbleSeed, a modern take on the old arcade machine Ice Cold Beer. He's enjoying getting it in the hole. Greg has also boarded the steam train - the SteamWorld Dig 2 train, that is. He heaps his own praise on this already well-praised game. Guillaume found time for some family fun with the crowd-pleaser The Jackbox Party Pack 3. Conversely, Snipperclips might expect too much of players for those without gaming experience, and Overcooked proves cooking with children is a nightmare.

After the break we bust out a trio of Listener Mail. This week we induct the first members of our Hall of Fame, revisit our earliest Nintendo memories, and examine the legacy of the Wii Shop Channel. You can write our press releases by sending us an email.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 542: Just to Get Alexey's Beak Wet
« on: October 08, 2017, 10:42:00 AM »

Licensing agreements mean this can be the only podcast approved by The Tetris Company.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45605/episode-542-just-to-get-alexeys-beak-wet

The entire complement of RFN is back, and we've got a lot of impressions from Nintendo's newest unobtainable retro console. Guillaume kicks-off New Business looking at the SNES Classic Mini, and trying to find a game to play with Karen (that wasn't already on the Virtual Console). Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island finally being properly available turns out to do the trick. We find some time to answer the most important Yoshi question: who is naming these games? Greg also has a Classic Mini, and walks us through the influential-yet-unreleased Star Fox 2. It turns out that even though you've never played this game, you've absolutely played its parts - even if it's very different than its predecessor. Gui wraps up his New Business with some memories of Oxenfree, coming to Switch this week. Jon has two new Non-tendo games: Forza 7 and Cuphead. Both look amazing, but only one has anime skins. Maybe in Cuphead 2. James concludes New Business with some final thoughts on Golf Story, and an odyssey of his own: finding a Mario Odyssey demo kiosk.

Listener Mail is an embarrassment of riches. This week: Greg warns of Sheikh Toxic Moron's 3D Confusion Maze, we determine how to ice Mario so Starfy can shine, we replace terrible game titles, and try to restrain our compulsion to buy limited editions of consoles. If you have a PayPal account, deep pockets, and a compulsive desire to buy people things you can send us your contact information (or a question, I guess) to the inbox.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 541: Toad of a Particular Colour

The Queen's English makes this far worse.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45564/episode-541-toad-of-a-particular-colour

Greg was disgusted by the clemency shown Jon "The Unprofessional" Lindemann in allowing his return, so he took the week off in protest. In his place, we're joined by Alex Dyke of Say Whatever Podcast. Alex kicks off New Business with a look at Phantom Trigger for Switch. The Hyper Light Drifter comparisons are inescapable, but he hasn't yet had the time to judge if the game can stand on its own merits. Instead, disaster pointed him towards Mario Party: Star Rush. He insists it's good; the rest of the crew remains skeptical. Guillaume has impressions of SteamWorld Dig 2, which has been digging up rave reviews. He also takes a look at cooperative platformer shooter Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, along with the latest update to Super Mario Run. Surprising no-one, Jon has impressions of Metroid: Samus Returns. Much like Greg, he greatly enjoys Samus' return to 2D. Unlike Greg, he doesn't try to gin up the Metroid fans about their series' perceived death. James concludes New Business with the Newest Business: Golf Story for Switch. Released hours earlier, his impressions are based on almost exactly one hour of gameplay, viewable here.

After the break we return to Listener Mail. This week we tackle two questions: what the heck is a Rogue-like, and what is the significance of Tencent's Arena of Valor coming to Switch. Technically, we answered three emails. We're not THAT slow. You can ask us a question via the inbox.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 539: Y Can't Fancy Dan Crawl
« on: September 17, 2017, 10:27:44 AM »

RIP Miiverse.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45455/episode-539-y-cant-fancy-dan-crawl

Nintendo "graced" us with a brand-new Direct this week, and 45 minutes of content somehow managed to dominate the vast majority of a two-hour podcast. In the first half, RFN reacts to nearly every part of the Direct, from finally seeing the 3DS Kirby brawler to the announcement of Wolfenstein II and Doom for Switch. Even our resident Grampy Dragon has positive things to say.

