General Gaming / Re: Halo Reach
« on: September 11, 2010, 02:15:06 PM »
From the previews I have seen and read, probably not. The game appears to be largely the same (in regards to control, gameplay, graphics, story, etc.) as Halo 3.

Maybe if you're reading previews from people who don't know what they're talking about. Halo Reach is causing a stir in gaming circles for a couple different reasons, mainly the fact that hardcore Halo players are finding that "their game" has been completely turned on its head, and the fact that people who never cared about Halo before are now finding that they're interested in the game.

It's really a completely different ball game from all the previous Halo titles. Like I said earlier in the thread, I don't care for the older games. Halo 1-3 are essentially the same thing with a new coat of paint and some minor balance tweaks. Halo Reach is Bungie really stepping up to the plate to send one out of the park before they move on to new things. The armor abilities change up the way every single encounter in the game plays out, both on the individual level, as well as the level of the entire match. Now literally everybody on the battlefield has some kind of way of approaching, exiting, or handling a fight that is different than Halo's general "run around the corner, start shooting" strategies.

Not to mention how much Bungie is improving the capabilities of the Forge. I don't know if building or customization is your thing, but honestly Forge 2.0 is probably the easiest to use level editor for a first-person shooter, but also powerful enough to be able to create really  complex and interesting levels with it. So much so that Bungie is actually including a couple maps that they created in Forge (including a remake of an older level) on the disc itself, ready to be played in matchmaking right off the bat. Check this out to get a better idea of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnoUGULIPyc

On top of that, there's also the theater functionality, which really makes me wonder why Bungie was the first one to do it. Basically, Bungie saves replays of your last fifty matches (or somewhere around there), and you can go into the theater, and watch the matches play out from the beginning, either following yourself around, following somebody else around, or just using the free camera to wander around the map. From there you can save sections of video to either show people the cool stuff that happened, or maybe just for your own reminder. I would like to say that one thing that Bungie is fantastic at is creating animations, so when you're looking at all the stuff in theater, most of it looks really awesome. That also leads to to some really excellent screenshots, which can also be taken in theater mode. Some are funny, some are intense, some are dramatic, but almost all of them look like promo shots, and honestly it's just really cool to be able to see that come from your own work, both in the game and in the theater.

And theeeeeeeeen there's Firefight. Most common reference for Firefight is Gears of War's Horde mode, but really Firefight is a lot more fun. It was already a lot more fun when just the barebones functionality of it was in ODST, but in Halo Reach they're making it so you can customize pretty much every aspect of Firefight. You want unlimited jetpacks and nothing but rocket launchers? Go for it. Do you want endless swarms of grunts and nothing else (I think this is already in matchmaking, called Gruntocalpyse)?  Do it. You want unlimited ammo and no reloads? Sure!

Really, if you didn't care about Halo before, you have every reason to at least consider it now. Halo Reach is really the ultimate culmination of everything Halo was about, with a ridiculous amount of improvements and new content to both change up the game for older players as well as draw new players in. I'm picking mine up at midnight.

I hope Gearbox doesn't mess this one up like they messed Borderlands up. It took an insane amount of little hacks and customization to get that to respond the way a FPS should.

Explain.

There's no official timeline. There are a couple vague statements made by Aunoma that give the impression there is a set timeline, but all it really means is that they realized how much fans are interested in that stuff, and decided to throw them a bone while they work on new games that they can sandwich into an ACTUAL timeline.

Yes, the D-pad is slightly smaller on the Wii remote,

Unless you have monstrous thumbs, the Wii Remote D-Pad is a lot more than "slightly smaller" than pretty much anything. The only smaller D-Pad pretty much EVER was on the Gamecube remote.

Everybody was all blah blah blah about the Hot Coffee stuff, and then God of War came out with interactive sex scenes in the MAIN GAME and nobody complained.

wtf

Wait, who complained about the story and the linearity? Because that's the opposite of what I've heard about the game.

