Nintendo Gaming / Re: Wii don't need a hard drive.
« on: May 08, 2008, 04:37:03 PM »
When the Wii first came out, 2GB Kingston SD cards were $20, at Newegg.

Yep, and I paid $19.99 for a 2GB SanDisk SD card at Best Buy in November 2006, solely for use in my Wii.

It will be necessary for Wii 2 to have a hard drive.

Who cares about the "Wii 2"? It's necessary for the current Wii to have a hard drive!

The title of this thread is wrong. It should be Nintendo don't need to produce a hard drive

I just found this. 500GB for £75. All Nintendo need to do is produce a generic driver to support them all, and the problem is sorted. No R&D involved, no mass production or marketing. All the pennies they would have spent making one have been saved! All by using a product that already exists.

When the Wii was first unveiled, Iwata said that the Wii would support just about any USB Hard Drive. It's time he made good on that claim.

Hard Drive = easy. Swapping files around on SD cards = pain in the neck.

Amen.

Now, I would be content with copying to an SD card if the Wii could access Channels saved on that SD card. For all intents and purposes the SD card slot is a rather useless feature of the Wii since, many times, it takes longer to copy a Virtual Console "Channel" to the SD card than it does to download it from the Shop Channel!

"Wii don't need a hard drive", huh?

I guess you didn't have to free up space this morning just to install the Nintendo Channel.

I currently have 12 VC games stored on an SD card because the Wii's "generous 512MB of flash RAM" became pathetically small about 3 or 4 months ago.

See how it plays when you throw the wheel INTO THE AIR.

I don't use Nintendo's "Wii Wheel". It's either the Classic Controller or the Core Gamer Wii Multi-Axis Racing System

Wow is that a good wheel?

I love it. The "Wii Wheel" is useless to me, since it isn't attached to a base. This wheel offers a bit of resistance when turning and returns to "zero" position. There are mixed reviews on GameStop's site though. Apparently these things break easily (the springs break) and it's widespread. My first one broke after about 5 minutes of gameplay. I had bought one for my friend and his held up after several hours of continuous use. My 2nd one seems to be fine, too.

Personally, I think it's the best console Mario Kart, to date.

Ya know Rhoq, i was actually thinking about starting a thread a few weeks ago after i finished Apollo Justice wondering if you guys all thought a Wii version of the pheonix wright games would work.

should it keep the first person perspective?
if so should it be free-roaming 3D or 2D point & click via the wiimote? etc, etc..

I thought for sure that after reading about the 'Harvey Birdman' game that came out a few months ago that it was just a matter time before Phoenix Wright found himself on the Wii.

I wouldn't care whether it was 2D or 3D (or hell a 2.5D Viewtiful Joe-esque brawler, LOL). Whether it featured the same type of choice-based gameplay/movement or if it were a "point & click". I just want to see the series make the transition to the Wii. Hopefully Capcom will see that Atlus has had success with the Wii installments of the 'Trauma Center' series and consider bringing Phoenix Wright & co. over to the DS' big brother.

I still need to buy Ace Attorney 3 & 4 (Trials & Tribulations and Apollo Justice). This new game sounds interesting, but where the hell is my Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Wii Edition?

Bases Loaded - 'Nuff said.

(Yoshi's Cookie, too)

Both NES games are 500 points.

I borrowed it from a friend. The next day I was already a bit more than halfway through the game (after only about 3 or 4 hours of combined play time) and just couldn't take it any more. It was one of the most mundane and repetitive experiences I've ever had playing a game. I took it out of my 360 at that point and continued on with Bully.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Obscure II The Aftermath.

The game looks interesting. IGN gave it a 7.0 as well, but "Another Take" by Cassamassina seems to indicate the reviewer (Ryan Clements) gave it a higher score and he (Matt) lowered it before publishing the review.

"Another Take
from Matt Casamassina
I think Ryan liked the game a little more than I did, which is why we've lowered the overall score for the Wii version, even if it is better than the PS2 build. Fact is, much of the Wii's features are underused in Obscure, whether you're talking about 480p and 16:9 support or, more importantly, clever Wii remote-mapped gameplay mechanics. For $29.99, Obscure remains a respectable survival-horror alternative with some really campy moments. But it also feels like a survival horror game designed a decade ago -- same fundamental shortcomings as some of the originals, from a wonky camera to a story which makes little sense. If you're dying for a scare -- har, har -- give it a try. The price is certainly right."

Great news. Now maybe Nintendo can take a portion of the $70 Million they've made through SSBB sales and fix it's broken on-line!

I just checked my status on their website and it looks like my replacement disc was mailed out yesterday. Hopefully I'll have by the middle of next week.

I don't believe saving is an option there?

I always play it to the end when I do it... so I've never tried.

I didn't think there was, but I wanted to be sure that I wasn't somehow missing the option or that it wasn't saving automatically.

Has anyone been able to save in "Classic" mode? I always have to start at the first level each time I play.

I had to send my Wii to Nintendo to have the drive replaced a few months ago. I had it back in a week. They will send you an e-mail with a link to print a pre-paid FedEx shipping label. The free FedEx "medium" sized box is perfect for the Wii (which will need to be placed inside of a plastic bag along with a letter containing all of the info that they request of you). Ball-up some newspaper for packing material and you're set.

BTW - I found that a large-sized freeer bag (Ziploc) is the perfect size to place the Wii in for shipping.

Am I the only nerd that's too riddled with grade school-induced neuroses to pick up this game?

Ah, but you can turn the tables and fight back in this game! Plus you can go around harassing and beating innocent students.

Anyone pick this up? I hear the 360 version locks up frequently

I got it for the 360. Luckily I haven't experienced any lock-ups (i played through the "Halloween" missions yesterday, which seem to be an area of trouble for a lot of people and made it through without any freezes. BUT - there are plenty of audio drop-outs, framerate dips and stuttering. I hear the Wii version runs smoothly and glitch-free. If I had known that before opening the game, I would have taken it back to the store and exchanged it for the Wii version. I've trained myself to save frequently (every time I finish a mission), just in case.

How are the Wii controls?

Impressions and review plz

While I can't comment on the Wii version specifically (obviously), I will say that this game is very entertaining. The dialog is well written and most of the missions are quite fun. If you had never played Bully on the PS2 like me, I'd say it's definitely worth checking-out.

Well we did get a DVD case for WiiPlay, so there is a glimmer of hope they do the right thing with Mario Kart.

So looking at the packaging and realizing that Mario Kart Wii will ship in a box along with the "Wii Wheel" is anyone else concerned that Nintendo might go the cheap route and give us a cardboard "wallet" (Wii Sports, Link's Crossbow Training) for the game instead of an actual DVD-sized case?

You know, I was lurking the GAF the other day and for some reason there seemed to be a lot of talk about the 360 being a "failure" and 2008 being the "Year Of The PS3".  Did I miss some industry shifting events or just fall into another dimension?  :-\

When Warner decided to go Blu-ray exclusive as of June 1, 2008 - it had a domino effect on HD DVD. All of the bad news and FUD spread by the media against HD DVD has pushed a lot of people to go "blu". Since the stand alone players have not yet achieved full spec (Profile 2.0) and none of the current models, except for the PS3 can be upgraded - many people (including myself) opted to purchase a PlayStation 3. This combined with the belief that many, quality, PS3-exclusive games are set to be released this year has caused the mass hysteria over at the GAF that you are referring to.
