TalkBack / Re: Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Review
« on: October 20, 2010, 05:47:25 PM »
It's clear from all the reviews that Spidey 2099 needs his own game, and eventually, a movie. Thus would my pre-teen fantasies be fully realized.

anand:

1) That's circuitous logic. Why would you try to get all melons unless you already knew it was the "right" way to play? My point was simply that the game is opaque, a point that someone earlier in the thread made as well.

3) It is quite possible that the specific feel of the game's controls was intentional. But I don't care, because the end result doesn't feel good when I play it. It's frustrating to complete even simple jumps, and it was a major turn-off for me.

Fantastic tagline for this review. I am frankly scared of Etrian Odyssey, not only for the difficulty but also the danger that I could get addicted to it.

TalkBack / Re: Disc-Free Netflix Now Available on Wii<br>
« on: October 18, 2010, 01:54:50 PM »
I was wondering if Nintendo would take advantage of this situation, but I honestly thought the application might be too large (> 40MB) to run natively on Wii. So, this is a nice surprise. It's not very relevant for me since I have all three consoles and will probably default to PS3 now (it has better video and audio, and I already watch a lot of disc movies on PS3). However, I know that a lot of people do watch Netflix on Wii, and this should be a boon to them.

TheFleece, you can search with the new disc-less Wii app. At this point, all three consoles have a search function for Netflix (although the Xbox updated app is only available to NXE Preview users until November).

Sweet, can't wait to hear about Shantae. Day 1 purchase on 3DS.

Okay, I'm convinced. Good Feel should make the next 2D Mario. Actually, it should be a Waluigi platformer. But Yoshi would be cool, too. Or Waluigi... riding Wayoshi.

What does the headline mean? Do some models of this Lego controller include MotionPlus?

Llaffer, you may get better results on Apple TV with the MP3 version of RFN, with the downsides being larger files and lack of chapters and the chapter art.

At this point, I'm mainly looking to play new stages as I replay the game. When I get to a "page" without any blue boxes, it's hard to force myself through an old stage just to keep going.

Also, the castle levels are ridiculously unbalanced with the rest of the game. I can get there without any trouble, then lose three Yoshis in five minutes before finally reaching Bowser Jr. One castle level in particular has egregious design problems like bottomless pits located above other parts of the level. I haven't seen that since Zelda 2.

TalkBack / Re: Epic Mickey Interview with Warren Spector
« on: October 12, 2010, 04:17:47 PM »
Every time Mr Spector discusses Epic Mickey, I get the feeling he might have gotten too close to the game. He always sounds so passionate about what he's done with it, but impressions of the game so far don't appear to have shown off all these nice things.

I feel exactly the same way.

TalkBack / Re: PDP Announces Wii Headset for Call of Duty: Black Ops
« on: October 12, 2010, 04:15:43 PM »
Goldeneye doesn't even support Wii Speak, last I heard. And Monster Hunter 3 won't work with the headset because it was released earlier, and the headset isn't compatible with Wii Speak.

I really applaud PDP for identifying and serving the need for a decent voice-chat solution on Wii. However, there are several problems I can see with this device, without even having used it. (I did get to try a non-functional model at E3.)

- It's not wireless.
- It's not compatible with Wii Speak games.
- Still hampered by Friend Codes.
- It's not packed in with Black Ops (was supposed to be with Conduit 2 before that game's delay).

Potential problems that remain to be clarified:

- Audio quality
- Cross-compatibility with Wii Speak (can you only talk to others who have the Headbanger?)
- Limited adoption by developers

i tried playing 2 on Xbox without a guide and gave up pretty early (never even got to play as Raiden, oh no!)

That's what you think!

Outsourcing the Community Manager position? Well, I guess it's better than Sony's QA testing offer. ;-)

TalkBack / Re: Silicon Knights Developing X-Men: Destiny
« on: October 07, 2010, 07:40:51 PM »
Now this is quite interesting. I think a licensed game is actually a great way for Silicon Knights to rebuild their reputation. It's also a chance for them to be reintroduced to Nintendo platforms, though we still have to see if that will be the case.

I can't remember a new X-Men game since the third movie. Hope it's good and more action-based than Legends/MUA.

Very bad news. Maybe Nintendo owns the Cosmic Walker property and will transfer it to a studio that can finish it. (I'm not optimistic, though.)

Roguelike fans: Do you think it's fair/accurate to say that Yoshi's Story is a roguelike platformer? It does seem to have some structural similarities in how you're supposed to play through it multiple times and do things differently each time.

I started to post that maybe Atari hasn't come to Virtual Console due to all the corporate weirdness and financial problems since the name was bought by Infogrames, but then I remembered that Atari games are all over Microsoft's Xbox 360 Game Room, and that several Atari arcade games are now playable (legitimately) via browser. So I really don't know.

2. The French pronunciation of "Marle" would be as I said it on the show (one syllable). I have no idea if that's what the creators intended, but the name always looked French to me, so that's how I say it.
