TalkBack / Miyamoto's NYC Visit a Success
« on: September 27, 2005, 01:52:33 PM »
Nintendo's official report details the game designer's visit to the Nintendo World Store in support of Nintendogs-mania.

Hard-Core Nintendo Fans Wait Two Days as Nintendogs Takes on New York

Miyamoto Visits Nintendo World Store, Unlocks Secret Breed

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- This weekend Nintendo hosted two   major Nintendogs(TM) events in New York. On Sunday, some 1,500 people lined   up at the Nintendo World Store in Rockefeller Center to meet legendary   Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Dedicated fans staked out the   first spots in line as early as 2:30 a.m. Friday -- more than two days   before the event began. Some came specifically for the event from as far   away as France, Canada and South Carolina, and eventually the line wrapped   around several city blocks.

Miyamoto signed T-shirts, current and classic video games and consoles   ranging from the original Nintendo Entertainment System® to Nintendo   GameCube(TM). While only the first 200 people were guaranteed a meeting with   Miyamoto, hundreds of others received a special gift from him as he unlocked   the secret Jack Russell terrier breed in Nintendogs and shared his trainer   information. The special feature moved from person to person through the   line via the wireless abilities of the Nintendo DS(TM). Owners also were   able to share a special voice message from Napoleon Dynamite actress Haylie   Duff.

On Saturday, a dozen real-life pooches changed the catwalk into a dogwalk as   they showcased the latest in puppywear in the Nintendogs Doggy Fashion Show   in Riverside Park. The clothes were the creations of Little Lilly, designer   to the stars' dogs. A few of the dogs were available for adoption through   the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which   received dozens of adoption inquiries and multiple donations.

"It's no secret that Nintendo has the best, most loyal fans in the world,"   said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of   sales & marketing, who also met with fans at both events. "These events   demonstrated that Nintendogs has huge momentum to carry it through the   holidays."

The smash-hit Nintendogs already has sold more than 1.5 million units   worldwide. Nintendogs, made exclusively for Nintendo DS, went on sale in the   United States on Aug. 22 and became an instant sensation. The week of Sept.   5, Nintendogs even was the subject of a weeklong plotline in the popular   syndicated comic strip "FoxTrot." Retailers nationwide are reporting   shortages, although Nintendo ensures new puppy litters are on their way.

Consumers who don't live in the New York area will get a chance to receive   the special Haylie Duff message and virtual gift at events in the future.   For details, along with downloads, video diaries and fun Nintendogs extras,   visit www.nintendogs.com.

If you're worried about legal problems of copyright, despite the changes we've made to the contest rules, then the only safe thing to do is to abstain from the contest or submit only ideas that you have no intention of ever forming into a real game.  I don't think we can make the rules language any clearer or more protective without paying a lawyer to edit it.

The submission, as in what you write, becomes property of PGC...not the concept itself.  We're not a development firm, so we have no interest in the actual concepts.  We'll clarify the wording there.

This contest is open to PGC readers around the world.  I've asked Karl to update the article to that effect.

TalkBack / Jim Merrick Revolution Controller Interview
« on: September 16, 2005, 08:03:30 AM »
The Nintendo Europe executive gives new details about the controller's development and potential, and he explains how we'll be able to play multiplatform games.

In an interview with Eurogamer (link above), Jim Merrick, Senior Director of Marketing for Nintendo Europe, talks in depth about the newly revealed Revolution controller.  Some of his comments include brand new information.  Here are a few samples:

Eurogamer: So how long has the controller been in development?

Jim Merrick:
It's a difficult thing to pin down. I mean, two years ago, Iwata was talking about making a fundamental change in the marketplace and reaching new audiences. And of course, the minute we finished work on the Gamecube, we were thinking, 'Where do we go from here?'

I really started seeing references maybe a year ago - the developers started to get information, and then prototypes, and now they're working with what you saw today.

Eurogamer: So when will we get to play [the games], exactly?

Jim Merrick:
Put it this way. Without making a commitment, if I went to E3 2006 and didn't end up playing the Revolution, I'd be very disappointed...

Eurogamer: How is the controller going to work with games that aren't designed specifically for the Revolution - multi-platform titles and so on?

Jim Merrick:
We're producing a classic-style expansion controller, based on traditional designs like the Gamecube controller. It's like a shell with a hole in the top into which you slot the freehand-style controller, and then you can play third-party ported games, and retro Nintendo games you've downloaded.

So there's that option - but even while it's inserted into the classic-style shell, the freehand controller will still be able to sense positioning and so on, so there are more options too.

There's a lot more where that came from, so be sure to read the entire interview at Eurogamer!

TalkBack / Tiger Woods 06 Gone Gold
« on: September 08, 2005, 03:49:17 PM »
His newest game is almost out.

Tiger woods PGA tour 06 goes gold

Electronic Arts is pleased to announce that Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06 has gone gold. The newest iteration of the best-selling golf franchise—releasing on the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, Xbox® video game system, Nintendo GameCube™, and PC—will hit stores on September 22 under the EA SPORTS brand. Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06 will be released for the PlayStation portable on September 26.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06 offers all new gameplay challenges with the introduction of the dual analog swing.* Both analog sticks are used to give players more control than ever.  Players will need to think more strategically before executing their shots and focus on the impact point on the ball.   A new putting mechanic also provides the opportunity for players to rely on finesse and move the analog stick only as far as needed to make the putt.

