Nintendo Gaming / RE: Modded Wii DVD playback
« on: August 30, 2007, 04:43:27 PM »
This "new format" thing is crap. Whichever one wins, neither Blue-Ray nor HD-DVD will become the new standard replacing DVDs. They'll simply find a place with a small niche market of tech-nerds who are willing to put several thousands of dollars into their entertainment centers.
DVD will remain the standard for a few years to come until eventually they're replaced with digital distribution. Much as CDs have been replaced with MP3s.
It's just a matter of allowing the technology to evolve to the point of making it accessible to the mainstream.

This is why the PS3 is doing so poorly and the 360 is doing ok but still being outsold by past-generation hardware.
Sony and MS made the mistake of making consoles for the small but deceptively LOUD minority of internet tech-geeks while Nintendo made a console for EVERYONE else.

"I see it differently. I think Wii Fit will be HUGE in America... but once buying it, people won't actually use it much as they are too lazy."

I can't believe I didn't realize it sooner. THIS is why Nintendo delayed Wii Fit.
Around the holidays Americans get fat then come New Years they all make those resolutions to get in shape. That's why gyms get so many new members at the start of the year. If Nintendo releases Wii Fit in the first quarter it can capitalize on this phenomenon. This may be the only "game" ever that could be more successful if released in the usually dead first quarter than it would be if released in the holiday season when we're all stuffing our faces with turkey and cookies and making coat racks out of those old exercise bikes we bought last January.

Still I wish Nintendo had SOMETHING for the non-gamers this year. I mean how hard would it have been to throw together a Wii Play 2 if nothing else.

"Wii Fit will sell more hardware than Halo 3."

I could see it happening but I can't help but wonder when a Wii Sports 2, which could be an even bigger seller, is coming out.
I thought for sure Nintendo was going to throw it together in a year's time to make it the big non-gamer AAA title of this holiday season.
With Wii Fit supposedly delayed to next year, it seems like Nintendo's holiday line-up is almost STRICTLY for real gamers.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Metroid Prime 3 Revolutionized
« on: August 25, 2007, 03:53:01 PM »
I think Wii owners under-estimate the Metroid Prime 3 commercial and all of Nintendo's Wii advertising in general.
I mean WE know what the Wii does. It's nothing special to us having logged countless hours with it.
But to people who have never touched a Wii-mote before, these commercials must be very appealing.
I mean let's face it, the Wii hasn't sold out every month since launch because it's had a constant stream of great games since then. It's selling because it's so new and different. It's important that the commercials continue to highlight that.

MP3 might not beat Halo 3 in overall sales, but I bet it's going to appeal to a wider audience by winning over people who would never dream of touching a title like Halo 3 or any traditional FPS,

It will be interesting to see if Nintendo ever officially makes good on their promise of DVD movie support.
Tt was originally suppose to be a given feature, then it was said to require some extra piece of equipment to be sold separately, and after launch they made mention of it eventually being a feature.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Assist Trophy Discussion and Speculation
« on: August 19, 2007, 03:02:42 PM »
I'd personally rather the Metroid be an item over an assist trophy. The Metroid could first appear in a containment unit so you can pick it up and toss it an opponent causing it to break free and latch onto them for a short time.

People just assume NP is biased because it's from Nintendo.
But if you compare the scores with other sites, NP is FAR from the most generous towards Nintendo's own games.
They even gave Eternal Darkness one of the WORST scores of any site or publication.

Yeah I think an official "movie" channel is on the way. Nintendo has commented several times in the past about the Wii eventually having DVD capabilities. Most speculated this meant a new model but I think this is more likely.
They just didn't want to risk the DVD features getting in the way of the first-year game sales.

Ok about the Metroid Channel. Worked fine the first day but now the videos will play for maybe five seconds at a time in between several minutes of buffering. My internet connection is fine, I checked. Is my Wii broken or is Nintendo's online setup just really THAT bad.

Notice two of the most hilariously inappropriate screenshots ever. One where it appears that Peach is offering up Toad as tasty sacrifice to Bowser and I don't even know what the one with her and Mario looks like ... but it definitely doesn't look . . . right.

