I mostly agree with you there.
I don't think Adventures is that great of a game. But it is definately a good solid title. Just nothing I plan on playing 20 times. I've beaten it twice and that'll do. But I totally agree that the "collectathon" argument is a little lame. That's just what you DO in certain games. Especially Rare games. But then again I liked DK 64 a LOT so what do I know?
SFAdventures had great graphics and sound, the gameplay was tight and fluid (although I could've used a few more offensive moves with my staff) the level designs were nothing great overall. But a few of the worlds had some really interestingly put together areas. Some of which actually made you have to think in order to solve a puzzle. Overall though, the puzzle solving was light and the enemies were weak. Even the bosses.
But as far as fun games go, this one is right up there. I think anyone who wants a good game for a one time run through, SFAdventures is your game.
