TalkBack / RE: Okami Coming to Wii
« on: October 20, 2007, 11:32:50 PM »
To the people who are saying all Capcom gives us is cheap ports with nothing better to follow. I have two words and a number for you.
MONSTER HUNTER 3. Ok so it's not big in America but it's one of THE big games in Japan.
It's no surprise that third-parties are a little cautious with the Wii given Nintendo's history but the sales charts speak for themselves. The Wii is the leading console. I guarantee you over the next year we're going to see many, MANY big third-party titles announced for the Wii.
Though there's nothing wrong with a good port of a great game, especially if they nail the Wii-mote controls.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Modified Wii Kiosks
« on: October 20, 2007, 10:36:22 PM »
Honestly I think the kiosks helped the Wii become such a success.
Half were unplayable and the other half required you to leave your key, credit card, wallet, and IMMORTAL SOUL with some druggie teenager behind the counter. The Wii was like this forbidden fruit of sorts and that fact that most weren't able to try it out made it that much more desirable.
Actually I think sales would slow down if more people got to play it before buying it. I mean the Wii is fun and all but not as fun as the people in the commercials seem to make it out to be. If more people had gotten to play that Excite Truck demo the kiosks shipped with I don't think the Wii would be quite as successful as it is now.

I think that, like Snake, Sonic was approved for Melee years ago but too late in the development to be added.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Demo Discs
« on: October 16, 2007, 03:27:56 AM »
Nintendo isn't as stubborn as people seem to think.

Sure Nintendo hasn't traditionally done demo discs but they haven't traditionally done online play either and look what's happening.
People who think Nintendo will never do demo discs = same people who were convinced Smash Bros Brawl would never go online.

Does that count? I mean it was an N64 launch title as promised, but the N64 itself was delayed SEVERAL times if I recall.

Personally I want them to take as long as it takes to make this game perfect.

However, maybe it just hasn't fully sunken in that the N64/GCN era is over, but the Wii losing such a huge holiday title does have me worried.
We still have Mario and several high profile third-party titles and the Wii is expected to sell out this Christmas regardless but . . . . what if it doesn't? The tides can change fast. after all.

TalkBack / RE: Sonic Confirmed for Smash Bros. Brawl
« on: October 10, 2007, 04:22:13 PM »
Pacman could appear in his traditional iconic form. Something like Mr Game and Watch.
Most of his attacks would of course be of the "lunge and bite" variety but he could also be given the ability to roll and maybe soar for a short time with the super cape in Super Man Pac. Maybe he could also have the ability to shoot pellets/fruit out of his mouth.
Of course as a final smash he could turn blue and become invincible and knock characters off the stage just by knocking into them. He could actually make for a very interesting and completely unique fighter IMO. Plus he'd no doubt have a very interesting retro stage to call his own.

I'm quite sure there WILL be one more third-party character. My bet is it will either be Pacman, Megaman, or possibly even something from Square/Enix.

I bet this means Ashley is a playable fighter.
I mean why else include her theme song?

She may not be one of the originals but she is one of the most popular of the Warioware gang and would have the most unqiue attacks.

TalkBack / RE: REVIEWS: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
« on: October 05, 2007, 09:20:04 PM »
I think the timed dungeon and the new controls will grow on people over time.
I mean a lot of people didn't take to Majora's Mask right away with its time limit and non-traditional storyline. Then there was the Wind Waker thing that needs no explanation. Also the Wii-mote controls in Twilight Princess. All three of these Zelda games featured deviations that were unsettling at first but MOST people eventually got used to them.
There are still a few people that think Majora's Mask was an unnessesary spin-off, hate cel-shaded Link, and prefer the Gamecube version of TP. But these people are the minority as far as I can tell.

The problem with writing reviews for newly released games is that you're pressured to finish them as fast as possible to get your review out in a respectable amount of time. That can taint the experience, especially with a unique title like this. The reviewer may blast through the title so fast, not giving himself time to become comfortable with the controls and enjoy the experience. Allowing moderately frustrating moments to become intolerable. Not giving the proper time to allow whatever pre-judgments he made on the game to fade.

Well, as of this moment, NWR's review has the distinction of being the harshest review of the game and well below the average score of 90% (9/10) which is only slightly below the average score of Majora's Mask (92%).

As for Canvas Curse. I actually think it's one of the best Kirby games.
It perfectly blended a new and solid control method with classic Kirby level design and gameplay.
Even if you removed Kirby and all the recognizable enemy sprites and sound effects, anyone who plays Kirby games would recognize the level design in an instant. This makes it a true Kirby game IMO.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The more I think about it...
« on: October 05, 2007, 01:54:12 AM »
I think context will make all the difference.

Seeing it in a quick and silent GIF image makes it seem pretty violent.