After the break we conclude our coverage of the Nintendo Direct AND kick-off New Business with Greg and James' impressions of the Project Octopath Traveler demo. Guillaume continues to research his electoral campaign for Mayor of Metro City, with a look at Final Fight 2 and 3. He concludes with negative impressions of ACA NEOGEO SPIN MASTER. Jon closes out the show by stalling for 14 minutes while he waited for Metroid: Samus Returns to unlock. Unprofessionalism permeates everything we do. You can volunteer for the Metro City Community Watch by sending us an email.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 538: Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot
« on: September 10, 2017, 10:45:24 AM »

We all want to be Marion Cobretti, but someone's got to be Snaps Provolone.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45373/episode-538-stop-or-my-mom-will-shoot

It's the time of year where we have a veritable bevy of New Business. Jon has hands-on with retro-revival Sonic Mania, thanks to a screw-up at Sega and the generosity of listener Sgt. Flowers. He is actually surprised at the joy he's finding in this throwback to a 1994 2D Sonic that never was. We're sure Sonic Forces will hit the same high quality bar. He also has hands-on with Destiny 2, this time with in-game story. He's similarly happy with this sequel. Jon's getting all the best Engrams. Guillaume made good use of Nintendo rewards, scoring a discount on Picross 3D: Round 2. He loves it, which makes sense, or should I say IT ADDS UP? I shouldn't. He and Karen have been playing a lot of 2D brawlers, with some special attention paid to Double Dragon Neon (which he is cool on) and classics like Simpsons Arcade (which is still great). James is back to his organized crime roots with Yakuza Kiwami. This game is a remake/sequel; modernizing the PS2 original while also trying to mesh it with prequel Yakuza 0. Kiwami is quite a bit smaller than 0, which also came out this year, but it's still a dopey crime story. James and Greg have both finished Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, and have concluding thoughts on the strategy mashup. Having seen the entire game, they have lots of ideas for improvement of an already good game. Expect that sequel in 2019.

After the break we only had time for two emails. This week we look into the "correct" way to unload your old games, and we have a group therapy session to figure out which Sylvester Stallone role we'd each consider our "spirit animal." Our listerners are weird. You can send us completely insane questions via our inbox.

We're adding Rabbids to everything, and the results are nightmarish indeed.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45333/episode-537-the-worst-idea-in-a-strategy-game-since-conception-ii

We've escaped Isle Delfino, and return to our normal show this week. Greg and James are both still early in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Yes, Rabbids are objectively terrible, but this XCOM-inspired strategy crossover is a quite a bit of frustrating fun. Jon has a quick look at a pair of Housemarque games: Matterfall and Nex Machina, both on PS4. Nex Machina is of particular interest, as it borrows liberally from Robotron and Smash TV (including their designer) and could wind up on Switch one day. Guillaume wraps up New Business with a look at Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, liberated from his local library.

With some time to spare in the first segment, the team does a quick review of the Nindies event on Wednesday, and picks out some of the most interesting titles. No, but for real, Travis is back.

After the break, it's time for Listener Mail. This week we're asked: what's the next Rabbids crossover, when can we expect to see Mario and Sonic at the Olympics at the Olympics, what's holding back the video game equivalent of the "cinematic universe", and what it would take for Nintendo to prove to us that they're serious about online. You can write us questions that are obviously just things you want to hear us read out loud by sending us an email.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 536: Yoshi Facts Matter to Me
« on: August 27, 2017, 01:34:15 PM »

The most important fact is that Yoshi are water-soluble.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45229/episode-536-yoshi-facts-matter-to-me

Two days from the 15th anniversary of its US release, RFN hosted a live RetroActive for Super Mario Sunshine. Most of us toiled away at cleaning up Isle Delfino long enough to disrupt Bowser's bath, and we found that 15 years on we've got a lot to say. The game's place in history, its style, its controls, and even the horrific residents of Isle Delfino who deserve only fire are all hot topics of conversation. We don't just give our thoughts though, because nearly two hours of the show is devoted to listener call-ins. Among the guests is our esteemed former host, Dr. Jonathan Metts, who found time to call us from a drag race and defend his "perfect" review.

A big thank you to everyone who participated in this Retroactive! As always, it was a lot of fun. Except for the Chucksters.

I'm not denying that Sakurai will go down with the ship. I just don't want him to. I'm looking out for the guy!

I was really surprised they didn't get it after I mentioned the licensing. That hint COMPLETELY threw them and had them going down all sorts of dead-end roads. It was delicious.

We habitually say things that aren't true; sometimes we know it.

While planning this week's episode, we quickly determined that nobody had much New Business going on and the segment was doomed to be boring. A change was in order! While another mailbag-only episode may have been a perfectly acceptable solution, a revisiting of the 20 Questions format gives the show an extra dimension.

