TalkBack / IK+ Returns on GBA
« on: March 14, 2003, 03:27:18 AM »
The classic karate game is now portable and in stores.

IK+ Still Packing A Punch The Second Time Around!

WALTHAM ABBEY - 12th March 2003 Ignition Entertainment, a worldwide publisher, developer and distributor of entertainment software has launched a range of games for the Game Boy® Advance. A total of nine games have been released all with a very aggressive retail price point of £14.99 inc. VAT.

IK+  is one of the best known classic Karate games of all time, from the multi-award winning author Archer MacLean, and selling well over 1 million units in the past 15 years. It was the game that spawned a dozen others and was even quoted as being the inspiration for the Street Fighter series.  It was originally launched on 8 and 16-bit platforms and due to huge popular demand is now available on the Game Boy® Advance platform in all its original glory - but with some additional features!

IK+ features one or two players in a frantic 3 player all-action karate game where taking a rest is not an option.  Two players can play on two Game Boy Advances using the available link-cable.  The game features detailed highly animated graphics, from head butts to double face kicks, along with loud spectacular bone-crunching sound effects that any karate fan will enjoy, as well as host of amusing background animations and ambient effects.

The mission is simple - Survive! You fight TWO other players simultaneously in bouts of 3 way fighting, with the least successful player being knocked out at the end of each round. But watch out, the longer you survive the tougher it gets! Every third round sees you fighting on through bonus sub-games featuring the famous bouncing balls level, or with exploding time bombs appearing all around you.

Your belt colour changes as you progress higher up the levels, leading ultimately to Black Belt. But the computer fighters get more cunning, attacking your weak spots with greater speed.  Get knocked down and you must endure a time consuming spell on the ground before being able to get up again.

Throughout all this mayhem, there is humour too!  Leave your player idle long enough and his trousers might fall down round his ankles, or numerous background animations trigger off.

IK+ is now available in leading retail outlets and on line stockists.

TalkBack / New Giftpia Info
« on: March 05, 2003, 02:21:11 PM »
A Japanese newspaper offers some new details on Skip's mysterious "alternative RPG".

The Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun (or Nikkei for short) reported in its Wednesday morning edition that Nintendo's investment in Skip, Ltd. has resulted in a new type of game with Giftpia (although oddly, the game's title is never actually mentioned in the article).

According to Nikkei's English website, Giftpia is now set to support multiple players, which was not the case the last time we heard anything about the game.  The article goes on to confirm that, like Animal Crossing, Giftpia really has no set goal for players to accomplish, nor does it have an epic quest to complete.  It's an open-ended game whose course depends on the player's interactions with other characters.

Nikkei also notes that Skip was the first company created with money from Nintendo's "Fund-Q", and that Nintendo has provided half of Giftpia's 500 million yen (about $4.5 million USD) budget.

Finally, we have to report on a very curious sentence in the Nikkei article:

The game will be marketed for use with Nintendo game consoles from April.

It could simply be an error in translation, but the word "consoles" seems to indicate that Giftpia will either have a GBA version or will feature GameCube-GBA link capability.

Giftpia is scheduled for release in Japan on April 25th.  There is currently no North American release date.

The link at the top of the page goes to Nikkei's English website, but you will have to register in order to read the article.  Registration is free for two weeks and requires a credit card; you need to cancel the membership within that time if you don't want to be charged.

EDISON, NJ, March 3, 2003 - An ensemble of hilarious characters featured on Cartoon Networks's top-rated television programs go interactive, as Majesco, one of the fastest-growing publishers of interactive entertainment, introduces Cartoon Network Speedway for the Nintendo Game Boy® Advance.  Developed by DC Studios, the game is slated for release this July and will be the first in a series of Cartoon Network titles to be released by Majesco on Game Boy Advance.

"Cartoon Network's popular characters translate wonderfully onto an interactive platform and are a perfect fit for the Game Boy Advance audience," said Ken Gold, Vice President of Marketing.  "Younger players will enjoy Cartoon Network Speedway's unique features that set it apart from typical kart racing games."

"Cartoon Network Speedway marks the first time our characters have appeared in a kart racing game, and players will really enjoy the gear-grinding action as they put the pedal to the metal with their favorite characters," said Jamie Porges, vice president of Off Channel Commerce for Cartoon Network.  "In addition, we're pleased to present, with Majesco, the interactive debut of a number of Cartoon Network properties, including Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow and Chicken, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Johnny Bravo, and Sheep in the Big City."

Cartoon Network Speedway features 12 different courses themed to the specific Cartoon Network properties.  "Zippers" for speed boosts, obstacles, jumps, drop offs, and slippery surfaces make each track a challenge to navigate. In addition, players must perform impressive stunts and maneuvers to win the highest popularity rating from the audience.  The more popular your character is, the more hidden surprises you can unlock.