Another exciting addition is the all-new Rivals mode in which players get the chance to earn and defend the title of #1 Golfer of All Time. After creating a detailed golf character in GameFace, players follow Tiger Woods’ path through time in an attempt to best both Tiger’s accomplishments and the accomplishments of elite golfers from each era. Legends such as Old Tom Morris, Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus stand in the way as you attempt to become the greatest golfer ever.

Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06 features 12 licensed courses including Pasatiempo Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, and Reflection Bay Golf Club, plus three new fantasy courses including New York’s Central Park. Sixteen PGA TOUR players hit the links including Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, and for the first time, Mike Weir, Chris DiMarco, Ian Poulter, and Luke Donald.

TalkBack / News Corp Announces Purchase of IGN
« on: September 08, 2005, 05:21:35 AM »
Nintendo WiFi Connection is brought to you by GameSpy, Rupert Murdoch, and the letter Q.

In the latest gaming media acquisition, the Associated Press is reporting that News Corp intends to purchase IGN Entertainment for $650 million.  Last year, IGN swallowed GameSpy Networks, and Nintendo recently announced that the upcoming Nintendo WiFi Connection service will use technology from IGN's GameSpy division, similar to the GameSpy matching service for online PC games.

News Corp is a media conglomerate run by Australian businessman Rupert Murdoch, who has openly expressed an interest in entering the video game industry.  News Corp already owns Fox Interactive, a game division known for such titles as No One Lives Forever.  Fox Interactive currently licenses all of its games over to Vivendi Universal Games, which publishes them under its own labels such as Sierra Entertainment.  Some of these games have been released on Nintendo systems, including games based on The Simpsons and Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series.

This deal will probably not directly affect the relationship between Nintendo and GameSpy, but we'll let you know if it anything changes.

Thanks to Josh Hogan for the tip!

TalkBack / Super Monkey Ball Rolls onto DS
« on: September 07, 2005, 08:28:56 AM »
The new issue of Famitsu reveals a touch-controlled sequel to Sega's popular series.

We've seen the future of Super Monkey Ball, and it's on the Nintendo DS.  The latest issue of Famitsu Weekly in Japan has the first information and screenshots of Super Monkey Ball DS.

The game displays a fully polygonal engine on the top screen, with a 2D representation of your character on the touch screen.  As with Namco's Pac 'N Roll, this game is controlled by sliding the stylus across the touch screen to simulate rolling the ball in any direction.  One key difference with Pac 'N Roll is that Super Monkey Ball DS shows the action from behind your monkey, just like in the console games.

Famitsu's screenshots also show off some of the mini-games, including a version of the race mode and a new air hockey game that looks similar to Nintendo's air hockey demo from E3 2004.  The mini-games will support wireless multiplayer, of course, but we're still checking on whether the article confirms online WiFi support as well.

Super Monkey Ball DS is scheduled for a December release in Japan.

TalkBack / DMB Headlines Tiger Trax
« on: September 06, 2005, 05:22:59 AM »
This year's Tiger Woods golf game will feature "Stand Up" from the recent Dave Matthews Band album.

Dave Matthews Band Headlines In-Game Music Soundtrack of EA's Tiger Woods PGA Tour(R) 06

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 6, 2005--Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS) today announced that 'Stand Up (For It)' from the Grammy-winning multi-platinum rock group, Dave Matthews Band, will headline the in-game music soundtrack of Tiger Woods PGA TOUR(R) 06. The soundtrack is complemented by smooth electronic tracks from The Supreme Beings of Leisure, Thievery Corp and David Holmes, which are designed to enhance the musical atmosphere on the green.

"This is the first time we've had a song in a videogame, but it seems appropriate because we're all fans of Tiger and EA SPORTS. So it feels natural that, if we were going to end up in a video game, it would be next to him. When we were recording 'Stand Up' in the studio, everyone had this reaction that it reminded them of sports. So I think it was the only song that would really be right for the game," said Dave Matthews.

"I've been a huge fan of the Tiger Woods PGA TOUR game for years. Playing the game is a nice way to wind down after a concert... when we're riding on the bus, I'll play it instead of watching TV. Playing the video game version of golf puts me in the game when I can't actually get to the golf course," said Stefan Lassard, bassist for Dave Matthews Band.

"The sound of golf is not an easy one to define, but with Dave Matthews Band, we've found the perfect anthem for Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06," said Steve Schnur, Worldwide Executive of Music and Music Marketing at EA. "In this year's game, we are delivering a score that helps bring the player deeper into the experience."

The Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06 in-game music soundtrack is a part of the EA SPORTS(TM) TRAX music initiative that EA debuted in 2001. The program is dedicated to bringing gamers the hottest music through EA's videogames.

In Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06, gamers will attempt to settle the old debate of just who is the #1 Golfer of All Time. They'll play golf legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Ben Hogan on their terms and in their specific eras (equipment, clothing and all). However, Tiger Woods is also there and is after the same goal. It's your job to find him, stop him, and ultimately supplant him as the #1 golfer of every era. Duel with Tiger in multiple matches as he becomes your nemesis, chasing and even taunting you in every tournament.

Developed by EA Redwood Shores, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 06 will be available for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system, Xbox(R) video game system from Microsoft and Nintendo GameCube(TM) in September 2005. The game is rated "E" for Everyone by the ESRB. Learn more about the game at: www.tigerwoods06.com.

TalkBack / RE: Resident Evil to Nintendo DS!
« on: August 24, 2005, 01:06:46 PM »
They should make an original game instead of another remake.  I think one reason Capcom keeps remaking RE is that they're afraid to tamper too much with the storyline, which many RE fans take WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too seriously.