Four emails this week cover: how long Nintendo can wait to announce a Switch port of Smash Bros.; how Nintendo dodged the stink of Pokémon GO Fest; what other Nintendo games could be made into VR experiences; and what portable-only experiences are made possible by Switch. Between each email we play a round of 20 Questions. Coming into the episode we've successfully guessed all previous games. Do we manage to keep the streak going? You can send your 20 questions (or just one) to our inbox.

Some news this week: we're going to take next week off. It's been a while since our last vacation, and giving us a week apart will allow us to come back with a newfound appreciation for one another, full of the piss and vinegar you know and love. So far, our next RetroActive game, Super Mario Sunshine, has been doing a good job fueling us. To that end, we'll be recording our RetroActive on August 24, so get your comments in via the inbox or in the talkbalk thread.

Please reorient your life to Nintendo's schedule, lest we deny ourselves this transformative opportunity.

Splatoon 2 is out, but you know that since many of you are probably playing it as you listen to this. That said, there are other games to talk about, and this week Guillaume starts off New Business with Death Squared. The unexpected star of Gui's social calendar, the co-op puzzle game about exploding boxes turned out to be a surprise blast. Jon turns up the anime with Raiden V for Xbox One. This scrolling shooter mixes classic Raiden game play with absurd presentation; James is smitten. James, Greg, and Gui are all deep in Splatoon 2. A lot of the talk is about things the crew is surprised weren't changed in the sequel, and talk turns to the seemingly-unplayable Salmon Run. James is full of hot takes; feeling unfulfilled just recounting an...unfortunate stream, he also finds time to badmouth completely fictional characters for their vapidness. Truly, times have been tough on him.

After the break it's time for a couple of Listener Mail questions. First up the crew is asked to pick a game for a remake à la Metroid: Samus Returns. The crew rambles off a list of impossible suggestions, furtively searching for the one game that can prevent the unpreventable. Alas, history has already made it clear that they've created the circumstances that will lead to Super Mario Sunshine DX. The second email asks what Sony and Microsoft can learn from Nintendo. No, this isn't another multiverse question. You can ask us how to show cars at your stage show by sending us an email.

RetroActive has always been about summer-time fun. Prove me wrong. In that spirit, this time we're taking a look at Super Mario Sushine for the GameCube. We'll be having our feature conversation in mid-August, so get started and contribute your thoughts to our talkback thread so we can use them on the show.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 532: Not Caring Our Way to 134 Minutes

Greg will be portrayed as a CG tiger in the RFN Cinematic Universe.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/45038/episode-532-not-caring-our-way-to-134-minutes

After last week's abbreviated New Business, it should come as no surprise that this week we've got a veritable New Business Bonanza! Greg starts the show off with Nintendo's newest Squid/Kid simulator, Splatoon 2. While he was the only one who had the game as of our recording, Gui and James both spent time with the free Splatfest demo Nintendo ran last weekend. Who won the Cake v. Cake Splatfest? It doesn't matter; Pearl did nothing wrong. James is up next with a new addition to his home: an Xbox One S and its bundled games. He joins Jon and Greg on Team XBONE, discussing his adjustment to the system and offering thoughts on Anime Racing Simulator DX (a.k.a. Forza Motorsport 6). Meanwhile, Guillaume borrowed a physical copy of I Am Setsuna and discovered a better title might have been I Am Recycled Plot Ideas. He does turn the game's rather lackluster writing into a brief dramatic reading, so there's always that brightness in our lives. Jon wraps up New Business with his return to Eorzea with Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood. I always thought of him as a ranged DPS, and now he can be everyone's favorite Red Mage.

After the break we finally pay off our long-overdue RetroActive debt! We're pleased to announce that Super Mario Sunshine (GC) is the next entry in our long-suffering feature. Greg is already expressing reservations about the pachinko stages, and we're not even planning to do the RetroActive until mid-to-late August. That emotion you're already feeling is called resignation. Look for the comments thread to pop up in the NWR forums in the next couple of days.

We conclude the show with a serving of Listener Mail. Topics this week are: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for a new generation, the next "great" video game adaption, and the future of Punch-Out!! You can send us more depressing news about Mega Man via our inbox.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 531: Getting Down to Brass Max
« on: July 16, 2017, 08:53:00 AM »

Let me level with you, I need Jon to make sure that I don't make too many "Brass Balls" jokes in the episode titles. Yes, Jon is the guiding hand of maturity in terms of Brass Balls.