Cartoon Network Speedway also offers the following key features:

  • Play as 12 characters including Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Johnny Bravo, Sheep in the Big City and Cow and Chicken.
  • Unique Star Ratings system rewards skilled drivers with points when they "wow" the audience with stunts, power slides and shortcuts.
  • 15 power-ups add strategy to fast-paced races:  portable hole, disposable shield, wiener missile, magnetizor, pork butts, custard pie mine, invisibility potion, lightning wheels and more.
  • Pick up a sidekick character unique to your Cartoon Network star. For example, when Johnny Bravo finds Little Suzy, he earns a speed increase, invulnerability and double Star Rating awards.
  • Three different game play modes: Quick Race, Championship and Challenge.
  • Unlockable characters, championships, power-ups and tracks extend replay value.
  • 2-player game play with Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable.

Additional information on Cartoon Network Speedway and other Majesco titles can be obtained by visiting their official website at www.majescogames.com.

    TalkBack / Silicon Knights Update
    « on: February 28, 2003, 08:04:13 AM »
We interviewed Denis Dyack at D.I.C.E.  Here are a few snippets.

PGC got the chance to speak with Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack this morning in Las Vegas.  The full interview will be posted later this weekend, but here are a few choice selections:

Silicon Knights is currently working on multiple titles.  Dyack would not say exactly how many there are.

SK will be showing something at E3 in May, but we don't know if it will be playable.

Too Human is still in development.  Dyack describes the game as a "futuristic psychological thrilller", and he says it is very different from Eternal Darkness.

SK wants the upcoming games to have more flash and "pizazz" than Eternal Darkness did.

SK admits that Eternal Darkness left many loose ends in its story and that those loose ends may one day be explored in a new game.  However, such a game is not necessarily in development right now.

Stay tuned for the full interview!

TalkBack / Metal Gear Solid on GameCube - CONFIRMED
    « on: February 27, 2003, 03:15:59 PM »
Konami's website confirms that a Metal Gear Solid game is in development for GameCube.

An administrator at Konami's website's official message boards has confirmed that recent rumors of a Metal Gear Solid title for GameCube are indeed true.

I might as be the first to tell you all. I can tell you that YES, just as Mr. Miyamoto stated, a metal gear game for the GC is in development, but honestly, that is all the info that is available.

This post is by "Administrator", a user with Administrator privileges and the first registered member of the message boards.  It's pretty safe to say that this person works for Konami.

Clearly, there are no details on the game, nor do we have any idea whether this will be a remake or port of either existing Metal Gear Solid game, or an entirely new chapter.

We'll have more info on this announcement soon.  Thanks to Ethan Pearson of Nintendophiles for the tip!

TalkBack / Driver Goes to the Movies
    « on: February 27, 2003, 12:26:58 PM »
The popular series from Infogrames has been optioned for a feature film, with the Resident Evil director signed on.

INFOGRAMES OPTIONS FILM AND TV RIGHTS FOR DRIVER FRANCHISE TO CONSTANTIN FILM AND IMPACT PICTURES

New York, New York, February 26, 2003 - Infogrames, Inc. (Nasdaq: IFGM), a global publisher of interactive games, announced today that it has optioned the film and television rights to its Driver video game franchise to Constantin Film, the leading independent production and distribution company in Germany.  Impact Pictures, a subsidiary of Constantin, is slated to produce the motion picture.

With more than 12 million units sold worldwide, Driver is Infogrames' best-selling game to date.  Developed by Infogrames' own Reflections Interactive, the original Driver debuted in 1999 and was that year's best-selling PlayStation action game.  Released in 2000, Driver 2 ranked as the #2 best-selling PlayStation game of the year, staying in the Top 10 for 18 consecutive weeks.  The hotly anticipated Driver 3 is currently scheduled for release during the 2003 holiday season, and will again follow the action-packed exploits of Tanner, an undercover policeman hired by the mob as a getaway driver.

"We are thrilled to have Driver make the jump to the big screen," said Martin Edmondson, Managing Director and Creative Director of Reflections Interactive.  "The audience for Driver has grown steadily over the last three years because the game combines exhilarating action with a compelling storyline.  That makes for hit games and should make for a terrific movie," he added.

"This is a great opportunity to develop the extremely cool game character of Tanner into a memorable movie figure," said Jeremy Bolt, the movie's producer.  "With Tanner and Tobias Jones, we can create two very believable and iconic action movie heroes."

The feature film is currently scheduled to begin production in 2003, and is being developed for Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil) to direct from a screenplay by James DeMonaco, Todd Harthan and James Roday (The Negotiator).