"What's that image of DK from? The one with the boxing glove? And what's he holding in his other hand?"

Good question. It's the only graphic I DON'T recognize.
I'm thinking it has to be from DK64 which is the only game I recall Donkey putting on boxing gloves in. But that wasn't until the very, VERY last boss.
So I don't see why there'd be promotional art for it.

Edit: Aww, now I feel dumb. The ONE Mario sports title I haven't played lol.

It would be cool if you could actually place the stickers on your fighter.
Still, this may be a great way to add some serious nostalgia with relatively little extra dev time.
I mean the appeal of the trophies in Melee was just being reminded of all these obscure characters.
Making 3D models of them all seemed kind of like a waste.  I mean who REALLY looked at more than a few of them them for all that long and from different angles?  Hopefully like the trophies, the stickers will come with a little bit of basic information as well.
I think there will be collectible trophies as well but just the assist trophies this time.

Also the appearance of the Big Brain professor makes it pretty clear Sakurai isn't ignoring the "new" Nintendo in favor of the classic Nintendo.
This makes it even more likely we'll see a customizable Mii as a fighter. Maybe even a Wii Sports themed stage. I bet we'll get some kind of funky Brain Age assist trophy as well. Maybe a big floating head?

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Shiggy speaks about Casual and Hardcore games
« on: August 13, 2007, 10:25:11 PM »
It's all relative. I guarantee you if you gave someone who never played video games in their life Super Mario Bros and then Super Mario Sunshine they would say the former is easier than the latter.
Sure Super Mario Sunshine seems MUCH easier to most of us now but we've been gaming with Mario for two decades.
Also a lot of NES games were more difficult for no other reason than because save files weren't common at the time. I don't consider that true difficulty as much as a technical restraint.

As for the hardcore vs casual debate.
I'd say Nintendo is doing an excellent job of balancing them out so far.
We've got titles like Wii Sports, Wii Play, and Big Brain that appeal to the very casual and so called "non-gamers".
Then titles like Twilight Princess and the soon to come Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, and Brawl for the hardcore.
Then there are titles like Mario Party 8 and Warioware Smooth Moves falling somewhere in between.

People can preach doom and gloom about Nintendo possibly shifting things too much in one direction or the other next year but you have to give them credit for getting it pretty damn right so far.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Perchance Sonic, the Hedge-Hog?

This might be happening. I dismissed the EB games fiasco as BS. Just some over-zealous employee who went too far with photoshop.
But an actual professional flier, even if it is Canadian, is far more convincing.
It's very common for retailers to slip up and advertise things that haven't been officially revealed.
I mean listings for a RE4:Wii Edition popped up weeks before the game was officially announced or shown off.

Only thing that gives me doubt is the Sonic model in the advertising is reused from a past Sonic title while the other models  are originals created for the actual game.

I'm sure some would argue that Nintendo needs to advertise more to people that DON'T have a Wii yet than those who already do, but this is still a very positive sign. Hopefully Nintendo will send out a memo to game stores to update their Wii display with the new demo as well.

Remember that little promo vid Nintendo had at last year's E3 with the punk kid playing MP3 and dodging virtual blasters and doing a morph ball impression. I know it was pretty much universally mocked but I thought it was funny and wouldn't mind seeing the real commercial being similar.

All the Gamecube launch titles and games the first six months after launch had that uniform/uninspired look too.
But they eventually moved on to more original commercials. If I'm not mistaken the controversial Mario Sunshine ad was the first of them.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Metroid Prime 3 Revolutionized

Nintendo has traditionally almost NEVER advertised games in advance. Even the Wii wasn't advertised weeks in advance and I do recall idiots claiming the thing would bomb because Nintendo wasn't hyping it at all. But soon as it came out Nintendo began one of its biggest ad campaigns ever and we all know it didn't bomb.
Sure Smash Bros has the website thing but it seems to be more of a hobby on the developer's part than anything else and let's not forgot that Smash Bros was not playable or even shown at E3 while Metroid Prime 3 was and got a very positive reaction.
As for Halo 3. Unlike MS, Nintendo doesn't have to hype up ONE game like it's all they've got because honestly as great as Metroid will be it's just one of several HUGE games it has coming out this Fall.