Hell, just slap some movement controls on the game they already made. It can't be that difficult to do, and even if it's the most half-assed thing ever, it would still be better then ANOTHER DAMN RAIL SHOOTER.

Another reason is that Zelda actually has quite a bad history with voice acting.  I mean just go listen to the CD-I stuff.  That would be enough to turn anybody involved with the creation of future Zelda games away from voice acting forever.

You'd have to be an idiot to think that the CD-I games are an indication of ANYTHING AT ALL involving Zelda, Nintendo, or video games in general.

There are three major "evolutions" of FPS's, GoldenEye 007(N64); Halo; Call of Duty 4.

That's more or less the most disgusting view of the history of videogames I have ever come across.

Biohack: The hacking game from Bioshock, as the name would have you believe.

I really wish that Beat Hazard would just play songs from an external hard drive. It's incredibly inconvenient that it will only play songs ripped to your internal, or from your computer.

Well, its not like Samus goes through the game naked (we all wish that were true though, don't we?).
I sincerely hope no one is truly so shallow.

Do you REALLY have to get so butthurt all the time?

Didn't they just go on a hiring spree after The Conduit came out? This seems pretty fast.

Metroid Prime had surprisingly little in the way of jaggies. The visuals in that game always impressed me.

It's not as obvious that Galaxy isn't AA'd. I didn't know it wasn't until you said so.

You're kidding right? I booted up my Wii with Galaxy and the first thing I thought was "hoshit jaggies"

118
Also, if your 360 or PS3 is vertical, and you bump into it while a game is being played, it has the chance of effing your game up pretty well.

That's true of any disc-based hardware, vertical or not.

Barely any 360 games even have anti-aliasing, and those that do are at MAYBE 4x, and it isn't even done that well. Console games always have jaggies, no matter what game. Yeah, it's worse on the Wii, but AA eats up a lot of power. Even Nintendo didn't use AA for Mario Galaxy.

General Gaming / Re: What about a Call of Duty game on rails?
« on: August 03, 2010, 03:13:22 PM »
Rail shooters... They all suck.

Okay, that's not true. But they could be so much better, and I don't understand why they're not. All the best ones are in the arcade, and even they aren't as good as they could be. Where's all our locational damage reaction and enemy variety? Why don't the games play a little different each time you go through them to prevent memorization being the only skill necessary to beat them? I played the Terminator game at an arcade the other week, and I just don't get it. Every other game has evolved somehow (well, not DDR), but the light gun games haven't changed much since Area 51.

I would say that yes, most people do not care about the story for these games. They want an awesome, fast-paced, competitive experience. The only reason people "care" about the story in Halo is that it delivered just that, which hooked people to the game/series. If Conduit can do that with its multiplayer, its likely that people will care more about the storyline.

Honestly, being a pretty big fan of the PC version of the game (I was quite the basher back in the day. I'm mad rusty now), I had fairly high hopes for the Wii version. I honestly think the lack of pointer control might just totally kill the game. There are so many joints you can select, I can't even imagine cycling through all of them individually.

I am hoping for a 3D Tekken style with Street Fighter Characters being adapted to fit the actual Tekken fighting style.  Adapt the special moves to be less about fireballs and such.

That's what it's going to be. I thought that's what you meant. But you know they're not going to get rid of the fireballs and stuff, that's what makes the Street Fighter characters Street Fighter.

After writing game pieces and stuff, I would have thought that you'd have a pretty solid grasp of marketing and why it exists. The box is to sell to people who don't know anything about the game. If somebody doesn't know anything about the game, chances are, they'll be enticed by the prospect of competitive multiplayer, because as Halo and Call of Duty prove, competitive multiplayer sells shooters.

But, I hope there is more to it than just how you control the game.

What do you mean "more to it"? That in and of itself turns them into completely different games with literally nothing in common except character appearance.
