Nah, they have a right because each game is different and each person's definition of what explicit means is different.  I could say that Space Invaders is explicit violence since it involves shooting.  Shooting is a violent act.  But does that make it not appropriate for a 10 yr old to play?  Its the same as movies.  There is no legal laws regarding movie purchasing or ticket purchasing.  Those rules are all setin by the theaters and the MPAA.

TalkBack / RE: More Details on New E3
« on: July 31, 2006, 10:19:26 PM »
The more Doug talks, the more it sounds like it is going to hurt the industry more.  The good thing about E3 was that all the companies were there in one location, and not spread out.

When was the last time Nintendo held their own major event...2002??

That is not going to make it any easier on us media who get to attend.  It means more work to have to get done each day per person. I already only get 3-4 hours a night at most the last 3 years.

I really like NFS Most Wanted.  But when the game crashes whenever I'm in a really long pursuit (15+ minutes) with multiple milestones acheived it kinda drops the purchase desire down more eachtime.

What I don't get, is why JPN will have like 6 different colored DSL units out by year end and at this point NA still has the 1.  WTF can't we even get one of the other 2 JPN launch colors at least.. -___-

Lesse.  I've met SUPER, Deguello, Jonny, Bloodworth, TYP, umm I think thats it.  Mainly from press events, GDC, and E3.  I don't think I've met any readers from here yet although I know there are one or two who live in the same area of the state as me.

The 7GB, 60fps, 1.5MB/sec uncompressed video barely playsback on my laptop which is setup with: Athlon XP 3500+, 2 gigs RAM, 100gig hd.  It plays, but studders the whole way through.  Yoiu'd need a reaaaaly good computer to play it smoothly.

Interesting how you conveniently left out the parts I mentioned that talk about how detailed tha visuals are in SNK's game which happen to also be the one that wold turn people away.  You talking about those EA and 2K games that haven't sold over a few hundred thousand each year and about 99% here in NA?  With Nintendo's methods it will sell at least that in all regions making it a near million seller (although my bets are million+ in just JPN).  Heres Nintendo's "Magic Schoolbus" lineup for you:  AC, NSMBDS, Brain Training 1 and 2, Mario Kart, Mario and Luigi, Nintendogs, Pokemon, and shall I go on?

Your right that all you do is swing as I said above.  And let me say this, the multiple times I did get to play the game at E3, I didn't even notice the graphics.  Actually Mario Tennis is more complicated than you think for the non-gamer or very casual.  There is the regular swing with just a tap of the A button, power swing when you hold down A, dive swing which involves holding the analogue stick in a certain direction and then hitting A, the direction to where you want to hit is involving pushing the stick in the direction at the same time as you pushing A.  Lets not forget the lob hits which require all the same actions but with a completely different button (B).  Wii Tennis has one action: swing your arm.  Yes there are other little things you can do like putting spin on the ball, but still all you do is swing.  Just one motion.

HAhahaha! No Ian you are wrong on so many levels.  Why are you even talking about HD in a thread about Wii Sports?!?!  The whole point to Wii Sports is just to get other people who don't normally play games to see a very simple interface (controller and visuals on screen) and que  curiosity.  Heres a fun fact:  while playing you are not paying attention to the graphics.  Yes your character will move on its own in Tennis, but because of all the different movements you can put on the ball you have to keep your eye on where its going to swing at the right time and speed.

Its too simplistic maybe for you because you want everything your way.  You want Nintendo to do everything your way or its a waste of money.  But the fact is Nintendo doesn't care about you as an individual.  When in fact it is perfectly suitable for what they are trying to do in bringing in new people.  I could see myself playing Wii Sports with my grandma, and only Wii Sports because of the combination of interface and control.  You talk about playing Baseball Stars 2 from SNK...SNK of all people.  You really think that with all the stats around the screen, those little cut-in clips of the guys yelling to eachother, and the smirk faces in the top corners when the cam is at the plate would be attractive to people who don't play baseball??  Those are the things that turn non sports fans away.  By keeping everything (for lack of better words) to a minimum they are able to keep a more "pleasant-on-the-eye" look for females or even elderly.

You remember the first DS games?  They were very plain and simple, and tended to focus on one feature of the system.  Just like some of these Wii games.  The focus is not graphics for Wii Sports.  Its about the basic interaction the new controller has setup.  Its a gateway to gaming for the potentially millions of other people out there who don't or haven't for many years.

You complain about it looking like a mini-game.  Well just about every single game these days has a mini-game in it.  There is no style that characterises them either.  You are in fact a minigame in the game if the internet.

Funny, reading your post again...I wonder why I even bothered to write all this, you answered your own question: "This is just sports".

And maybe to connect more than 1 controller. I dunno.. it seems obvious to me. Im not gonna claim that, this is what it is, and I could be completely wrong... but considering the Wii's motion capability, it doesnt seem like anything else. well, besides maybe a DS connectivity.

Nah there is no setup needed for the Wiimotes.  Its all done via infrared on the sensor bar.  It doesn't matter where you stand, everything off of relative movement to the bar.  I'm leaning more towards a SD card or DS reference with it myself.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: How will the Wii reach out to the non-gamers?
« on: June 19, 2006, 10:15:08 PM »
I have 2 coworkers who rarely play games.  I had told them about it and they kinda scoffed it at first.  But now they have watched the E3 trailers from the press conferences over and over because they now want a Wii.  But its all about seeing it in action, and playing it.  It should spread really quickly like the DS did after a short while.  Yes it will be slow to take off because the first batches will be bought up by all the big fans like us.  Then as more supply rolls in, more people get to play it, and word spreads it will pick up speed.

Incidentily, they both are really interested in Wii Sports.  One of the most basic games.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on the game.  It was one of my favorites just from the few minutes I got to play at E3.

If what Perrin (I think) says is true, there are going to be promo/demo tours the next few months for the public to get a chance to play Wii for themselves.  That is the only way Nintendo will win people over.  Get it out there early and let people get their hands on it.  I know I will be logging many hours at the in-store demo kiosks when they arrive with tennis .

It was good to see you guys (PGC) again.  I should have checked/asked around more for others besides SS4, Deg, Jonny, Bloodworth, and TYP .  Ah well...maybe next year.

I guess I agree with these awards.  I didn't get to play much myself this year, again.  I agree 100% with Jonny on Madden Wii.  Although it does have a bit of a learning curve because of the new control setup, it is very intuitive and much more simple to understand.

Price drops on the other stuff seems possible now too.

TalkBack / RE: EDITORIALS: Wii Will Get Over It, Won’t Wii?
« on: May 03, 2006, 10:15:51 PM »
Guess I'll chime in a bit here.  When I first got to work the next day after the announcement one of the first things my coworker (who is an avid pc gamer in a quake clan i believe) sad to me was "did you see what nintendo did to the name of their next system?"  he thought it was lame and a really bad choice.

Then later that night I showed another coworker who hasn't played games in years (goes to school for art like drawing, design, etc.) the trailer that was released and he thought it was cool.  He could see some interesting things that could be done from a marketing standpoint.

Opinions are going to vary A LOT from all camps.  I don't personally like the name either...Nintendo has a lot to prove to lots of people.  But from a marketing stance there are lots of opportunities.