Nintendo already has huge cut-outs of Samus in game stores all across America which is something most other Wii games DIDN'T have this long in advance. But the best hype is the type that ironically comes from sites like IGN. It and every other respectable gaming site/publication has been raving about the game and its controls ever since it was revealed. Now that IGN thinks Nintendo isn't doing its part to hype the game, it creates a FRONT PAGE article all about it. It may be somewhat anti-Nintendo in tone but it's actually doing Nintendo more of a favor than anything else.

But if/when Nintendo releases some brilliant commercial that will be airing around the clock the week of the game's release, Matt will have to eat his foot.

Well it's good to know Nintendo is still actually thinking about the Wii interface at all.
Now where is our new channel? That's sad when even the goofy "rate Mii"channel spoke of FOREVER ago is still not a reality. How long can it possibly take Nintendo to develop these things?

We'll have to wait and see how Dewy does in the US where Elebits had a surprisingly strong following.

But I mean, they can't ALL be winners.
Elebits was proof an original IP can be a success on the Wii, but maybe Dewy is just a little too screwy for any kind of mass appeal.

TalkBack / RE: New Smash Bros. Details Revealed
« on: August 04, 2007, 06:48:58 AM »
I think the fighters in Brawl are meant to be more like living trophy incarnations of the gaming icons more so than the actual characters.
So whether they're good guys, bad guys or whatever in their respected games really makes no difference.
I mean the new video does show the good guys teaming up to fight the approaching baddies but you'll likely be able to select a team consisting of all bad guys or even a mix of good and bad in their place.
Metaknight's ship being the vehicle of this new enemy is odd but I'm assuming they've simply stolen in. They're probably also in control of the classic enemies like the Hammer Bros that appear in the adventure mode. Basically Smash Bros has always had a vague story involving the MASTER HAND (which may represent a human collector or possibly some God-like being) manipulating the fighters which are portrayed originally as dolls and then as trophies in the first sequel. The purple guys (who may be an evolution of the fighting polygon team) are likely its minions who are here to keep the trophies from rising up and once again laying the smash down on the omnipotent hand.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo won't be attending TGS 2007
« on: July 31, 2007, 08:46:15 AM »
Face it, Nintendo is notorious for being a control freak.
With E3 no longer what it once was and Spaceworld unlikely to return, I think the days of Nintendo unveiling games and making announcements at shows are coming to an end. Basically, like P666 says, it will probably be all press-releases and SSBB-style online reveals from here on. Personally I'm fine with that. Instead of waiting all year for one big show that people over-hype to oblivion and pretty much guarantee disappointments, we'll get completely unexpected reveals on random days whenever Nintendo damn well feels like it.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendo won't be attending TGS 2007

Nintendo is probably better off letting third-party Wii games get the attention. The Wii is the first Nintendo console in a decade that has a shot at some SERIOUS third-party support after all.
I think we'll be pleasantly surprised too. With the Wii leading sales in every market and pretty much dominating Japan alongside the DS, a lot of Japanese third-parties that were weary at first likely have high-profile Wii games in development by now that will be ready for unveiling at the TGS.

As for Nintendo's first party offerings. I think it's likely that from here on they will release screens and vids on their own terms. More like the Smash Bros situation. But who knows they just may shock us and announce the return of Spaceworld. Anything is possible.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:ign gave mari ostrikers an...
« on: July 28, 2007, 04:43:56 AM »
As much praise and as few complaints as the actual text of the review dishes out, the score SHOULD be higher IMO.
I mean I understand that Matt is trying to be a respectable reviewer and save the REALLY AMAZING scores for games that will truly deserve them like Mario Galaxy and Brawl likely will.
But the problem is other reviewers on IGN and gaming sites all over give a higher score to games that are quite mediocre.
So when a great game like Mario Strikers gets the same review as some mediocre game in another review, it looks REALLY BAD.

I say there's no room for fair reviews in gaming. Matt should just suck it up and give the game a 9 or even 9.5. He can save the 10 for Metroid.

If Matt wants to be the rebel and take a stand against over-zealous reviewers who pan out crazy high scores to game after game,  he should just stop scoring entirely and force people to actually READ his review.