But I bet that 1) it will have a very goofy sound-effect and NOT bone snapping 2) Mario actually goes into the usual Smash Bros sleeping animation immediately after the move  (No, I don't suspect he gets up immediately, I assume this is Snake's answer to Jigglypuffs's lullaby). No one dies in Smash Bros, they get thrown off the stage, and even in stamina mode, they're clearly just passed out and breathing - and fun to play soccer with.

Very Sonic/Tails don't you think?
Actually, a more appropriate example would be Kirby's Super Star on the SNES.

It's a shame they're not doing 4P co-op but I imagine that would get too crowded.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The more I think about it...
« on: October 04, 2007, 01:03:10 AM »
Yeah, it kind of looks like he's sleeping peacefully after the attack too. It does suck to see what is practically a Sony mascot defeat MARIO but that will make it all the more fun to play the real game in a couple months and kick Snake's tight ass.

Besides, I think there's a good chance the move will be removed from the US version and I think it's almost certain the "naked Samus" bit will be.

This really must be a slow period in Japan if the PSP and Halo 3 are selling.

Oh noes. SO many words, it hurts my brain.

No, seriously, I completely agree. I think you're being a little hard on Sunshine and NSMB but I do suspect they will pale in comparison to Galaxy.
You could tell Miyamoto was upset with the somewhat luke-warm reception to Sunshine so he's putting a lot more care into this game to make sure it doesn't dissapoint.

Would we rather get a dumbed down port of the PS3 version? This is the Wii, not the Gamecube.

This is what Nintendo wanted. To get these kind of alternative, exclusive titles (and NOT ports) built around the Wii-mote.

Personally I won't miss SC4. The first two games were brilliant but the third was just more of the same and I doubt the fourth will offer anything more than the expected graphical update. Legends on the other hand could help lay the frame-work for a new generation of adventure titles.

« on: October 01, 2007, 04:11:33 AM »
It's nice that we're getting more Nintendo produced titles and the most-requested third-party titles for a change, but does this mean that developers are losing interest in releasing their old games on the VC? Lately it seems like we're not getting as many of the somewhat mediocre, low fan-fare third-party titles that the VC was getting its first nine months out the gate. Some would say this is a good sign but will this keep the VC from growing to be the massive collection it was envisioned as? Will support eventually dry up completely?

Ness and Lucas are the Ryu and Ken of Smash Bros.
Personally I have no problem with clones if it means a HUGE roster.
I mean would you rather have 30 entirely unique characters or 30 entirely unique characters with 20 clones thrown in to make it 50.

The PSP's sales boost is a combination of it finally having a must-have game for the Japanese audience combined with the fact that barely anyone has one compared to nearly everyone owning a DS.
But as soon as the FF hype dies down, things will be back to normal.

TalkBack / RE: Retro: Dread Reference in Prime 3 a 'Coincidence'
« on: September 27, 2007, 09:37:14 PM »
Anyone recall when rumors of a DS revision surfaced and Nintendo flat-out denied there was a new DS coming, and like a MONTH LATER revealed the DS LITE.
Or the rumors of Rare's departure that Nintendo officially denied until the DAY IT HAPPENED. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, Iwata himself said it wasn't happening THE DAY BEFORE it was officially announced by MS.

Basically, as far as Nintendo is concerned, if it's not officially announced it doesn't exist yet and they'll deny it to the very end.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Amazing On-Rails!! Raving Rabbids 2
« on: September 27, 2007, 12:19:46 AM »
I think it looks fun. Much better than the on-rails stages in the original.
Of course, doubters must keep in mind that this is a collection of games, and these levels are only going to be a small percentage of them. So if they don't do it for you, you still have that Guitar Hero spoof mini-game and many others.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The OFFICIAL Wii rumor thread (updated 09/23/2007)
« on: September 26, 2007, 01:46:21 AM »
I could see it happening. Sony is still MS's real enemy as they're competing for the traditional market with similar consoles. The Wii, on the other hand, is in a whole other universe. Almost as much so as the DS which MS had no problem with Rare developing for. Besides, MS just cares about making money, and if it thinks a quick port of Viva on the Wii will actually earn it some profit from the bad deal it made so many years ago when it paid a mint for Rare, it will happen.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: It's nearly a year later, and...
« on: September 26, 2007, 12:27:57 AM »
Right now he may be focusing on MGS4 on PS3, but I'm quite certain his future projects will be Wii bound.
The PS3 is a bomb with, at best, the potential to be the Gamecube of this generation IF IT'S LUCKY. Then there's 360 which is non-existant in Japan, which makes it an unlikely choice for a developer like Kojima who seems very loyal to the gamers of his homeland. It will probably get a MGS4 port, but after that, I suspect Kojima will focus on more original projects that will be a better fit on the Wii. Unless MGS4 somehow miraculously makes a profit, I doubt Konami will even want there to be a MGS5.
MGS4 may have been his cash-cow for some years but titles like Boktai and Lunar Knights prove Kojima has a very Miyamoto-like interest in developing more unique titles. I'm sure he's looking forward to bring something like that to the Wii.