It's time for another inverted episode, so we start off this week with Listener Mail! In the first segment we tackle a trio of emails: the events of parallel universes in which Nintendo isn't the crazy console manufacturer, The Best Mario Game of 2018 (and why it's not Atelier Waluigi), and forecasting a Nintendo 64 Mini. What we've learned: if you send us an email positing parallel universes, you're riding without a seat belt.

After the break we ameliorate a paucity of New Business content by covering two more emails. We answer whether or not Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks rushed, and debate if Nintendo will ever feel comfortable making a touchscreen-focused Switch game. You can send us ideas for Bizarro Universes via the inbox.

We wrap the show up with A Little Bit of...New Business. Guillaume has an interesting duo, with thoughts on the 3DS remake of Dragon Quest VIII and a look at the multiplayer mode of The Adventures of Tintin (The Movie: The Game). Greg concludes the show with a pre-order update on the European special edition of Metroid: Samus Reloaded. As always, RFN is your source for pre-order news, previews, and reviews.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 530: The Missed Opportunities of BMX XXX

It's always best to give with an audience.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/44975/episode-530-the-missed-opportunities-of-bmx-xxx

We introduce a new feature to Radio Free Nintendo this week: Email Update! We start the show with some news on previous Listener Mail questions, in an effort to keep our audience abreast of all the goings on in Nintendo land. Stay tuned to see us forget to ever do this segment again.

Following these timely updates, it's New Business. James kicks it off with a look at recently-on sale Snake Pass for Switch. Often accused of being a snake, James finds that these past aspersions were highly inaccurate. Being a snake has never been more difficult. Jon has a very early look at the new Legend of Zelda: Breath of the DLC...DLC, The Master Trials. Jon also got to use this DLC to reflect on his past choices navigating Zelda. These aren't the choices needing self-reflection, but we're hopeful this will establish healthy habits. Guillaume has also been playing Zelda! He finished off Oracle of Ages and then moved onto Link to the Past. However, the real treasure of this segment is an oddly-placed riff on My Nintendo. Free Swapdoodle stationary now available. Greg polishes the brass...chin with ARMS. An update on his previous report from the competitive hand-flinging simulator, he's pretty convinced he's found his ceiling. I too have found my ceiling, trying to come up with another body part pun.

Following a short snippet of Perry Burkum music, it's time for Listener Mail. This week we cover: if the European SNES Mini is 50 or 60hz for unpatriotic Americans who want to defect from their home's SNES, circumnavigating our backlog like 16th Century explorers, and what will be left for Nintendo to publish in 2019. You to can give us a window to talk about Scores (NSFW) by sending us an email.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 529: Maslow's Hierarchy of Oasis Needs
« on: July 02, 2017, 12:29:36 PM »

This podcast can only achieve self-actualization by murdering thousands of squirrels for their teeth.

Our Moral Compass has returned; Guillaume is back from his expedition to slay the Loch Ness Monster. Made whole by his return, we let him kick-off New Business by catching us up on his recent 3DS experiences, most notably lost child simulator Rhythm Heaven Megamix and the third-best game with a Space Abraham Lincoln, Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. Jon drives us through the chaos of Rocket League - coming soon to Switch - and we U-Turn into a conversation about the role of cross-play for the game. James taps into his long experience diving into dungeons and building towns with Ever Oasis. All these inspirations are games he loves (Zelda, ActRaiser, Atelier, Recettear, etc.), but the game is too caught up in the micromanagement to ever rise above the sum of its parts. Greg closes out New Business with a look at fist-flinging fighter ARMS. Does ARMS have legs? I'm sorry...

After the break, it's time for Listener Mail. This week we spend way too much time talking about Sushi Striker: Way of the Sushido, and try to suss out the role of the Mini retro consoles in light of Nintendo's still-unexplained Virtual Console strategy on Switch. You can ask us facetious GotY questions and get uncomfortably serious answers by sending us an email.

Fans have held out hope that one of Rare's famous N64 characters would make its way to a Nintendo game. Who knew what they had in store...

E3 is over, and most of the RFN Crew has returned home. Gui is still out in the Scottish Highlands, seeking fame and fortune as the last Highlander. A "short" episode actually delivered, with a quick New Business and a bunch of Listener Mail.

Greg kicks us off with impressions of the Hey! Pikmin and Ever Oasis demos. After that, we're right into the mailbag. This week we answer questions about: buying stuff with our face on it, being terrible at games on camera, Capcom's Switch absence (in light of the Monster Hunter World announcement), and reminding our curious listeners that Retro's next game is Texas Brisket Challenge. You can defend the honor of various meats by sending us an email.

The word for this episode is "raucous."
